what you just heard from desun he says his confidence isn't swayed there's a lot that they've got to figure out though and we saw how good that defense was going up against him but what was wrong with him tonight he looked like a quarterback deer in headlights it was almost the game was almost like too big for him I I was surprised to be quite honest I I thought going into this game they're playing at home they're playing against a Dallas Cowboy team that basically can't run the football cuz they didn't you know didn't acquire a runner Ezekiel Elliot not the same guy he was and and Dallas beat him all three phases and deshun Watson uh you know when you look at what he did today turned the ball over he just looked he didn't look poised at at all in this game he looked like a rookie quarterback and and now he's got to fix it he owned it he said this is one game which is correct it's one game but you cannot let this continue to look like this or they're going to be in trouble six acts two interceptions for him today he was in a ton of trouble meanwhile on the other side of things Dak Prescott got paid this morning in that four-year extension what impressed you the most about what you saw from Dak in this game well when you think about Dak he had a really outstanding year last year and uh he continued to show that this year and I and in this game and I thought going into this game they did a great job of really move in the pocket early in other words they rolled him out at time so he could get some quick throws he always stayed ahead of the chains he made a couple big throws when he needed to but he was he was very poised in this game he looked like the guy that they paid you know you just paid me I'm going to show you why you paid me right and I thought the Dallas Cowboys this was one of their better games playing against the number one defense in the National Football League on the road this was a big win for the Dallas Cowboys did not look like the number one defense today now did it Dak did look like he deserved that money and that extension coach hanging out with us you guys when I named rust the starter how comfortable I was with both quarterbacks and so if that is true why not be really comfortable with playing Justin under the circumstances with Russ being in less than IDEAL Physical shape and so that was a thought process it wasn't a lot of discussion Russ was very supportive today and that was appreciated but we went with Justin man I'm glad we got two real capable quarterbacks as I've mentioned before coach can you speak more about his resiliency throughout the game talking about Justin fi man Justin is you know as I've gotten to know him man he is a real steady Eddie man um he's not overly talkative man but he's got a steady strong demeaner um and just being in stadium with them man some of the things that I've seen through team development were confirmed it's just good to to to be able to communicate with a guy when things get thick and you see the Clear Eyes uh he's there um he's solid as a rock and I think uh his play and and and thus our play is kind of reflective of that did you look at this as another big opportunity show the staff maybe I should be the starter I go I mean to be honest I'm not even worried about that you know I just came in wanting a win and uh I'm glad that we're leaving here with the win so um in terms of who's starting who's not all I want to do is win at the end of the day so um yeah I'm I'm really not even you know going to get into all that you know who I want to start at the end of the day I'm I came here to win no matter if if I was going to throw for 300 yards 100 yards no yards like I came here to Wi so um that's the only uh Focus I have in the NFL a win is a win is a win and it's hard week one for a rookie quarterback to start especially the top overall pick that was the case for cadb Williams Bears defense led to the win CB 14 of 23 just 93 yards but becomes the first top pick quarterback to win their opener since David Carr back in 2002 and he knows next week will hopefully be better didn't perform the way that I wanted to um I missed a few passes that I I normally don't miss all of these other things and so um I think there's small things that always lead up to big things uh make things you know make those moments and things like that a lot bigger um they make games a lot closer um you know just just to small things whether it's a you know a pass play that I had to to um DeAndre Swift and the flat um that I missed a little bit in front of him um you know whether it's you know missing DJ a little bit on that on that in route on the backside um a little bit um right in front of him um you know all these all these small moments that happen throughout the game um that you know felt like I was in the right place the right time and and and I would say I was seeing it well um just missed and and misfired um and and and placing the ball where I wanted to um you know you complete a few of those um Dre down the sideline on the left sideline uh they they end up going cover zero um you know end up missing him on a on a different page and things like that so I think that was the you know the name of the game for today for the offense has just not been on the same page passing wise and then you know Run game um you know we'll we'll be better um obviously you know it's great to get this first win um and uh you know we're all excited went into the locker room celebrate I sat down enjoyed the moment um and just watching all the guys celebrate understand that I need to be better I will be better and then uh you know um you know just taking in the first win um it's it's unbelievable all right her Edwards back with us on Sports Center we just heard from number one overall pick Caleb Williams there and he said the word miss a lot because that was kind of the story of the game you were shocked by his performance why I I really was I I thought he would perform better than what we witnessed today and I think going forward uh hopefully he he's learned a valuable lesson that this is the NFL uh it's not college football um I thought when uh things got a little bit tough on him he hurried his process he didn't stay true to playing inside the pocket he became the guy we had seen in college at times and wanted to freelance and and move around some and try to make plays