Intro is Matt Luke exposing Clemson's poor offensive coaching that's what we're talking about today we're going to Dive Right In welcome to Clemson football live I am so glad you're here on this beautiful March the 7th Thursday morning the week is almost over well for us nineo FS uh but I'm glad you're here if you like what I'm doing if you like talking Clemson football also talk about other college football teams if you like college football I hope you'll subscribe it is free I do appreciate it drop a comment in the comment section let me know that you're here that you're visiting so Matt Luke let's talk about this one of the one of the great things about spring practice right now is seeing the Freshman you know the early enroles everybody's happy about it Bron Wesco Sammy Brown Etc but people are buzzing about Matt Luke they're they're talking about Matt Luke his immediate effect on the offensive line now I'm going to quote a comment that was made uh by one of his offensive linemen and it was Marcus Tate now Marcus Tate he's he's a veteran at Clemson and I'm going to read what he said about um about Matt Luke quoting Marcus Tate my initial impr of him was wow it was different and for me I love different I love change and just having a different energy come into the room he demands Excellence out of us and that was his message okay I'm going to skip on down to a couple of more comments that he made and I think that this is really really key for Us Clemson fans and I cannot find it now Marcus Tate talks about how Matt Luke immediately told them said Hey listen you've got to have your eyes in the right place and for all of us who's thinking about that it's like well yeah we know but offensive linemen they have a very very tough job it's a thankless job in a lot of ways right and so we talk about footwork but and there's communication there's keeping your eyes looking in the proper places to see where you need to pick up uh pick up the pressure Etc but people are talking about the instant change that Matt Luke has had okay and that he's continuing to have I have said let's tempor our expectations for Matt Luke okay let's not expect him to fix every little thing uh that's that's been going on over the past few years I'm gonna get into that just a second got Thomas Mills in here hey Brian good to catch you watching from Germany well uh I I think the proper German uh welcome is velman I could be wrong I'm glad you're here Thomas thank you so much for watching the Matt Lukes Experience show so let's dive into why is Matt Luke already having such an incredible influence on the team well let's dive into Matt Luke so you have to understand that when you bring in someone who is this experienced a guy who has over 20 years of coaching under his belt and then that coaching is an incredible experience remember the last team he coached for was the 2021 National Championship Georgia Bulldogs team who was the offensive coordinator for that team it was Todd monin who in my opinion is one of the brightest Minds in football of course Todd monin left last year he was with the with the Baltimore Ravens they did quite well and you got to think about Matt Luke coming from that team with someone who was brilliant experienced just Cutting Edge very dominant very brilliant like Todd monin and then going into the offensive coaching room with Clemson now I'm not trying to be mean here and let me preface this one more time and some of you going to see this this just pessimistic uh have some you know have some Faith Brion folks I I am having faith here I'm saying that Matt Luke is I'm F I'm I'm flipping out that he's here finally have some experience on the offensive side of the ball this is good news but imagine him in his first coaching meeting you know it's three weeks roughly before the gator ball and he's sitting there and he's just trying to get to know the guys he's going to be working with and so he looks over at this guy we'll keep names out of it he goes oh man it's it's nice to meet you and they're like exchanging pleasantries he's like so uh tell me tell me about your career uh you know how how you got into coaching and you know what's been going on with you and this this guy looks at Matt Luke Matt Luke a guy who as I said has over 20 years of of of coaching experience and the team he just left he took some time off to be with his family and then he decided was okay to come back into the game but the last team he was with won the National Championship with Todd moning Todd monin as their OC and some Brilliant Minds on the Georgia offensive uh coaching staff so he looks at this guy across the table when he's like so tell me your story well yeah I I played here at Clemson yeah oh wow yeah I heard that so so what happened after that well I went to the NFL man that's awesome you know a lot of players don't make the NFL that's something to be proud of and yeah well then tell me about your coaching experience oh this is my first coaching job okay oh oh all right well you know that's that's a blessing then he goes to the next guy tell me about your experience same thing went I played here at Clemson that's great oh what happened oh I went to the NFL wow both of you went to the that's good tell me about your coaching experience oh this is my first coaching job Matt Luke walks out his first practice and this is something he would never admit if you put a TV Camera in front of him and stuck a microphone and said hey tell me what you think about this coaching staff folks are we so dull and naive to think he would actually tell the truth but I bet you if you could go into the halls of Matt Luke's mind after that first practice and then the other coaches that are that are