but we start with the sad news that we brought you yesterday that the former England manager Sven yuran Erikson has passed away at the age of 76 um let's speak to Michael Dawson shall we who joins us right now very good morning to you Michael this is sad news isn't it good morning Rob yeah it's it's really sad and you see all the tributes that that came in yesterday for Sven uh an incredible man uh a man that I came across on more than one occasion and he was was he was the the first England manager to call me up at at the age of 19 I was away with England under 21s at the time uh with David plat and I think a few Center halfs had got injured and and I was called up and my first meeting with him he made me feel welcome um as a young player going into that environment was was incredible with with superstars but it made me feel part of of that group straight away and then again in in 2006 before the World Cup I was away with with the with a group and training before knowing I wasn't going to be part of the squad uh when they went to Germany but just to be involved and meeting him on those occasion was was a real honor yeah so you you're with the other 21s you suddenly get a phone call what was that first meeting like with him were you nervous was he welcoming how did that go he was very welcoming of course I I was nervous I was I was making the Step Up from from the 21s to the to the seniors um you know what with the play is going to be like but Sven being being the manager come and introduced himself and and just made me feel part of it straight away which which can be hard making that big step up um I I was playing in the championship at the time so to get that recognition for from him and just to be part of it and see how it worked he was a really really calm man and manager and I think that was the way he came across I was in that era where managers used to rant and Rave and go crazy at the slightest things that was anything buts fed he it was a real can when when he spoke in the change room uh as well on a on a personal note as well yeah that's Serenity around it seems to be a common theme uh that I've heard over the past 24 hours or so um a good man manager as well someone that the players felt that they could go to was that your experience that fact that he was approachable as well as calm well he was certainly approachable um like I've said I I I didn't have an A awful lot of experience going into into that group and if I needed anything I could chat to him but it was just the fact that he made me feel so welcome um along with the superstars and and everyone that I've listened to over um the time since Fen was diagnosed everyone coming out and speaking about how calm he was and and very open and his his mannerisms it's just the way way he was as a as a as a person but then he took that in never changed uh as a manager so yeah really really sad day yesterday yeah but what what I heard you say as well was was the surprise you said You' be you've been used to managers who are ranting and raving and suddenly there's this sort of laidback swed sort of just chatting away to you was that were you thinking what's he on about when's the anger coming yeah I mean that was that was the timings that I was obviously coming through the school boy and Forest and then getting into the first team ad managers that if you missed ah header you you certainly got told but Fen was was a different side to that uh and maybe the the earlier generation where the managers are now you don't have ranters and ravers I mean there's times when managers can lose and fener was no different there was times when he he had to let the players know you were you were wrong and you had to do better but generally he was always pretty C
