you think of him being a tough healthy guy and have something like that happen and just not know what the future holds is is a little bit concerning as is expected in a case like this we found one of the vessels that feed blood to his heart muscle to be closed and I was fortunate enough to be able to open it um and put a small metallic device called a Stant in the vessel which helps to hold the vessel open and reestablish blood flow of the heart muscle I sometimes think ahead what what might be in store for me on the weekend a press conference at Michigan State University on Sunday was not on my radar screen thank goodness everything worked out well and that we can be talking about this now we can be kind of enjoying the moment it's a fake great ending but a great football game players believed in what we were doing they believe that we could win in any football game that we played one of the reasons little giants has become so important was because it gave us some momentum after that game we found out we could make plays when it mattered and and obviously it led us to a great season the first Big 10 championship in 20 years in Michigan State and that's why the play is important because of what we went on to do trick plays are a big part of Mark dantonio's Legacy when looking back through his entire career and for a coach who was so toughed and Stern and and buy the book on these things him being the trick play guy was something nobody really expected just from his personality you're not afraid to put your faith in your players and your coaches we didn't do it every game but we did it enough to make people um work on [Music] it so after they win that game in such a fashion I didn't cut my wristband off after that game I just kind of wanted to remember the feeling of that Notre Dame win and so I kept it on eventually I was just like let's see how long this can go I wore it when I was swimming when I was playing sports I wore it at my wedding I had to tape it up onto my Forum so it didn't flop out of my tuxedo and in the end it went for 1,029 days and it felt like my hand had been free for the first time in almost 3 years it was a weird feeling that I hadn't experienced in quite a long time I'd say probably at least once a month somebody stumbles upon it or or realizes that you know I was the one involved in that play it's good to have that kind of a memory come out of college [Applause] football what was going through your mind when you saw the ball in the air behind oh just catch it catch it do not drop this ball Little Giant coach D likes little giants I think that's the only movie he's ever watched so every all of our all of our trick plays are named after that movie Little Giants play have you ever seen another movie your players said you only watch that M no I've seen other [Music] movies the dawn of a new era in East Lancing Jonathan Smith set to coach his first game at the Helm of the Spartans starting a season with plenty of unknowns 61 new players on the roster we'll take a deep dive into the Spartans on the Big 10 live pregame now Spartan Stadium on a Friday night Michigan State 14 straight wins in non-conference openers that is the longest streak in the Big 10 they look to keep it going this evening against Florida Atlantic we have to wait a little longer for the debut of CH though kickoffs been moved to 710 Eastern due to weather so 9 minutes later than was originally scheduled and with that we welcome you into the Big 10 live pregame it is great to have you with us Dave rson on the 17th anniversary of the launching of the Big 10 Network pleased to introduce two of my new colleagues I was going to introduce Ashley as my newest colleague and then yeah you're old hat we took the the preseason tour together Marcel wandered in about an hour ago and and so here he is welcome Marcel ree four time toll bowler former Washington Husky we are delighted to have you or delighted to have both of you it is awesome to be here uh Happy Anniversary 17 years that is that is a big deal Marcel I never got to cover you in my time at the Pack 12 you were a little bit before my time there but I watched the play from scrimmage 98 yards Jake Locker to you against Arizona in ' 07 still the longest play from scrimmage you still have that record I do still have that record have that record uh but this these are the highlights that you care a little bit more about yeah these are the phone ones you're talking about Washington versus Washington state in the Apple CB game in Seattle one of the greatest colge scenes known to man and uh you're scoring touchdowns that's fun that is fun so you won that game you didn't win the Arizona game I was I wasn't going to bring that in but here we are I got to tell you my favorite fun fact when I was doing a deep dive on the research on the internet Marcel he was a prolific track runner which probably wouldn't surprise you but most football players run the one and the he was a 400 Runner yeah that I just my respect for you went went even further 400 Runner and fullback I mean is an interesting combination it worked out I think it worked out okay it did work out it did work out four four Pro bowls would seem to point out that it did work out I like we might start calling you standard definition though I mean it's been a while right little grainy yeah little grainy those highlights they're aging me right now a little bit but it's great to have another fullback because you know Howard likes to think that he's the the greatest fullback here at the network but now you give him a little run for his money fullbacks stick together we got to show fullback some love here now all right yes the uh the the fullback lobby as we know is is one that has long stuck together uh Jonathan Smith getting things going at Michigan State coming from his alma mater of Oregon State program was into shambles there and he ended up getting them to a ranking for the first time in 11 years last season here's what he's got going at Michigan State 24 players added in the portal the third most in the Big 10 got the 12th ranked portal class nationally you see the numbers here behind only Oregon Ohio State and Washington so a lot of new faces in East Lancing Brock Fen will call this game along with Jason Ross Jr and Danny Rogers he joins us now from East Lancing and Brock we saw all the new faces there this is not unusual this is college football in 24 as we know maybe a little bit intensified at Michigan State this year with the coaching change but what did Jonathan Smith tell you about fitting all of those puzzle pieces together well the key is he brought over a key Trio all right now let's start with Center Tanner Miller the second team All-American First Team all Pack 12 offensive guard he played sparingly at center now he will be at Center going forward we talk about tight end Jack Ving who led all tight ends across the entire f BS in receiving touchdowns and of course you have quarterback Aiden Charles who while not starting any games saw significant playing time in nine of them so yes he is rebuilding this thing yes the transfer portal is as chaotic as it's ever been but if you can bring a key Trio over you are in good shape and they certainly need it they have just four returning all conference players it's tied for the second fewest of any team in the Big 10 is there a position here Brock that they feel best about heading into this year the linebacker room defensive coordinator Joe Rossy was going on and on and on about how deep and how versatile this linebacker room is and it's just like you said the defense was an issue the offense can go out there today and score a million points if the defense plays at the level that they played a year ago it's not going to be enough but that linebacker room is going to be that rock expect to see five or six guys different body types different roles they're going to be all over the place he is over the moon with these linebackers yeah one of those guys Cal holiday Brock was telling us at when we were there for training camp that they focus so much on team building you guys talk about all the new faces but from a continuity standpoint when you think about who Jonathan Smith brought with him not just the trio of players but his staff he's got 15 staff members that came from Coralis including six coaches so I I'm just curious from your perspective how does that factor into the continuity and how might that show up here in the early going coach Smith said load up the bus if you live in cor vales there's a spot for you in East laning it is a huge thing we were practice yesterday and for a team that like we said is rebuilding from scratch they were in sync they were in motion coaches know exactly what they expect out of there guys and even with the additions like like defensive coordinator Joe Rossi he's established he led nationally ranked defenses over at Minnesota so he brought over some key guys he added some key guys and coaches and it took Oregon State four years under Jonathan Smith to finally get a winning record and get to a bow game you can cut that in half regardless of what happens tonight regard of what happens this season this turnaround is happening quickly yeah I'm with you on that Brock he told us this situation that he's stepping into is a lot better than the one he stepped into at his Alma moer looking forward to watching the game and looking forward to hearing your call thanks so much thank you guys so I think when you look at this game and Marcel I'm curious for you because in the world of transfer quarterbacks and in the world where these guys have all have so much experience Aiden Childs it was the first thing that Jonathan Smith said to us when we were there at training camp he said he's 18 years old he's going to turn 19 in September he's never started a game this is going to be a big stage and you never know exactly when the lights go on how they're going to show up so what are you looking forward to what do you want to see from Aiden Charles tonight I want to see how he adjusts on the Fly the biggest thing just like with anything you don't know what you don't know so he has never started a game he's coming in into one of the best leagues in college football in America and he's going to have to lead this team one of the biggest things that I realized coming out of training camp is this 18-year-old kid was voted Ved a captain by his team now coming from someone who was voted a captain many years it's one of the greatest accomplishement and the greatest things that you can have on your resume so he's starting off on the right foot and it says a lot about his character I think that is amazing and I think it's amazing just that he 18 years old period because it means he was 17 years old last year when he was playing for Oregon State and it was interesting in hearing Jonathan Smith tell us about his recruitment I know you know a little bit about this from spending time with him in Corvalis last year here but he was someone that they got on early when they were at Oregon State they identified his talent they got him committed and then everyone else started trying to get in on Aiden Charles and he was so committed to Oregon State and so committed that when this coaching staff said hey we're going to go to East Lancing he said I want to come with you he really believes in Jonathan Smith and it it has to seem to me and I'm interested in your take on this Marcel that this is a position where you're very much in the spotlight this is one where there's going to be pressure and I think it's foolish to think he's not going to have some really rough days there are going to be some rough days out there how important is that continuity for him and the familiarity with his coaching staff to your point Dave it's extremely important that he has that continuity because he's going to be able to lean on his head coach when he doesn't know something or when he's feeling a little bit down and that head coach is going to be able to pick him up just like with any good head coach does it says a lot about this kid that that he followed his coach to Michigan State yeah oh sorry I I was just going to say another guy who followed him that we talked about earlier with Brock that I'm excited for you to watch is Jack Vin the tight end he is phenomenal eight touchdowns last year and he's just one of those guys who he has a presence and the connection that they have and the continuity from them knowing each other last year but I didn't mean to cut you off no absolutely and Jonathan Smith has done a great job bringing in guys to help 8 in house through those Growing Pains you're talking about a tight end you you you hear Brock talk about the the center which is yeah phenomenal for a quarterback to has a have a center or an old lineman that he's familiar with and calling out the the defense yeah I want to say I'm really interested in in Tanner Miller and just kind of what you're talking about like the the history of this program is when they were great when Mark Antonio had this thing rolling and they were winning Big 10 championships and going to the college football playoff the four team college football playoff they had Elite offensive lines and I think when I look at they've had some good years here they had a really good year with kenth Walker a few years ago but when you look at kind of generally what's changed here with Michigan State I think it's the offensive line and I know you would agree Ashley it was an area where when we were at camp they're not totally sold on it it's tough to build it as quickly as they're building it they believe in the guys that they have there they just wish they had more of them yeah that's that's exactly right they said we feel pretty good about four or five and it's going to be the depth issue is always a thing and we know offensive line I think that if you go to every coach in the country it's going to be a common denominator that they want more dogs up front you can never have enough you can never have enough dog keep them fresh yeah no it's it's going to be interesting and I do think I said it to Brock but Jonathan Smith he said this is a much different situation than what I stepped into at Oregon State and that you know for people who who don't remember Gary Anderson left the program during the year the year before it was chaos and also the portal wasn't what it is now so the fact that you can get 61 guys to come in to a program um it's going to be fun to watch and I think for Michigan State fans as they get to know Jonathan Smith he's not the guy who's going to win the press conference per se because that's not him he his whole thing is low ego high output and the proof will be in what he is able to build and I would just say institutionally I think that matches Michigan State to a it is a perfect fit it felt really perfect to me when we were there and I think it's unfair in some ways to compare people to other people but he gives off a little bit of a Mark D Antonio Vibe my kids would say he's marked Antonio adjacent right like there's there just kind of the way that he goes about wanting to build it the things that he believes in feel very similar to institutionally what Michigan state is always been about and and certainly what dantonio how he got them going is very similar to The Blueprint that Jonathan Smith was talking to us about yep Jonathan Smith said I feel comfortable here this feels like home so looking forward to seeing how it all goes down down but day number one of the Jonathan Smith era getting set to kick off here as the fans are trickling in it's a new era of Sparty football little weather delay but kickoff coming up uh 10 after the hour here on Big 10 Network we hear recalibrating windshield you get a crack in your windshield there's only one choice saight The Big Show tonight on the Big 10 Network history will be made when Oregon and Washington Deb in the big all part of huge slate of action Saturday only on the Big 10 Network coming up tonight in East laning it's Michigan State hosting Florida Atlantic Jonathan Smith he's still got it it's feeling good two thumbs up former walk-on quarterback at Oregon state that turned his moer around now he's looking to rebuild in East Lancing and yeah fans getting fired up as you take a look at Twitter one of two games tonight going on it's a great Friday night week one of the Season Wisconsin hosting Western Michigan and their season opener tonight that's 8:00 Central and we will have you covered all night here on the Big 10 Network as we are counting down to kickoff Marcel ree Ashley Adamson back with you in our big 10 studio so let's take a Time and talk about this Wisconsin game tonight because I think Badger fans are excited for a year two under Luke fickle um and you think about the jump that he made in Cincinnati from year one to year two I think they're hoping that he's going to do the same thing in Madison absolutely Badger fans have a a ton of reasons to be optimistic about this Badger season this year Luke ficko from 2017 to 2018 made the jump from Cincinnati went from four wins to 11 wins that means he's done it before he's been in this place and he know knows where he wants to go he wants to go the same places that you all in Badger country want to go and make this jump the second year yeah and I think a big part of that is going to be how the quarterback settles in so Tyler van djk comes in wins the starting job he was a three-year starter at Miami he had three different offensive coordinators in three years he's now going to have another offensive coordinator in Phil Longo what do you want to see from him tonight what are you expecting from Wisconsin new QB I want them to start fast and from to of Van Dyk specifically I want him to show that experience that you're talking about he's had different offensive coordinators he's been in different systems so he can help lead this team to where they want to go especially offensively what I will caution the badger fans is expect the big jump to start with defense it's much easier to be a defensive starter than an offensive starter when you come to talking about building a team and the reason for that Ashley is this on offense we have to build fires it has to start organically you need continuity you need timing on defense if you play with energy a good attitude effort and toughness you can be extremely successful cause turnovers and be sound defensively so expect this defense to lead the jump and lead the uh lead these Badgers to success yeah and it's going to be uh just a couple of weeks before Bama comes to Camp Randall so a couple games to see the team that they have looking forward to that one kicking off at 8:00 tonight but coming up next here on the Big 10 Network it is Michigan State how about that Mark anonio we were talking about him earlier spending some time with Jonathan Smith the new head coach shaking hands Danny Rogers will be on the sidelines for this game and she caught up with the new Sparty head coach moments ago let's take a listen before your first game as head coach of these Michigan State Spartans you told me pregame is when you'll process all the emotions what are the emotions you're processing right now coach well definitely excited about it just finished the Spartan walk a bunch of fans out there with some energy and and looking forward to it and we we're working really hard and it's a culmination of all that work you know