good morning DJ and PK it's 9975 the Zone the college football season is underway in Earnest Utah destroys Southern Utah 49 to nothing the important thing is that cam Rising played Five series and the youth scored five touchdowns now Southern Utah looked lost on defense not accounting for guys losing track of guys giving up big plays all over the field but the youths couldn't looked any better there will be better tests presumably Baylor next week the big test is obviously Oklahoma State and the conference opener but 49 nothing youth working to do much better than that the starters were out a little before halftime we will have postgame interviews coming up with youth players and Kyle Winningham but first we're going to look ahead to BYU's opener Saturday night with Southern Illinois here's the offensive coordinator Aaron rodrik well uh what's the latest sorry no I know I know um we're not going to say what we're doing again CU we want I want Southern Illinois to have prepare for both guys um but I will say that um what I hoped would happen during camp that someone would separate themsel enough to be the clear starter that we feel like that's occurred and um so we we'll have a starting quarterback Saturday night and and uh expecting good things so did that separation create where that quarterback will be the only guy that's playing on Saturday um I'm not going to say that either cuz I again I want just don't want to give away any competitive advantages um they are both good players and it was a good competition and uh it took took some time took some time for there to be some separation but feel like we got what we were looking for and I think everybody on this team watched it happen when you're talking about competitive advantages do you think that's going to be the difference between wins and losses this week or down the road or like I mean small things like that can be the difference in any game you know I mean just knowing who's going to play who to prepare for um there's so many little things and and the games can be so tight and we have a lot of respect for this team and we're going to treat this team the same way we treat any any big 12 opponent um and so yeah to answer your question there's all those things add up do you want to go into SMU with a clearcut start or are you looking at this game as kind of the last we have a clear-cut starter right now yeah how did how did the team take it and especially the guy who's not the cut starter or can you Dev um first of all both quarterbacks were great great um they're very professional all through Camp um and I think those guys are good friends and you see them compete on the field but they also help each other out and uh I feel like our players as well have a lot of respect for both of them they the the quarterback set a great example for how to be professional out here every day how to compete um and be a great teammate and so um I don't sense any division At All by anybody I think everybody wants to win and we're going to rotate a lot of people at at at receiver and tight end and running back and and um nobody you know once you're playing whoever's in the game is in the game and you got to go got to go execute when you were making the process uh or the decision how much did you factor in the the eligibility of these guys where bannan's in his final year red still got a year ahead not at all it's it's about winning winning now win now this is college football's too competitive to think that far ahead and there's too much turnover in this game um schedule's you know every week's a every week's a you know great opponent so we're not thinking it all about down the road you got to win now all the players on the dev chart and I want to say I've I've always coached that way you know even from for the last 20 years it's it's a win now mentality first you sure you want to develop players in the future but it's too competitive to you know think too far ahead and the quarterback that didn't win the job have theyed that they're still all in in this all in all in all the players that are listed on the depth chart for this week yeah they ready to go good good everybody's playing this on that depth chart yeah and yeah and that depth chart is very similar to the Past we're going to we'll rotate I've said this before as many receivers as it can help us and as many tight ends and running backs can help us and they're ready to play we'll find ways to use them and so that's why the depth is the way it is how do you feel about the overall all Readiness level of the offense now that you're three games waking the opening well I want to uh you know be cautious with what I with how much praise I give them until till we go do it in a real game um but I see an improvement from where we were at this point a year ago just again in terms I keep saying the word continuity we've have we have returning players now that know this offense and that have been through a big 12 season running this system and I think we're going to see I expect to see a higher level of execution than we did a year ago is there a lot of separation between the third running back spot with Miles and poai or where are you at on that um say sorry between miles and Pokey I is there a lot of Separation now or is it very close oh shoot I I don't know how to answer that the only difference the only the main differences would just be um just time in the program and you know again I just was just talking about continuity but um both of those guys are good good players they they bring a different element they bring a speed and elusiveness and um they bring some things that are a little different from the other two guys so and I think that that's a real thing you know if you can uh throw different things at a defense they have to prepare for different things um you know we we want to be tough to defend and I think using those guys in different ways is going to make us harder to defend who's your third quarterback um again not going to reveal that and also that is kind of an ongoing battle and um I will say that man both of those guys are good players I I feel really good about our quarterback group right now and um this is as