[Music] hey everyone tyler here at the movie beat back with another korean movie review uh this one is a brand new korean film so i'm gonna keep it as spoiler free as possible and i just really want to give you guys a heads up on these brand new films that are coming out so i realized that not everyone is able to see these right away but it's something i hope that uh will put these movies on your radar for when they eventually and hopefully make their way towards you in a streaming service or dvd blu-ray hopefully especially if it's something that you're interested in so i was just able to check out the brand new korean film called the day i died it stars kim heisu jong-un and no jung-hee so those are basically the main actors and i just got to say up front that this is turning out to be quite a year for women in korean film and i say that because i'm looking at the list of pretty much all the korean films that i've seen this year and i am very impressed with what i'm seeing as far as the women representation in these films not only do we have several that are directed by women but films like innocence diva this one the day i died baseball girl intruder okay madam knight of the undead uh even the recent semjin company english class i'm just like wow this is definitely uh a great year for women in cinema and i'm happy to report that this one one of my favorite korean actresses kimesu really really delivers and this one is going to be a bit um it's going to be a personal preference on how you guys like films because this is a very bleak gloomy police procedural film that has a lot of dark feelings in it and themes the acting is really through the roof i had a few issues with some of the story but overall it was extremely solid so let's get into the story real quick on the day i died as the career policewoman now detective hyunsoo played by kim heisu emotionally works through a looming divorce with her husband that's beginning to interfere with her career she takes up a cold case involving a reported suicide of a teenage girl named sejin played by nojongy whose body was never recovered hyunsoo's investigation takes her to an island where she learns the girl was being kept under surveillance pending an investigation into her father's illegal dealings island locals report the girl jumped from a tall rocky perch into the ocean before a typhoon came and likely washed her out to sea but as hunsu's investigation continues she discovers multiple anomalies within the evidence that leads her down several new lines of inquisition she begins to suspect that greater secrets lie beyond this seemingly simple suicide case as a local or even state level conspiracy to conceal secrets becomes more and more of a possibility with pressure to close the case and an ever growing sense of isolation and despair as hyunsu repositions herself within a world now alone kyunsu begins to feel a deep connection with the teen victim and it takes her one step closer to solving the case so like i said this one is very gloomy and it begins much in the same way this film really reminded me completely different setting and genre but the same feeling and vibe as i got with ad astra if you guys saw that one with brad pitt a lot of that film dealt with a lot of uh depression isolation feeling of loneliness or lack of self-worth and i feel like this movie really begins on that exact same tone as the actress kim asu who plays the detective in this one is working through a very rough divorce with her husband and it's really you know similar inner monologue as you know she's looking out a window to begin this whole investigative case so it sets the tone really quick for how this movie's gonna go and dealing with the teen suicide you know just subject matter you couldn't ask for a darker subject but uh the actress is so reliable and she really just plowed it through and really delivered on so many levels and i was really really satisfied with her performance and like i said i'm a big kim heisu fan i've got a lot of reviews on my channel i'll put some in the description box below of other films you can check out another great representation from a female director this year this one was directed by park g1 and she really stacked her cast with just professional more i would say veteran actresses here in korea again just wow so many uh women powerful roles in this film very impressive just on that front alone because it is very rare at least in my experience to see a film like this where you have a woman detective who's really going through the steps that you would normally see with a like male dominated detectives going through kind of a homicide or you know potential homicide type case when there's a death on the line so it was really cool to see um she really plays the detective role really well if not just a little bit uh bleak so that's just a tonal thing some of you guys are gonna know well probably everyone is going to know uh the one of the supporting actresses in this one ee jong-un she was the maiden parasite who was discovered i think on a local stage play here in korea so a big uh part for her is great to see her in another film after parasite and she plays one of the local villagers in this island and she doesn't speak at all on this one so very similar to something like uin's performance in voice of silence blew me away just how good of a performance it was for really no lines of dialogue just incredible what these actors here in korea are able to do also the girl who actually plays the suicide victim or the supposed suicide victim in this film i've never seen her before her name is no jung-ee and i was really actually surprised just with the concept of this story going in because scene one of the film you know that there was a suicide you're like okay she's dead but there is a lot of back story within the investigation and we do get to see this actress quite a bit in the film and she again like the other leads does an amazing job as the the young teen she's dealing with a lot of problems her father is involved with all of this crime investigation and they're putting her on this island to monitor her because they think perhaps that she's got something more to offer the case and that was my main point of contention with this film and i that could be a cultural thing because i could not square in my mind how they could put a 19 year old her from the city her she's got her parents were divorced she's got a new mom who's out of the picture and so it was just her dad her brother's in jail and they think she's got more to offer so they take her to this island house when they put in all of these cctv cameras in the house and i was just like are they charging her with the crime how can they sort of take away her freedoms like this i'm not a law expert here in korea but that was a little bit strange to me so i hope someone somewhere can enlighten me on just what the what the law is behind this and is this a regular practice probably not but uh it was very hard to accept for me and that was really the my main point of contention with the film other than that i for one do not mind a dark tone and so for this one for me it was a great police procedural film anchored by incredible performances so it is up there with one of the better korean films that i've seen this year with that minor story point aside because throughout this entire police procedural which was very um it was a bit more quiet than you're used to seeing in korean films it wasn't people breaking down doors and chasing after suspects really was more methodical and it was tight though because i was extremely curious on how things were unfolding and i started suspecting different suspects like this person is a little bit strange okay no it's this person and so it really had me guessing um how the mystery was gonna play out and unfold and you know just where the case was gonna go so that is a very strong sign for a great police procedural so i'm gonna have to rate this movie an eight out of ten the performances blew me away some of the photography on the island with the capes and the water coming in it was beautiful so i was a little bit surprised seeing the warner brothers logo at the beginning so this might have been one of the final uh korea warner brothers productions uh maybe someone can correct me in the comments below but let me know what you guys think of the day i died or if it's something you're looking forward to when it does come out again thanks again for watching i'm tyler at the movie beat please like and subscribe if you want to see more like this and if you enjoy the content until next time keep watching movies you