starting tonight quarterback Aiden ches 18 years old will make his first Collegiate start tonight why is he ready for this moment I think he's instinctive he's competitive he works really hard at it um you know besides just the physical Talent he has and you know everyone's got to make a first start at some point um and we feel like he's ready to do that tonight thanks coach good luck all right we're getting closer to kickoff in East Lancing the 2024 season about to get underway we'll be back with much more on the pregame right after this [Applause] if you want to stand for something greater you have to run and jump fall and get back up again just show that stand for something it will stand forever Gatorade is it in you and there's Melly corta choosing her Club wait that's not a wedge that's her home of Super Bowl 59 126 first on the scene chorine gas dispatch we have a problem think of this as a poison cloud of death oh God it's heading your direction I won't leave you behind fall back 911 lar Premier September 23rd on Fox two of the new Big 10 teams on the Big 10 Network tomorrow we cannot wait oddson Stadium the Ducks ranked third nationally time for their best spot ever in the preseason they will host Idaho and then Big 10 after dark at Husky Stadium Washington played for the national title last year essentially starting over though new head coach and Jed fish 20 of their 22 starters for the national championship game are gone they will take on Weber State 11 Eastern 8 Paci paciific and Marcel you know a thing or two about both of those teams let's start with Washington start with the Alma moer it's a fascinating rebuilding job for jetfish kayin dor did an amazing job ends up leaving for Alabama they already had a lot of guys who were going to leave you had some others exit through the portal there are a lot of unknowns here what do you know about Washington this is what I know first impressions are everything Dave so when you're entering the Big 10 for the very first time you want an outstanding showing it doesn't matter who you're playing against be physical be fast be relentless and impose your will on that other team I've talked to jeed fist a few times during this offseason and he is absolutely excited he's has anyone who's everyone that he knows come into this program and speak to these kids and let them know that they're supporting the Huskies and he knows a ton of people J Fish has been around in football he's been the NFL obviously in college we know him from his time of the Big 10 in Minnesota and Michigan how how important is that of an attribute for a coach who is essentially starting from scratch the notion that you've been so many different places and seen so many people do it at a really high level Dave it's extremely important especially in this day and age with the Trans reporter nil and everything else understanding that these young men want to get to the next level and they want to know what a kind of experience that you have so when you have a guy like Jed fish who knows everyone and has the the big list of big lists and can name drop with everyone he's bringing them into the program I think it's going to pay dividends down the line got the Apple Cup coming up in a couple weeks got to get ready for that huh it it's kind of bizarre because you're not used to having it this early in the season so they got to ramp up really fast and get this thing going and Oregon will play Oregon State in a couple weeks as well as we mentioned they've got a game coming up tomorrow night though against Idaho there's so much excitement about the Ducks this year bringing in Dylan Gabriel this a team preseason number three as I mentioned time for their best ranking ever in the preseason this is a team that can legitimately win the national championship obviously you got to get breaks along the way it's hard to forecast but what needs to happen for them to be a national championship caliber team I almost feel like you're rubbing it in a little bit talking about this preseason ranking of that green team in the Pacific Northwest but coming from a Husky and we have to be honest here on the Big 10 Network they're a really good team they are a really good team Dan lenning has done a fantastic job with this team building this team and rebuilding this team because he send so so many to the next level I think for Oregon they're going to have to beef up that o line and gain continuity really really fast they're used to kind of playing basketball on Turf because they they're so fast and they play with such speed but here in the Big 10 and you're playing these teams and you're playing in the best league in the country you're going to have to be a little bit tougher and grind out some of these games down the stretch I think the one thing that really stood out to me in kind of getting ready for these teams and watching them last year is how good they both were in the trenches season to go I me Washington was fabulous they won the Joe Moore award as the best offensive line Oregon was the finalist for that as well they really think at Oregon they're not just ready for the big 10 but that they can be elite at both lines and the evidence last year I think would be overwhelming to support that this is a very different Oregon team than I think a lot of us in the Big 10 maybe last experienced when they played Ohio State for the national championship 10 years ago you're absolutely right and I think they're going to surprise a lot of people about how tough they actually can be they've been getting ready for this for a few years now and I think they're ready to step up to the plate all right so we are excited about those games tomorrow but we're getting you ready for Michigan State here tonight we've talked a lot about Jonathan Smith making his head coaching debut for Michigan State here tonight against Florida Atlantic an interesting coaching transition and Marcel you are a guy who knows a thing or two about coaching transitions this boggles my mind but you spent 10 years with the Raiders seven different head coaches oh yeah it it's it's fortunate let's just let that breathe for seven different head coaches it's fortunate and unfortunate at the same time fortunate because you get to learn a ton of different system you gain a a an immense amount of of experience and learning so you get to learn on the fly so anywhere you go you can step in the building and you know what they're talking about you know terminology you can relate it to things that you've had in the past but here on the other side it's a little Smith is going to to focus he been focusing all the way through theing the win and everything else about installing and and implementing his culture his style of of play his style of how they go about their business and preparation and that's what's going to be the most important thing for him during this course of this transition because listen he's standing into a place in Michigan State where they're used to being good being on the map coach Antony was was phenomenal around in the country everyone knew who he was they knew what type of style of football they were going to play so guess what he has to put Sparty football back on the map I do think it's great and Ashley was talking about it earlier with Brock just how many people he brought with him yes and how many key players came with him from Oregan State just this notion of hey that that kind of everyone he doesn't have to teach his staff his culture right right he just has to teach his players his culture and and then you got a number of players who already know that culture Aiden Charles being first and foremost among them let's go on the field check out some of those players suiting up for the Spartans tonight a guy who was there a year ago Nate Carter they had trouble getting the Run game going a year ago what do you think about Carter as we enter 2024 look at the young man he's built like an action figure first of all he was the second most hit but running back in the Big 10 only to manangi over at Ruckers which means he can take it hit and he's tough and he's resilient he's a durable back if they could figure out how to get a hat on a hat up front get him to the second level they're going to be just fine in the r it's pretty amazing a year ago they did not have a running back run for a touchdown in the last 10 games we'll see if they can change that tonight good Target there in the passing game in monor Foster another great thing for Aiden Charles in his transition of being a young man he has a legit number one receiver in Foster and I'm looking forward to to seeing how they get him open and put him in positions where he can be successful and and have a big Target for Aiden child they raved about him in Camp raved about Nick Marsh The Freshman as well past E's got to be better how about transfer Ed Woods from Arizona State coming from the West Coast in Arizona state in the Pack 12 he's used to seeing big fast receivers and he's a big kid himself 61 180 pounds look like he gained a little bit of muscle during this off season I'm looking forward to seeing if he can be the guy to shut off half that field that corner they were last in the Big 10 in pass efficiency defense a season ago certainly need help in that regard we are counting down to kickoff at Spartan Stadium you see the band taking the field all the pageantry of big 10 football will kick it off off less than 10 and a half minutes from now on the Big 10 Network a message from the Sonic Department of research and delicious did you know your new favorite burger has hand smash patties made to order hot and melty cheese and a Tangy sauce how rude of me let me introduce your devices are listening to your stomach it's time for a new era of chicken a slow roasted era a gadia shaped era a Cheesy Saucy era the Cantina chicken quesadilla only a Taco Bell The Big Show tonight on the Big 10 Network history will be made when Oregon and Washington debut in the Big 10 unbelievable all of slate of action Saturday only on the Big 10 Network walking out Spartan Stadium is definitely a different feeling I'm excited for 75,000 screaming fans I can't wait for that and I have chills going from the from the CRI of heads of soul my feet know just chills good chills it's excitement it's the Readiness to play for the fans there goes Carter tou number looking around the entire Stadium of 75,000 plus and seeing them Sho white it's amazing electric atmosphere and I can't wait to get back out there well he doesn't have to wait much longer the moment is here Michigan State and FAU and there's a familiar face on the other sideline tonight Tom Herman the former Ohio State OC now in his second year coaching the owls not sure if you guys caught what he said this week Herman was asked about the experience of playing in East Lancing and he said yeah that environment no offense to their brothers in an arbor but it was significantly louder in Spartan Stadium than it was in the big house so you know old rivalries die hard I was going to say there might have been some offense to that spy fan Lov it though he could say no offense not so subtle is he exactly uh what is important about tonight what do you want to see because again on paper this should be a game that that Michigan State should win but what is most important for you to see in Jonathan Smith's first game they just have to start fast yes this game is important but for me and all the rest of the fans we're looking at next week they come out and start right away in Big 10 play they have Maryland this is a toughest league in the country they're going to have to win games so basically they got one preseason game make it right yeah that Maryland game next week here on the Big 10 networks we get into conference play pretty quickly but yeah it does heighten the intensity for this one no doubt Marcel when you know you have a big one like that Lumi absolutely all right we are ready to take it out to East Lancing FAU a team that last year was a bit better defensively than offensively so we'll see if Michigan State can get this offense going last time we saw the Spartans and Spartan pants probably don't need to be reminded of this they had 53 yards of offense against pen State I guarantee it'll be better here tonight Jason Ross Jr Brock fine Danny Rogers standing by enjoy the first half we'll see it time the following is a presentation of the Big 10 conference the first Spartan walk on a game day for new head coach Jonathan Smith on his first game day as head coach for Michigan State the start of a new era in he's Lancing is next on Big 10 Network [Music] always an extra Buzz around opening night at sparton Stadium on a Friday night this one a little more extra Buzz to try to start the Jonathan Smith era off on the right foot [Applause] they take the field for the first time under their new head [Applause] coach n and0 on Friday night game since 2011 and welcoming in Florida Atlantic tonight to kick off the season Spartans versus ows from Spartan Stadium in beautiful East Lancing Michigan striping up the stadium tonight and a soldout crowd should be fun one welcome you inside Jason Ross Jr Brock Fen Danny Rogers a new season a new era here in East laning Brock Jonathan Smith you feel like his personality his Aura really fits what Spartan football did when it was at its best Jason there's a reason why every college football fan Coast to Coast had the same reaction when he was hired yeah that kind of makes sense why because the style of football that organ state was playing these past seasons is the exact style of football that Michigan State played when they are at their best hard-nosed defensively LED and mistake free let's talk about some of the names that came over from Oregon state with Jonathan Smith start with the quarterback Aiden shiles he's going to be a captain today at just 18 years old how about that but don't get that confused with inexperience yes he he hasn't had any starts but he has seen significant playing time in nine different games he has played Big Time football and now after an offseason taking all the reps with the ones he's ready to show his stuff flip it over so now talk about this def Michigan State it was an area of struggle a season ago what's the state of the Michigan State Defense right now heading into this year well the fact is if this defense doesn't play better it doesn't matter what this offense does they can score a th points it won't make a difference now the linebacker room is the key Joe rosi the new defensive coordinator was over the moon about this room so much versatility guys with their hands in the dirt guys lining up in the B Gap guys off ball in coverage coverage linebackers were kind of the issue their ailles he a year ago so until the rest of the defense comes along you can bet your money on that linebacker room let's talk to their opponent there's the head coach of Florida Atlantic Tom Herman Big 10 fans known from Ohio State when he was the offensive coordinator for the Buckey National Title team in 2014 he was six and0 at Houston during his time there as head coach against Power five opponents so he he knows how to go into a big stadium and knock off a big program you see some of the Big 10 connections really littered throughout the course of this Florida Atlantic staff a lot of respect between the two staffs Michigan State and Florida Atlantic a lot of really fun story lines to dip into tonight for now let's go down to the third member of our crew Danny Rogers and say hi for the first time hi Jason back in July when Camp rolled around there were 61 new faces on this Michigan State roster head coach Jonathan Smith told me the first step in just getting everyone to row in the same direction was they had to learn each other's names coach Smith had a PowerPoint ready to go that only included every single player's head shot it was like a pop quiz he'd call on a random player and they would have to Rattle off their teammates name and Hometown he took it one step further when he had each of his 10 position coaches draft a team of about 10 players they'd have competitions of rock paper scissors basketball soccer shootouts where you could only kick with your left foot coach Smith has thought of everything when it comes to Bringing together this new era of Spartan football get to know the new faces we're going to try to introduce it to him throughout the course of the night Jonathan Smith said he he looked around and he saw the big wins this program has had big 10 titles Rose b games big bow game wins said he wanted to restore it back to where it once was that was a part of the Allure of taking this job and now going to kick off the season against Florida Atlantic in his debut as head coach Danny mentioned the 61 new faces on this roster and the fun ways they're going about organizing the chemistry Jonathan Smith wearing the green he's got to get used to that was a forbidden color when he was at Oregon State in foral of course organ the main rival there before that he was at Washington right right green has not been in his closet in a long time but boy does it look good he looks good on him Spartans F thinks he look good pretty pretty good on him as well saw aot round there running back to return this kickoff for Florida Atlantic it'll come from Carter Davis striping out the stadium and he's Lancing feels like pressing a reset button if you're a Michigan State fan a new era but no easy task tonight against this Florida Atlantic team so now we get to see the 18-year-old Captain Aiden childes comes out wearing the sea on his jersey has really galvanized this group with the number two transfer portal QB had 91 Collegiate snaps at Oregon State it was interesting he would come in every third series never started the games this is his first career start but he's got a good chunk of experience in front of big crowds and if you were concerned at all about the excitement about this quarterback well when he took the field for warm-ups the entire student section broke out in an aid and child's chant for about five minutes they cannot wait to see number two get to work his first snap in the Michigan State uniform wants to throw it on his first snap going [Music] downi that offs off the it was not he wanted mon Foster and in on the coverage was bugs Brown fantastic effort here by bugs Brown because monor Foster is trying to get that second effort now bugs Brown the feet are in bounds but not before he is able to control that football great job locating going to get a closer look here that left foot that right foot but it's just too late still tremendous coverage there of course that is one of the reviewable plays so it will be reviewed very first play of the game whether or or not that bugs Brown interception off the Kum was caught inbounds so this is our new big Ted replay Center in Rosemont beautiful new setup so you've got 18 game monitoring stations review stations a collaborative space for the replay officials to come together in Rosemont and make this decision so that is where all the decisions are made now you're seeing it again on the right side of your screen did bugs Brown make that play inbounds initial from us again Baro is a no and that should not take away from the effort of bugs of course the first two toe Taps are inbounds the third toe tap is the one that is out of bounds I do not see him firmly control that football and hold it up until the third one going to