and I think going forward he's going to learn a lesson this is the NFL and everybody's good in the NFL and he has a lot of talent I I think he'll get better but this caught me by surprise to be quite honest I I thought with him being the quarterback in Chicago now with the offensive um Talent they have around him that this would have looked a lot different but I have to realize he's a rookie quarterback 93 yards for the rookie quarterback but a win nonetheless won what I you know my message to the players you know they gave me the Gatorade shower and things like that but you know without them I'm nothing so and I I made sure they knew that like they crossed the white lines I always talk about empowering the players to go out there and play I always talk about awareness really being the number one thing and and those guys taking ownerships so you know all the praise goes to those guys and they they did a a great job not talking about no contracts talks don't ask me no questions that's done by Friday so no more questions with that um it's obvious just turnovers and you know we got to got to get first downs and move move the ball it didn't look like you were targeted much down the field is that an indication of you just not being in training camp and and able to get that in the game plan or you weren't able to or was that just uh I don't know you got to ask Zack on that I don't know I feel like we we always start like that you know what I'm saying especially the first game of the year I feel like we we should do better by that by now you know I leave his business to to him you know it was great to have him out there uh I thought he played well did you feel any limitations with the wrist at all were some throws that were easier harder to make or about normal no I feel good did you feel any impact of the time Chase missed and how that reflected with the offense today no I wouldn't say that's accurate why was the offense not on the same page or out of rhythm how would you characterize that we'll have to wash the tape I don't really have an answer for you right now I'll have a better answer on Wednesday burrow and Chase did not seem thrilled after the game nor should they the offense was not good the Patriots get their win her Edwards I ask you bigger surprise Patriots winning or Bengals losing Patriots winning I mean this is a game if you're the Cincinnati Bengals in the last what four or five seasons you've gotten off to slow starts their record is one in five yeah on opening day you're going on the road playing a a team that you should be the Patriots new head coach you know just everything's new there right now and then you go there and lay an egg like that well no they had it at home they went home excuse me at home excuse me but but I'm like it was puzzling to me I was watching this I was going what's wrong with these guys how does this happen every year Well here here's preseason yeah right when you don't participate a lot of your star don't participate in the preseason anymore the first two games of the season are almost a wash it doesn't matter what you did last year because guys are just trying to find their way the game is sped up in the regular season it's fast yeah and when you haven't practiced and then played in games in the preseason it catches up to we saw some ugly all over the league today wasn't just the B A lot of ugly as you said most the facto preseason game uh her Edwards thanks for your perspective their season which ended with a hardfought NFC Championship game loss against against San Francisco Detroit has now won nine of its last 10 at home when you add in the playoffs Tyreek Hills morning began in a most unusual way detained by police just a block from the Hard Rock stadium in this world of social media video of it was everywhere almost instantly and given that Jeff Darlington was there it was impossible not to think of what happened to Scotty sheffler at the PGA Championship in Louisville when he was arrested in the early morning hours prior to the second round there Darlington was on hand you might recall Sheffer then played tremendous that day and those charges were eventually dropped we wonder is this headed in the same direction we got some news on that coming up Legend Randy Moss for the most by any player Hills dominating performance came after a slow start for the offense something their quarterback said they need to get sorted out moving forward I think uh collectively as a group offensively uh it was just one of those deals where we just needed to get our head out of our ass that was it like that was it it was okay yeah we're just going to come out here you know it's hot these dudes are probably going to give up a little bit no we got punched in the mouth and that's what you get how you going to respond that's all joined Now by nworth head football coach Tim Hasselbeck undefeated and uh we're happy to have you with us on Sunday nights during the NFL season and it feels like last year I don't know how many times but it was often we would look at this Dolphins offense and you'd show us what they were doing and there's people running all over hell's Halfacre was that Hill touchdown A variation of some of the things that they've schemed up in the past a new a new a new uh sort of spoke in the wheel yeah kind of like 2.0 version like a you know plays off of plays a lot of times we see in the National Football League and a lot of times you see shot plays after turnovers so you showed in the Highlight etn fumbles the football well it's first and 10 so is it a shot play backed up on your own 20 for Mike Daniel like yeah it is and so we know that they're great at running all those rpos but when you run rpos the ball comes out quickly and the reason it comes out quickly is because you're blocking the run and so now you have a play off of a play it's going to look like their RPO game motion the back out of the back field that brings a Defender with him because of the action the linebacker is going to step up and they love to throw that glance in behind the the linebackers but the safety start to get nosy to take that away and here's your shot a little pump to that glance and there's Tyreek Hill able to keep his speed up and score I I will say you know last year we talked about stuff that we had seen before right we talked about that little like you know cheat motion