there's a reason we're playing this song oh go uh Steve last week yeah Steve let's what do you tell the story Steve B our Utah Insider joins us hi Steve yeah what the hell happened what what was the backstory here Hey Jo T oh G sorry um no it was uh you know it started out as a joke you know I threw a tweet out there at the press conference and then you know we're I didn't get to ask coach Whit and that obviously would have went super well had I asked that question to coach Whit whether the offense was hot to go you know it was just a stupid thought and then uh you know uh a friend Josh Furlong um you know he peer pressuring me into asking the question all day long and uh eventually the opportunity was there to ask the question to One cam rising and I thought if there was one guy on the team that would you know pick up what I was putting down with the hot to go reference I thought it would be cam Cam's old though Cam's an old guy yeah but he's you know he's not that old he's still he's still in college he's old and Rich he's checked out he's he's a touch he uh and it it didn't hit yeah it did not land with with Cam he had no idea what I was referring to and I uh yeah that ha a p e l l R oan all right that sounds like something I'm going to forget almost immediately you're not going to be able to she's the next Superstar uh Steve really start wherever you want to start I'm I'm curious to how you digested last night's game well yeah I think you know we know what last night's game was right it it was all intents and purposes a tuneup game for Utah that's what these FBS and sccs matchups are and you suu comes up Salt Lake City they play a game and they get a leave with a nice little paycheck to take care of of the rest of their academic calendar for sports and and that's just what these games are and so for Utah right um this is uh an opportunity to get into a competitive situation um you know in a game in live action and to just kind of get a better feel for what you've got uh in certain situations and I think ultimately um you know I think we saw what we needed to see from Utah last night I think uh cam Rising Brant keithy doing what they did uh Rising going 10 of 15 for 254 yards five touchdowns uh every time he was on the field that drive ended in a touchdown short night for him and then you know keithy uh looked as dynamic as as he did before his injury finished with three touchdowns 69 yards on four catches and and that was what we ultimately I think if you asked Utah fans before the game what they wanted to see it would be one cam rising to Brent keithy uh and that's what we needed um to see last night we got a good dose of those guys you know and then from there you know just kind of understanding that you know this is just an unfair game and Utah is going to dominate the you know control things and and that's what they did so you know you can't take too much away from a game like that you know in terms of what it means for Utah and projecting that to the Big 12 uh but they certainly you don't leave that game feeling worried or or anything about that like that uh in terms of Utah's potential this season Kyle Winningham uh tends to tell on himself he has a hard time keeping secrets when he really likes a player uh and we were listening to a clip earlier this week and he mentioned dejon Stanley and then he came back to talk about dejon Stanley and I think he mentioned dejon Stanley a third time he knew there was something there uh and he said we've got a you know he talked about the running backs he's like well we have a special special package for dejon Stanley we're GNA get dejon Stanley on the field and we'd like to see him and I thought he was the breakout star of the game is that something you think can be maintained and what's his backstory yeah dudy Stanley his nickname's dudy um so if you hear coaches or players reference Duty that's what they're talking about dejon Stanley uh this this kid you know coach ganther said I think summed it up best at the NFL Camp when he was talking about the running back room and you know what he saw from the group and obviously you saw the separation he saw the separation in terms of a Kai Bernard Jaylen Glover Mike Mitchell know separating themselves among the group but then he you know he made it clear that dejon Stanley was going to be a factor for this running back room as well just because he operates at a different speed than everybody else on the field and you saw that last night he just he has that athleticism that is a big- Time Advantage um you know and it speaks to I shouldn't say it speaks to but that is due in large part to his his background he was a track athlete in high school a fantastic track athlete uh he was one of the top 200 meter runners in in high school last year or two years ago he registered last year at Utah actually um so he just he has that track background and uh and was a dynamic running back in high school I think he finished with over 2,000 yards his senior season and again it's just that speed that he brings to the field that is it's a big Advantage for him so you know he's it's it's going to be interesting with him because he's not the biggest running back I think he's still only about 185 pounds so he may not be able to handle you know that typical workload but you know in terms of what we saw last night I think that is absolutely things that you know you can continue to see maybe not necessarily the 64 SC and 79 yd touchdown scores you can't count on those necessarily but you can they can use him in the manners that they did in the ways that they did um last night in those jet sweeps you know in those outside Zone runs and getting him out in space that can absolutely