Co has been rough on us as a nation in fact on the whole world children suffered from covid especially you know the isolation of the lockdowns and the disruption of schooling Contracting this illness could be severe at times in children prevention is the best medicine I'm jabran atwi uh I'm a physician I have been a pediatrician for about 30 years Co is very disruptive because um there is a segment of the population the very young those who are immunosuppressed and those with underlying illnesses like diabetes obesity lung disease or various chronic diseases once a child catches covid in their family there will be isolation from the grandparents the parents may not be able to go to work because the child has to stay home and um it's like a domino effect we had a um a an impressive response from parents who wanted to contribute to advancing medicine and making the vaccine available to everyone and that was heartwarming to all of us my name is Peter Johnston I am a pastor in Lafayette Louisiana and uh we have seven kids four of which are enrolled in hummingbird study the hummingbird study is a great opportunity to uh participate in science to contribute to medical research the kids are are interested in study and some of the different things that they uh get and and allow them to think about it so for example the uh covid stuffed animal has been a a hit in the household U not only because it's fun but because it gives us an opportunity to talk about what it is that we're doing well the kids at times were far more excited than the parents and they're the one who drove the parents to enjoy the study and um many many kids um like the idea of uh being a first uh in exploring something or discovering something or contributing to a new discovery the first thing that we do is we make sure we get the consent of the parent we make sure we answer all questions before we start any of the study procedures um and then from there we'll go into getting um kind of a background on the participant we'll get their medical history um we'll make sure they're comfortable with everything that we're doing and then we go in we get a few Labs um and from getting the labs we go into the vaccination part of the visit um and then afterwards we keep them here for 30 minutes on site just to make sure they're feeling okay they're still doing well um and then we kind of explain the following steps of the next visits the volunteer Spirit and the interest in uh contributing to a good cause is still alive and well we still are U recruiting more families to join us in the study and uh hoping to reach our goal
