Active shooting reported at Broomfield apartment complex

e e e e e we still following breaking news in Broomfield right now yeah there's an active shooter situation say that this is at the Arista Flats apartments on Central Court near the First Bank Center residents living in the area are still being asked to shelter in place we do have some sky9 video from earlier this morning as well that we want to show you this is again an active situation we have crews out there right now we do know that uh residents in the area are being as to shelter in place we know that businesses have closed their doors as well and we know that Jefferson Academy which is a school in the area has also been placed on lockdown n as reporter Brianna Fernandez was among the first to get out there yeah Briana thank you very much for being out there we hope that you are safe right now you're well away from the scene we know what more have you learned yeah you guys we were the first ones on scene so we saw this unfold I actually spoke to neighbors who say we got here when everything started going crazy that's where more investigators started coming to the scene so we have several agencies here at the Arista flat apartment since we last spoke it has been a little bit more quieter but in the last couple of seconds I actually spoke to a couple of neighbors they were just walking down the sidewalk they said that they just got evacuated from their buildings according to them they said police officers told them to get out some of them are evacuating and going to a different parking lot this is by the first bank so I'm going to step out of the way show you the scene at the moment it's pretty much stayed the same since we last spoke you're seeing Broomfield police blocking this area so this is Broomfield Lane and Center Court we're seeing also SWAT investigators negotiators we have seen them come in and out actually right here at this intersection where we're seeing Broomfield police blocking that area so since we last spoke we actually spoke to neighbors they have shown me pictures of a window that actually has some bullet holes there's glass that's cracked we also spoke to someone who lives right next door to where this all unfolded she said that she knew the person that lived in that neighborhood she heard screaming right around 6:45 she also heard gunshots and police telling her she needs to evacuate she needed to get out because it was not safe now we have not heard any gunshots I know the last time we spoke Broomfield police said that this was an active investigation shots were still being fired we have not heard that since we've been here the the last last hour hour and a half since this all unfolded people here were getting notifications to shelter in place other people have not received anything actually broomfield's police tweeted out if you did not receive a notification to let them know because uh they're asking everyone that if you were in this area to evacuate you're seeing some folks right now with their bags with their pets as well as they're evacuating this is the recent evacuation as uh police are telling folks uh from Apartments further down from where I'm standing to leave to get out of the area it's still unsafe now we know that there is a press conference happening at 10:00 a.m. so in just a couple of minutes we're actually going to get more information from both Broomfield police North Metro Fire as well so we're going to ask all the questions because we're being told that there's someone that lives at this apartment so we want to know what actually happened in this active shooting investigation are they still looking for someone and of course once we get the latest details we'll be sure to update you both on air and online we also have more reporters here on scen Gathering more information on the other side of the street for now I'm live here in Broomfield Brianna Fernandez for 9 news all right bana thank you as you can see a lot of people do live in that area our Nate Lynn Who provided that shelter in place notification to us also said that they just reissued that shelter in place uh order around 9:30 as well now of course as you just heard from Rihanna we have told you that residents living in the area have been asked to do that shelter in place we heard from one of our co-workers earlier this morning right now we want to talk to another person who lives over there Aaron Maxi joins us over the phone Aaron you were one of the first ones also to get uh information about this at 7:30 this morning yeah I was uh walking my dog and came inside and there's a new traffic light over where all the cops started to congregate and so I thought it was a thunder Bender uh at first because there was only a couple of cop cars uh but it was clear uh from the demeanor of the cops uh in their voice and their yelling uh and turning people away and the running that it was something much more serious you saw the police activity out there did you ever hear the gunshots like we also hearing from other people in the area yeah so uh initially like I said when I saw the cops I thought it was just a fender bender but about a minute after they arrived to the scene I heard anywhere between 30 to 50 gunshots um being fired uh it sounded as if it was multiple not just two guns uh or it could have been assault style weapons just given the fire rate um in the amount of flurry that was going on Erin are you in your apartment right now and if so what are you seeing out any of your windows there right so I live on the third floor of the Uptown apartment so it's right across the street uh we are seeing uh some evacuations happening um