continue to be a thing in the playbook for Andy lwig and again he just his speed is a big time advantage and uh and I think it will it will allow him to be uh you know an impact player for Utah this season who jumped out to you on the other side of the ball on D man um it's uh it starts in the trenches with keano tanasa I was I was really impressed he didn't he didn't end up with you know sacks or tackles for loss but I just thought he was in the back field pretty regularly and that was good to see from him you know he worked hard this off season to put on weights uh that was an area that he he needed to improve his ability to hold up against you know double teams and and you know powerful run teams uh just to hold his ground a little bit better and I think that added weight has still he's added weight but he's still been able to maintain you know what his game is built on and it's that quickness it's that first step off the SN you know off the snap and you know he was able to get into the back field pretty regularly so you was impressed with keano tonasa Smith Snowden looked great uh you know in that nickel spot for Utah last night uh you know and looks comfortable and coverage you know and he should look comfortable know in that sort of matchup he's just you know he just has an advantage in terms of his athleticism against those receivers at suu but I think what stood out the most was um you know his willingness to mix it up you know at the line of scrimmage um you know both in terms of press coverage but then also his willingness to to throw his should in there and tackle and make tackles I think he ended with two tackles for loss actually so you know he looked great last night I think Utah's got you know good thing going with him there in that spot and you know with uh with the unfortunate injury to Kenan Johnson which you know it does sound like it's you know at least what I've heard it does sound like it's going to be a season ending injury for him which is just unfortunate it was a non- contct thing uh and and so you know Utah's going to have to figure that out and the nice thing is is the guy that filled in for him Scooby Davis you know had a solid outing uh he had he had the interception where you know he showed a good awareness and came off of came off of one receiver to make a play on on the ball and you know just look good he's going to now uh have to step up into a bigger role than what was planned for him this season but I think you know getting into the game last night and and making that play you know that's going to build confidence for him moving forward and then Utah's you know they're they're going to have to figure that quarterback spot out but I think those were the three standouts for me Keo tasa Smith Stone and Scooby Davis what needs to be cleaned up uh before they take on Baylor in week two yeah Baylor coming coming to Salt Lake City next week offensive line um you know it was interesting it cam was only pressured twice you know pressure only got to him twice last night he did take a hit on the very first play which that was that was unsettling a little bit to see that um but you know the the offensive line settled in for the most part with Cam in there um cam was good getting the ball out quickly again he was only pressured twice uh but uh it just there were some issues with protection where you know Caleb lomu and Spencer Fondo they're tremendous athletes they can get to the depths that they need to in their pass blocking schemes uh pretty easily and last night that actually was kind of the issue for them was they got too deep almost and it allowed suu to counter to the inside and get pressure you know honor and Isaac Wilson when he was sacked it was due to I mean the dude executed a perfect spin move to the inside um but it's it was Spencer and Caleb giving up that those gaps and giving up that space to that allowed suu to get inside uh to get pressure on Isaac and to you know get inside Camp so you know I would like to see pass protection cleaned up in that sense first and foremost that's going to be important uh particularly important against Baylor because they're similar uh in terms of they like to attack gaps they like to get their defensive lineman into the back field they don't want to sit there and and hold on to blocks and and and maintain their they're trying to get into the back field and create havoc and so that's going to be key for this offensive line is to clean up pass protection and then also two in the Run game I thought the Run game was strong but still some things to clean up there um you know and then would like to see you know a little bit more out of the receivers um next season and or not next season but next week um you know it was drien zipper led the way with I think 38 yards receiving and and Dorian singer um he only caught two passes for 31 yards would like to see you know that group be a little bit more productive and just kind of figuring out how to get those guys the ball a little bit more next week I think those are the two big things for me is you know the offensive line and then getting the receivers uh you know opportunities or are getting the receivers to you know create separation a little bit more whatever it needs to be with with those two groups Steve thank you very much for if you thought it was all right he wasn't wearing any gear was what she supposed to in Broncos gear that's what he should have been he should have had the headband on he should have gone full ninja act matching with Isaac Isaac had one yeah Isaac had one well that's the Wilson look um I remember dad was Dad was right back to his UT gear it's like Dad was couldn't wait to dust that stuff out of the closet he