talk about all the different things that they would do this another version kind of like an an RPO double move which I know you love the double moves but it's like an RPO double move shot was really good at a key time yeah I mean that was a game where again if etn doesn't fumble you're up 17 points that offense is explosive but that's a big number to make up in about 17 minutes time instead they don't get the six Miami gets it and then they end up winning at the end the game that we just followed um an overtime game where Detroit wins the toss they go right down the field and score had La won you and I'd been talking about the magic trick that uh Stafford and the Rams were able to pull out of the out of there they don't have their left tackle he's injured puka goes down it's basically the Stafford and cup show and all credit to them for getting this game to overtime but in the end the Lions do as Mike Taro was saying on the NBC call and I agree you're supposed to be one of the bullies in the block you're supposed to win your home games and they figured out a way to do it I guess the place to start is what happened in overtime and that that's an interesting luxury they have isn't it you can go Gibbs with some finesse or you can go Montgomery that's battering or am he's who won them the game what' you see there well the backs for sure they have just run the ball down your throat so much so that the head coach of the team that's on defense says hey I have to call a timeout just to see if we can hold on takes the time out and then basically every man scores with the guy he's blocking into the end zone I mean that I think you know we know how Dan Campbell is the the sometimes teams can take on the identity of their head coach right like we saw it a little bit last year like there what we just saw means there should be no reason to think that it shouldn't continue to happen I think it is interesting and it and it speaks to the luxury of options that they have lorta and St Brown had only seven catches in this game but now and you never know with the chatter you hear in training camp like oo look out for Williams like he's he's going to be the guy well he has 121 in that double move touchdown if they like Miami if the Lions start adding multiple options it only makes them more dangerous and it appears that the chatter was real here doesn't it it does and then when you think about you've got a play caller who's done a very good job and then a quarterback who's not yet 30 years old that's been to a Super Bowl who's who's been in big games who makes great decisions like I I think there's an element there too when we talk about the grit and we talk about some of their other players how necessarily unless you say actually it's really important two years ago they beat Green Bay to end the year they don't go to the playoffs but that's a step in the right direction then they probably should have been in the Super Bowl they lose a game at San Francisco where they they had a big lead it Slips Away that now they were a bullseye all a sudden how important to win this game to start the year in the correct fashion giving it two of the next three on the road I think how they won it's important right the identity of the team the buyin of look when you watch those two teams Scott and and you said okay which team do you think had a harder training camp which team do you think had a tougher training camp right like you would say Detroit like the way they finished that game and so I think when the players start to believe what the coach is kind of preaching of how to win like I think it was the manner of which it happened I think it was so uh probably important for the Lions they got after the opposing team quarterback and they ran the football and they get the 2620 overtime Victory first Sunday in the books we have plenty more to come with Tim here at Sport Center continuous until 1:00 eastern time we've got uh the coaches at the podium coach McVey and when Dan Campbell makes his way to the podium well and they just kept coming man they fought and they fought um and it was um you know man it was you know it was a lot of I respect respect it I do I respect it and that quarterback man Stafford I thought played lights out man and and played tough and hit after hit get just kept getting up and making unbelievable throws so um I just give them a lot of credit they did they fought now um but but we're hard to break so we did what we had to do and uh you know our defense held there uh before that fox makes a heck of a punt and uh defense holds offense we get it back and uh you know get it in overtime we win the toss and and we don't look back so we eventually found our Rhythm we did what we had to do and I said it early in the week the team that makes the most mistakes is the one who usually loses these early games and uh we made one less mistake and and uh so now we just got to improve from there Sean McVey getting a lot of credit from Dan Campbell tough loss his thoughts after the Rams Fallen OT um with the look that we had wanted and we just didn't make it but uh we came in here with an aggressive mindset and mentality uh didn't feel like you could settle for field goals that's why we came up short the last time and then ultimately a couple of those situations is inevitably what ended up leading to us probably not finishing it out tonight U the penalty was big one to bring the touchdown back and then having a turn over and then that one that you alluded to but all those are growth opportunities for us but um we came here to to be aggressive and and I wouldn't take that decision back yep well they were big you know we got the looks that we wanted and we got the look that we wanted on the third down as well um and and you know what this is that's part of it there was a lot of great individual plays there was a lot of guys that stepped up you know I was proud of Warren mundon without AJ Airi coming in I mean you Flex him up from the practice squad no boom goes down he plays the whole second half he's going against one of the Premier rushers in this league uh for the majority of the game and I thought our guys did a good job of being able to help and lend some presence um but he should be proud of the way that he handled himself tonight so they lose the game and the question is have they lost puka nakua for some period