they subtracted you know their best corner we added one of the better defensive tackles of the league you know what I mean and it's like I just think that that's that's that's big time you know what I mean when it's when you're you're not that far from each other at the end of last year with where where we ended up I think that it's it was close obviously they were I think they were better because obviously playoffs they were in the playoffs and [ __ ] like that but it's it's it's I think it's very it's gonna be very very close with the addition and their subtraction on defense don't don't don't let us score 60 points on you again back to back fools don't let that happen that's true and coming off that coming off that they're going to be fired up they going to be fir that this is the like some of these guys you got to watch out for them make sure that they don't over overdo it because they're hungry or whatever what not but so that's good that's that's good idea coach you're known for having a pretty good pulse on the team how do you how would you assess how the team feels right now are you talking physically mentally emotionally all okay good I think uh physically we're there these guys had a lot especially for our vets they've had quite a few days off now we've gotten a the last two days we had pads on yesterday uh pretty good day in pads we'll be smart because we're getting closer 10 days from game day um but I think physically we're pretty good we're pretty I think we'll be about as healthy as you could be for a team going the week one um mentally I think you know these guys are still highly motivated dialed into what we're doing um I think our coordinator done a really good job throughout ota's mini camping and obviously training camping preseason of just kind of spoon feeding guys right getting them comfortable building confidence building trust within the scheme and the concepts that were're running and allowing guys to make plays and now that'll start to you know dial up even a little bit more and I think emotionally man you got a guy you got a bunch of guys that's highly motivated want to go out there and play and then and you know you know put some good product on the field I know you've uh you've been part of putting a team together as an assistant coach but as the head coach now having look at the the big picture and the math of it all and how it all those puzzle pieces fit was that process for you it was good I mean you know Tesco again a lot of experience there done last 11 plus years another organization but I think just sitting there with him you know JoJo champ and just kind of seeing the big picture things not I always use the word bandaid just not sitting there plugging things and just really looking at the growth and development of our team and doing what's best for the Raiders not just now but immediate future right so we know that we gota you know it's a win down business but I think it's also important when you look at our team you see a lot of ful energetic players there that have a lot of potential and it's up to our coaches to unlock that and those players to keep going forward but it was really easy and pretty Ste seamless with Tesco to be honest with you um and I think to the players credit you know they went out there and competed so I mean you guys all saw what we saw in the preseason and those guys were rewarded by being on the roster see what I like what he's saying right there is because he's saying that you know lot a lot of a lot of people I've heard there like sitting there saying like oh man we got so many rookies 10 rookies on the squad and whatever what not you know what I mean I mean even though they're on the squad like what he saying the youthfulness is dope you know what I mean you want that young [ __ ] to keep everybody [ __ ] going motivated and [ __ ] like that you guys guys like Crosby and Wilkins that are actually like [ __ ] like showing these guys how to do it you know what I mean Bennett's looking different so having that younger energy is around and that's good to build this team you know a lot of potential a lot of [ __ ] things that we can look at man and I'm happy about that bro because the simple fact is is that like we haven't had that usually we kind of sprinkle it with more veterans and anything like that Spain's our ve one of our veteran linebackers now we got Diablo's kind of I don't know what we're going to look at what I don't know we're going to look at what or what we're GNA see from Diablo this year but you know we got the younger linebackers coming up you know what I mean so you know gayner like he's G to be another [ __ ] guy to look out for so you know it's pretty interesting man it's pretty interesting I like what he's saying though I like G I like G but I think I I think I I even commented on something like I think he's going to because people are saying that like Spain and like um and Diablo should watch their their their jobs and [ __ ] like that but like to be honest bro like I think the guy that's I like him but he was to you got you guys we got to remember he was on the verge of not making the 53 either you know yeah he played himself into the 53 and that I'm all good with that but I just said like I'm just saying like don't put hopes up too much into him like he might get some playing time if if anybody if he Stills if he still snaps from anybody is probably gonna be from like masteron and it might not be that much there either the one guy I think that I should be like that I would really be looking out for and I know that we didn't see him much in the preseason but you could tell when when when AP talks about him and that's ikenberg I think he's the guy that's that's going