News live at 5 and we start with some breaking news there's a bomb scare right now covering 2 miles neighbors actually got a reverse 911 call telling them to be very cautious if they are checking their mailboxes thanks for joining us I'm Scott Wickersham and I'm Erica Bryant Police say that someone planted fireworks inside three mailboxes and one even exploded all of this unfolded in Rowan County along Highway 152 Channel 9's Evan Donovan is live for us outside the Sheriff's Office office and Evan you were able to talk with the man who first called the police I was Erica investigators here at the sheriff's officers still trying to figure out who left those fireworks in two mailboxes and at least one trash can but as you said I talked to the man who first called 911 he says he was working from home saw smoke billing out of the mailbox next to his went to check it out saw a lit firework going off in that mailbox and an unlit firework in his might sound like nothing now but the incident definitely worried some neighbors from Chopper 9 Sky Zoom this afternoon we saw a bomb squad robot from the Rowan County Sheriff's Office examining two mailboxes on Highway 152 a homeowner called 911 to report something blew up in one of them so I heard what sound like a shotgun blast probably a little deeper Gary Helms lives down the street from those mailboxes he thought it might be a crash he later learned it was an explosive device how are you going to check your mailbox from here on well I can't can't really say I might give away a might give away a secret to somebody wanting to do something so but there's a way I can check it and a spokesperson for the Rowan County Sheriff's office confirmed the device was a firework similar to a mortar shell you light and put in a tube to launch and they were placed in at least one other location about the same time as that call came in there was another call came in of a loud boom that had been heard in the area just about a mile from here on Brown Road uh chiner grow Police Department went to that area and searched and did find a trash can uh that appeared to have had something that had been detonated in it as well thankfully no one reported getting hurt but the Sheriff's Office sent out a reverse 911 call within a 2-m radius and posted on Facebook to warn people who live nearby what we would tell the public in this situation is to just use caution because we don't know if there's any more of those that's been put in mailboxes or anything like that yeah spokesperson here at the sheriff's office tells me if they find the person who did this that person could face State charges but they could also be charged federally because mailboxes are protected by federal law in Rowan County Evan Donovan Channel 9 out Witness News