solid of a group as we've had since I've been here and I think we've had good quarterback play in the last six years and I expect it to continue when stands out to you about southern Illinois their defense like is there traits stand out yeah good question Southern Illinois is very very good on defense they uh they know what they're doing they're very disciplined uh they're good tacklers they fly to the ball they play really hard they're very fundamentally sound they they defeat blocks they pursue the football and they play with a lot of speed and violence I mean I'm I'm so impressed to have tons of respect for these guys and um I can see why they were you know they were like third or fourth best defense in FCS last year and you know that that shows you say that you'll play multiple receivers and tight ends help you is that based off just like fatigue or how did I mean it's what we've always done I I don't know I people had a bunch of questions about this week and it's always been that way we've always played five six maybe seven receivers we've always played three tight ends sometimes four five um that's been it's been pretty standard um and same with running back we've rotated backs over the years with the exception of uh I would say even you know even Tyler aler when we were trying to get him 20 25 carries a game p catoa was still playing a lot and Miles Davis was getting in there too and so um I think you know it's just a matter of trying to get the ball to your best players and then keep everybody fresh and playing fast in the fourth quarter you and um if we're running fast in the fourth quarter and the other team's starting to Peter out then that's an advantage for us with the uh tablet communication out playay is there any new assignments on the on the offensive side for game day with field and box any any changes there for you guys not a great deal of change in terms of where people are but um we do have a process that we're going to uh Implement um in between series to try to take advantage of that I think every team obviously everybody's going to do that um we've had a couple trial runs and scrimmages but it it's still you know it's still uh something that remains to be seen there we might have to tweak that process as we get actual game experience with the actual TV timeouts and and you know the flow of a real college football game is hard to simulate in just a scrimmage so um but it's been a lot of really useful out here at practice and in our scrimmages and um looking forward to it in games did you accomplish everything you wanted to on the offensive line um this this B Camp we'll find out Saturday night I I uh I have seen Improvement in that group they're very well coached and I think um our tight end play has a big impact on how the old line appears to be um you know it's it's an 11-man thing every play too it's our quarterbacks making sure we're in the right Run play plays we we check a lot of plays and sometimes it's uh the o line might look really bad if the quarterback has Us in the wrong play for whatever the defense is doing so um but I have seen Improvement in those guys and I look forward to watching them play Saturday night there's BYU offensive coordinator Aaron rodder we're going to take a break when we come back we're talking Big 12 Football with Barry traml stay with us good morning DJ and PK it's 975 The Zone we are brought to you by Black Desert Resort Utah's Premier Golf Resort we spoke with Barry traml yesterday now obviously there's some games Thursday night Kansas blew out Lenwood and Colorado barely escaped but 13126 over North Dakota State and obviously the UT won 49 nothing so Barry didn't know about those when he was talking to us but here's Barry tramble talk a Big 12 Football with PK and I why is Oklahoma State playing South Dakota State usually you play the money games against a gimme in South Dakota State's been really good so they're not a gimme it's not a gimme it was a terrible terrible scheduling snafu I assume somebody's been fired over this uh probably not the person that scheduled it but somebody took the fall gundy's not happy you know OSU can set the game time because this is the the TV game you control and they they're playing at one o00 cuz gundy's hoping it was going to be 100 degrees and would Wilt the jack rabbits turns out we got a break breaking the weather and it's going to be in the 80s but he's concerned about it he's concerned about it it reminds me you know sometimes people that are not heavily involved make decisions that they shouldn't make one year uh B Tubs was coaching basketball at OU and they opened the year with us International really us IU and here's the deal I mean us International is a little bit of a you know strange name not a not then or now is it a common name and whoever was doing the marketing and the ticketing and all that kind of stuff they looked at that and it's a season opener and they think well that's clearly some sort of traveling Squad they assumed it was an exhibition game so it didn't go on the season ticket package and all of a sudden the Sooners are having a game and it's not part of the season ticket package and tubs hit the roof and uh there was there was some Fallout but um yeah they they got no business plan South Dakota state because that's a team that could line up and beat you now you said uh the weather's going to be good and I'm going to be in still water in next month in three or four weeks when the UTS go out there and my wife and I we saw twister over the weekend and I'm really nervous about going to Oklahoma um yeah I don't be this is not tornado season tornado season generally is April May early June it'd have to be something really AB abnormal to to pop you i' fear the earthquake I'd fear the earthquakes more than I would the tornadoes you know we've started having earthquakes because of the fracking and um we famously the 2011 I think it was K State Oklahoma State game huge game ABC Saturday night game of the week Kirk herb Street was there and uh in the post game like soon as the game's over they do a a sendoff with herb Street and whoever was calling the game with him up in the Press Box and he's on