to be like when you see him and you see him in actual like games like bro like I've seen that dude play for a couple years now when he was at Ohio State and that that dude has great linebacker instincts I think when you see is he gonna be ready to go David is he gonna be ready to go week one or what I mean he's on the roster he's not on IR so I'm pretty sure like I mean I think they would put him on IR if he was gonna miss the first four games I think there's a deadline so if he passes that threshold I'm like I have I I I don't know if he might even play even game one but just I know that during this season just don't be surprised if you see more of him than a Gainer that's all I'm saying I like what we people says right here say resembles n nvar Bowman but with Dean abilities not bad not bad Arizona State too no he went to Florida State yeah yeah he was a seminal he was at North he was at uh North Carolina I think for the first two years and then he transferred because uh uh Lon put it out on Tik Tok he did like a a little quick U um background on him whatever however you want to call it or bio he's good he's good hey he was at he was at um North Carolina and then he uh started uh making some noise and his dad played uh I don't know what he played at Florida State but he ended up getting transferred over there and was breaking a bunch of records and stuff like that he was he is pretty good yeah good good two good schools were well known for linebackers right there yeah so let's listen a little bit more man see what it is guys you know with a lot of potential lari Gainer can you just as a former NFL linebacker can you evaluate his play Style and what advice do you give him also being an undrafted linebacker yeah no listen when he came in the door day one it was like wow this is this a pretty sucker here now you know mean he looks good and you know you saw the the movement with him in college from Florida State to North Carolina but there was always like man there's more to him and I I think the best thing that happened for him was that last game he went out there and played 90 plus snaps you know 70 plus on defense and another 15 or so on special teams and all you see all you saw throughout the game and we've been seeing all preseason but the guy just get better and better but more importantly somebody that was playing his heart out and it meant something to him even that last play where Niners are throwing the ball around if you look at it I mean he's on the ground three times tackling people and when the ball ends up at the two yard line he's right there finishing it so I thought he did an excellent job he's put himself in position not just a linebacker but on special teams to be one of the core guys for us there's still some development there at the linebacker position that you know will take place over the course of the season but he gives us a lot of flexibility because of what he's able to do both on the line scrimmage off the line off the ball linebacker and special team you guys signed Dar homes yesterday I know used to play for Patrick gr with giants what did you see from him that made you guys want to bring him in well actually go further than that I've known darn since he was 13 coached him on on 17 when he was a freshman so no his father though family well see I had didn't know that that's crazy I had no idea about that yeah that's what I was talking about earlier career spoke to him throughout his college process another Jack Jones situation with him and you know you know you look through that 53 man roster I know everybody saw our roster like okay you're all said and done but you know it's always about getting better and that was a great opportunity you know we had Nate Hobs there at the start nickel position and darn played a lot of football he's been productive as well so that gives us depth really good special teams player and a good Pro guys you just signed this week how much ramp up time do you think that they need before they're going to be effective for you out there on Sundays yeah I think that's all still to be um seen and watched I guess in practice today'll be a good opportunity to go out there and see them it'll be dialed back a little bit but more importantly we gotta get them up to speed with just our scheme how we do things here as a Raider um but they have skill sets that obviously you know when you make claims you see something right I don't think we make claims to put guys on the bench so obviously we see something where they can help us when is it is it immediate future is it week one week four I don't know we're not going to rush him out there and do it because it's going to look bad on us and them but I think it's more importantly just to get them up to speed of how we do things Dar his alignment his snap counts at various position he's played all over the field obviously does that kind of seamlessly fit into what you're looking for from that backup quarterback yeah position Flex I mean that's key for us right really the only guy we got that can go inside outside or Outside Inside is Nate hops so when you can add another player like that Isaiah palal does as well from safety position you see him a little bit at the nickel position seen that obviously in the preseason so just the more flexibility you can get the better our team makes us a better overall unit Harper was a guy that also played all over the field at Notre Dame he also played for Al Goldman who kind of runs an NFL defense there in South P what kind of flexibility does he bring to the table yeah I like his place now what I saw in film was a guy with a burst aggressiveness kind of controlling the back end as a young player watched him in college um you just