watch that right foot ball not secured until right there and that right foot right there is the one that you're going to see that toe just over that white line right there all right we're going to bring in Mike R to get his thoughts on this Mike what do you think looking at that replay I'll tell you this is a great way to start a football game I mean one that is so close like this uh the to me the question is the left toe with control does he absolutely establish control when that left toe is still on the ground that's the one that I'm player number 11 don't I mean I like it has an incomplete pass but you know when you look at it and look at that left toe see what Brian Bank [Applause] says and so they rule at the interception they rule at the interception and it was that left toe that was that left toe coming up off the ground when he got possession of the ball since that toe was just barely still on the ground that's what they Ed toh turn it into an interceptions thanks Mike appreciate it again this ruled in interception after being initially ruled out of bounds they overturn the call Florida Atlantic takes over after intercepting the first pass of the game up near Midfield with some pretty good field position they think the ground game is going to be a key aspect of what they do that CJ Campbell the running back early gain of two they want to try to establish that early now for Michigan State you got to emotionally bounce back after the early mistake that's one of the toughest things your defense is so excited to watch Aiden Charles get to work and now before you know you're being handed your helmet saying hey it's your time to go that was a pick FL Atlantic also has a transfer quarterback in cam fer but they go to the ground again on the second play of the game running right into the teeth of that Michigan State Defense was Campbell again no gain that time dcoin D says no leading to a third and long and something to monitor is how many linebacking formations you're going to see how many different groups of guys out there this is their time to shine third and eight coming up Halliday the captain out there directing [Applause] traffic going to go down in the Michigan State def and back Chris ble at the Forefront there his first tackle of the season a big one the force to put and there is just nowhere for Camp fer to go camper is one of the more athletic quarterbacks in all of college football he tries to escape but with one hand Chris Po just able to bring him in and not let him go watch he really just kind of gets him in a headlock before getting that hand on that shoulder p and that is enough monor Foster now back to bur this punt L boots it away and Foster will watch that hop into the end zone so second series for Aiden child coming up next try to bounce back ah yes un let 88 can save you big at the pump and it big network is sponsored by State Farm and by Auto Owners Insurance welcome back to Spartan Stadium the Michigan State offense comes back out after an interception on their first off play defense counters with the stop on downs and now that comes Aiden Charles what do you say to him after throwing an interception on his first pass good you say good because you wanted a touchdown but the worst possible thing that could have happened happened and here you sit your defense had your back now go do it again good get it out of the way get it out of the way early we Mike S seconds into the game I mean we're getting everything out of the way early I'm happy he was finished with this coffee we got to see the new regl center and Rosemont so they go to the ground this time with Nate Carter and he is brought down quickly so now Jon plat after making that tackle let's talk your Auto auto owners insurance impact players here you're you're talking experience for the Spartans experience for the outs absolutely Nathan Carter we still don't know what his ceiling is because of the lack of offensive line a year ago Jack Belling unquestionably one of the best tight ends in college football Jackson Ambush transferred into FAU a year ago and took over that conference and Jaden Williams a player who they called the best D on their roster nowles Andante BR over the middle receiver who hoping to have a big this season if you can have him break out in this receiving could be big for Michigan State and if you can have a quarterback that can make throws like that you're going to be fine at that pass that's what you call layering a throw over the first Defender but down to your guy before the second guy the second Defender can close that is a big time throw Brown transfer to Nebraska last season and the first completion for child gain of 15 now he's going to run it gain some weight in the off seon you'll see his legs used in a designed way can improv with it as well so that will be a dynamic of this Michigan State offense that you haven't thought of really dual threat QBs as much in the past see the Spartan offensive look up front Brandon Baldwin is the only returner on that o line Tanner Miller the center transferred from Oregon state with Aiden Charles and jacking the tight end there those are your three transfers from Oregon State the came over with the new head coach Jonathan Smith all in very important starting position for Michigan State go to the a again the Deep shot oneone intentions for Glover there is a flag out this could and probably should be a first down and it's going to be Day Day Hill getting a little grabby Jon Glover was able to get behind him and day day doing everything he could to make sure that ball wasn't [Applause] caught you're going to see Glover trying to separate but he can't because you see that fist full of jersey and time a referee sees a closed fist full of cloth they're going to throw that flag 10 times out of 10 our referee Brian Banks for tonight I've already heard from him a couple of times so up near Midfield now they go to Carter leading rusher from last season got a gaping hole in that right side led by a good block from Christian phlips gain a 13 there for Carter who's out to prove himself this season when a 6439 pound offensive lineman is going to lead me I'm going to follow him Nathan Carter I am so excited for him this season with a revamped offensive line last year he came out the gates hot the first two games had over 200 yards had four touchdowns didn't crack the 100 yard Mark after that going forward he was always getting hit behind the line of scrimmage we see what he can do with some space they go right back to him why not by the way that last car the right side of the o line of part of the o line Christian Phillips and Ashton Leo both making their first career starts and that side of the line looks pretty good on that 13 yd run so you see the 's defense Here Eddie Williams one of the linebackers made that tackle a couple of plays ago he's alongside Jackson Ambush who's kind of the Undisputed leader of the defense Ambush wears the Green Dot so he receives that coach to player communication that's new to college football this season the coach can deliver the signal into the player through the radio communication get off 15 seconds left on the play clock for the offense it's the QB receiving it he hands it off and Carter again trying to power their way when you think of Oregon State's offense last year there was a physical imprint up front and we feel that carrying over to how Michigan State wants to start out this game when Lose or Draw nobody pushed around Oregon State right did they win every game absolutely not but more often than not they were The More Physical team and you never left that field thinking that team's soft that is not the case with the Jonathan Smith coach team and that will not be the case with Michigan State going forward you see the Green Dot on the back of Aiden Charles helmet there saw it on Jackson ambush's helmet the linebacker for Florida Atlantic so third and six how can Char handle his third down ball comes out nearly the second turnover of this opening quarter for Michigan State and that time was an example of almost trying to do a little too much there to you just go down here doing a little too much timing was off there that was a designed run meaning it was a QB draw so yes he he he's standing back looking like he's ready to pass but the offensive line took off way before he was ready to run all that was just a timing issue something to clean up on the sideline one thing that is inexcusable though is putting that ball on the ground so it'll be Ryan Eckley coming out to punt Amari Hayes back to receive it and this spting hop and a get start to special te for Michigan State right on the one 40 yd punt down by elante Brown be right back good morning everybody Danny what are you doing up Room CJ Campbell j a guy who they feel has the home run capability he's gotten the carries so far and he is in your owners insurance impact players he's on that do Walker Award watch L for the re for a reason Fang he has seen more football than anyone who's been with the program since 2019 Cal holiday and Angelo gross the two most experienced Defenders for the Spartans he'll fake it V press and drops safetyin D first points of the season for Michigan State put two on the board how about that a defensive tackle gets to say I scored the first points in the new era of football I hope he walks right over to his offense and say you thought you were going to get the first points D is not the biggest guy but what he has is a motor you see him Blow by that left guard right there and T just has nowhere to gock I'm not going to lie to the people you said during the commercial break you got like some sort of vision in the future here because you said during the commercial break you're calling safety I I hope everyone in the truck right now can back that up because Jason is not ly I like what I see out of this defense and with this Florida Atlantic offense being very spread there's not some fullbacks there's not any really any tight ends on the roster they had to go spread and when you have guys like d who just flies off the line of scrimmage planted that right foot made an inside move Blows By him like a Turn Style and cam fer unfortunately just doesn't even have time to think you get the magical orb my friend what stock should we invest in next week here I'll tell you that often we can't go driving up the price you know we can't go driving the priceon D's price is rising here absolutely elante BR back to return and Aiden chars will be anxiously awaiting to come out for his third series now to try to tack on to this opening two points here in and when you talk about a new era of football what better way to start it off than a safe little room for brown and the with some really good Fain of2 on that return round one thing that Michigan state has been missing in recent years was a dynamic returner and you see elante brown perfect patience you see he didn't go full speed right away start slow bait everyone to kind of thin their angle make an angle planting inward toward you and then boom you plant that foot and get outside and eat up those angles a dynamic returner is something the Spartans have needed and man they may have found one already they call him Cadillac and he's moving like a Cadillac there they call him Cadillac alance deserving of the name after that on the play want to take the Deep shot didn't come momentum momentum momentum though they were trying to really build on it there and it felt like they were right there Jason what I love this was the same exact play that was their first offensive snap of the game Long play action max protect deep posst now the first time was an interception this time Aus just not able to bring it in it would have taken a hell of an effort but I love that they are not shying away I love that they are showing Aiden child we trust you you are going to keep slinging that thing until it clicks got to love the truster showing in him early especially after the interception on his first pass crust hasn't wavered whatsoever Carter had a 13 yd run in their last series little jump cut there going to bring up third down though here early looked at Aiden Childs so that second Drive of course longer but a little more promising and now building on it and you're seeing how long he can get that ball down the field as well he has a big arm he he is absolutely an athlete and in the Oregon State offense it was more catch and run than really Chuck it but we've seen twice now he can let it go when he needs to turns 19 next month a captain at 18 years old on Third and seven quick throw FL caugh by got a t of open for him but is this coming back is the in the realm of a legal formation with how quickly that flag came out so we'll hear again from Brian BS we apologize for Brian's mic not working there that's going to be a legal shift not a legal formation but in the same realm of guys not being detailed enough with their alignment and uh big gain is called back part of the chemistry you're trying to organize all new faces on this team 61 new faes Total most in the Big 10 third and 12 they've taken one deep shot in this drive they need 12 here did they get enough on the first career catch for Nick Marsh it's going to be right up there star recruit freshman wide out big hopes for him don't be shocked that this is four down territory by the way but the true freshman Nick Marsh they were all so excited about him when he committed to the program and I love that they get him involved early that is a bullet of a throw Marsh able to use that body and bring it in and Jason they're staying aggressive decision time early and they're going to go for it on Fourth and two pack house here at Spartan Stadium they love the aggression early on Belling they brought in motion to try to block and get this two yard with Carter where it looks like they're marking it Tom Herman pleading his case on the fa sideline Michigan State sideline including their case he looked initially like they would move it and they do first down for Michigan State [Applause] [Music] Nate Carter may not be lighting up the stat sheet right now but he's getting those reliable yards when they need him too guy who's always grinding in the weight room Nate Carter got married in the off season he's kind of the 22-year-old mature guy in that backfield of childes who's only 18 they are going to go and review this spot so under review is whether or not Nate Carter had enough for the first down and needed two yards it's going to be close and it has to be indisputable and it's that left elbow that looks to hit the ground first but how far forward was the football at his right hand when that left elbow hit that's what the experts are trying to figure out and the call on the field was that they did get the first down the fourth and twos and fourth and ones you can pretty much assume that unless they're backed up in their own End Zone Michigan state is going to stay aggressive throughout the season on [Music] those another look at it here didn't necessarily see the change in that well there it is it will stand first down going to bring Mike perer back in Mike another visit our second visit early on in this first quarter that ruling there what do you think I think I'm just going to stay in this position the whole game um I think I I think that the first the first reversal was a little technical in my opinion this one I think is right I think it might be short but it really wasn't that clear shot and you made the call about you can't see the ball on the right hand so it was best to leave it as fall thanks for hanging out Mike we'll see you in a little bit don't go farles rolls and has his Target massis the tight end got cut down out on the edge there by Desmond tisdall but a gain of eight so getting the tight ends involve for the first time and tisle does not make that tackle as soon as may still be running coach said he had as solid of a camp as anybody when you think of those Oregon State offenses and the offense they're going to implement here tight ends tight ends tight ends we'll probably see four of them all with the reception at some point today Jack Belling got the start at tight end he's one of the players who came over from Oregon State second and three Playbook can open up here but Carter got draged down really Goods Around The Edge from Jones a loss of two there on the Chris Jones tackle fantastic effort you're going to see him over here on the left side of your screen and look at him just track down first off look at that get off the Olympics were last month look at that get off and when it takes that long for the action to go to get the ball to your running back there's nothing you can do screaming off the side two on third down so far the best thing about a successful game is the play action off of it because right now Aiden Childs could have taken his pick there were two options that were wide open the Florida Atlantic defense is really struggling to decipher when it's a run play and when it is play action credit to the offensive line for making one look just like the other gain of 22 when you asked Jonathan Smith what do you want the identity of this offense to be he mentioned balance seeing that on their best drive so far roll out to the [Music] impr INE yeah bugs Brown in the coverage that's up great coverage there watch Aiden child with a little hes pretending like he doesn't see him boom let me get some extra space I would have loved for him to just take his three or four yards and get out of bounds safely but I can't knock y old wanted to get the end zone in his first starts bus Brown is sticking like flue to these wide receivers had the interception earlier and tremendous coverage there you're feeling the competitiveness in Childs early on and I love it I love it go back to the balance and up the middle first time we see KRON Lynch Adams the transfer new addition to this back field so another older back in his sixth year stops in rter and UMass UMass through the spring so you wanted to point out marck when Oregon state was in the Red Zone they went to Jack Belling of course Aiden Charles comes from Oregon State jacken comes from Oregon State he's the guy we're looking at here jacken isolated up top Foster's going to come over but that doesn't mean you cannot take your eyes off of the 12 third and seven they look that direction it's Belling instead blocking for Foster and he got dropped down by Eddie Williams by the ankles and the ball came out at the end and it's going to go to florid Atlantic so the second Michigan State turnover of this opening quarter derails their first trip down into the Red Zone tight Quarters here we're going to see the ball come out monu Foster had it and then lost it Florida Atlantic football when we come back whoa Nelly iPhone 15 with tons of being played you can't access any other game previous but you can access the game that you're currently in Florida Atlantic's last Drive resulted in a safety it's Campbell on the carry as msu's last forced safety before that you had to go back to December 5th of 20 20 against Ohio State but dcoin D had the tackle in the end zone that gave this crowd some juice early on but if you're floor Atlantic you made a good points making you can't let the underdog in a match up like this feel that belief absolutely you have to step on that belief as early as possible Michigan state has not done that yeter the transer from Marshall slides down and then