Tornado touchdown in Anoka County; West Nile in Minnesota

[Music] this is Minnesota today for Friday August 30th I'm Emily Reese and here's what's happening in Minnesota the National Weather Service twin City's office says it's confirmed at least one tornado touchdown from yesterday's storms that's in enoka County north of Andover no word yet on the strength of that tornado or how long it was on the ground yesterday the weather service has two Crews working today to survey storm damage one team is in inoka and ianti counties the other survey crew is in Western Wisconsin where spotters reported a tornado yesterday across parts of Pierce St Croy and Dunn counties between River Falls and monomane the storms also caused extensive StraightLine wind damage there were no immediate reports of injuries in Minnesota July through September is the highest risk season for mosquito born diseases like West Nile Virus Erica Zurich has more the Minnesota Department of Health reports three cases of West Nile virus and one one death in the state this year a few other cases are also under investigation West Nile Virus is the most common mosquito born disease Nationwide hot humid weather elevates infection risk in the late summer months the Metropolitan mosquito control district says a small percentage of people become ill from West Nile Virus even in areas where the virus is active if infected symptoms like body AES headaches and fever May resolve quickly but more severe infections do occur people can protect themselves from the virus by using bug spray and removing standing water from their property I'm Erica Zurich Minneapolis City officials say the city is on track to end the year with a larger police force than it had last year police chief Brian O'Hara says it'll be the first time since 2020 that the department will see an increase in sworn officers the Department's numbers have dropped dropped significantly since the unrest following the police killing of George Floyd mayor Jacob fry says the city's recruitment efforts are paying off recently the city council approved a new police Union contract which includes a pay raise that's expected to make Minneapolis Police some of the highest paid law enforcement officers in the state a nonprofit government Watchdog group has filed a lawsuit demanding more information about the state's response to the 2020 Riot Matt sepic has more public record media is seeking transcripts and recordings of interviews with Governor Tim Walls Minneapolis mayor Jacob fry and other leaders that the Wilder Foundation used to compile its 2022 review of how the state responded to the civil unrest the nonprofit says it filed a request under the data Practices Act 2 years ago but the Department of Public Safety has not produced the documents the group argues that time is of the essence because walls is running for vice president it's also seeking a list of people interviewed and correspondents about the city's request for the National Guard according to the lawsuit DPS told public record media that it does not have some of the data that the group is requesting I'm Matt sepic Minneapolis the ojibway language version of Star Wars A New Hope is showing in theaters around the State starting today locations include the premere theater in clo the CC theater in bigi and Marcus theaters around Minnesota and neighboring states the film premiered earlier this month in Winnipeg Canada the ojibway language dub of Star Wars was a collaboration among the D Dakota ojibway Tribal Council the University of Manitoba lucasfilm and the Winnipeg based indigenous bro broadcaster APN in sports the Minnesota Gophers lost their season opener last night to North Carolina at Huntington Bank Stadium the Gophers next will host Rhode Island on September 7th University of St Thomas football team's nationl long 31 game home winning streak came to an end last night as the tommies were upset by Sue Falls Tommy host Northern Iowa on September 7th Minnesota lyns take a seven game winning streak into tonight's game against the wings in Dallas Minnesota Twins try to snap a four-game losing streak as they open a home Series against Toronto tonight Minnesota United host San Jose on Saturday San Jose is in last spot in the MLS go for women's volleyball team starts their season Sunday the Vikings start their regular season on September 8th in New York your forecast for Minnesota tonight clear skies lows in the 50s tomorrow partly cloudy there is a chance of rain across the north highs will be in the upper 70s to the mid 80s that's it for Minnesota of today thanks for listening Jacob aloy will have an update for you on Tuesday morning and I hope you have a great weekend [Music]