saw guy each and every week get better in the preseason and then you know again whatever you can do to get your you know keep building depth in every room especially in the secondary for us uh is critical but he does have a skill set to play both safety and that nickel position see biggest challenge as a coach during these two weeks between games um too much time overthinking it trying to throw the whole Playbook and you know creating scenarios and chasing ghosts chasing waterfalls is like I like to tell our guys but that won't be the case with us less is more see I like that [ __ ] chasing ghost overthinking it less is more [ __ ] that's those are like good [ __ ] like solid ass [ __ ] sayings and less is more is where I think that's where when you start saying [ __ ] like that and start trying to you have to get that yeah that that less is more that is M's [ __ ] mantra for this year less is more let's go come on yeah hell yeah at times though too at times too there are some players yeah who really took a step up like I was think like a Malcolm C for example and wondering this year do you have an eye on a player who you think is just going to take that extra leap that probably didn't you know start off too well last year yeah I don't want to set the stage too too too high for him but I think he's already done it Trey Tucker I think you saw it in the preseason we've seen it we saw it in OTAs mini camp it just just been steady yey and then he got in the preseason and he did exactly what we've been seeing in practice and if he can continue that that that's that's going to help us big time because I mean obviously he can run by a lot of corners and safeties in this league and that's we know we're going to get with Devonte and Brock and Big Mike and Jobe we know we're going to get with the rest of our skill players but I think man when you got a guy that could just you know forward two and create that makes those DBS back up a little bit more you know you're gonna play him a little differently you play everybody else he wants some aggressive he wants aggressive dud everybody's saying you know uh easy they're chasing waterfalls they're calling [ __ ] Antonio left I pierce [ __ ] hey what was that movie uh the what's the the other guys when [ __ ] the what's the name kept on quoting [ __ ] TLC I Ain't Too Proud to Beg oh yeah creep creep I don't want no that role dog and he's gonna have everybody on the same page he's going to have everybody's going to come in on Monday or Tuesday whenever they come in for for ready for game week and they're going to come in with so much energy but I think AP is the guy that's going to make that energy and point it in the right direction and I think he's goingon to have them plenty ready for some next Sunday night next Sunday afternoon plenty ready plenty ready on a shirt that's on a shirt bro you I mean two's good one is cool two is better you know so you know listen I mean to be honest what mall's role on offense is still to be determined but we know what he can do we all seen that and he did that even as a kickoff returner so I think he's gonna be a really good job our staff is doing a really good job especially Tom McMahon of finding the right spot to put these gentlemen in and we gotta be smart right Trey Tucker are one of our starting receivers so mallister has a role I don't know is it what this guy this week is it that guy is it the hot hand but you know I think both guys have done an outstanding job now in a return game I think we've seen that both as returners and macaller P return and kickoff return cised up tuck stting what a year changes about him or or just what stands out about getting to know him yeah he's a football J you know we always talk about Max and um Christian about being the first guys in the building but he he's not too far behind and he stays late and he's done a lot of things without a lot of hype and things that we talk about throughout the building that's that's starting to show up a little bit and um I think our team is really taking a notice of that and obviously since we need him the starting quarterback he's kind of taking on that role with our skill position players been good to see in the building time between games players have a have a couple days off for the first time really in training camp I guess what do you want from them do you want them to get away from football you keep focusing on it I guess what is your message to them well our vets are kind of used to like I said they just had four days off they didn't play any game so if you go back that's Friday Saturday Sunday you know they come in Monday for a little bit so they have four days in there practice three days another four days off like I said we should be fresh what I expect for them is what we talk about it's 10 days before the game and this is for us we want to get off we're on the road it's a divisional fo um we can take time off later down the road not effective for us as well and it opens up play pass and everything for WI receivers in the offense so what I like what we've been seeing with our running backs I think zir has his legs underneath them I mean big powerful man bigger than he was last year more exposed looks like and then you know Alex Madison Dylan all those guys Amir they've all kind of got a role within offense but to be honest you know early Downs a lot of number three that's what I expect to see Shuffle that defensive tackle a little bit signing jonu from the Colts and releasing Byron young what went into that decision to kind add him from the Colts what did you guys Jah was here at our local pro day and and I liked him I mean I I'm was a little disappointed we didn't get a chance to draft them um but you