looked great I think he got to throw on the you the uh the gear and support the Ute gear that's what Reno Mah did when he had a family member who was playing at the U yeah absolutely yeah you go out and support you do but he was just in like offwhite like some cream color jumper dollar dollar or you can go the other way too or you have to go the Brian Keel way where you go to a Utah G A Utah game but you're still decked head to toe and coug stuff as long as he wasn't wearing jet stuff he's fine he really could have turned the world on its head and worn some Jets gear last night that would have been a story you want to lead KSL sports.com you want to be number one in clicks give me Zack Wilson and Jet skar at the youth game why maybe you just had some left over what's controversial about that I don't care but the listeners care the people care do they yeah they care you're talking about what he was wearing right now well I thought it was what color his sweatshirt was I thought it was notable that he was not wearing any gear at all I actually wouldn't have blamed him if he went one way or the other but to go just neutral about it I don't know feels like kind of the coward's way out wow a coward's way out cream is the most neutral of Colors Let's see are we G to see ZW again that's what I call Zach uh I don't think so Utah's next Thursday game is on the road at ASU oh Leisa it'll be there I said Zach care I mean I do care about Lisa I want to see Lisa at the game I was bummed she wasn't there but I want to see Zack at the games supporting little brother well this one was easy because obviously the season hasn't started and you knew that Isaac was going to get into the game yeah safe bet right in other games there's no you know necessarily safe bet that he's gonna play uh Broncos this is the next time we're gonna see Zach Wilson at a Utah game and we will see him Broncos host the Chargers on October 13th Utah plays at Arizona Iona State Friday night I bet you Friday night he goes down to ASU because ASU is a bad football team so there's a decent chance we're going to see see old Isaac play all right let's here for Zach Wilson back in town you wouldn't go to any your brother's games if you were in the same situation Joe wasn't much of an athlete could really hit a baseball far weird but that's it he's tall so they always made him play center in basketball and that's did he DH though or something uh no he's cleanup yeah no he could he could throw he could he had an arm it's more of a natural baseball player okay but now they probably yeah they probably marked to sherid and put him at first base minimum impact you get a DH in high school that's why I said that no we didn't play we didn't play high school sports the Andersons no he was locked in the uh the film room the TV room editing pictures well that worked out for his career it did it was a great choice it was way better than wasting time playing baseball he wasn't going to make it as a baseball player only an idiot plays High School baseball yeah I'd bet that a good portion of our Lloyd just happened to wrap up his conversation said that yeah you know Lloyd was an All-American am Murray right yeah second base yeah where'd you hit Lloyd in the two hole seven well you need the lead off nine they wanted it back in the lineup a little back in the lineup yeah as long as you hit over 130 Lloyd we'll be happy Lloyd crowd the plate buddy we need to get that Portuguese power back in the lineup a little bit I want you to see as many pitches as possible Lloyd we are just we just want you to wear out the pitcher don't swing just watch because I don't think this guy can find the plate and the closer you stand the better chance you have to get on base go up there to get hit absolutely Johnny Damon Jason veritek just get on base brother I was actually asked to do that in a game before I would are you kidding me I would be get hit on purpose but really lean over the uh the strike zone and I was left-handed so I got hit all the time Money Ball smart baseball easiest way to get on base just go take a pitch it's all right it'll bruise a thought of oh man Utes must have a new backup quarterback Brandon Rose is going to be the guy because I saw Caleb loner catch a great pass and the announcer said it was from Brandon Rose and I thought okay I only saw the receiving end I didn't see the pass so Brandon Rose must be the guy made a great back shoulder throw in fact he called it that way and now a third-year sophomore into the game for Utah it is Brandon rose rose takes a shot toward the end zone that ball is caught for a touchdown Caleb loner all right I got to admit I completely screwed that up it looked like they were going to bring Brandon Rose into the game based on warming up on the sideline that was a touchdown pass for Isaac Wilson that was a great throw by Wilson don't I also saw Brandon rose on the sideline throwing the ball into the kicker net I think is what it looked like like just getting his arm a little bit loose throwing the ball around uh and then welcome to the uh welcome to your first touchdown Isaac Wilson he's now credited to Brandon Rose Brandon Rose nope that is not not the same person A Rose by Any Other Name whoops maybe I can write that headline um yeah that was tough you got to know who the quarterback is that's we talked about you know mispronouncing names and some of the Polynesian names uh are difficult if you've not seen them before or or said the names a whole lot still not an excuse but not knowing the quarterback is either you got to fire your spotter or you don't have a spotter or you're just not doing your job very well uh the forgivable one is when there's the same number correct like