on Clemson's offense who yeah yeah they might have been coaching for a little while but never at this level and he goes this is why why their offense has Offensive Line fell apart he is the most senior offensive coach that they have now this is a good thing we need that experience at Clemson but could it be that the very re reason that Tyler Grisham was not fired was because dbos Sweeny was going to dot the eyes and cross the te's get all of his ducks in a row that if the offensive line was the reason that the wide receivers are not performing at an optimal level he was he was going to he was going to address that immediately and give Tyler some more time okay so Matt Luke's very presence exposes the poor coaching and the poor habits of past recent coaches and current coaches list stab into this more so let's talk about the offensive line just just remember the offensive line is the base for the success of the offense the passing game let's talk about the passing game how it affects it does quarterback have have enough time to pass the ball does he have enough time to make the reads for the wide receivers this would be something that Tyler Grisham could very well argue and say hey my guys they don't have a time to complete their routes the play's already breaking down Kate's having to scramble because the offensive line play is just is just so questionable this is an offensive line that over the past two years gave up over 28 sacks or at least 28 sacks per season now I know we had some inexperienced guys last year and blah blah blah but I'm telling you it wasn't going to get any better than this year it was not going to improve this year so the offensive line affects that greatly how comfortable a quarterback can stand in the pock pocket what about the running game are you giving the running back reasonable running Lanes to execute your assignment think about Michigan this year Michigan is one of the main reasons it's one of the main reasons that they their offensive line is one of the main reasons they won a national championship what against Penn State they didn't run the they didn't throw the ball the entire second half correct me if I'm wrong I want to say they never threw the ball the entire second half won the ball game an offensive line is important so if an offensive line is terrible sure it's going to majorly affect your rushing and your passing game it also gives you the confidence if it's fourth down and one it's at the 50 you have a great offensive line you're going for it because you're quite confident you're going to get it it's fourth down and goal at the one you're going for it because you're confident in your offensive line it all makes sense right but how his presence is exposing the poor coaching on the offensive side of the ball goes even deeper than that let's talk about Kade kumnick you're like Kate's the quarterback yes Kate kumnick first he's played for two coordinator two different coordinators in his first two years this is one of the most volatile times in recent Clemson history he was just a starter this year and not everyone is Trevor Lawrence okay so a lot of people who wants to talk about how K you know he doesn't look like he's comfortable in the pocket and he's not disciplined to stand in the the pocket the very same people who's saying that about him they're not disciplined enough to pass up an extra slice of cake at dinner while this guy needs to be disciplined standing in a rarely existent pocket while a defensive player who eats sleeps breeds working out just to be able to hit K clubnet and try to kill him and you want to talk about he needs to be more disciplined in a pocket that rarely exists I mean come on now so the poor offensive coaching over the past few years has really effect affected the ability of Cade to be able to go out and perform and in those last few years of calwell it didn't look too good either I mean let's be honest with ourselves it did not look that good I'm I appreciate what Robbie Caldwell done during those championships but I'm just telling you it did not look good I don't know what the issue was there I don't know what was going on I'm going be very careful to say anything about him because he has he did very well for Clemson with that said the past two years absolutely it was just it was just bad next the wide receivers you are right the wide receivers cannot go through their progressions if the if the offensive line is trash if the offensive line is playing like crap and by the way we've recruited some a lot of four stars long four and what at least one five star on the offensive line that we have right now just the development has not been there folks and so when you look at the wide receivers you go yes that makes sense the play is breaking down kage's having to get out of the pocket now guys are having to try to figure out where to get open within within uh the secondary I get it I get it here's where Matt Luke exposes coaching he Expos he exposes especially Wide receivers on the wide receiver side the development of the wide receivers you're like what do you mean the development of the wide receivers the offensive line cannot make a wide receiver go out there and catch a wide open pass that they just dropped the offensive line cannot go to a wide receiver and make him throw a block downfield dbos Sweeny said that K kumnick threw nine interceptions last year only four of them were on him that means five of them were on was on someone else that someone else would be wide receivers and and wide receiver youu is now wide receiver Community College go watch the the film of Mike Williams from eight years ago go and watch t Higgins these guys literally came in and you're like those