there goes the FL so this is very interesting because the Michigan State coaching staff actually told us they were kind of worried on film about how relatively late cam fer slides Jordan Hall made the contact there and that's probably what the referees are discussing as we speak he he really flirts with danger he gets down at the last possible second and anybody defensive minded is going to see that as unfair watch how long it takes fer to get down I mean it's so tough does he make contact with a quarterback who has slid yes under a minute to go now in this first quarter pitch it first time we've seen that in this fla Atlantic offense just a quick gain of three there the DBS finally able to stick their hats on something the Michigan State defensive line has handled everything so long that the DBS don't even have their jerseys dirty yet so now B designed run another slide they're going to give him enough here for the first down as the clock winds down in the first quarter and we're going to look at this slide again that is late I mean you you you have a Defender who H who's making contact with your right shoulder pad before you even start the slide it's it's a very tough situation no Flags out that time but it is the end of the first quarter two on the board for Michigan State after for the safety in the opening frame of the Jonathan Smith era second quarter coming up next L if you guys are new make sure hit the Subscribe button I appreciate a lot also turn on notifications before she was the most want to see what else are hiding cuz that person lies for a whole new way to nug got to be Wendy's two nothing Michigan State get into the second quarter 20 yards a piece for each offense in that opening quarter well Danny caught up with Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith coach despite an interception on the first play of the game for Maiden child he has not wavered from the past game What's going to help him continue to settle in here yeah we got to kind of settle in as a group offensively we got a couple procedure things obviously finishing dries St putting the ball on the ground that's so we got to say aggressive we still want to be able to mix the thing throwing and running it so really please where our defense kind of keeping us around this thing thanks coach so here yet another play where fer is sliding and it leads to some contact late both sides now getting involved with each other after the last hit and F's helmet came off never want to see that hope he's okay there we'll dissect this and get another look at it unfortunately Jason this is let's see see the slide here it's oh yeah and unfortunately Malik Spencer is flirting with ejection that that's that that's going to be a tough one to justify now again he's he's doing this kind of unorthodox hop slide thing to where he's he's in the air longer than a guy who's just getting down on the ground as quickly as possible now that is not to justify Malik spener who that is clear targeting so we'll bring Mike back in here on the targeting call M that latest contact again on another slide but that one looks like targeting what was your thought yeah here's the issue here the minute that you start to break down as the runner you become basically down the play is over and so then you become defenseless so now any contact to the head or neck area any forcible contact to the head or neck area with the helmet with the shoulder with the forearm wrist any of those turns into targeting because he's a defenseless player and this clears to me is targeting as you guys both said great break down Mike so again defenseless player and again it's on another slide of the Michigan State coaching staff was telling us ahead of the game that thought this could potentially happen because of's consistency with how he slides yes now just to clear it up that applies to the first two slides this one Malik Spencer low his head that is textb tting if you ask me but it doesn't why you see Malik Spencer in denial and why the sideline is so frustrated they're saying he is sliding so late his slide is unorthodox we're we're flying around at 100 miles hour am I supposed to aim at his knee when he slide I I understand the frustration but that was a bad look right there and Spencer based off that hand motion is going to to be done and we apologize for the official mic not working but it is a disqualification for Malik Spencer so he's out gives some motivation to his ex his DBS there he's one of the leaders in this secondary you see voy of course as well with his play on the field 72 tackles last season so now they left to go a little deeper in the depth chart with the St with the starter D and the good news is Dylan Tatum is now entering the field and Dylan Tatum is also very experienced not as experienced as as Malik Spencer but none of the calls will be for to him he's seen plenty of game action so it's number 21's time to shine he's ready for it 30 yard and penalties on this drive Rock both on QB hits now Tyreek Starks the backup quarterback for Florida Atlantic will come in Fan's helmet came off have to leave or at least a play so Starks comes in as the ows are the deepest they michig State territory now into the second quarter they'll run it with Moy who made holiday Miss and got dragged down on the sideline there good tackle on the boundary Angelo gross saving the day here because Cal holiday misses that tackle and if Angelo gross is not there and able to knock out the ball with a great effort bar moley is able to hit that edge and reach P great job there by the nickel so fer back in now again had to go out for a play because his helmet came off second and eight coming up left has to roll out being pressured here by dunan now he'll use his legs and get out of bounds this time brings third down and what feels like a big third down early Dylan Tatum was the closest to him slim gain of one there he is a dangerous Runner what he does here is you see him spin he gets some depth in order to beat that defensive vent to the edge before he's been trying to step up in the pocket find the window and run now he's trusting his speed and getting some dep that's a dangerous situation for the Michigan State Defense five on third down dark over the middle intercepted it's Angelo with the it's been a turn fast early and michig state takes it right back after they gave it away for a second time 35 starts of experience coming into the season for GR we just saw Malik Spencer get disqualified STS up gets the and the Spartan off takes over when we come back from East l we see the promises you make doing more than your fair share working twice as hard my knowledge from the experiences that I've had to help people grow and develop that's an important aspect of what we do as Leaders the best days at Home Depot were the days that I'm in the stores in distribution centers in call centers with our Frontline Associates listening to to what they think and what they need those are the best days as a CEO I'm Craig maner former CEO of the Home Depot and a Michigan State graduate Angelo gross with the int to give the Spartans back third turnover of this game more turnovers than points so far defense is is back here in East Ling your drive chart so far is it selfish to say I love it you're a defensive guy is that selfish at all if anything this offense should have confidence that the defense has their back if your Michigan State you just need to go out there and play mistake three and the last Drive was the longest the Spartans got all the way down in the Red Zone before the fumble go down the seene here Char was hit as he threw that kind of derailed that pass intended from onori foster child pops up the route took quite a while to develop and unfortunately Charles gets hit right before he can release that ball ball monor Foster coming on the Dig rout it was a long developing play and child just ran out of time they brought a corner Blitz that time with bugs Brown what's up doc Florida Atlantic staff watched a lot of Oregon State fil the prep for this ton of crossover terms a film watching from these two coaching staffs child has to improvised again here in scoots out of bounds for Michigan State they were watching Marshall film to prep for camp adventure and then defensively Florida Atlantic was watching Joe Rossy film Joe Rossy the new defensive coordinator for Michigan State who comes over from Minnesota they watching his Minnesota film ton of cross we Mayhem with with transfer portal era you got to go watch okay this receiver was where I got to go watch some maou film this offensive coordinator game from here I got to go watch some UTEP film it's it's it's a beautiful chaos that is college football beautiful beautiful chaos back in business third and eight Fifth Third Down of the day for Michigan State they want oneon-one here and that is catch the ball you see him looking for the ball he never saw it he did not realize and Aiden child's understandably upset how long does it take to get that chemistry down it it takes a while it does take a while now the effort to stop running because you don't see the ball that's the thing that elante is going to have to explain to his coach on the sideline EO has a big leg will punt spiral boot down to Hayes lets it fall into his chest now cuts it back TR to spin out of trouble it's brown who brings him down there's a flag that came out late it is way back at up the the side of the field where Michigan State punted it on the 45 what started off as a block got a little extracurricular and I'm curious if Florida Atlantic is going to get the flag for [Applause] that we'll be right back on the other side these Landing we are always in motion getting this fixing that arriving to destinations in life and around the globe sometimes it's beautiful sometimes it's a Eastern Time start wall toall coverage ready for this is in this is in the circle of trust I have a twin that the studio doesn't know about so thankfully I can get a full night's sleep my twin will be over there in the studio midnight Ro yes exactly I like it opens up here for one of your impact players Campbell got dragged down by the legs Dylan Tatum who stepped up to make the play and play some Malik Spencer right now and this is what makes CJ Campbell so dangerous not only can he break tackles he has the burst to get to that hole but when it's wide enough for a truck to drive through Campbell doesn't have to do much FAU has proven to be able to move the ball fine it's just really they can play mistake free they can be the first one to get some offensive points on the board V will go to the throw inter of the first for michig state and Martinez who it is doding tra has theed Malik Spencer and [Applause] how about some defense Martinez catches that ball and immediately turns into a punt returner cam fer lets that ball sail but that doesn't Overlook the tremendous coverage out there on the outside but when the ball sails like that that's about the easiest interception Martinez is going to get fantastic job by this defense having their offes back but if you're the offense the pressure is on help out your defense starting right now as a return to 35 Martinez had just stepped in from Elite Spencer and gets the pick fourth turnover overall we still got 12 minutes to go in the second quarter by the way Alexon Lynch Adams hop stepping through traffic before he gets brought down Lynch Adams is fun and I'm I'm excited to watch this running back Duo develop because him and Nate Carter are so similar maybe he's a little more of a Bruiser Carter maybe a step faster probably little better feet but usually you have running backs who compliment one another meaning he's the bru he's the speed guy he's the big guy he's the short guy but two guys who do similar things is is just as fun and they told us they're going to give it to whoever gets the hot hand the hot hand right now is Lynch Adams bounced off of whistle blow F think it's a touchdown looks like it will be marked at about the 11 yd line so no touchdown that's a quick whistle right there let let's see if forward progress stops Ah that's brutal now it was the referee on the far sideline who called that so from his angle if I can shoot him some bail from his angle all he saw was the pile of white jerseys because Lynch Adams spun out to our side so obviously it's a mistake obviously nobody wants 70,000 people booing them Lynch Adams deserves that touchdown and one thing of note here Brock forward progress is not reviewable we had multiple reviews today but underneath the umbrella so it is third down one for five on third down today second trip into the Red Zone fumbled the last time can they get points this time it's tles using his legs Tes into the end zone for his down in the michig state [Applause] unifor the captain quarterback calls his Zone number a an offense that has moved the ball but has struggled the designed quarterback run you saw Nate Carter first through the line there and Charles just follows him to the end zone spinning his way to six points three Place 18 yard an 11 yd Aiden child touchdown run and Jonathan Kim caps on the icing on the cake there they're able to turn the int into points this time a glimpse into the future for Spartan fans in the green and white makes his way into the end [Music] zone girl know I have congestive heart failure and it Spartan uniform to make that lead nine to nothing now after score came on the safety for us byan D we've had four turnovers in this game it's still plenty of time to go in the opening half just joining us Jonathan boot away after first of Theon the spans Jason J Brock Danny Rogers the sidelines is Jan Smith as michig state head coach trying to get a new era off on the right foot that sails out of the back of the end zone this Michigan State Defense has been forcing turnovers last couple of drives last pit came from nikai Martinez other pit came from Angelo gross would be big if they could win the turnover battle this season especially when you look at the schedule see some of the numbers tonight and the opponents they'll face in short times you have that patch in the middle of the Season where you go Ohio State Oregon Iowa Michigan these are games where you can't make mistakes yourself with this roster this developing chemistry and growing together on the Fly you also got to force some mistakes too 1,000% And in regards to that brutal stretch of the schedule if if Michigan State wants to make a bowl game which they are more than capable of doing which I feel they will do these are of course the games that you need to put out dominant performances V and the ows take back over anday the gloveless linebacker in the back field L of four that's how you shoot a again this is linebacker teach T that is how you shoot a gap look at those two guards he just passes right by them because he knows he can get into a trail position and get that quarterback on the ground Cal Hall the leader of this defense led the team in tackles the past three seasons 300 tackles over those Seasons all Jason like you said without glov gosh I love the no glov it's so Michigan State you just want him to make tackles you I love those back to the Grind game goes Florida Atlantic that's where they wanted everything to start today CJ Campbell is who they go back to this time a guy with a real businesslike approach picks up eight there to get some of that yardage back for the Michigan State group that Lineback room is going to be so important they are so deep and so versatile you'll see Darius snower you'll see them all throughout the not facing pressure this time finds Campbell who SLI out of the initial cont but did not get enough for a first down doing enough to slow him down is Martinez who again has stepped in with Spencer being disqualified for targeting and made a big impact that tackle right there is more impressive than his interception that is a heck of a tackle you have man coverage if he does not get him on the ground that guy is hitting the sideline and turning up field what a play by number one so now monori Foster will be back to return this punt another good stop for the Spartan Defense alante Brown did go into the medical tent earlier he was the originaler it was a quick flag before that ball was even kicked contact made promptly CJ Herd on the tackle see what this flag is for a legal formation will be the call and unfortunately that's a big sign of week one somebody has got to start playing some mistake free football the itch and rash 59 let's go down to Danny for more on the Corvalis to East Lancing connection Senator Tanner Miller knows he has to be a calming voice for his 18-year-old quarterback and Aiden child Miller told me yesterday if he needs to talk with his quarterback this is what he's going to tell him to leave the Superman cape at home he is not Superman and he is most certainly not Tom Brady has to be and he is at his best when he's having fun no one had more fun than after his first rushan touchdown thanks Danny T Miller leading the way there for aigon 63 [Applause] y Jason I'm going to give you guess on interior paint the big show tonight on the Big 10 Network back at it here in East laning The Vibes are buzzing right now here at Spartan Stadium after the 63 yd run for Kon Lynch Adams off the block from Tanner Miller you love how TV just flows sometimes Dan talks about Tanner Miller he sets a block KRON runs 63 yards touchdown not have worked out team allame offensive line from year B scooped up by Tucker he gets brought down Darius snow in on the tackle there one of the backup linebackers for Michigan State 16 on that return and this this defense has some momentum this Michigan State team has some momentum now after a first quarter littered with turnovers tide is starting to turn in favor of the green and white and Jonathan Smith's debut here and if you're Florida Atlantic I expect them to EXP cam fer as a runner a little more when when they were really rolling and moving that football it was it was because of his legs and I would expect Mich interceptions from Martinez and Tack one of your guys you really like on this defense Wayne Matthews transfer from Old Dominion one of the 61 new fa oh he's special he's special we talked to defensive coordinator Joe Rossy he says every third down Wayne Matthews know he is on the field probably the most athletic of all the linebackers an absolute tackling machine 135 tackles a year ago at Old Atlantic likes to move with a little more Tempo michig st's defense kind of dictating the pace right now nice move there from Zuber Moy so mentioned Florida Atlantic was watching film of Minnesota last year because that's where new Michigan State defensive coordinator Joe Rossi came from worked with PJ Fleck over there you're old neck of the woods in Minneapolis now he comes over to East laning took this drive said it was something that created a really nice balance between his experience in the Big 10 you got six members of the former Oregon State staff com over and their experience of the new teams joining the Big 10 his defense has a third and three here V in the yet to convert on third down they will hear those as he slides down got to be careful and he pops up so first down for Florida Atlantic the best way to to stop a running quarterback is you have to get to him early and I know that seems so obvious I'm just trying to stress that fer is almost always going to be one of the fastest guys