the the seu guy I think it was number 25 who's listed as a running back but it was a defensive play and they don't have names on their jerseys and he's like I think it's this guy I'll forgive him for that I'm with you that that is more challenging but yeah the Brandon Rose and uh and Isaac Wilson do not have the same number last I checked completely he even like set him up yeah been waiting for this for a long time nope no that's not it no that's the same guy who's been playing for the qu and a same guy same number can you fire your spotter right there is that a spotter problem is that what we determined leave on the tarmac was it uh what's her name down on the sideline sending up info about who's warming up or whatever there's a guy right next to them with a pair of binoculars in the broadcast booth and ESPN plus because it's the national TV broadcast probably got the big Booth there's a few different ones there's the visitors there's the home booth and then there's the the big National Booth so they should have had everything you got your big laminated play sheet however you want to do it as a play-by-play guy that was tough touchdown Brandon Rose Brandon Rose oh I mean Isaac his his brother Zach Wilson that we've been showing the entire time yeah the entire game with old Mike gotta make Brandon Rose feel bad too because now like he has touch know many texts he got yeah back shoulder 10 question marks that'll win you the backup job 15 exclamation points Isaac Wilson who well the one who threw it hard Emoji oh didn't keithy do a hard heart thing he did after he scored he did you think that was a general he loves everyone or was that mentioned like was that for one person it's for everybody it's for all of us in the of Utah we're excited to see him come back even Christian even Christian who's an suu guy no you don't think that he's he's got a sweetheart yeah maybe it's pretty sappy shouting out your sweetheart though when you score right I don't need to Pat myself on the back for this take that we talked about yesterday but did we forget how good Brant keithy was like I I was surprised even how fresh he looked I mean he should be he hasn't played in two years but he didn't look like he had any questions about the health of his knee they gave him a lot of time off they probably could have rushed him back last year they didn't they let him be fully cleared for this year yeah that's why he was the number one tight end over Dalton conate he's awesome he is really really fast he's super strong he's not huge I look at Dalton cancade now well he's had a year in the NFL of course he looks as big as he does Brant doesn't look that big to me but man he's talented we've gone ba basically the whole show Almost and not talked about the wide receivers and I thought they blocked well I was really watching The Blocking I thought that you know I wondered like are they going to you know Force the ball to Dorian singer or is he gonna have to fall in line to be a Utah receiver and yeah he blocked great incredibly well to the point where the name we had never mentioned once was Utah's leading receiver as far as actual receivers go in passing yards drien Zipperer you you predicted it then Dorian singer two catches he did have 31 yards no the I mean dejon Stanley was their Stanley was the guy receiver yeah but he had their leading I guess yardage receiving wise but he doesn't even play receiver just Makai Bernard 2.0 but faster right yeah he's going to be playing Corner in the playoff this year I'm excited to see what he does there but yeah no the receivers were an afterthought as usual as usual we'll see we'll see if Dorian singer gets more involved got a block first you got to get that chemistry going you want a pass come your way but man it was almost and look this is best case scenario because you want to get the ball to your best player and you want your best players to look good and cam rising and Brant keithy are Utah's two best players if you want to put Junior tfon in there Lander Barton I'll listen but those are Utah's two best Playmakers man thank goodness Max Hall uh didn't have the same opinion when he had Dennis PA we never would have even heard of Austin Collie yeah and that helped was nice to have both but you can have both as by Point you're going down the road well when you have to throw it to keithy on every play literally just said this is worst case scenario is worst case scenario and you're happy because it's your best players but I did say this is worst case scenario because now default Cam's gonna look for keithy every single time he snaps the ball and rightfully so but it's even better if you have two or three or four guys you can get to and you can get the ball to all of them but it's got to be really easy when you're a quarterback to say I remember game one when brandan keithy got me three touchdowns in the first half by himself dejon Stanley had the other two and credit cam I mean he had at one point he had 10 completions and five touchdowns was pretty ridiculous but yeah that's that's almost the point of it's such an easy fall back that you just go to it every time and ideally Utah at its best is going to have the super Dynamic offense and all these different options and yes Dorian singer maybe he's the second guy or the third guy or the fourth guy but he's a guy and I I didn't feel that way yesterday not rightfully so throwing it to keithy every time just because it's safe and comfortable if he had Randy Moss on the team I bet he'd spread it out what do you bet me he had the best receiver in the confence it would not be like oh he only got two catches because he's busy throwing to keithy over here that's not how it works that I mean that