Grocery Shopping at Kroger's Are the Prices any better? Using the Kroger App on your iPhone

welcome back to the retirement Groove my name is Ron I'm your host in today's video I'm going to go grocery shopping again but this time I'm going to go to Kroger's instead of Walmart and do some comparison shopping over there um my day is kind of full this morning I got several places to go besides grocery shopping I've got to go to the uh library and drop off some photographs for the art display over there that I'm going to enter and then I have to go by and see my parents uh this morning for a little while before I go grocery shopping and uh yeah I just got all kinds of stuff to do on this Saturday but before I go to Kroger's okay I have to go over and uh visit with my parents a little bit this morning I go over there twice a week uh usually on Wednesdays and Sundays but uh this week I'm going over on Saturday because I plan on taking the kayak out tomorrow morning to do some photography from kayak so I'm going over today to visit them and I just texted her and asked them if she wanted me to bring a Bojangles biscuits over but she hasn't answered me so I may have to call her let me call my mom and see if she wants me to bring over some Bojangle biscuits so here we go hi honey do you want biscuits no we we we we get we got our own biscuits now we don't go to the store to get biscuits anymore okay well I'm on I'm on I'm on my way over all right honeye byee so you heard me I just called her to ask if she wanted biscuits so she said no now one of the things I did this morning uh before I go to Kroger's is I downloaded the Kroger app and I've heard my mom talk about it several times I thought okay I'll check this out uh I'm trying to save some money going into retirement and especially on our grocery bill uh our grocery bill can be up there it's probably close to the for the two of us about $650 to $700 a month uh it'd be nice if I could cut that down a couple hundred doll and uh I already noticed some savings at Kroger's on their app this morning they have weekly sale ads I'm not too sure how to use that app yet but uh I'm going to learn I think we've always had a Kroger Plus Card which is their reward reward card and I had to talk to them this morning to get it linked with my online account so they're both in the same place cuz sometimes you might have to use your card uh instead of using your phone app or whatever I don't even know how that works I'm going to figure it all out but uh anyways I I did get it all set up this morning and I I plan on going to Kroger's and what I'm going to do is I'm going to take you along with me I'm going to put the camera on the buggy and we're going to walk through the Kroger store and do some price comparison uh based on my grocery shopping from last week at Walmart now Walmart now Walmart has been our go-to grocery store for years and and a lot of reasons behind that is the on the some of the paper good stuff cat food things like that there have always been cheaper uh regular everyday stuff that we buy like Oreo cookies and uh chips and cereal things like that uh they've always been cheaper but uh I want to try something different kind of want to get away from Walmart a little bit for our grocery shopping and kind of diversify when I retire I'm going to change my grocery shopping habits I do most of the grocery shopping at the house sometimes my wife will go with me but I'm going to change some of my habits and I'm going to not grocery shop on Fridays Saturdays or Sundays I'm going to try to do my grocery shopping uh when I retire in December on Mondays and Tuesdays I feel like the stores are less crowded and from what I hear from friends of mine Monday is kind of like senior citizen grocery shopping day well that's me I'm a senior citizen now now one of the things I did this week in preparation uh after talking to to a uh Insurance advisor for Medicare I went ahead and I signed up for Medicare part A now what uh what I understood was it's free I probably should have done it at 65 I'm really surprised that my corporate uh headquarters didn't make me do it is what he said but um I'm I'm 66 I'm almost 67 I'll be 67 in October so I went ahead and signed up for Medicare part A this week I've already been been approved I already got my letter I already got my number I just haven't got the card in the mail yet so I'm all squared away with that and the next thing I'm going to be looking for is a supplemental insurance plan uh probably a group uh group Plan G I guess they call it and then I'm also going to have to look for a drug plan but uh that's coming later this week one of the other things I did was I took the time and I downloaded my uh social security statement for the quarter ending June the 30th to see how much I had uh in benefits coming and also I downloaded a a statement from my 401k kind of get an idea where my 401k stands how much money's in there and um yeah I think I did I downloaded um yeah I downloaded that that's what I did so I'm kind of looking at the 401K and the social security statement trying to figure out if I'm going to start taking benefits from my 401k or not t all this crazy stuu okay here we are in Kroger's of Crossville Tennessee my first time shopping here in a long time I have my Kroger's app on my phone so we're going to see how this goes today well I'm not sure how these coupons and this app works but these riy staks are $12.99 a lound but they're supposed to be on sale for 9.99 a pound with the clip C coupon that's on my app I might have to get some help uh when I check out today with this new app so we're going to try one of their rotisserie chickens at $8.99 says it's on sale need some uh turkey sandwich turkey meat what's this 8.83 lbs of turkey breast for 9.95 like to have me some roast [Music] beef I get some roast beef here at the delices well just like a couple weeks ago I forgot my pen so I got to kind of fudge through this found a sail plier up front Okay anything for you that'll do me all you have a great day thank you even you yep I working appreciate it you too thanks was that roast beef uh yes you want some too was that roast beef uh yes what kind was it that would be our for B head it's I have a half pound okay how you want SCE just like she got it really good thank you uh it's between a half and 7 you know it's all good anything else for you today that's all thank you all right all right you have a great day thank you you wel coordinator please Che the application thank you have a good day good week so that was a half a pound of Bo's head roast beef London broal $7.50 it's $15 a pound but that boy head stuff is really good let's see if we can find some bread here so I'm going to get a loaf of um Italian bread now it's $2 here and at Walmart it's $1 so it's a little bit different but uh in here I can't I don't seem to be able to get it sliced here so that's [Music] okay now see if we can find these uh was that 18 oz of blueberries no it's 6 oz of blueberries so it's not right so my wife likes blueberries I think these are the wrong kind put the organic these are organic