Intro knowing I do what I do you can imagine the kind of bizarre stuff i' run into in films and shows some are a challenge while some like Lanos poor things are an absolute joy to dive into despite their absurdest motives concealing an undercurrent of simultaneously hopeful and morbid themes but there's another rarer category of eccentric films that keep the audience at arms length revealing its inner workings ever so slightly before washing any contemplation over with something distractingly weird that's the category of obsurd a cinema I'd say kinds of kindness Falls in Lanos styptic Anthology which he cot with eamus philippo is of a mood that has a distinct connection with the one character that is recurring in all three stories but a due reminder before I jump in kinds of kindness is more about the experience almost like a performance art piece that interacts with the audience on an individual level so while it' be totally fine for something I say to influence or alter your perspective on it do hold on to those thoughts that might not line up with what you'd find on the internet because that's what you've experienced and that's just as valid when it's a film like kinds of kindness before we go ahead a spoiler warning is in order as we will be discussing essential plot points and character details from the film so if you've watched it already let's dive straight into the video and while you're at it please like the video and subscribe to our Channel as it helps us a lot the death of RMF why does Robert go The Death Of R.M.F: Why Does Robert Go Back To Raymond? back to Raymond as far as living every second of your life under someone's command goes Robert's got things under control he's got a job a gorgeous house and a car out of his peculiar relationship with his boss Raymond Raymond dictates every inch of Robert's existence and out of his love for his boss or partner and a weird need to avoid taking control of his own life Robert eats drinks dresses thingss and has sex with his wife Sarah according to Raymond's wishes living his life for Raymond's entertainment wasn't a problem for Robert until he was asked to Ram his car into a midnight blue BMW which was to be driven by RMF oh it's no biggy rmf's fine with dying no Raymond's not lying about that in the opening scene we see Raymond's young girlfriend Vivien approve RMF for the strange job Robert's not willing to kill someone to prove his love for Raymond and like a man who knows that there's no win in forcing someone to do something for you out of their love for you Raymond dumps Robert and for Raymond breaking up includes but isn't limited to breaking into the house he bought Robert and taking mro's Shadow tennis racket the gift from Raymond that Sarah absolutely loved back with him Raymond means business Raymond expected absolute relinquishment of personal freedom from Robert we don't know how they met or what circumstances rendered Robert vulnerable to forming this sort of wonky power Dynamic with his boss but I guess it's sort of ironic to ponder over Robert's susceptibility to this sort of thing thing when someone like Raymond is standing opposite him someone whose need to control Robert goes beyond the desire to tell him how long his hair should be and how much he should weigh the true extent of Raymond's control is only known to us when Robert confesses it to Sarah the fact that they even met and got married was by Raymond's design he even played wingman and gave Robert the pickup line he'd used to reel Sarah in at the bar Robert frequence on Raymond's order even now but what violated Sarah the most was Raymond's decision not to let Rob Bert have kids Roberts always wanted kids only to please the man he loves he's defied his marital vows and morals and mixed crushed abortion pills into her coffee each time she's gotten pregnant he's even taken the liberty of telling people that something biological on Sarah's part is the reason he doesn't have a kid he's basically treated Sarah like trash so it's not surprising that she's packed up and left while it initially seems like Robert's truly shattered after losing his wife and that's why he goes over to Raymond house and accuses Vivien that they're sleeping with Sarah that's not quite the case the person robots truly possessive over is Raymond not Sarah he's been living this life of being told what to do for so long that he's forgotten how to even pick a drink for himself how badly he misses Raymond is even haunting him in his dreams being shoot Away by Raymond even though he started eating to gain weight for him is a frustrating udal for Robert but not more so than watching Raymond with another girl Rita when Robert and Rita hit it off after their meet scary at the bar it doesn't take him long to figure out that Rita's replaced him and when Rita ends up in the hospital by doing the job that Robert was once assigned and he rejected Robert sees RMF at the hospital and he figures out his way to win Raymond's affection back Robert's forgotten how to live on his own overwhelmed with his freedom he craves the safe cradle of his prison Raymond's been holding a Godlike place in his life a life that is constructed entirely by and around Raymond so by pretending to be a nurse to push