on the football field if you can't slow his momentum early and he can get loose it's really going to be up to the DBS to get him on the ground because the the linebackers and D lineman really won have a shot their offensive coordinator Charli NFL quarterback said they wanted someone who could make a man or two Miss to take over this QB spot he drops back good protction up front but a covered sack down field but will roll out and there is a flag down you would think in a play like that is potentially be you could hear the crowd erupt a little bit there's a there's a pretty strong argument for holding on the left side of that offensive line but we'll see if that's the actual call personal foul hands to the face so they get hands to the face instead on Roberts and this is going to put FL Atlantic with some good field position here they'll set it up now at the Michigan State 26 if you look here on the bottom that right there is why the crowd went crazy fa that's that's that's probably holding but the fact remains fer got loose and if you don't get to him early he will make you pay late now you add yardage on top of that the SP defense is a little too close in that red zone Michigan State's given up 45 yards in penalties it's going to been the Achilles heel in these this opening half oh ball came out who can get to the of that P Woods tried to get it for the Spartans bounc down on it as well it's Ed Woods in there camer in there and it's going to stick with Florida Atlantic Sayer got to it but Michigan State desperately pleading their case however the ruling is it'll will stick with Florida Atlantic this is the second time now that there's been some quarterback running back miscommunication earlier fer went for the play fake and his running back wasn't there on this one Campbell thought fer was pulling F thought he was given expect them to clear that up on the sideline as fer credit to him a quarterback fighting to get that ball back from quarterback Ed Woods but you can expect some conversations on the sideline to clean some things up Jonathan Smith will watch this Spartan Defense reset now second and 11 they call it a loss of one bcer back to the air tried to go underneath to the crossing route and his running back CJ Campbell and a physical first [Applause] half going to add some time in the game collect also new in college football this year I feel like we keep saying that is the two-minute timeout it'll take place right at that two-minute Mark there were two games just last night that could have been decided due to that stoage of time third and 11 a big one here one for on third down so drops it off CJ Campbell makes the catch drawing their pulling down got some help tail end there now you'd think this field goal unit would probably come out for Flor Atlantic that's a safe assumption and one of the best compliments a DB unit can receive is third and long and you throw a check down or something underneath or a screen because they've set the tone that if you throw it deep you will pay for it late addition here to the to the field goal unit field goal for Carter Davis coming from 43 here rather they had their short yardage kicker in Morgan Suarez who kicks them typically from 25 and in but they'll back it up and bring in Suarez they use Suarez and Davis that one from 43 and first points on the board for Florida Atlanta Suarez was the starting kicker in 2022 he was out last year with an injury which is why Carter Davis was able to get involved and Coach Herman said well if I got two good kickers I may as well use both of them and utilize what both of them are best at that could not have been more down the center so again you start to think strategy we mentioned that two-minute timeout if you're on the floor to Atlantic side of this you mentioned some of those examples in games last night you still have three timeouts so you get a stop and then you also have that two-minute timeout to try to go and score after that heading into the locker room so just an example of the strategy here with that two-minute timeout coming up pretty soon absolutely being able to run off for five minutes with one or two first downs is the thing of the pass one of the other differences is that clock stopping as they reset the change as well when you get inside of the final two minutes of each half [Music] later tonight a new era of big 10 volleyball begins when Oregon host pit in a topown Tuesday with number Louisville don't volle tonight and Tuesday only on the Big 10 Network so you can stay up late tonight ball out in Eugene really good match up top 10 match up org coming off back to back Elite H for the first time in program history pit coming off three straight final fours we go pretty late now in the Big 10 but I love that volleyball just comes out ging the best play the best for that whole first week or so always harder moving this pile here trying to pull him down now the advanced stat sponsored by ifs got AI Michigan State offense today really those last two drives in comparison to the first four you see here highlighted in yellow only averaging three yards a carry up to that massive run by Kavon Lynch Adams we're certainly hoping for a little more of that Aiden Charles comes back out and now slings it over the middle and it is caugh by jacking his teammate at Oregon State the Coralis connection playing out here and the stadium erupts is one of the best tight ends in the country he knows how to find Space he knows the second that I clear that linebacker my quarterback is going to find me we went to practice yesterday the first thing we saw was Jack Belling flying at us he he can move going to be a big pass catcher in this offense possibly throughout the course of the Season again working off that run game like you said earlier as they fake it and roll out have seen that multiple times extended the play which he can do but couldn't hook up with Jon Glover that time you mentioned earlier about that chemistry with wide receivers when he missed elante Brown in the scene he's going to expect Jon Glover to sit down where he's at but he keeps running that's why that ball is behind so it would have been an accurate throw if he was going to sit down which he initially did before taking off again again that comes with time it's week one they will be fine but again I love the improvisation of of a he learned under djang at Oregon State in every third series he was with the Beavers hands off to Carter here tring to car some over on that sideline gain of five so now you start to think for Michigan State you don't want to give the ball back to Florida Atlantic you got the two-minute timeout coming up but first and foremost you got a third and five coming up for Aiden Giles in his offense and this third down will definitely dictate that because FAU was also thinking okay if they get this first that completely changes our strategy because now it's just we need to hold them to a field goal before this happenss if fa can get a stop then campers up with four timeouts in his pocket they got isah Johnson in now they go deep they were looking again for Glover had a couple of DBS back in Jaden Willams you really like on this FL Atlantic defense was one of them shading that route and he sniffed that out from a mile away he got a great jump on the ball and even if it was a more accurate pass there would not have been a shot Jaden Williams is special he is special look at him closing out space and honestly if it was a more accurate ball it may have been pick jadeen Williams is likely end up as a senior bull candidate and I promise you there are NFL teams with their eyes on him flag right as that ball was snapped Eckley left to wait a little longer to PT this false start kicking number 25 5y Penal still fourth down there are two things that head coaches fear most in week one it's special teams because you just don't get to practice it enough and pre- snap penalties the alignments when you're in practice is one thing the alignments when you're in front of 70,000 fans is something else and unfortunately we've we've seen that come come to roost here you have a couple of scrimmages here at Spartan Stadium but nothing like this atmosphere pack crowd strike Stadium not a single seat without someone in green or white in it rolling onari Hayes 221 to go their offense will take over there after the boot of 47 don't forget coming up at the half first half highlights preview Dave Ashley Marcel great group in the studio back in Chicago ready to break this first halftime if you're Michigan State here it's we cannot let a run pop Michigan State probably feels confident that their back end can hold firm and not let a 90 yard Drive happen through the air but cam fer has shown if he gets a crease he will get a 20 30 yard Chunk in a hurry Michigan State staff watched all of his drop backs all of his scrambles to prep so late half situation now little boost for zuer Moy and some hard contacts gain of nine Martinez came downhill to make that hit they might run this down to the two-minute timeout that's what they'll do big final two minutes for Florida Atlantic offense if you guys are new make sure to subscribe turn on noties also if you want leave a tip they are pinned in the comments even just $1 helps appreciate everyone before she was the most liberal US senator kamla the neck too he's got the green and white rocking stripe out today here at Spartan Stadium what were the Vibes like for you opening night as a player it's hard to describe man it is so special and you feel that buzz all week as long as you're a a semester School everyone's new to campus people are patting you on the back it's the greatest 88 rushing yards for this Florida Atlantic offense to just nine passing yards they're going to try to run it again here designed for cam sper slipped the initial tackle then got hit by Charles Brantley who's back after he missed the last nine games a season ago at corner really cool story for Michigan State to see him back on the field making plays but that will be enough for a Florida Atlantic first down now they're moving with Tempo have the three timeouts to work with Michigan state has all three of theirs as well that pass incomplete again only nine passing yards but that was intended from Marlin Johnson not a lot of success from fer through the air but in a situation like this with a minute 50 left and three timeouts is is is plenty but only if you can start having some success in the air which is why Michigan State cannot let him get out of the pocket cannot let him pop one it's a group comprised mostly of transfers and wide receiver for FAU so they're still trying to get the chemistry down pressure from the backside that pass is caught over the middle this time a a rare play through the air for FAU they needed 10 picked up 11 it is Hayes on the catch Martinez on The Tackle again clock stops as they reset the change inside of the final two minutes of each half to the ground they go with Mo interior sparton run defense ready for that see Jordan Turner in there one of the new additions to this Michigan State linebacking door coming over from Wisconsin Farmington Hills Michigan native back home for a high Tempo offense they're certainly the owls are certainly taking their time here pressure to the sideline this time smartly and then a catch made by Dom Henry they're going to say that was out of bounds so no incomplete pass let's look at it again Charles Brantley in coverage yeah that left heel you're right that's what I saw too that that I believe it was the left heel that that did in but a big third down ball expected to go to the air see what camper has [Applause] this going to be a free play on the jump so they go into oneon-one coverage might as well Ed Woods was back on the coverage looked like maybe a little over an there lucky to to not have a defensive pass interference there you see in the flash there Jordan Hall trying to get back he definitely didn't get back far enough Defense number five fivey penal still third [Applause] down Jordan PA special and it's a bummer because him standing up in that be Gap they really have this Micah Parson this roll kind of carved out for him he may have his hand in the dirt on the outside he may be offb he may be standing up in the B Gap and right there he just got so excited that it's about to wait for the ball to snap so now it's third and he'll have to run it and they won't get there dragged down in the back field great Chris gole lost of four he's one of the eight returners on this defense very big important returner for this defense we'll be right [Music] back what are you doing oh we did our home insurance ourselves but don't feel protected so you're building your own American Family Insurance roof line yeah you know life's better when you're protected under American family's roof that's not how it works back now fourth and seven Florida Atlant getting set to P this away still a minute three with two time outs for Michigan State see what you can get on this return Foster back and a big return here to set up Aiden and give him the shortest field possible because boy can Jonathan Kim boot it you really just have to get barely across that 50 yd line for for him to be in range they feel comfortable from 5 with line drive Punt and a roll down no chance of your return a little bit of an owl roll KCK of 39 yards under minutes to go in the first half have to love the resiliency of Aiden Charles in this game an interception on his first pass of the game they to bounce back from subsequent turnovers couple of deep drives seeing progression and what feels like confidence on almost every drive here even with his mistakes he he hasn't looked rattled right you know the the the moment hasn't looked too big for him he's looked confident through the successes through the mistakes and for an 18-year-old freshman really in his first start although he seen playing time that's what what keeps you confident for him to finish this strong he's recruited by the now Michigan State offensive coordinator Brian lingren running the offense doing it well today they opt to go to the ground so we'll see if they're content to run this out gain of two there Michigan State not huddling which at least potentially leaves the window that they're going to do something but now that it's ticking and now they are huddling they are they're comfortable going into the half with this lead a lot of good momentum down the tail end of that the first half for Michigan State like you said content to go into the locker room with his three lead what started with forcing a safety to make it two nothing looks like it's going to be 163 into the locker room had an explosive Run play in this half with KRON Lynch Adam 60 plus yards to the house they give it an eight Carter to run out the first half of play and one that they can be proud of let's go down to the sidelines with d coach what allowed your offense to settle in and open up for KRON Lynch Adams 63 yard touchdown run yeah was it is officially halftime with Michigan State up 16 [Music] may your with Will Levis may your dip be creamy and your quarterback dreamy oh hey may your game day be delicious half time in East Lancing Jonathan Smith debut as Michigan State's head coach up two nothing in in the second quarter Aiden CH bit up and down remember his first pass was an interception but he can beat you with his legs as well the run there puts Michigan State on top nine to nothing and then Kon Lynch Adams went over a thousand yards last year at UMass he is gone 63 yards for the score 16 to nothing Spartans it's 163 now after a late FAU field goal Dave Ashley and Marcel with you here as we break this one down Marcel a little uneven here from Aiden CH and that's to be expected his first start we're in a new system here for so many of the players at Michigan State but I'm interested your thoughts on what Brian Lindgren is doing to try to make his freshman quarterback or sophomore I guess comfortable yeah Dave what I'm seeing here I'm really impressed by the way that he is getting his quarterback in Rhythm early on he's given him some nice Rhythm throws nice and easy five eight yards past the line of scrimmage they're catching ball you see them rolling out changing launch point for his quarterback so he doesn't have to stand tall in the pocket the entire time and also they're trying to get the running game going and get that established so he's doing the right thing when they're calling plays from a offens offensive schematic perspective to try and get them going and get them in Rhythm you just see the kind of Dr Jack and Mr Hyde from this offense as a whole there's some miscues from the offensive line where he has some some free hitters coming at him little sporadic on a couple throws but you're going to go through those Growing Pains I think there's still extremely high upside for this kid being a quarterback moving forward that's not how you start it's how you finish he throws a pick in in his first play from scrimmage in his first start but he he settled in some the good news is especially when you look at Michigan State Joe rossy's defense it seems like they're they came out ready to play football's the Ultimate Team game right so how do you get your your your Young quarterback and Captain started get a safety for your first score take a little pressure off him he committed the turnover wasn't necessarily his fault thought it was a bad call questionable viiew but then at the same time the defense holds strong gets a stop three and out so the ball's back in the the offense's hands so this is going to be a complete team and they're going to have to continue to operate like that down the stretch of this game and the season yeah and even though Malik Spencer was disqualified for targeting they got two picks after that one of those turning into seven points much more to come here from our Big 10 Network Studios we still have more football tonight gentlemen settle in one game still ahead we'll take a look at Wisconsin's fickle second season in Madison getting ready to kick off it's the Badgers hosting Western Michigan you can catch that game on Fox at the top of the hour Wisconsin fans hoping he'll make the same JY he did between his first and second years at Cincinnati from four wins to 11 wins Improvement on both sides of the ball a bowl win and a number 19 ranking to end the season I think Badger fans would take that at Dave Ashley Marcel back with you Friday Night Football is back talking season is over gentlemen and I think one of the big question marks for Wisconsin in year 2 under Luke fickle is what is this offense going to look like Phil Longo's second season with Luke fickle and Tyler van djk obviously the biggest piece to that puzzle a three-year starter at Miami marceli the former ACC freshman of the year but this could be the fresh start and perhaps the system he needs absolutely you're coming in you're a veteran quarterback you have the experience let's see you jump into this new program and Lead this team that's what Wisconsin is looking for that's what Tyler van djk wants let's see if they can make this one happen offense left a lot to be desired last year they did have a lot of injury issues other side of the ball was probably a bit better and that guy was a huge part of the reason why Hunter Waller as productive as safety as you will find Marcel he just one of those old old school hard nose bloodier nose type of safeties