guys were just brilliant Brian how how dare you compare our current guys to those guys I'm sorry that's when we were incredible those guys went out and beat up defensive backs to get the football they enjoyed beating up and besting defensive backs they had a field day Justin Ross when he was healthy bested them Amari Rogers would get physical Hunter rro would adjust his body midair while he was falling to catch the football my point in all of this is that our wide receivers it's not there it it it is not there and so Matt Luke's very presence is exposing or let me rephrase that will expose whether the offensive the offensive line play has actually affected the wide receivers that bad but once again I go back to the offensive line can't make wide receivers throw blocks downfield they can't make them uh catch passes that wideopen passes that they dropped they can't make them do that and then you step back and you look at the recent or the past coaches that we've had at Clemson whether it's brinon streer who's a Clemson man uh uh Tyler Grisham is a Clemson man I know he's current but he's a Clemson man uh Thomas Austin who they just let go he's a Clemson man I don't like to see these guys have to be fired but I think with Thomas Austin Brandon streer and I know they're gone and then Tyler grisham's here Tyler Grisham is a good recruiter the problem is coaching is multi-dimensional you can't just be good at one thing and not good at the other you have to be good at all of it that's why they pay them so much money and it really that is you spay you pay for a specialty it makes sense if a person is a specialist you pay for it and you should but two of those guys I would say all three of them it's too much too quick could Brandon streer end up being a really good offensive coordinator sure could Thomas Austin become an incredible offensive line coach absolutely could Tyler Grisham learn from the era of his ways and get and get better absolutely and here's here's the thing too folks again Thomas Austin was only at Georgia State for what two years Tyler Grisham has been at Clemson the entire time you have to get more experience and you have to have good experience with really good people like Matt Luke pouring into you a great question from Tyler Grisham DP right here I wonder if Matt can help develop Tyler or if it's best to just part ways see that's a great question DP because I have said this if you go uh one of sween's great examples of people not liking his first- time H or the you know inexperienced uh hires is Tony Elliott he says well people wouldn't really happy when I hired Tony but we saw how Tony turned out which I pump the brakes on that one but Tony had a group of people around him who whether it was on the defensive side of the ball or or even on the offensive side of the ball who had been around the game for a long time so they could come in and kind of disciple him and kind of lead him and train him and go hey I know that I know that looks like a good idea but I used to think that was a good idea too when I first started coaching then I had to learn it it's it's not going to work out like like you think it is and Jeff Scott plus Tony Elliott that was an incredible combination together any weakness one had the other one complimented and and that's when you saw Clemson play their best best ball was when those two guys were together so Jeff Scott and I see you TR it Graves you're you're you're right Jeff Scott was a was a big player there but to address the question this is actually one of the points that I want to make maybe Matt Luke coming in and looking at these guys and going hey hey the last team I coached for won the National Championship just a few years ago they won it twice in a row last year they were three points away from being back in the college football playoff you we have to play them the very first ball game of the year they ran a tight ship I was part of that tight ship and I can guide you I can help you maybe that's one of the reasons that Sweeny brought him in is so he can challenge Tyler Grisham and say hey that's something special that I saw in you Tyler talking about Sweeny to Tyler it needs to be minded out of you it needs to be developed although Matt Luke is the offensive line coach he's been around the game he's coached with much better coaches than anyone including Garrett Riley on the entire Clemson offensive staff so right now if you gave me the chance for Todd monin or Garrett Riley to let I'm I'm already going Todd monin runs our offense at Clemson it would be not in day it really would be as long as he has full full rign and he can help coach whoever he has to coach uh get into coach would be great now the thing the you know I've criticized Sweeny so if you if you do something great I'm going to give you credit if you do something bad I'm going to say that was bad as as part of troubleshooting just pointing out a problem and not offering a solution is doesn't make you smart makes you p a pessimist I'm a realist I love my Tigers I appreciate what sween's done he's given too many people at one time a firsttime coaching hire opportunity in the same room he is learning from his mistakes he hired Garrett Riley he hired Matt Luke which is a big deal I'm very happy about that I'm really excited that Matt Luke is here still need to give him time to get some things fixed but with that said Sweeny is making the Right Moves I wish he he would make he would have made them a little quicker but you know what we live we learn and as he as long as he continues to learn and make the proper adjustments we'll be okay I don't think the 20 24 season is going to be that season that you see everything come together right off the