an unconscious RMF to the parking lot and killing him by repeatedly running over him with his car Robert proves two things to Raymond his love for Raymond is all engrossing so much so that it eclipses his sense of empathy and morals and the Robert who's now surrendering himself to Raymond is doing so after having had a taste of Freedom Robert now knows that his world is feeble without its architect that's what Raymond wanted from him in the first place Total devotion and judging by the fact that Vivian so young and how she always has a specific type of outfit on I'd say that he's doing the same thing with her too RMF is flying what's R.M.F. Is Flying: What’s The Meaning Of The Story? the meaning of the story Daniel's story is where kinds of kindness is the most itself unapologetically everything about this cop is kind of off there's been no news of his wife Liz ever since their Maritime research boat went missing and as a cop I bet Daniel's even more frustrated by his helplessness but more than anything else about him Daniel's oddness stands out the more most he finds his beautiful wife's likeness on a suspect's face even when his colleague and friend Neil and his wife MAA show sincere kindness and concern by spending time with him what he does is emotionally manipulate them into watching a video that makes them uncomfortable the four of them are swingers who've made quite a few sex tapes together and now with Liz missing Neil and his wife MAA find it all the more Awkward that that's how Daniel wants to cope with missing his wife you think Daniel would be thrilled to have Liz back when she and her lesser father forunate coworker with an infected leg are rescued by RMF who's a pilot in this story a lot of things don't exactly add up there's the case of Liz having her dog tag a copy of the one that Daniel has doesn't seem like she'd have two of them right and then her shoes don't fit she forgets Daniel's favorite song and most importantly she devours a chocolate cake everyone close to Liz knows that she's got that cilantro taste like soap sort of aversion to a chocolate So Daniel stuck on the idea that whoever came back isn't really his wife but someone who is a near identical copy of her Daniel's paranoia is exacerbated with each passing second and it gets to the point where he shoots a civilian in the hand and licks his wound whether this woman who came back is Liz or not rarely comes down to the strange dream she tells her dad she had in that dream the island where she was stranded was run by dogs and people were the Strays but the dogs were kind to them and because they couldn't have chocolate all the chocolate was left for the humans that would explain why someone who hated chocolate has now grown a taste for it but the way Liz uses this as a metaphor to explain why she loves and appreciates Daniel does put things into perspective to her Daniels like chocolate on that island reliable and always available she was starving on that island and it got bad enough for her to sustain herself with food that she wouldn't touch in her regular life she might have felt the same way about Daniel before but now that she's back she's grown to love him why maybe that's something she learned from the dogs unconditional love and devotion I don't think Liz is a doppelganger or a dog turned human I think the changes in her are telling of the doglike qualities that rubbed off on her on that island who we are and how we think are crucial factors in how we're influenced by something two people won't take away the same thing from the same experience so Liz internalized the devotion and unconditional love people generally associate with dogs so much so that when Daniel hits her with cruel demands like chopping off her thumb and cooking it for him she es Daniel's animalistic qualities on the other hand have a bit of human cruelty mixed into them the fact that the department psych massively downplays his mental break makes sense really how often are cops held accountable for their wrongs Daniel's an abuser a very troubled man who's weaving justifications around his mistreatment of people I'm inclined to believe that in this world dogs and people are more connected than the usual bond between two species of animals inhabiting the Earth there are people with some doglike qu qualities that make them more susceptible to abuse like Liz with her loyalty and Devotion to a husband who uses her love to hurt her beats her up and then tells people that she did it to herself and then there's Daniel with his animalistic love for a bloody piece of steak and the instinct to lick the wound that he's inflicted much like an abuser may feel the need to tend to their victim after hurting them it's all pretty distorted in Daniel's mind and as an abusive man he tends to justify the pain he puts Liz through by convincing himself that she is the one in the wrong in the end he takes it too far and demands her liver to Feast on and with her doglike obedience and love Liz kills herself in the process of fulfilling Daniel's needs the fact that the real Liz walks through the door and Embraces Daniel right after is his Disturbed mind's desperate attempt to make sense of his horrifying actions and considering the dark Apollo likee