and he plays the game the way it's supposed to be played I love watching this kid play watching him lead his defense and like I like we said earlier on in in in the pregame show when we mentioned Wisconsin this defense is going to carry this team into the next level 120 tackles I sure so most for Wisconsin DB in more than 30 years again it it felt like the defense was ahead of the offense much of last year I do think injuries had a lot to do with What will what will tell you tonight that they've made progress offensively like what do you need to see from Phil Longo's offense I think we're going to need to see composure and also the execution in the the short the short yardage and explosive plays they have to put it all together in order to be successful in this league and remember this was their lowest scoring offense in quite some time last year nine years so we'll see whether Wisconsin can crank it up a little bit Phil Longo comes with a wide open attack didn't quite materialize last year that play didn't materialize for FAU and dcoin D is the reason why the Georgia Tech transfer put Michigan State on the board they're up 163 every Jersey Mike sub is sliced and stacked right in front of you since 1956 you slice I snack I said slice and stack tomato tomato it's tomato freshly sliced since 1956 it's a Jersey Mike's thing find new ways to treat cancer that are both more potent and less toxic to patients her research focuses on precisely targeting cancer cells using Isotopes produced on msu's campus in a facility that is designed to be the world's most powerful heavy ion accelerator welcome back to e Lancing getting ready for this second half Spartans up 163 after the first two quarters of the Jonathan Smith era getting underway here at Michigan State time for our first half check-in sponsored by All State you're in good hands with all states you see the numbers here Spartans were able to climb over the hurdle that were those six penalties for 60 yards they had a couple of takeaways both teams had two takeaways but it was the Michigan State last interception from Martinez that led to some points and the big run from KRON Lynch Adams as well and I tell you what that was probably a loud locker room not because of the turnovers but because of those penalties speak penties and turnovers back first you have an incredible play by bugs and then you get the safety the first points Jonathan Smith era it's only R it defense monor Foster CS it up here when they're knocking on the door of the Red Zone and then here you have the leader of that DB room Angelo gross F was moving the ball he finally puts a stop do it and then nikai Martinez just tracking that ball like a hawk almost reaches P not quite but he sets up his quarterb right so been talking to Danny Rogers throughout the first half now second half she caught up with Coach Herman the number one thing coach Herman emphasized with me at the half is that his quarterback cam fer who he needs to be a Difference Maker in this game is just trying too hard coach Herman said it doesn't surprise him fer has a lot of here in the stands watching him and this environment is just making him do too many things he needs to simplify it from a defensive standpoint coach Herman said you take away that 63 yd touchdown run granted all the mistakes count but you take that one away and they are playing good enough ball to win this game similar overarching narrative to piggyback off what Danny said of getting accustomed to those that are surrounding you for both sides you have transfer QBs on both teams you see cam fer there has had six has had good moments coming over from Marshall learning his new teammates his team will get the ball to begin this second half Michigan State's defense started to really step up towards the tail end of that second quarter the vaunted linebacker group got involved DBS have stepped up Malik Spencer was disqualified due to targeting one of their starting safeties but nikai Martinez Ste it got an interception Angelo gross who has 35 career starts make it 36 tonight has an interception as well I said in the second quarter more impressive than those fantastic interceptions are the one-on-one tackles that these DBS have made FAU could have popped three or four runs if the last DB on the field was not able to get their man on the ground fantastic job All Around by this DB unit and credit to them they want to rewrite what happened last year they know they are better than what they put on tape a year ago and they are off to a hot start Ling under new defensive coordinator Joe Rossy who came over from Minnesota now back to the ground game Zu Moy being tracked out of bounds there over to the Spartan sideline gain of one and we get a flag that came in late you're going to see that horse collar area and you're going to see that him firmly out of bounds Dylan ha him just trying to get him on the ground but that right there is one of the most dangerous things you can do as a tackler now look he's off balance he's trying to chase him down he's not trying to hurt him but you see that compromising [Applause] position that compromising position that Zuber Moy was in that's how injuries happened thankfully he got up and walked off but an understandable penalty there seventh penalty up to 75 yards now in those penalties for Michigan State the horse collar is also one of the points of emphasis this year for officials so it advances Florida Atlantic forward and fer was excited for this stage he wants this sold out stage here at Spartan Stadium down a couple of scores to begin this second half fake the Run rarely have they gone to the in this game oneone was on the coverage and looks like he might get hit with the peny here as he was looking for Caleb K's one of the white outs that actually came over from Marshall with Cam Fant he already had that chemistry with Caleb K and you see this a lot with underthrown balls going to call defensive pass interference you see this a lot with underthrown footballs because the defensive back he's looking for it now the receiver sees it so the receiver is going to stop his momentum the DB who has his head turned is going to keep running and you're almost always going to run right into that wide receiver it's a very tough position to be in as a defensive back eight Spartan penalties now for nine yards definitely something they want to clean up moving forward tonight feels like hitting a reset button if you're a Michigan State fan this Florida Atlantic team they have a tough formidable Squad they won't give up CJ Campbell was in your impact players to begin this game picks up three there and you look at cornerback Ed Woods the transfer from Arizona State rotating in with Chance Record that's how you step up in the hole and make a tackle I I cannot speak highly enough of these DB's abilities to tackle Woods one of the 61 new faces on the Michigan State roster wasn't listed as a starter but he's got 12 starts over the last couple of years at Arizona State experienced guy was flying around in practi yester goes back to the air they try to set up some blocks they do have a first down pass is complete over on that far side has Jon plat this time a guy who they feel had a pretty big Camp gate of 10 it was a very interesting route because Omari Hayes the slot was essentially blocking the defensive back now he didn't have his hands on him but by running your route you kind of saw a flash of him there by running your route directly into a guy knowing that the man next to you is receiving the football you can kind of cheat a block there which is a great great call by Herman it's not illegal really the first time Brock FL Atlantics had some consistency through the air on a drive all of a sudden they're knocking on the door of the red zone are going to step up this is what he does best and he does scoot his into the Red Zone knocked out by Martinez with set up sh at the 15 little slow to get up there little bit of a limp which you never want to see but looks like he's going to shake it off this is why he's so dangerous he is a prolific Runner you're going to see him slide that that concrete wall is pretty dang close and that ground doesn't feel good either and you got a ladder there's just not a lot of space a double whammy that you do not want good to see get up after that get back into the play really tough kid banged up in the first half as well he's looking to the air Woods is all in his face though drop it down great play there from Ed Woods what a series right for woods look at him kind of bait fer here fer wants him to commit to one or the other Ed says no I'm athletic enough to do both I'm going to get my hands up while also staying in position to tackle fourth straight year opening on a Friday night for Michigan State little extra importance tonight trying to start the Jonathan Smith era off on the right foot good poet for he's not afraid to try to get out of it though there who else but number four unfortunately heing off the field but that doesn't take away from his effort on this play trying to bait time trying to take off Fant tackle yet again by ADB yet again by Ed Woods hopefully he's okay as he his way to I don't know if he'll go the med going so we keep an eye on Edwood status meanwhile they like to shake the keys around here in East Ling on third down L clock was winding down time out Michigan State first be a full media so the Spartans didn't like what they saw there reset we come back we know the Fel coming from Mexico and China is a threat here in Wisconsin it's why Tammy Baldwin is working to stop it and Tammy passed the bipartisan fend off fentanyl act that takes on the Mexican cartels and the fentanyl coming from China and Tammy Baldwin voted 32 times to strengthen our border 32 times to increase border patrols and Technology to keep on the Big 10 Network and thex sports at topown coming back to Elite eight that should be good meanwhile back here in East Ling Jonathan Smith watching his defense get ready for what feels like a huge third and 11 in this game has not out a QB at all this evening if they have it in the book now may the timean has scrambled multiple times on third down he getss abely in the back [Applause] field in N if you go back to the time why they had to call it was because Ken tally was struggling on where to line up so Jonathan Smith called the timeout I'm sure he's glad he did cuz tally knew exactly where to line up this time around and he gets the fer so this [Music] 44 and Spartan cting no he where not go for Carter Davis stays out it doesn't get that that hook in there that the right looking for and rock it's interesting because they used Suarez earlier he made that field goal then they bring in Carter Davis he misses it they do use two field goal kicker doesn't work out that time and now Michigan State's offense can come back out and set up after the defense gives up no points on the longest drive of the day for FL and it you're feeling really good right now after that he drop it down in and out of the hands rare drop from Nate Carter who might have looked up a little too soon there he definitely felt a a Sandy FAU Jersey coming toward him and you're going to see right there that's exactly what it was Jason he saw a big number five headed toward him and didn't keep his eyes on it I would love to see Nick camore utilized as a receiver but unfortunately drops like that aren going to help that is actually the color of the Jersey by the way yes yes that was not a beach joke no no it was a be joke at all the drop it off back to the corner got hit hard by sand this time coming up to make the play isson ambush in the sand Jersey the leader of their defense who wears the Green Dot again reminding you on the communication for Coach to player this season that communication shuts off at 15 seconds remaining on the plate clock they can radio it into the player you see the green down on the back of Jackson ambush's helmet ifies that he is the player who has the Green Dot no other player can wear that on the field from Florida Atlantic side Michigan State it's Aiden Charles wearing it getting that in his offensive coordinator Brian L is up in the booth now Carter comes in motion here and get some flags flying [Applause] and the third and long is creeping up on Third and impossible due to another pnap penalty again this is what comes with week one coaches don't want to make excuses for it but it is expected but as we sit here now with n penalties five of nine have gone for 15 or more three personal fouls yeah Under Pressure using his legs to improvise and extend the in traffic got to get a lot of this thoughs into some traic and got hit the effort the compen of the 18yearold on display on that play did pick up 13 with his legs but the pting unit is going to come out and you see a flash of the athleticism here he's not able to find a receiver to to break free and takes a big old hit there but he's able to pop back up trying to direct traffic and that's what I'm looking for can the young 18y old direct traffic on the move and he's doing it it just didn't work that time Mari Hayes back to return this punt Eckley with the big leg he's backing up hay wow backed him all the way up to the 10 hay will scoot out of the initial traffic then works his way up the sideline here is Hayes to the 40 flag behind the got up to the 48 let's see what this flag is for Way Way Back at the 19 yd line it would be a long return here fantastic return if it stands if it does stand after the kick of 61 Ryan Eckley on The Tackle by the way the last lineup defense return number foul first so illegal Block in the back negates what would have been a 34 yd return out to the 48 instead that's going to go back because of that right there Trapper beefs Energy emergency old Trav what's your Reef we want it all we want our dog to fetch it drop it and drop it it we want to fix it ourselves and actually fix it we want to order the market price Lobster and know today well back that is right around where the the Spartan walks took place earlier today the first Spartan walk for new head coach Jonathan Smith in Spartan Stadium where his team leads 163 here in this third quarter good to see Ed Woods back out there for Michigan State just saw him in the frame there he got dinged up on the last series made some good plays Four in the green and white go to the ground and Jordan Turner got there first on the contact for Michigan State his family here today one of their captains they call him JT because they've also got Jordan Hall special room to say the least you've been harping on it you'll hear people harp on it all season long this is as as deep of a linebacker room as you're going to find across the entire confidence B will roll out pressure in his face it was Anthony Jones a transfer from Indiana who got up there it's of course what'll be third and 11 here for an offense that isn't really designed to be backed up of it own like this and look it's woods again Ed Woods seems to be nursing yeah and you just hope that it's not developing into something serious if it wasn't before if they use one for seven on third down to they pressure got there quick it was tally who had the sack on the last drive that got in the face of fer and a quick series for the AL Ken tally back to back series with Incredible efforts that's not going to be a sack or anything but he got his hands up and you better believe Camp Baner was not able to deliver a solid football because he has a big number 11 I mean how many times has fer lost his helmet now Brock maturi Foster as Florida Atlantic is going to boot this out of their own end zone is is lining up at his own 45 you could be looking at possibly some really good field position here he is going to run up in fair catch this right up near the 50 will mark it at the 47 I'm your football obsessed best man and I think you having your big day during the big game is the worst are you kidding me sponsored by Ace harder I feel like Ace hardw should be sponsoring these guys at the top of the student section here wonder what this conversations about I hope that they don't even know each other I hope they just like hey you dressed up for the games too I did too how you like a school first week yeah I was math a couple of days ago sight sight going well we have two over this long weekend we should just stay dressed like this all weekend well one thing Michigan State they want to clean up is the penalties in this game as they go up the middle of Nate Carter got met pretty quickly there interior that fa defense Williams came [Music] up there's definitely been an emphasis on hitting those a gaps that massive run by Kon Lynch Adams was in that a gap but I would love to see a little more of the outside Zone I feel that Nate Carter just needs to get going needs to some momentum the defensive line for fa has certainly made some corrections down there on the interior let let let Carter flash him speed this time they're going to use child's leg trying to beat the Freshman Herd on the outside snuck inside the 50 that was young player on young player out there on the edge Charles trying to shake CJ herd gain of five sets up third and manageable here in plus territory the sea snake they call CJ herd because you see those dreads flying just like corus Valyrian little house of dragon reference for those who watch and you can see why CJ her highly T of recruit 50 offers including Michigan State wa clock winding down here third and five they op to run it trusting Carter with getting this first down we'll see where they mark it it's going to be close he looks like the chains should be moving where the officials are and they will that's what I want to see I I I want to see Carter able to get full speed by the time he gets theine ofage yes he he has great vision and great feet go back to those outside zones because once he gets moving that Vision really shines and he he can become that despite the offensive struggles for Michigan State a season to go carter still at nearly 800 yards on the ground he returns the most rushing yards from that team little trickery here he flip it out first time we've seen some deception saw a little bit of that in practice yesterday good chunk there and in talking to offensive coordinator Brian Ling Jason it certainly sounded like they were very excited about Jon Glover and his potential not just as a receiver but as a ball carrier here following his tight ends and there's Tanner Miller of course out there leading the way as well but I I expect big things out of out of number four this year lover Florida native started four games last year was ATT tracked guy in high school they felt like he had an awesome Camp really excited for his season flip it out opposite way this time with Carter gets a block from this newly constructed offensive line ston R got out there one of the the backup tackles gain of eight he is so Nimble on his feet watch this hurdle at the end how subtle it is how effortless it is that is a heck of an effort by CJ Herd on the tackle you would never expect a running back to be able to hurdle you like that with that kind of angle and that kind of position somewhat reminiscent maybe of Le'Veon Bell he us that back in the day I can Spartan fans a flashback right if you're going there I'll meet you yes Sirles got that ball away in time and byah Johson wither catches that's of 22 you ask why a is one of the most sought after quarterbacks