watch you know you just look at the your roster you look at everybody else you look at the the waiver wire and you know you make a decision and we felt you know Jonah gives us a some more depth and some you know a little bit more juice at the dline room coach what are you expecting from Devon Diablo and Robert Spain this season yeah love love linebackers right love linebackers I like the same thing man I thought last year big growth with those two guys career year for both players right and they got to take it up to another notch you know at then day our defense runs through our linebackers I know a lot of talk is about Max Crosby and our d line but listen the brains of the operation is Robert Spain okay and Diablo now in year four playing linebacker looks like a linebacker moves like a linebacker talks like a linebacker and he understands this is a big year for him right everybody's expecting big things for him but the good part about it they don't have to do it by themselves you know they got a good front in front of them the calls come in they can communicate what I love to see by them two guys is just their ownership now like it's it's clearcut about who running the show on our defense and it's our linebackers co uh to that point you know Spain had a career high in interceptions last year just seemed like that was the area his game took a step forward why do you think that is and are you expecting more of the same this season yeah a little biased comment here I was his linebacker coach too but at the time literally that was one of the things that we talked about when we signed him was working on it and really all offseason myself him and the rest of linebackers we worked on a lot of just being Twitchy you know Vision on a quarterback just not wasting steps being more efficient in in our movement and I think that's what you really saw from spill he sees he believes that he runs the line and two of those interceptions came on just that right see him believe in run the line most sign these quarterbacks there's a little hitch stke there and if you can catch them you can make a play but I think he really put an emphasis on that because he wanted to be a complete linebacker you know he's a run stop guy he's a early down guy and he didn't like that I didn't like that for him either and that was something we worked on entire offseason and credit to him and showed up in the games what's the next up for him repeating it repeating consistency just like our team thank you see you guys people know T these people know TLC songs BR what's wrong with rule you're going to need a lot of guys who can tackle bro you know what I mean and and I think that's why they kept these guys around you're gonna get rid of the big dude put linebackers in there yeah but see this is the thing though like I think Tesco and whoever they bring in because like you like you said uh we don't have 53 we don't have 53 on the roster right I'm not too sure we have 52 right now matter because all they'll do is kick somebody off the practice squad to be honest and send somebody down and send somebody down that's just the way it works bro like that's the NFL for that's just the NFL for you like if they get somebody I'm sorry like the next guy that was on that list to barely make the 53 could be gone it could be it could be mauga it could be um you know Bernie it could be a guy like that you know what I mean so that that those are the guys that have to watch out if we do end up signing up a guy you know what I mean signing another guy because those are the guys that are on the verge and but I mean the one thing I will say is like like hopefully they're not picked up off any waivers if we do wave them because we do pick up somebody and they could join the practice squad but that's some that's going to be a iffy too because once you release them now they have to clear waivers If You released it from your 53 because you pick up somebody else you know what I mean yeah no that's what if you get released remember I left you that information on our chat if you get released you've been in the leag more than four years but if you you could go you could go to any team you want if you've been waved that means you've been under four years what I mean that would need have gotten they wouldn't even got released what like the day of the 53 because if they got already announced to the 53 they would need to get waved right now right if they get if like if if they signed somebody else they would have to get waved that's the only way now because you already signed to the 53 when the 53 had to come out on on what was it Tuesday or Monday they they had to announce that 53 so you were you were officially announced to the 53 so now if you get released you have to go through waivers so like say mauga or Bernie were to get released because we signed somebody then any team is allowed to pick him up the the 12 teams ahead of us before we could claim him again for our practice squad or he has to go through all waivers actually before we could claim them makes he makes it that far yeah that's if you get put on if you get put on if you get put on the 53 then you have to get weade you have to go through waivers but before the cuts that happened already or the waivers or whatever it goes by how many years you're in NFL you can go to any team you want like they you you know we give we're GNA give you 50,000 rers off with 40 he goes well I'll go with I'll go where the money's at yeah be on your practice sad yeah so if you're under four years you got to you gotta clear waivers no matter what you gotta clear waivers no matter what yeah that's exactly what I was seeing too so well that's what you have reported to us to brother so