qualities of this story closing this chapter with dogs acting like people seems to be rather fitting I think what it means to say is that any species running the show would acquire a kind of detached almost brutal nonchalance to the pain of the other RMF eats a R.M.F. Eats A Sandwich: Does Ruth Die? sandwich does Ruth die Anna's bursting to prove that she's the Messiah that Emily and Andrew are looking for but when it comes to performing the miracle and resurrecting the dead Anna fails Emily and Andrew are devoted members of a sex cult run by Omi and AKA Andrew's fallen for OMI quite hopelessly and that sort of makes him want to dismiss Emily's growing importance to Omi Omi and AKA have infected the minds of their followers with this bizarre notion of Purity and contamination they're only to consume the water that Omi and AKA purify with their tears Emily's left her husband and child to commit to herself to this Grand purpose of finding the mirical worker the Cults looking for and despite the very exploitative dynamic between the cult leaders and the followers where the latter are forsaken if they contaminate themselves by having sex with people outside of Omi and AKA they don't seem to be lying about this prophesized individual that doesn't mean they don't intend to capitalize on this Messiah they've got a luxury boat meant to house the Messiah and display an ice carving of her bust for select members they've got the business part all thought out now all they need is for Emily and Andrew to find the person whose Supernatural gift they want to exploit Emily is not totally given up on her family especially her daughter she often Breaks the Rules and drops by to leave gifts and bless her daughter's room with the cult water such is the extent of her faith in Omi and AKA but while her husband initially comes off as a good guy who wants his wife and the mother of his child back that isn't necessarily the truth Joseph lies to her about their daughter hurting her foot just to get her to come by and finding Emily alone and vulnerable he rues her drinks and rapes her Emily is far too easy to manipulate all she's done after leaving her husband someone who's very clearly predatory and abusive is fall into the Trap of yet another manipulator it doesn't take much effort for Joseph to to convince her that whatever happened the other night was consensual but that only happens because blaming her husband for raping her is the last thing on her mind she's now contaminated and after she fails the freaky sauna test where people are agonized into sweating as much as impurity out as possible she's given the boot the C's strongest hold on people is the fear of contamination they've instilled in their followers and seeing as people prioritize the cleanliness of their drinking water the most water is what theyve weaponized Emily even freaks her daughter out by warning her that Daddy's you know what and sweat are contaminated so that she stays away from him Emily seems to have a spiritual link to the Messiah thereafter there's this dream she had where her hair was caught in the filter and she was stuck underwater before one of a pair of twin synchronized swimmers saved her the swimmer cut off her hair which might be why Emily cut her hair short before she was ousted from the cult she met this girl at the bar Rebecca who claimed to have a twin sister who was the girl that Emily was after Andrew shut it down because Rebecca and her twin sister Ruth circumstances didn't fit one of the important criteria in their test Rebecca is alive whereas the messiah's twin is supposed to be dead but that's clarified by Rebecca when Emily follows up on her independently Rebecca is in fact supposed to be dead once a wasted Rebecca dived into a pool that had been drained injuring herself near fatally and Ruth performed the miracle and saved her life a consequential factor in whatever happens from this point on is the shift in in Emily's drive before her purpose was grander it was about finding the person who could bring the dead back to life now it's about the desperation to do anything Omi and AKA would want so they take her back now that this is what's compelling her to hand Ruth over to the cult Emily doesn't even mind that Rebecca kills herself to tick that box that would make Ruth acceptable to the cult it's not that Emily hasn't always shown signs of being a little unhinged her driving for instance is bound to make you wonder why she's still in one piece but now she's truly gone over the edge she injures a poor dog so she can test out Root's healing powers she's completely lost sight of what's actually important her empathy has taken such a swift fall that she drugs Ruth undresses her weighs her limp body on a wet scale gets her to resurrect RMF at the MOG ironically enough it's her terribly rash driving that gets her dream in tatters she gets in an accident and while she doesn't seem to have sustained any major injury roots on the brink of death if it was a regular world and Ruth was a regular person I could have said with certainty that Ruth's dead but she's a miracle healer and most of all there's a sign of life even when we last see her her eyes swell up perhaps to mourn the exploitation of goodness in the world