bat because there there are some really bad habits that's having to be unlearned unlearned from Clemson and mad Luke has been he's part of that Kade kumnick Kate kumnick has picked up some bad habits why trying to create great plays trying to create success when the offensive Line's not blocking well when the white receivers can't get open when the wide receivers are dropping wide open passes or when the wide receivers aren't fighting for just your average contested pass between them and a Def and a division one defensive back so we can all get mad at Cade and say we need him to settle down and this that and the other but can we can we really do that when the offensive line hasn't been producing when the wide receivers aren't doing what they should do can we really completely be angry at the wide receivers when the offensive line has been suspect suspect or average at best can notice how if one thing is off other things they're off what is it like if you sprang your ankle it messes it can mess up your knee and or if you mess up your knee it can mess up your help you see how that how it triggers one other thing boom boom boom boom boom that's what's happening here having someone like Matt Luke coming in it's great because of the experience but it it immediately exposes the inexperienced coach who has not been developed themselves and they were handed the keys to a Ferrari and so yes I believe he's exposing the coaching just by his presence being there just by his intensity listen to Marcus Tate talking about it Marcus Tate was like hey he's telling us Hey look look look y'all are thinking too much or Marcus Tate said that he was thinking too much that his group was thinking too much the offensive line they're thinking too much we need to have our eyes in the in the right place and Coach Luke demands Excellence now every coach demands Excellence but he's modeling it because he has the proper experience and a lot of once again when I talk about Brandon streer I talk about Thomas Austin I talk about uh Tyler Grisham I even talk about CJ Spiller to a point I'm talking about Clemson guys that I've pulled for and I have respect for because they're Clemson men but a lot of these guys especially the last three I named out Austin Grisham and somewhat Spiller they've never been outside of Clemson and coached with a group of coaches who were extremely experienced they really haven't and so part of that you can't blame them for and so I am just um I'm hoping that him Expo just being there exposing what's going on in the coaching staff and what's been going on over the past it's not been the past few years it's it's probably been since the 2020 season Trevor Trevor and Travis etn and and uh Amari Rogers and guys like them they were so good it covered up some of the poor coaching I know Thomas aluson was only there for a few years but I'm telling you that there were some bore habits that started around 2020 heavily 2020 you might even argue 2019 some complacency started to fall in because they just beat Alabama by four touchdowns in Santa Clara for the national championship okay but over the past good four years we've seen Clemson's offense go it's not the transfer portal if the transfer portal was the issue guess what the defense would have fallen apart as well it would have so there goes that argument but Matt Luke he is exposing the poor coaching the lack of experience hopefully as DP pointed out maybe he can help challenge some of these young coaches and say hey this is the way this is not the way try this yes he's the o line coach but Matt Luke has way more experience than all of them put together maybe I know he has more experience overall than Garrett Riley I won't say all to including Garrett Ry with all together with Grisham Spiller Etc but you get what I'm saying he has he has almost more experience than everybody put together on the Clemson offensive side go through some quick Comments comments uh trck Graves says y'all will never learn the day Jeff Scott left Clemson everything went to crap Jeff Scott would would get back with the receivers this team would would be unbe beatable we would be back U I'd love to see Jeff Scott back um I would like to see Tyler gishan go to a recruiting role if he would be willing to do that I very well doubt it but Jeff Scott doesn't seem to be want to get back into coaching at least right now I'd love to have him back yansy Chapman's in here good morning Brian I agree Jeff Scott needs to be the wide the receivers coach if nothing else right now I just really believe him and Riley would be great together that would be a really good combination I think especially if they just let go uh let loose and and if Matt Luke can just get the offensive line to just play in solid they don't have to be the world's best offensive line right off the bat if they can just get playing get to play in solid that could be the difference in winning two extra games or losing two extra games Eric a good friend of mine I think the Clemson offensive line would be more successful if they made more phone calls per day folks I used to work with him and this is a great inside joke thank you so uh uh it's a fantastic joke and made me laugh Jonathan Benton uh not to be a contrarian but I'm not certain Jeff Scott is the panasia I don't know is some people think he would be Maybe not maybe not maybe we're putting too much on Scott hey maybe Scott needs Elliott as much as Elliot needed Scott we don't know folks tell me what you think leave it in the comments section below am I right Am I Wrong do you agree with me what what is it what are you thinking what do you see and here's what the only thing I'm going to ask you just be specific and Trust Dabo is