of time had the knee injury in Camp was playing well and was targeted often early went down on a catch did not actually returned for part of a series and then left on a cart no update yet if we get one we will let you know what we hear not a shock that in the absence of the ca Cooper cup was targeted 21 times triple the amount of any other Rams receiver he had 14 catches on career games with multiple touchdowns passing and multiple rushing touchdowns Tai a guy with a gold jacket Hall of Famer Steve Young for the most in NFL history he's the first player to accomplish the feat in a season opening game since another Hall of Famer and another Hall of Famer that's Troy Aman John Elway all right Tim Hassel back is back Josh uh Josh Allen's Supporting Cast Gabe Davis uh now in Jacksonville of course digs is now in Houston it's he put a cape on and just basically did did his thing I don't know if it's sustainable but that's what they're going to do what what did they do what was the the approach I think you I think everyone knows it's really not sustainable just to think about I mean just think about the play you showed at the end of the Highlight there now his hand you know is being you know needs to this's required right and so when you think about the marathon of the Season you think about the AFC and The Supporting Cast that other Superstar quarterbacks have around them it's it's not now I will say this I thought that the bills who ran the ball better at the end of the year last year or ran the ball more I should say really tried to at Parts especially early in this is I think 19 carries in this football game something around that number and so when you're doing that that's a departure from what we had seen before so I think by doing that you're at least giving yourself a chance for some balance but when you get to the got of havit situations you're right they're just going to ask him to put the cape on and he did in an environment where a kick gets run back you've got to respond you know kind of The Reckless abandon that he plays with and you see it in the Red Zone especially something we he gets criticized for because turnovers come it is turning into one of these things where you just have to take the good with the bad but I mean watching that game you're right it and all of a sudden you're down 14 and then it's like you look at him and go do something and then he does so I mean at some point you and I could do this for who knows how many years and we'll still be saying you know Josh he puts himself In Harm's Way a lot but he had four more touchdowns and they won again I mean this is just the script isn't it it is and then you know the graphic that you had up with the company he's keeping in terms of production with his legs and through the air is is incredible all right Tim Hassel back with us on Sundays throughout the NFL season who's nworth got next uh we're heading to Knoxville Knoxville Catholic this week double moves double moves got you it's in his back pocket they haven't run it yet beware you never know in the extra time it shows that we didn't play our best game um and still won and ton of stuff to clean up uh ton of things to get better at and it it does feel a little bit like week one last year where it's like yeah we kind of like we're making some mistakes but we're able to get the win anyways and um for it to be in overtime it is special and um one I think you know months from now we'll look back and be happy we have you know we had our opportunities but uh weren't able to capitalize on them and um still at the end of the game you know if I if I can hit that ball to Cooper uh we're just a little bit on different pages on where we were heading on that one and and uh totally understand what he was doing it's uh it's part of the game it's a game of football um humbling Golf and Stafford number one picks traded for one another Golf Now 2 to one in the head-to heads Stafford did have his first pick tonight against his former team unfortunately for him and the Rams that came in the Red Zone when they were trailing 1023 speaking of top picks the first overall pick in the draft this last spring as everyone knows Caleb Williams Airs of the first team in the history of the National Football League to win a game with fewer than 150 total yards after facing a 17-point deficit if you're wondering how often that's even been a possibility there are now 1871 and one all wait a minute how how many teams are one and 871 all time in these games and and the one is Chicago this afternoon I struggle with math some times all right the number four of 30 and four touchdowns and he joins Tom Brady is the only other Tampa Bay quarterback in the last decade to complete 80% of his passes with four touchdowns and zero picks Brady did it just once in a Buccaneer uniform it's the first time Baker's done it at any level since back in the Oklahoma days that was 2015 these aren't rookies Justin Fields Kirk Cousins facing field I felt really good about both quarterbacks I uh was very clear to you guys guys when I named Russ the starter how comfortable I was with both quarterbacks and so if that is true why not be really comfortable with playing Justin under the circumstances with Russ being in less than IDEAL Physical shape and so that was a thought process it wasn't a lot of discussion Russ was very supportive today and that was appreciated but we went with Justin man I'm glad we got two real capable quarterbacks as I've mentioned before I just came in wanting a win and uh I'm glad that we're leaving here with the win so um in terms of who's starting who's not all I want to do is win at the end of the day so um yeah I'm I'm really not even you know gonna get into all that you know who I want to start at the end of the day I'm I came here to win no matter if if I was going to throw for 300 yards 100 yards no yards like I came here to W so um that's the only uh Focus I have Fields completed 74% of his passes which is tied for the third highest rate in his career and His Highest in a victory potions didn't lead to a ton of yards the air yards protect was nearly at the bottom of his 39 career NFL starts but as he said and I'm sure his coach would Echo the sentiment foree for Fore spee fore spee fore [Music] for spee foree fore fore spee foree foree speech spee fore foree fore spe fore for fore speee [Music]