was the point of the Austin colie Dennis P thing like throwing to Dennis P was really safe and easy they did it a lot for that reason imagine if that's all you did I I just feel like you're by saying well Keith is just amazing you got to throw to him on every play How could you blame him well you can like that's that's not necessarily the best way to go what I said I just said that's what cam did do and that's who cam is as a quarterback cam is not but my point is is not Max Hall like cam is not that type of passer but if singer is a baller then they're either he's either not or they're Miss using him I would uh say I don't have a definitive answer on that yet right because we've only seen him for one game but if you end up telling me that Utah has a receiver on their team that they didn't fully utilize when he was there I'm not going to be shocked at the end of the year Dorian singer might be better than cam Rising is able to highlight who's an example of that is there one I don't know if there are really strong examples of that uh you know Tim Patrick he was hurtt whole time so he doesn't count so if you want to say yeah Utah just doesn't get the r wide receivers but like Devon V is gonna maybe start for the Broncos let's see what V does he was fine last year when they actually started to throw to him which was like three quarters the way through the year yeah but they waited half the year because they kept trying to figure out you know who's going to replace dton concate uh all right stay tuned Jake and Ben and to be fair that wasn't cam Rising pass to him Jake picks the game because he won last week what was the last week so last week the game was Delaware State at Hawaii Jake picked Hawaii I took the Rainbow Warriors Jake is one and0 right now do we know what the final score was no uh we're just going plus one or minus one Jake is plus one right now so Jake's up one game so Jake also gets to pick again he's got the burden and this is ideally a better game because that was like a 40o swing last game all right what do we have so this week we're going to be watching the University of Miami Ohio nice at Northwestern oh wow the over under is set at 392 the the current line is Northwestern minus 3 okay Northwestern Miami of Ohio northwestern's just recently cleared a very horrible sexual assault trafficking problem in the athletic department uh but last time we saw them they were beating Utah in the bowl game they stink they do stink Miami is going to win you're taking Miami of Ohio on the road on the road watch it guts book it Wally zby then he was near Miami of Ohio it's happening dude okay Jake has Miami of Ohio taking down Northwestern in the worst game of the weekend thank goodness we have ESPN plus we can watch these that's a pretty bad that's a pretty bad game can watch these games 39 and a half in a season opener dude Ben UTEP Nebraska got Fox ESPN plus gets just the drgs the dgs we're gonna really regret subscribing to this thing just the drags terrible that's our guy that was complaining about Alabama stealing his kicker that's right Miami Ohio yeah that whiner is coming out on top this weekend okay I like this game this is a this is an exciting game other good games this weekend we got a couple there's a couple of decent games Georgia Clemson obviously the one everyone's gonna be watching I expect Georgia to win big uh Penn State and uh West Virginia yeah and you know what actually Minnesota North Carolina was fun I wore my Minnesota socks and they missed the game-winning field goal I think UNLV will beat Houston okay that would be uh that would be big for UNLV who was weirdly talented this year and then obviously the game Sunday 5:30 p.m. USC LSU it's gonna be a blowout I think so too I'm I I my new favorite story is just watching USC football I'm excited to watch the next five years of USC just stinking and pl just absolutely getting destroyed by big 10 teams because the big question has always been this mystery how does USC lose to Utah every year Well Utah's very tough and USC is very soft that's how well half of the Big 10 is really tough they're not all good but they're really tough so by week four when you've been banged around every game you're going to barely get out of the tunnel let alone if have to play in the snow yeah wait till it gets ugly the thing is is USC used to be tough that was like their they were big hired stink and Riley yeah they hired stink the the softy thought how do we eliminate one of our edges of being the toughest West Coast team what separated us from Oregon we were tough well we don't want to do that are you stupid why would we do that we were the biggest strongest fastest team we took the every game that's really hard to do let's get away from that let's see LSU's tough Michigan's tough Wisconsin can be tough Minnesota's not going to be that tough Penn State's tough Washington's pretty tough Nebraska plays pretty tough Notre Dame tough yeah they're gonna get bullied seven wins I hope so maybe eight and fingernails is somehow GNA succeed in Chicago okay I woke up and I watched hard knocks this morning he didn't play in the last game but man did he look awesome he did not play in the preseason but boy was he good you love that guy I'm all in they were teaching him how to uh they were teaching him how to uh clock the ball so you don't accidentally get uh intentional grounding because apparently if you take a step back and Spike it you get intentional grounding I didn't know that so you got to keep both feet on the ground burned Kirk Cousins last year where he go Kirk so uh they want to uh they want to make sure he's doing that right and then he didn't suit up enjoy your weekend everyone we'll be back on
