all right this one is going to ruffle some feathers for sure some of you guys have asked me to make a list of things that I cannot recommend or I didn't like or maybe gear that was just plain bad and to be honest it actually wasn't that easy because most of the stuff I've tried throughout my life throughout 25 years of playing guitar actually wasn't garbage or anything like that so what I don't want to do is make a video that is all negative I'm not going to hate on any Brands however I will speak the truth and will tell you exactly what gear was not good or I just did not like at all I'm going to do this without any censoring or anything I have a list here on my phone I'm going to read it off here number one Gibson custom shop and Gibson USA es 335s lately so let's say from the last two to 3 years have been so incredibly unstable in terms of quality quality the thing is that I tried five or six different ES3 35s 64 Custom Shop 61 Custom Shop two USA series and I guess one other Custom Shop different colors too and the variance and quality was just ridiculous I had es 335s on my lap that were so so mediocre and they cost 5 grand and by mediocre I mean not a bad guitar per se but there was no wow about them at all and then some of the typical Gibson pains really poorly cut nut slots super high action weird fret levels at some points and soundwise some were good some were and I'm not a Gibson hater at all look I even have my favorite Gibson of all time here and I play it all the time it's a custom shop 58 uh it was a present and uh it's the best Les tul I've ever played um it's such a good guitar the sustain of this is awesome I've played many many gigs with this one and it's been with me for 13 years I guess and uh I don't want to miss it a single day because this Gibson guitar is amazing actually the amount of Gibson guitars I have played that were amazing is pretty high shocking me though the es335 that I've played there was not even one amongst them that I would have taken home so here's my little tip es 335s don't buy them online you can only go wrong you might have a es335 that is great I personally have played a couple 335s lately that were just not good enough for the price that was asked number two the current line of Mexican telecasters by Fender I'm a huge Fender Telecaster fan but there are some products in their lineup that I just don't understand and the one that puzzles me the most is actually the fender Mexican Telecaster to me that product is pointless because I have have played everything from the lowest Squire to my custom shop 52 butterscotch Telly by Fender that I love so much and I have to say the midling guitars in the fender lineup sometimes just don't make sense the fender Mexican Telecaster is much more expensive than the Squire I guess it's it's a markup of like 300 bucks or something and when you go for the Mexican T instead of the Squire you get all the downsides of Telly the ones I've played were much much heavier than the Squire ones probably because they were made out of Alder whereas the squires are made out of pine but who wants a heavy Telly right and even worse who wants a heavy Telly and pay more for it also in my opinion the pickups suck in both the Squire and the fender Mexican telecasters so you have to change the pickups anyway why wouldn't you want to change the pickups on the tally that is cheaper to begin with so you might end up at the original price of Fender mexical but you have great pickups in there fret levels aren't better finishes aren't better I just think the Squire classic viy is a product that is very very hard to beat and if anybody asks me how to get into the Telecaster game I always recommend the Squire instead of the Mexican Telecaster because I don't think it does anything better than a squire you're just paying a lot for this name on the head stock third piece of gear that I actually didn't really like when I tested it is is controversial to say the least because it's an absolute best seller it's the JHS Morning Glory I think I've heard Josh Scott say the morning glory is his absolute best selling pedal ever and the funny thing is I'm friends with the company Josh and I were connected by Instagram and I sometimes check uh pedals out for them in general I have a very friendly relationship to JHS sometimes they sent me stuff for free but this is my honest opinion so in all honesty the Morning Glory never actually was a pedal for me not saying that it's bad not saying that it's poorly built it just I don't understand what it does to be honest I understand a lot of people use it as the always on pedal on their pedal board but for me it just didn't do it I just put it on I tried with a couple different profiles I tried with an N I was like I don't get it so to stress that again it's a good product in the sense that it's very wellmade and a lot of people like it and the build quality of JHS is perfect it has a sound that to me really doesn't do a lot and doesn't justify the price at all I do like a lot of other JHS pedals though not a Clon the JHS moonshine is my absolute favorite solo boost pedal ever because it has a clean up I love it but the morning glory is not for me I don't understand what it does I don't get it I don't get what other people like about it to me uh it's just um not really a Difference Maker let's just put it that way fourth piece of gear that I never really