in the portal it's because of fro like this not even really able to set his feet and plant that throw but he dropped that football exactly where it needed to be big play from Johnson on the receiving ends number two transfer portal QB in the green and white that kind of throw while taking a hit while Landing back phenomenal they've got Lynch Adams in at running back he already has one touchdown today get swung down there keep eyes on tight end Jack Belling as well only one reception here today but last year how do you lead the country and receiving touchdowns by a tight end it's the red zone that's where Oregon State thrives that's where Michigan State wants to thrive a great call they go back to Nate Carter this time flip flopping the running backs the tight end they had on that play had both Bing and Michael munis in the block on that right side all of a sudden third and goal after trying to stuff it in with the Run game what are you looking for here I'm looking for VY I'm looking for the guy who was in an offense last year that had a 78.6 touchdown percentage in the Red Zone not points touchdown percentage and he was a huge part of he's standing up as a wide receiver I hope FAU knows where he is that was at Oregon State Ellen came over from or state with with head coach Jonathan Smith and nowles is looking to the is intercepted is intercepted and head back the other for a big return from Philip Dunham the former Indiana who cuts it back well inside of Spartan territory second Red Zone turnover of the day a return of 58 for Dunham you talk about being Philip Dunham spending so much time at he's been in this Stadium he is familiar he jumps that rout he sniffs it the entire way so instinctual was so instinctual as a hooer and here goes back home to Florida but the play making came with him he's a guy who you thought coming in can maybe calm down this defense because he's been in this Stadium as a former played in Big 10 atmospheres ke from a leadership standpoint and Philip Dunham comes up with the big pick with three minutes to go you mentioned earlier you can't keep GL Atlantics hopes alive well Philip Dunham just really injected some hope and energy back into this fa team very Mo bounced off a tackle got to the outside wrapped up by K Hall gain of four there so now Florida Atlantic they didn't capitalize last time they got into the of 50 missed a field goal they're back at it though in Michigan State territory fer keeps his carries slid down again that kind of late slide you've seen it earlier Angelo gross who had an interception for Michigan state with the contact there Angelo gross thankfully stayed high on his tackle attempt but this is that slide that was just a pain in their side for that entire first qu I me that is very for on third down florid Atlantic looking f are improvised and he's ultimately brought down the flag came flying in late and there was a slight grab of the face mask at the tail end you wonder if that was where it was but when was he down as well and you have F grabing his knee it looks like he's he's walking it off but personal foul Defense number again we're going to take a look at this and I think a by prodct of when he goes down it's like that rabbit you got long arms of course but it's so tough there's a grab definitely there's grab and it's also tough to win games when you have four personal fouls now obviously once you get your hand in that face mask that flag is going to go 10 times out of 10 but to your point when you slide that late you get yourself in compromising spots and as long as he remains Health can playing it's an advantage but at what point is it self ared I mean M with run I'm right with you there where it's working it's an advantage for Florida Atlantic that he's doing that because you're catching the Spartans need to be disciplined right in terms of plays just like that you can't have that many the the disadvantage for the Spartans is there's no drill that you run throughout camp where hey if we're playing a quarterback who's athletic enough to slide extremely late how are we going to tackle you don't cover that they're just going off of instinct and again it's working at his Advantage but I'm I for him being such a great athlete I'm nervous that if he can't do an entire season of this and remain healthy FL Atlantic try to put this in the end zone to pull within a score and they're going to work it with some blocks on that left side Ro made the tackle big possession here for Florida Atlantic creeping inside of the final minute of this third quarter B just working his way through all of these hits today showing some fortitude showing his toughness his resilience a great athlete as you said you you go back to last year at Marshall against NC State he had the ball more than 70 times over 50 pass attempts 20 Rush attempts so yes he looks gassed but if he has to put this team on his back he's done it before towi sides intended for his tight end Zeke Mo but incomplete holiday was out there on the coverage brings up now a decision here on fourth and one with 11 seconds to go offense appears to be staying out there absolutely even if you kick a field goal it's still a two possession game you don't know how often how many opportunities you're going to get to be on here I mean there's no doubt we're going [Applause] for to Pullin one score jat on the receiving end and a big play for fa off that int it is a one possession game seven plays 40 yards they go and you're going to see miscommunication on the back end watch both DBS go to the flat leaving a wide open J sha plat when you are in man coverage you have to communicate especially in the red zone are we switching or are we sticking if my guy crosses in front of you are you taking him and am I taking your guy or are we staying and unfortunately miscommunication important extra point for Suarez and he does make it a Sixpoint game so it's a new ball game in East Lancing a one possession battle nearing the fourth quarter do you have a Walt Disney World moment yeah I do I've got something let me pull it up here let me see if I can find it I took selfies with my daughter on my shoulders and we were watching the fireworks show I would always see these Dad if you guys are new make sure hit the Subscribe button and turn on notifications I do stream a lot of the games for incredibly hard and he instilled a very strong work ethic in me and when I think about Trailblazers and I think about my time at Michigan State I looked around I saw lots of people working incredibly hard to really Master their skills that's something that I tried to carry throughout my career no matter what job I was doing I tried to do it with excellence and integrity if I can help impart my knowledge from the experiences that I've had to help people grow and develop that's an important aspect of what we do as Leaders the best days at Home Depot were the days that I'm in the stores in distribution centers in call centers with our Frontline Associates list listening to to what they think and what they need those are the best days as a CEO I'm Craig maner former CEO of the Home Depot and a Michigan State graduate tomorrow six more games come your way as Iowa Purdue Northwestern Indiana Oregon and Washington are in action on Big 10 Network in the Fox Sports app go to btn.com gamefinder for channel locations in your area going lat of the night for the Washington and we were state there so Florida Atlantic right back into this one new game and this is what you say when you say you cannot let a team stick around because belief starts to grow and barring any kind of return here you go into the fourth quarter and if you're fa you say guys we we we believe we should be up in this game and here we are hanging around in the fourth quarter why not just go do this and after that extra point a touchdown theoretically another one and an extra point puts you in front so I mean wow it's been the turnovers in this matchup this all started because of a Philip Dunham interception and then it leads to this are we switching or are we sticking right now you have two DBS with eyes right there who does that leave open number three you have to communicate that all throughout the week if my guy crosses under yours am I taking him and you take my guy or are we staying where we are fantastic play call by FAU but you got to communicate that likely the final play of the third quarter we go into a fourth quarter that could have some drama on this Friday night at Spartan [Music] Stadium has a Target open find it's not Foster who puts his foot in the ground and gets out past the 40 for a Michigan State first down in gain of 16 to close out the third quarter on the edge of our Stadium packs and they've got a fun game to watch Michigan State offense takes [Music] over second play of this series and moments ago Danny caught up with Flor Atlantic head coach Tom Herman you told me your quarterback cam fer needs to be a Difference Maker what did he show you on that fourth and one touchdown pass well a lot of toughness you know he's getting banged around out there pretty good but uh you know they brought the house on us and he did a great job hanging in there and delivering it as poorly as we played on that side of the ball to be within one touchdown in the fourth quarter uh we're going to find out how much fight we got left there was a jump this should be a free play they lob it up to Glover and now we'll get the verdicts May throw some socks down there if we're having laundry day Five Flags on the field take your pick definitely some movement pre- snap likely a pass interference as well tons to discuss lots of walks out the field today today for referee Brian Banks to make calls he's going to give us another one here there are two fouls on the play offside Defense number 97 that penal is dein pass interference Defense number 11 15 from the prev spot that moves the chains forward into plus territory for the Spartans Devonte Davis with the early movement bugs Brown who's had a phenomenal game outside of of that penalty a play [Music] ago seen a lot of this tonight a fake and then a throw down field out of bounds an incomplete one in Belling I know you want to see get inv so again Danny caught up with tomman his group mentions to the end this game with some of the mistakes they've made they'll take it and this is a team that's experienced in Big 10 atmospher they played at Illinois last year they only lost by six in that game 2317 it kind of felt like they almost deserved to win that one but didn't come out with the victory their last one over a power five team was in 2007 against Minnesota again another big 10 opponent but lost by six Illinois last year down six today and KRON Lynch Adams continues to bounce and break off tackles brought down by bugs brown but not after a big gain of 10 and Lynch Adams pretty hyped up Lynch Adams has got the juice right now and when you have a center like Tanner Miller watch how he sets the tone here clear him out now I'm going to clear him out Valencia Viking yes I am biased that's my high school could not be prouder of Tanner Miller so Cowboys taking their talent to e l the of the legendary Larry Mir off right back to lych moment lch and can feel it oozing out of him look how fired up he is his fists are still clenched Ln feed him feed him feed him look at this run Lynch Adams looking like Lightning McQueen Kon saying kachow carries 99 y near the mark now adjust at the line for right back to the [Music] [Applause] want to start this off of identity with the ground and have balance off of it I love the look in his eyes right now I love how fired up he is I love how physical he can be but also a little finesse this is more of a finesse run look how patient he is on the sideline saying yeah I'm not going to score I'm just going to tiptoe my way okay now it's time to be physical again and get some extra yards love how 15 is toen the rck canish off in the red zaching St coming over from as lynchs in the Red Zone you'd like to be better than you've been today the two turnovers have hurt last time they were down there the interception from former Indiana hoer Philip Dunham took it back the other way then set up some points for the owl that pulled them within six and in the past two seasons Michigan State's offense averaged just over four points per Red Zone trip one of one of the worst and they're looking to rectify that now empty back field for haven't seen a lot of that fost sco that up he looks like he did nice adjustment there from monri Foster fantastic Hands by Foster their offense remaining on the field nice adjustment there from mour Foster fantastic hand by Foster there offense remaining on the field bringing on some tight ends but Jason they're not bringing on a kicker now they're bringing in Michael theunis beef there along with fet 67 249 they converted to the last fourth down and munis is 65 258 getting some weight in especially on the left side of the o line there fourth and a big fourth and one here oh Lynch Adams got met by the Florida Atlantic dline what a job to step up in a clutched moment and the Spartans continue to struggle in the Red Zone Chris Jones kind of L the way over there Florida Atlanta steps up back up what a play ah yes unlet 88 can save you big at the pp if you guys are new make sure to subscribe and turn on notifications I do stream a lot of the college football games every week also if you want pit 7:30 Pacific Time 10:30 Eastern Time volleyball start tonight after football out west so now reset things after the fourth and one incredibly clutch stop for this FL Atlanta Michigan state has struggled in the Red Zone offensively tonight b a little fake let's check in with Danny fa has a goat receiver on the sidelines in terms of their director player engagement it's Chris Carter the first consens consensus All-American wide receiver for the Ohio State Buckeyes an eight Time pro bowler I caught up with him before the game as he's in this new role he says he wakes up every day and is's able to mold these young guys lives I asked are you having fun he took a nice long pause he said this is the most rewarding job I'll ever have in my entire life and it's a full-time job he's in the office every day at practice and on these Road games and he is such a special Mentor for all of these young men at fa thanks Dy really cool stuff an open door policy is is his Mantra players can walk in any moment that they want big third and here that ISE first and more to Amari Hayes they continue to get different guys involved there is a flag out there the flag is on the Michigan State sideline whereas all the action was on the opposite side so it's likely something sideline sideline warning Michigan State this is their first sideline warning gain of 28 yards on that last play and you see Cal Halliday not seeing wide receiver sneaking behind him that's Amari Hayes who has had himself a very good second another Florida native on this roster up near Midfield you wonder about the legs and tiredness of defenses as well in the second half of games absolutely you're the last position you want to be in in games like this is when you have the lead you're at home yet all the momentum is with the visiting team it's a scary place to be in but this this defense is going to have to find a way to figure it out that last stop felt Monumental yes for Florida Atlanta yes and you mentioned their hope all night they have injected some hope and life back into this sideline down just six here benter will keep it running away inside the 50 he goes got to scoot past ble there and picks up another FAU first down gain of 10 a fantastic run here by fer able to beat the defensive van and then cut up field before Angelo gross can really get a solid hit on you meaning you get to fall forward for that first spart made some subss get some fresh legs out there Johnson the catch this time against liing through T mentioned how good the open field tackling was for Michigan State in the first half going to become even more bigger now in this fourth quarter at a gain of five there backto back plays now the defensive back tackling for Michigan state has has really harmed them and it's been their strength up to this point you talk about the exhaustion and fau's offense is kind of onedimensional but if you can't tackle doesn't matter it's almost like the skill set of trying to wear you down has now started to do that and become a positive in the second half looking for George Johnson again Charles brenley on the coverage really excited to have him back this year brings up a big third and five you can't point to any of these DBS that are one-onone battles all of the significant gains for FAU have come from busted coverages or or penalties or just guys straight up in the wrong position but again third and five camer and his legs are maybe the moster some motion to work with they give it to Mo he did not get there not enough for the first down now decision time four down territory as they fa Subs out a wide receiver and Subs on a tight end ask him what range do you feel comfortable with field goal they said maybe 51 it wasn't as as michig st's comfort so they're going to go for it here why not that was in motion turn Excell [Applause] this Kia Turbo Hybrid is built for all the things you've yet to do like taking a long drive just to throw a monster tailgate party at an away State offense comes back out up six they would love to extend the lead to two possessions issue in trying to do that in the Red Zone you've got two turnovers an interception and a fumble down there absolutely brutal they're moving the ball fine it's they just can't play mistake free right now back to Nate Carter some good starting field position here with 648 to go in this fourth quarter remember we have the new two-minute timeout this year in college football Michigan state has two timeouts but the clock will also stop and you have that timeout at the two minute Florida Atlantic with all three of their timeouts did you like the Florida Atlantic decision to go for it I did I absolutely did the fact is they have nothing to lose they belong here they are more than capable of winning this game you could argue they should be up by now yeah so yes keep that pedal to the metal Tom Herman and his staff Not Afraid whatsoever on the mo anding is so good at those delayed releases especially with how good the offensive line is at making pass look like run Aiden child really just needs to plant that foot and drive that ball and not throw it off his back foot there was a guy in his face but he had time to deliver that ball where where it needed to be neither team has been great up third down today three for 11 are the Spartans see what they can cook up here big play for the FAU defense Char wants it all downfield incomplete looking for monor foster DayDay Hill the lock down quarter for FAU in on the coverage that time they get the stop they're looking for still 559 to go in this football game too and this one just sailed I if if I were to guess it is the fact that the cornerbacks for fa are doing such a good job at the line of scrimmage data Hill and bugs Brown fantastic Corners Aiden Childs has not adjusted to where he normally puts that fade ball it's going to be a little shorter because those cornerbacks are press every play and they're in his receiver's face Amari Hayes back to return the boing punt from eeky almost a little zoooom in there so we'll