down Broomfield Lane in uptown um but we also do see SWAT teams in full uh armor uh running around um in the Arista Flats area uh as well as several uh other police units uh blocking that road uh I believe it's uh Central is what it's called Central Lane yeah so from your Vantage Point Aaron it sounds like it's very safe to say that this is still an incredibly active scene out there yes um definitely active still and it it appears that there is something going on even right now as the cops are actively running uh we did see a couple of um police officers with longer Barrel rifles uh enter an apartment building maybe perhaps to get on a roof um but yeah it's very much still a developing scene I want to ask you to elaborate just really quickly on that Aon because we ourselves back here at the station do not have eyes there what what what do you see right now when you say that you're seeing people running yeah so uh when when I'm referring to people running uh I'm referring to uh the police officers on scene um there are some um just residents of the area um kind of walking around going to their cars but they are quickly redirected and and being asked to go back to their apartment or to evacuate um I do know that uh I am just outside of the area or at least right now I'm just outside the area of where the police have been asking residents to evacuate um so yeah that there's not a lot of civilians around it's mostly uh all police officers ambulances fire department Etc and we know that our reporter Brianna Fernandez who's also on scene said that she was seeing a lot of police officers as well running down the street with guns as well that was about an hour ago we know that SWAT is out there crisis negotiators are out there of course law enforcement is out there um Erin did you get another notification just just a few minutes ago about the shelter in place uh I have not uh received a second notification and the only reason I got the first notification is I actually uh called my wife's dad who's a police officer in Michigan and told him hey there's something going on he goes you need to sign up for emergency alerts right now so I did and I ended up receiving that first notification U but I haven't received a second one all right this is a good reminder for everybody else though this is a good time to sign up for those emergency alerts in case of a situation just like this Aon we appreciate your time thank you very much for speaking with us and helping us understand a little bit better what's happening in that area please please please be safe thank you we want to go over now to Erica Erica we know that this is right by the first bing Center and this is affecting several different apartment complexes are there any problems in the area in terms of getting around yeah at this moment I'm really not seeing any on any of the main surrounding roads this is of course right in the middle here where we're seeing this emergency icon on our map this morning uh this is just off of Wadsworth and Highway 36 as you can see it's between two major roadways a major highway and Wadsworth is of course a main thoroughfare at this point Arista Flats is right in the center here uh we've been talking about the scene along Central Court and Arista place this morning it doesn't look like we're dealing with anything significant as far as delays go in this area but of course something to watch out for we know folks are still supposed to be Sheltering in place and we just heard Aaron mention that he signed up for those alerts I know in the last 20 minutes or so Broomfield police tweeted out a link so that you can sign up for those emergency alerts so if you want to go to on X they posted that uh they've been adding updates to their their Twitter page there on X as well with updates and photos and kind of the scene this is one of the things that they tweeted out a little bit earlier this morning of just an insanely active scene at the Arista flats this morning again off of Central Court and Arista place this is from Broomfield police's Twitter so still a lot happening of course like Jordan and Cory said we've got Crews on the ground there still monitoring working to get more information then there's going to be an additional press conference at 10 o'clock this morning where we are hoping to learn more so I'll send things back to you Jordan and Cory and as we wait for that information I want to go back to the posts on X that you had just referenced we are just seeing one that was posted about 2 minutes ago that says the situation has not been resolved continue to shelter in place so that is what we are seeing out there clearly based off of Aaron who we just spoke with on the phone there's still a lot happening outside his window yeah we know some residents got that second notification Aaron did not we also know that some evacuations were still PL taking place for some of the residents in the Arisa flat Apartments as well again we know that Jefferson Academy school which is in the area is on lockdown we know SWAT crisis negotiators law enforcement they're all unseen and there's expected to be a media briefing coming up at 10:00 this morning we have cruised there and we're going to bring that to you here on 9 News yeah again though we do want to take this opportunity to remind you as Broomfield police are reminding people online as well if you are a resident and you did not receive an emergency reverse notification you are asked to sign up for those alerts right now we have those posted online for you to do so again if you are in this area we ask that you please be safe and as Cory mentioned we're going to wait for that 10:00
