23 years later multiple Generations have felt the effects of those attacks some First Responders were already working and some were inspired to joined because of them your Julius Evans has a closer look at the 911 effect First Responders in the area tell me it's a day they will never ignore no matter their length of experience serving on the front lines remembering the sacrifices on September 11 reminds them of what their job is truly about it was a surreal experience even for me as an y old sergeant Daniel Smith with North Augusta Public Safety says 911 reminds him of why he continues to serve his community we do our job every day we come in with the attitude of remembering that sacrifice and the ones of us that were alive long enough to remember what happened remind the younger generation of uh what this job May demand of us for the new generation they say the attacks taught them what it really means to be in that position I think it's important to to realize that uh whoever you're protecting or or saving um they have families as well and so you would they would do the same thing for you the 9/11 attacks claim the lives of nearly 3,000 people and more than 300 firefighters died on that day First Responders here say it's a constant reminder of what they're called to do a humble reminder of the risk that we might have to take doing this job we may have to give our lives for people and we all have to do our job every day with that understanding Smith says it's a lesson he hopes every generation continues to learn not for the pain but for what came after I urge everyone to remember the sacrifice of that day and the tragedy that it was for our country and the togetherness that we felt after that First Responders in the area say the memories of 9/11 helped them prepare for the worst they're training is constant and so is the sacrifice
