[Music] got some breaking news this morning here on the Cowboys report Dalvin cook is signing with the Dallas Cowboys it is not however to the active roster the Cowboys are adding cook to there what's going to be a 17 man practice squad since I don't foresee Denzel Dax getting claimed by anybody as International player pathway program so cook joining the practice squad we'll go into the details on this here momentarily but this is exactly why you guys subscribe you know we're going to be about 30 minutes away from waiver claims we might have to do another video we'll do another one today later on it going to be a busy day news happens we have you covered hit that sub button so you don't miss out on anything now this had been mentioned by Clarence Hill the night before uh or I should say last night because that was the night before was yesterday uh a Cowboy Source said running back dvin cook was in good shape but they are only interested in signing the practice squad at this point cook may have another visit with the Colts he has some decisions to make uh I think dvin cook going in a very short period of time and maybe he thinks this is a better path to playing time in Dallas is probably a factor here I don't think there was a lot of interest in Dalvin cook you know there's a reason why he didn't have any workouts until until August and definitely looked like he was in shape from that video I I am not going to read into people were like oh he he limped off like an old man after afterward I'm I'm actually not read anything that I I don't think there's too much to to glean from that just the physical shape looked pretty good practice squad makes sense to me look dvin cook had already been on the decline you can you can wind back the tape to last off season we're like I've got some interest but hey he might be dvin cooked and then he was pretty bad with the Jets which we'll get into here in a little bit it's also just the practice squad you know it's kind of like a seventh round pick I'm I'm not going to be tilted and freaking out over a practice squad Edition the Cowboys have done this before done it with Lyle Collins they've done it with Brandon Carr they've done it many times with this type of Veteran who they think ah maybe he can contribute maybe he can maybe he can't this is the proper way of going about finding out however so what is your video or broke down the initial news on the video yesterday about the visit this was the exact compromise I'd offered okay practice squad I I didn't want him on the active roster because the rolls redundant to an extent do you need another another 29-year-old running back coming off a down year coming off several declining years in a row who doesn't help you on special teams you have one of those already in Ezekiel Elliott I don't really see how you fit two of those guys onto your active roster when I still think Rico D's the best back on your roster the team might not agree with me we'll see who ends up being right I suppose cook does not offer the same juice that he once did there were still flashes last year but this is the exact compromise I had offered in the end they are doing the Brandon car move the the the second time around remember when they brought him back to the practice squad they gave him three games and you know didn't go the way they wanted to and car wasn't happy and then he was out of the NFL um hopefully that does not happen with dvin cook to be clear I will be cheering for him I care about what's best for the team and once you sign a player what's best for them is being really good at their jobs and having success obviously hopefully it's you know maybe better than the Rashad Evans L Collins moves they've made here my concerns do remain at least the Cowboys coaching staff now will get a close look at him on the practice squad and see what he's able to contribute I I will never be mad at a practice squad signing I I I can't be that goes against the things I've said before it's it's a practice squad spot you know Delvin cook or Royce Freeman I I I think that's what the decision is here by the way who cares like that's fine go with whatever one can help your roster cuz special teams is is whatever for the practice squad spot there's no guarantees here no guarantees dvin cook ends up returning to form there's no guarantees he doesn't end up returning to form no guarantee of a roster spot nothing just let's bring in see what you can do again doesn't sound like there was much interest elsewhere in Dalvin cook but maybe the Cowboys can reform that 2019 super team and see how it goes he probably will need some time since he hasn't been on a team all offseason so I think there will need to be some ramp up involved for gametime.co promo code chat sports the the reason why Dalvin cook is available in late August as a practice squad signing despite at one point being one of the best backs in football is that he hasn't been as productive over the over the last four seasons the decline has been there I think probably still get you what's blocked but I and I think that's that's partially why the numbers fell off so much in New York because the Jets offensive line was not very good but I don't know if he brings you the same Dynamic playmaking the wow that is hyper efficient that is so good stuff that he used to offer you some Advanced stats uh from our friends over at sumers sports expected points added push now that that is a running back and offensive SL offensive line step but he was dead last in football among qualifying backs success rate he was bottom three explosive play rates this to an extent comes down to ice cream flavors with what your running back committee looks like right now with Zeke and Rico da and Duce vwn I'm looking for more explosive plays and that's I believe some are just finds it as 10 plus yard runs uh some sites do it as 15 I think 10's a pretty good number there uh dead last that that is a rate metric so not just limited to like the total number it's it's rate it's the average yards created again that's based on what's blocked better still bottom 10 yards after contact on average bottom five first down percentage second last it's not very good uh the stuff we had mentioned in previous years now I believe the nextg stats has tweaked their numbers by the way cuz I I went and looked at that the new pro NFL nextg stats different than what they had used previously but it's fairly minimal differences uh and still pretty similar to where he was 2018 he was he was plus .1 yard overe expected on average 23rd out of 47 qualifying backs that jumped to 14th in football these are backs only I I took out the quarterbacks plus point4 it's really good number right there 2020 he was awesome he's a clearcut like and this the more carries you get typically that the number tends to drop down because it's a it's a hyper efficiency metric but he was eighth which is honest super high workload is awesome plus6 over what's like blocked and down in distance and you know all all that stuff then it dip back down in 20121 but he was still what he was in 2019 so there was still still really good stuff then it really fell off in 2022 and this was like red flags going off older running back or you know that's not typically you don't get better as you age at running back with very few Hall of Fame exceptions you know Frank G Adrien Peterson Etc but he he was he was negative there he did not qualify among the 40 something backs who had enough stats there but they've expanded the numbers you can see all the players now negative 1.2 rushing yards overe expected I have not seen a lower number than that um bad it's bad so how many games do you think Dalvin cook ends up playing for the Cowboys I up to seven let's Rex G only so up to 17 low as zero get those predictions informing the comments of today's show now maybe this sounds salty whatever I'll say because I think it's true this is not a marquee Edition um I I kind of don't like the uh NFL news breaker game of taking what the agent said and spinning it into some it's a practice squad signing in August it is a marquee name that doesn't mean it is a marquee addition in fact I would argue this might be Dalvin Cook's last chance if given the lack of interest that was in him previously the way the last year year plus has gone the decline all that stuff dvin cook doesn't look a lot better this might kind of go the way of ran Evans who I think is maybe he signs the practice squ that I think that'd be good for him but hasn't been much interest in him hasn't been interested in Leonard forette either this the running back is a young man's game and dvin cook 29 and is younger than I am that's 40 in in normal human years like you're kind of running out of of of leeway there so the running back room active roster only is Ezekiel Elliot Rico dowle du vaugh and Hunter lipkey I do think by the way the Cowboys will try to get Malik Davis to the practice squad I think this might spell the end of Royce Freeman can I point out how hilarious it is the Cowboys were talking about Royce Freeman being like wow how was he available this guy could be our number two back to he might not even be on their team at all that's kind like that that that might happen and that was like A month's