don't want these want the ones that are on sale I believe they're over here watch yeah 9 oz look confusing here 18 oz of blueberries here they are 349 for 18 Oz that's right so these are 18 oz of blueberries okay for $3.49 and they're in my app okay so what else we got this going to take me a while Kroger's water on sale I think that's in my on the app now we got to find some Tomatoes my wife wanted some Tomatoes Granger County Tomatoes or local grown Tennessee Tomatoes if I can find them and we get some bananas that's on the list bananas are 55 cents a pound this week so we only eat about three or four bananas at the house so I don't get a whole lot but these are chaita bananas so the tomatoes I'm looking for are Granger County tomatoes for $169 a pound so I'm going to get my wife uh she likes tomatoes so do I I like tomatoes too so we're going to get a couple tomatoes at $169 a pound these are locally grown uh well not locally but in Tennessee Okay Granger County tomatoes so I don't weigh those I just get a couple of them they're on sale so it doesn't really matter hey I believe that's all the produce okay we're going to go on with our regular store shopping looking for the uh bacon here it is Smithfield bacon um this is thick cut management call 103 management 103 so it's 12 oz of Smithfield Custom Service to 102 please customer service to 102 double thick double smoked for 3.99 with the clip coupon so got that let's see there were some pork ribs somewhere here they are I think this is them pork back ribs well big uh 2.99 a pound fatty I don't think I'll get those this time a going to get the pork ribs they look kind of these look kind of fatty so let's go over here and see what we got in this section so you got these uh filet tenderloin fillets uh for $5 on sale I think yeah uh we used to get those have them for a small meal now I'm looking for some hamburger see where is that hamburger in my app uh Krueger 80% lean for $3.99 well I found the lean ground beef um for $3.99 let's see how that works too this app it's a little confusing to me so I think we're done with the meat part Let's uh let's start down this other aisles we got things all messed up in this store it's not like Walmart I'm going to have to get used to these aisles that's the problem with going to different stores um I don't think I want anything down there that's Asian food uh vegetables beans I don't need anything down there oops I done just start right down this aisle this is mostly soup and pasta I do need some Ragu though that's on the list we get the marinara Ru marinara ru see now the rag goo is a little more expensive here compared to uh Walmart so um they have the traditional let's just get the traditional I don't need the marinara so it is259 for this 24 o jar and over at Walmart I think it's like about I don't know I want to say it's about $2 so it's a little more expensive here okay we are in the chip AIS now and we get some Cheetos right here party size a little bit more expensive 649 I think it's 5.98 at Walmart this is a short list for me here we are the Oreo cookies now that was on um my list 18 what size is that 18 mostly snacks down here don't need anything in this area anyway so far what I'm finding is some of the prices are a little bit higher at um here than they are compared to what I'm used to at Walmart now we'll get some different pict pickles this week let's see what they got so an interesting thing uh that I was watching on T on YouTube the other day was about the uh Mount Olive um pickles how they're made and we usually get the uh kosher um kosher baby deals but I think I'm going to try something different this week uh kosher baby deals with sea salt um let's get the kosher deal Spears with sea salt get turned around here got plenty of bread I don't need any I got some Italian bread in the bakery so far it's pretty easy walking to the store with the camera mounted to the buggy nobody really notices it this is my third time doing this so I feel a little more comfortable doing it not quite as derous as I was the first time okay we needed some olive oil so let's see what they got here uh something in an off brand all kinds of oil these days avocado oil and here's olive oil over here the other side call 101 management 101 Pompei they have robust olive oil smooth olive oil Kroger that's what I want extra virgin olive oil Kroger's $7.99 for 16.9 oz of the Kroger brand of olive oil I'm trying to buy offbrand stuff that's just as good a lot of times these store brands I find are just as good as name brand stuff let let's walk on down here and see what else I need need some uh coffee somewhere find coffee someplace we don't need any sugar this week uh it's about the same price as uh Walmart I better get one anyways just to have an extra I don't like to run out so 319 for 4 lbs I believe it's about the same price at Walmart as it is here so the half CF is uh weekly digital deal hm weekly digital deal let's see what that is so I have to download something there's a Sean you have a call on 101 please Sean 101 what PA systems Loud Let's go over here and get some milk see how much the milk is whole milks $4.99 a gallon from Mayfields that's about the same price um the coffee mate is a little more expensive get the French vanilla zero sugar uh this is 429 so I need some stick butter we'll go over here and see what's in the kroer brand sweet cream butter I have a digital coupon here so I had to ask some employees for some help um okay so I've got everything on my list except for the um ice cream so we're going to get ice cream ice cream's right down here okay well I think I got everything on the list and that's what I said I was going to start doing we were going to start going by the list okay so wow think I'm go to the self checkout M I don't think Saturday's a good day to come in here so one thing they got here that Walmart used to have a long time ago was the self checkout line belts and um yeah they have them here but Walmart did away with theirs so I prefer to use the self checkout since uh I got my own bags with me my own shopping bags we're going to see how that's going to work out I'm not too sure what was going on that line but that girl weighed about some limes about five different times so okay here we go I'm try this out and see how it works [Music] my okay [Music] okay that was something now when I get home I'm going to pull out the receipt okay and look at the the discounts that I got and see what the benefit was now the total bill was $138 now it's a little bit cheaper than what I spend at Walmart but uh I guess on overall average if you take into account the coupons you're getting the digital coupons at Kroger's it might be cheaper to grocery shop here at Kroger's so I may have to try it another week and see if our grocery bill goes down and it will take definitely take a little bit of time to get used to shopping at Kroger and not at Walmart anymore but overall it was a pretty pleasant experience but I might want to pick a different day of the week uh to come here only because it was really busy really busy in there today right [Music]