perhaps because she's so much in pain or perhaps a mix of both but we don't know the extent of Ruth's gift who knows maybe she can heal herself too but the only thing that makes me question that hopeful possibility is what Emily wanted the prospective Messiahs to utter when when they would try to resurrect the dead take life from me that would suggest that the Messiah is supposed to be a pool of life she can only have some Life Force to spare when she isn't completely depleted of it and I doubt that the accident left her with much to resurrect herself what's the What’s The Significance Of R.M.F.? significance of RMF before I continue further let me reassure you that the director has confirmed one thing about his Beyond peculiar film there's no meaning to rmf's initials they're just random letters to grasp the ining character significance as a link between the three stories we first need to explore how the stories are thematically connected the title of the film itself is both a sarcastic suggestion and an acknowledgement of what runs through the heart of the three stories a drive for control a need to be controlled and the corrosion of the soul in the name of giving and receiving kindness each of the stories has this volatile dynamic between someone authoritative and someone malleable and in all of the stories the ones being exploited in the Name of Love end up Crossing in all limits and or dying to please their authoritative loved ones in Robert's case Raymond wielded the power Liz gave her liver to satiate her husband's appetite and died and Emily lost control of her life and her car in her desperation for the cult leaders love and approval Robert Liz and Emily have lost their autonomy and their sanity to receive something vile from their respective abusers something must as kindness but actually quite the opposite a very distorted version of fle back's wish came true for Robert he didn't need to think for himself he had someone who decided everything for him but in exchange for the structure the order and the money that Raymond provided he wanted absolute control over Robert and he happily gave in Liz forgot the difference between unconditional love and self-destruction Daniel knew how far she'd go to be of service to him and he took and took until she was bleeding out in a chair Emily well she's gotten a cycle of falling for people who want to take advantage of her Joseph Omi and AKA gave her something that looked and felt like love while they snatched any semblance of Freedom she had body and mind kinds of kindness is undeniably nihilistic about how it observes the subversion of goodness good things seldom make it in the worlds the three stories are set in Robert didn't start out a murderer instead the reason he risked turning Raymond down was that he couldn't get himself to kill someone but by the end of the story he went out of his ways to find and kill arus just so Raymond would reconsider the breakup Liz was almost too pure and good for the world and around a husband who prayed on her goodness and innocence Liz stood no chance there's another thing kinds of kindness makes abundantly clear dogs are the embodiment of goodness you've got lizz's character's likeness to dogs a wory devotion that's way too self-destructive a quality to possess and then there's the dog that Emily hurts to get to Ruth that pup was simply existing when this crazy woman attacked her she healed for sure but the fact that she didn't bite Emily even when she was in pain makes her almost similar to Liz the dogs on the island never bit people so she thought that not fighting back was a virtue that sort of thing doesn't make it in a world that runs on establishing Authority and grabbing power kinds of kindness is cynical in The Last Story Ruth knew she had the gift yet she chose to keep it to herself and help heal animals she was pure and she certainly didn't seek out trouble yet trouble sought her out in the form of Emily goodness doesn't survive nothing survives really the only character who is on the outside yet on the inside of these stories and words is RMF he's almost this Godlike figure who's seemingly playing dangerous games with his life because he knows what will happen in the end he volunteered to be killed in the first story rescued Liz in the second and was resurrected by Ruth in the final story RMF is the only character who's constant in all the stories while the actors switch characters in all of them them so call it parallel realities the Multiverse Theory or a three-part story of doble gangers RMF is never completely involved in whatever is happening with the characters lives you can also see him as the Observer who puts himself in these situations to see what choices people make when the only options are good and bad he is the Catalyst marking a big shift in each of their lives and It All Leads to one thing everyone loses even the ones who think they've won in the mid-credit scene RMF is the only one doing s of okay he eats a sandwich and even when he's doing something seemingly low risk he spills ketchup all over himself that signifies the unavoidable nature of trouble whether you're outside inside or simply minding your own business trouble has a keen nose for you Outro thank you for