liked and I actually do think it's garbage is by this brand Marshall huge Marshall fan here I'm not hating on the brand or anything actually right over there I have an original 87 Silver Jubilee the followers of my channel know that I love that thing I deify it it's a great Marshall sound to me it's the essence of like a runchy rock sound and I love the brand I love Marshall but but the Marshall Vintage Modern is absolute garbage here's the story I had a Bogner Shiva silver panel and I believe only the first 200 or 300 shivas had silver panels very very rare um they had some issues on their own but the sound of the silver panel shivas was absolutely awesome when I was very young I think it was 19 at the time or so and I for some reason thought I don't need the Shiva anymore I want the Marshall sound again so I sold the Shiva and got the amp that was all vog at the time which was the Marshall Vintage Modern real bone head move on my side I agree and guys no kidding I was convinced it was broken it sounded absolutely anemic it sounded like garbage so much so that I took it to an amptech and had it checked out and the amptech was like no your amp is toally F that's just how it sounds and I'm like no way and I sold it like a week later nothing about that app makes sense it has the two different gain knobs that don't really make sense the effects Loop is absolutely atrocious it sounds plain bad and all it was really good for was a clean platform for pedals because as soon as you turned up the game it sounded awful so the Marshall minage modern for me total flop I think it's a garbage piece of gear um I don't think you should buy it I just think you're way better off buying one of the Silver Jubilee reissues even though I feel like the 87 still sound better but that's a different topic for a different day generally speaking I think any Marshall you could buy today in today's lineup of Marshals sounds better than the Marshall Vintage Modern fifth piece of gear that I actually could not stand it's the mxr duat tone guys if you're copying one of the most sought after Drive pedals and whether or not the hype about the king of tone is actually Justified debatable in my opinion but when you try and copy that or offer an alternative for that you need to get it 100% right otherwise it will always be measured by the goal standard and that goal standard is way better than what you just put out in other words the Duke of tone I had it here here and it just didn't deliver at all it sounded like every other Drive pedal and the king of tone doesn't I understand it's a good option for people that don't have a lot of space in their pedal board want a small pedal board just want a simple solution and a good sound and drive that's fine but if you use the colors of the original pedal you name it Dukat tone then I think you just need to deliver and to me the Duke of tone didn't maybe you like it that's fine uh I didn't think it was up to par with the originals at all can't recommend it but opinions are different and we all hear things uh differently music is totally subjective so that's just fine I'm just saying that's not for me super happy though if it works in your workflow and last but not least uh maybe a little bit of periphery in that case the road nt5 microphone for recording acoustic guitar this microphone has probably been sold over a million milon times to people who use it for overheads or acoustic guitars and all that stuff it's actually being recommended uh for use with uh acoustic guitars when I use it and try to record my martin dh2 that thing sounded absolutely awful but it sounds great in this room so it's probably about the microphone or my mic placement but um I achieved way better results with the same placement but different mic so that's out of the equation I guess there's still a possibility that I just don't understand that microphone however the nt5 by Road might be a bestseller just like the JHS um morning glory is a bestseller but that mic just sounds anemic to me it's so try it has no body um the mids are kind of strange it's it's kind of high-fi sounding and you can't really EQ that out of it later in the mix I feel like so whenever I want to record acoustic guitars the road N5 is not it however I know lots and lots of people who use it every single day and swear by it I'm like guys not in my room not not in here I don't know what it is but again no hate I don't want this to be overly negative I'm just saying that doesn't fly with me much better alternative here a good nman microphone nman obviously huge brand huge Legacy based in Berlin just around the corner from here of course it's a lot more money but the km 184 is to me the gold standard when it comes to acoustic guitars so Road nt5 and I probably won't become friends anytime soon but that's just fine um it has a million other friends in the world and that's just cool and those have been the six pieces of gear that I absolutely didn't like I hope you got something out of this do you have an opinion on these let me know write a comment if you think differently and if you agree but but please keep it friendly last time I did this when I talked about three Marshall amps that you should not buy people got really angry specifically the users of Marshall that I mentioned in that video obviously so leave a comment if you want I might chime in here and there and I see you in the next one