come back FL Atlantic offense will take the stage we see the promises you make doing more than your fair share working twice as hard saving lives changing lives and your life's work deserves nothing less than a lifetime guarantee you made a promise so did we Dia's promise of a guaranteed retirement paycheck for life it's a promise that pays off on a tense fansville by Dr Pepper holy smoke State one and the fans are going wild Deputy Urus quick call for Backup backup yes Deputy Quinn Urus we don't need any backup I got this call backup I'm sorry did you say you wanted a Dr peper is a backup look we don't need any backup even if he has great hair and famous relatives I think we're talking about two different things here college football it's a pepper thing you know I the playoff without any backup I get it the NF it all kicks off with Aug dou head first the Russell Wilson era Begins for the Steelers against the Falcons Tom against Watson and the Browns it all kicks off September Fox home of Super Bowl 59 of ours then count to kickoff the you need before the action begins on paper they are wonderful they're going to do all the little things it takes to win it all starts at 10: a.m. eastern 7 Pacific this could be fun Saturdays only on the Big 10 Network coming up after the game Big 10 live football post game Show sponsored by stayed Farm be all caught up in everything around the Big 10 yesterday tonight looking at tomorrow There's Tom Herman Flor Atlantic head coach former Ohio State offensive coordinator during the national title year in 2014 you see the one and 10 versus Big 10 opponents in program history last wi coming in 07 against Minnesota when Tom Herman was at Houston he was no stranger to knocking off Big Time programs he was six and0 at the time when Houston was in the American Conference against Power five opponent so has had his fair share of upset wins as a head coach and he's in search of another on a big stage here in East laning tonight as Michigan State tries to ring in the Jonathan Smith era on a high note in front of this home crowd there is coach Smith 538 to go on the ticking clock of this fourth quarter and what has turned out to be a really enthralling second thanks to kind of a blend of turnovers Red Zone errors for both teams FL Atlantics on a drive here where they're trying to take the lead bener dangerous Crossing route it is caught though by Hayes it was Martinez who was flying in though tried to jump that route he sniffed it early fer got it there I mean if he was a millisecond later yeah that would have been intercepted great job by Martinez to sniff it out but it just wasn't good enough and Martinez already with one interception today back to the ground Florida Atlanta goes on First and 10 after the gain of 10 on the last catch one thing that's benefiting Michigan state is how deep all the rotations are every opportunity they get they bring on three new defensive linemen we spoken at length about that linebacker room how many guys can play even on the back end at the DBS Angelo gross is now in the game with his brother on the other side of the field with Avon Maverick Hansen vanum just so muchal Hall up there see if they bring it holid backs up Baner will throw clean pocket for berer Too Tall oh he had a Target as well in Marlin Johnson but too tall for a pretty tall receiver at 6'4 you're going to see Angelo gross on coverage and he runs into him and you could have thrown a flag there DPI but I guess he didn't really impede Marin Johnson's progress but that's why Marin was so wide open F just not able to get that ball down to be catchable fan watching that replay you're taking an exhale because that could have been a very big Play You could argue it should have been instead it's third and eight B pressure off the edge gross got there but couldn't bring him down now gross gets back up but berer gets it away was this caught in bounds found Dom Henry and where do they mark it as well is the next question mark he looks like they are going to call it a catch inbounds it will be short y short after a gain of seven incredible effort there by fer to escape from Angelo gross who had a fantastic BL careful around those feet after the release but the fact remains fourth and short off on the field one for two on fourth down so far for fa maybe the biggest snap of the game so [Applause] far V roll designed to play to that side he talked about his legs slides down Turner came in and the for the second time today on that slide Malik Spencer was Eed earlier in the game forting and now they'll look at Turner's last hit it's now that that forearm shiver gets involved for for those people wondering no he's not leading with the crown of his helmet but that forearm shiver making contact with the helmet is still considered contact to the helmet just want to clear that up in case that affects what the penalty ends up being no contact to the helmet whether it's your crown whether it's your forearm it's it's all legal they two fouls on the play personal foul late hit with number seven defense [Applause] theou thei targeting is on further review so you heard there that the targeting call is under review and the unsportsman like conduct as well to tack on so you're going to see Jordan Turner right there again it's it's that shoulder forearm shiver obviously there is contact to the helmet you you see the helmet go flying but it that affects the targeting aspect of it of course Jonathan Smith is incredibly upset I mean I I've lost count of personal fouls Jason the decisions being made in Roseman at the new Big 10 replay Center and we are going to bring in Mike PR our rules analyst here to get his thoughts I'm curious Mike your thoughts on when he becomes defenseless here because it's something we talked about on that first targeting call in Malik Spencer earlier in the game yeah listen the whole defenseless thing is is he's given himself up if he's going feet first then he is considered defenseless the plays over even though he's not on the ground the question is does he get the head or neck area yes there's the forearm contact but what they're going to have to find out in that wonderful system that that the replay Center they have in Rosemont they just have to verify for this to be targeting there needs to be contact to the head or neck area so that forum's going what they're going to look at the main thing is also here is that the defender threw his helmet after he made the uh the targeting foul or made the hit so that's what they called and that will be penalized also so there's either going to be 15 yards of penalty here or there's going to be 30 yards of penalty based on the fact if they can look at video like this and we see that there is the Forum coming out but is that shoulder as the helmet come off when he's hitting the ground that's what they have to look at it's not real clear from these shots thank you Mike great breakdown there fantastic explanation so now I see the forearm after seeing those replays I see it hit the shoulder pad but we'll see after review there is no Target on the play however number one started at 41 yd line the ball is dead where he gets himself up at the 41 that is of the line the game as a result we have a turn [Applause] onou michig St all right so what an explanation a lot of paperwork to sort through there no targeting on Jordan Turner a smile there and he was short of the line to gain on thatth down will take over but the unsportsman like conductor throwing the helmet off will still be implemented so at the end of the day it's a win if your Michigan State and a very very interesting series of events here when it has come to something the Michigan State staff told us going into the G they worried about when watching on film and particularly the timing of when he slides and that is played out today now in the biggest stages of this gamee Ross what was at risk in in tackling B and unfortunately it's come to fruition will it end up being the determining factor in this game or not we have about three and a half minutes to decide but for those who didn't see Jordan Turner got up and chucked his helmet and that's what's going to keep Jonathan Smith upset targeting not targeting forget all that Jonathan Smith is a disciplined guy run a disciplin program he's going to say you better keep your helmet on next time regardless of what the call is see the defensive coordinator Joe Rossi up there entirely new staff for Michigan State some whistles before this next series gets underway here reminder on that two-minute timeout it's coming up Florida Atlantic still has all three of their timeouts 11 penalties 125 yards for Michigan State today something Jonathan Smith will want to clean up next week against Maryland when they play their first conference game of the season very early on in this campaign 11 for 125 is he going to cut it almost half of those being personal fouls is also not going to cut it been a f up dramatic night first career start for Aiden childes 327 to go and still a lot of work before you can think about college B next week and Maryland Florida Atlantic's looking to get a stop here and they still have three timeouts in the time out so you got some work to do right now what are your thoughts on what the Michigan State offense should do on this series I'm looking at number 15 KRON Lynch Adams he has been the most successful offensive player he's he's the third transfer running back for Michigan State to have 100 yards in his debut Nate Carter had it here it Go Jaylen burer had it in the past as well you ride the hot hand that's what coach lindr told us he was going to do you lead up some clock and Lynch Adams can get some yards for you as well Lynch Adams with nine carries 101 yard [Applause] today first play they're trying to eat up clock and keep this drive going but a really good tackle out of the Edge by the leader of that Fu defense Jackson Ambush on Nate Carter this is the first of the half 30 seconds l so fa Burns one of those timeouts and we will step aside for a quick 30 seconds [Music] clock what are you doing oh we did our home insurance ourselves but don't feel protected so you're building your own American Family Insurance roof line yeah you know life's better when you're protected under American family's roof if you guys are new make sure to subscribe also if you want tips are appreciated even it's just $1 or $5 it is pinned in the comments go check it out tips are appreciated thank you and I hope you're enjoying the game who said go to the ground feed the hot hands Atlantic wants the Quick Stop TRS will fake it they want the pass game off the Run game in this offense throw behind Glover so now third and eight and the clock stops at 316 very close coverage you see there Day Hill just blanketing Jon Glover and child tries to lead lover behind to sit down but pass just wasn't where it needed to be now we sit on Third and eight what they stop clock they said they're remaining aggressive and I like that but this is the downside of it just three for 12 on third down today this the biggest of the day Tri of good protection got it away a strong throw incomplete Glover and bugs Brown was on the coverage with a great play there and it's going to give the fa offense the ball back with three minutes 11 seconds two timeouts and the two-minute timeout and you're going to see bugs Brown all over Jon Glover I like the no call there that is solid cornerback play what a game he has had kicking in the door Spartan Stadium sixth punt for e Amari Hayes is back to return arching Punt and they're caught by Hayes don't forget we got volleyball later tonight still coming up Oregon and pit late night volleyball action 10:30 p.m. eastern time 7:30 Pacific out west match up following what's been a really good gameing now the biggest defensive series of the coming up for Michigan State going back to volleyball I'm excited to see where a very good program in Oregon lands amongst the rest of the Big 10 which always has a tremendous amount of representation in that that 16 be fun to watch their Journey this year back to back Elite oron and the Ducks so 305 to go fer one of their captains for Florida Atlantic new QB transferred from Marshall one at this stage one at this setting sold out Friday night crowd one of the biggest drives of his young career with his team down six his legs will be a key part of it but he gets brought down quickly interior of the defensive line was ready jayen Thompson was in there with deim doubts L of one and you're going to see number n just slowly collaps that pocket and once he gets that arm on you you are going down he puts that 250 lounds of weight fake it and the throw looked like communication just wasn't there so all of a sudden very quickly you got third and 12 coming up here with 236 to go f was expecting milon Tucker to sit down he kept running that slot fade which is why there is nobody there and a big third down coming up is going to let him third escapes but to the sideline and did not get nearly enough first down so now you go to fourth down and do they bring out the Ping unit here it would be kind of dicey you got this twoin timeout coming up and you got two timeouts left but I think it's offense staying out here it certainly looks that way I I I wouldn't be against them utilizing the two-minute timeout with the punt and everything but maybe they're just going to think it over and we we'll see who who they bring out here in a couple minutes they'll think it over we're seeing new strategy with this two-minute timeout we'll be right back in he gling time whoa Nelly iPhone 15 with tons of storage I really want one yo You've Won 14 times on the lpj tour since when is one enough for you that is true get your head out of the sand trap switch to T-Mobile and get four iPhone 15s on them and four lines for just 25 bucks a line and you can save on every plan versus the other big guys swing big at their nugs even better anything it's for a whole new way to nug gota be Wendy's Dave Ron Marcel ree Ashley Adamson G to get you back out to East Lancing offense has been struggling defense has been bailing the Spartans out right now we're seeing a veteran defensive group step up to the pl and get their team TR to will their team to a victory tonight need one more big stop here Ashley yeah we got a big game coming up after the football game it's volleyball gentlemen I know Marcel is a big volleyball fan top 10 showdown in Eugene between Oregon and Pittsburgh that's coming up after football but it's going to be a good finish Jason Brock back to you back here in East Lancing got a fun finish coming up here you see some of the numbers by quarter You' said to me it kind of feels like this fourth quarter has been a game in its own right it certainly has it it it has been a journey and it's tough to how much you can chalk it up to week one Kinks and Jitters and how much of it just shooting yourself in the foot which both teams have done both teams can have an argument for being up multiple possessions right now let's see who wants him moreth and for Florida Atlant huge play here Mak the biggest of the game Ben over the middle and that is caught hold in ha with thebig in half and that was a long developing dig route so let's start with the offensive line who held a clean pocket and now the uptempo game right back to Hay smartly gets out of bounds we're inside of the final two minutes now we're on a first down clock stops and the chains are being reset Smart play there from ha toot out of bounds clock stopping at a minute 49 down so you get a six for a touchdown would be your goal if your Florida Atlantic then the extra point gives you the lead F to go until they get there second and seven Turner and a time FL at be right [Music] back how's the succession plan going smooth thanks to you Dad ran a pretty tight ship and taught us to do the same best thing he did was bring Old National on board I'm just glad I could be there for your dad and now for you guys there is so much I want to ask him right now but I know that's not possible if you guys are new make sure to subscribe we're close to 5,000 subscribers also tips are appreciated these streams are for free any tips are appreciated even if it's just $1 or5 thank you enjoy the game W up here in East Lancing 141 to go 101 seconds left in this game third and 15 and a big one for V K trying to track him down directing traffic and they're going to have another fourth down coming up to try to ex Angel [Music] inter little flop there gamesmanship if you will uh line judge not falling for it one bit I respect the attempt I guess third and final Florida Atlantic takes their third and final timeout so here's your ball game absolutely and fer getting his hand ined now it looks like it's his right hand he is a lefty but he's clearly in some kind of pain as that that hand is switching a little bit kind of a scary sight which means I wonder if he will even be on the field for this potentially final play for for FAU Tyreek Starks who had one snap earlier in this game when Pan's helmet came off is the backup but it clearly looks like fer wants to stay in there so you see Charlie fry offensive coordinator in the Huddle there for the owls fourth eight was the last fourth down they converted it's backed up now to Fourth and 13 pretty much for the game here keep your eyes on he he's a lefty but he still has to catch that snap and if that right hand is as bad as it looked that could be a factor here steps up green jerse in his face and he is dragged down got that off but it's t who was big earlier in this one showcasing the of the Mig state line to come up big and effectively oneing turn and you see thefort that is in after that how much he must have been hurting going into this snap cannot even imagine but Kent Aly this linebacker room this defensive line room whenever a play needed to be made that defensive front seven team on their back and the offense on their back and brought this one home I do want to give a tip of the cap 2 Camp fer you mentioned it and I I can't imagine how much pain he is in took some devastating blows as helmet flew off God six or seven times fought till the end and truly just hope that that hand is not something that will affect him in future games reminder if you want to find Oregon pit volleyball you can have that on the Fox Sports app will rejoin that right after we wrap up here you see Jonathan Smith so ringing in the New Era under his leadership this isn't his first time in Spartan Stadium Jonathan Smith as you see his quarterback that followed him from Oregon State fittingly taken the knee he was here as the quarterback coach for Boise State in 2012 and he said he wants to restore it to where it was you've seen roseb wins you've seen Big 10 champion games they made the 14 playoff he wants it to get back to there a lot of work to be done until then but this start is one that he'll be proud of with his team after the game in terms of how they closed it out it took four years at Oregon State before he was able to get his first win and bu bid regardless of what happened tonight I'm telling you that will happen in half the time here in East LAN 1610 going to be the final he get the final handshake there for Jonathan Smith and Tom Herman final score for awesome crew Brock phenomenal job Danny Rogers down on the sideline 1610 Michigan State going to wrap this up improve to 12 and0 in Friday night openers mentioned