camera and all of a sudden uh at my house I covered the game in Norman that night I was already home but I'm watching on TV we feel a massive earthquake I could feel my the walls in my house shook and I'm 85 miles from still water and the epicenter was closer to still water so it threw herb Street around and he said wait wait wait what's going on so I would worry about the Earth breaks more than the tornadoes in three weeks okay because when they had the when the uh the tornado went through when they were doing the rodeo in the movie that really shook me I've not seen the lightest one now that first when we had cows flying through the air and there were no cows flying through the air I told my wife when the when we walked out I wanted to see a cow fly through the air and I didn't I think that's more science fiction I don't I don't know of any incidences of a cow actually flying through the air in Oklahoma doesn't mean it couldn't happen but I don't know that that's ever been actually scientifically documented mom always said when pigs fly and I thought well pigs are lower to the ground than cows so I'm say if the cow can't fly the pig can't fly either right well yeah it'd be easier to get some get some wind under that cow than one of those pigs that are you know about uh eight feet in circumference so uh yeah it's a uh I I I really think you're going to be fine outside of the heat now the heat might get you I I grew up in Phoenix so I'm okay well I don't know I don't know you've been you've been soft all these years saw L you get S has been many years that's for sure um around our way it is basically we've Anointed The UTS as playoff or disappointment you know everyone has expectations for BYU it's get Bo eligible or disappointment right so depending on where you are as a program uh you have your different expectations but for the youths it just seems like all of us and you know we can say we're not biased neither DJ and I grew up here and didn't attend to any of these schools but we've known these guys so I think everybody has a little bit of a bias and probably everybody has as much as we don't want to be particularly you and I his old newspaper guys want to be homers but I think we're all homers to an extent uh so but beyond what we think it's like every National man woman who's following the Utes oh yeah playoff all the way I'm wondering what is the feeling as far as Oklahoma state is it to the level that we seem to think it is for the UTS yeah with one exception with one caveat is that oh fans historically are a little bit of a pessimistic Bunch they they have not had unbelievable success and they've been brow beat by the Sooners for 80 years 100 years whatever whenever you want to start that and you know we got a guy that does a big fan survey it's really interesting he sends it to me every year and this year he ended up with 1,400 and something surveys uh from OSU fans and they collectively predicted eight and a half wins for OSU which is certainly not going to get them in the playoff or win the Big 12 they're just a little bit of a pessimistic Bunch but the truth is that's really the standard I think now if you're Utah or Oklahoma State or Kansas state is you ought to be if you're capable of winning the Big 12 which I think those three programs are and some other then that should be the goal and anything less than that should be disappointing because the playoff has been expanded it's not a closed Society anymore you can get in and and uh see what happens so I think it's an opportunity lost if you got a good team and don't make the playoff so um you know if Utah goes I don't know what would what what what would certainly if they go 11- two I say they go 11- one and lose in the Big 12 title game and don't make the playoffs that would be a disappointing season probably be an angry season too because you probably think you you ought to make it at that point but they go 10 and three 10 and two whatever you know have a really good year but don't make the playoff I would I would label that disappointing for Oklahoma State and I would label that disappointing for Utah I'm assuming the teams that are 12-0 and 11-1 are in the playoff when they go to the conference title game I think 11- two get you in I do think there's a chance 10- two teams in the ACC and Big 12 could be in trouble they're probably in but they could be in trouble and at nine and three don't you think teams are done and they're out and they're not getting in from the Big 12 oh yeah yeah three losses is is an elimination and frankly it's not going to be easy from the SEC uh to get in if you're nine and three you know we got Oklahoma's got an unbelievable tough schedule so there's a theory if they go nine and three and beat the right teams they might be in but the one thing I do think though and this is something to keep an eye on for playoffs and we saw this play out in the Big 12 of 22 the committee respects you if you if you make the conf if you win your conference standings go to the conference title game and lose they don't pay peniz you the way they penalize teams for a normal loss and TCU remember in 22 went 12-0 and went to the Big 12 title game lost in overtime to K State and not only did they still make the playoffs they didn't even fall in the in the committee rankings they were number three going in I guess it was who was unbeaten Michigan and Georgia I guess Georgia Michigan TC you and they come out of that that week and they're still number three I think you're going to see some of that respect for winning your conference standings still hold and so I think if a Utah went 11- one and lost to whoever in in Arlington I think there's a decent chance they would still make it at 11 and two then they would get two team teams in that's got to be what yourm Mark is looking for as a way to get two teams in it seemed like when they made the scheduling it's like that's what they had in mind you get BYU is playing the five ranked teams and Utah is only playing two now obviously they can't play themselves so that's one right there but it seems like the teams at the bottom have a tougher run than the teams at the top which brings me to the question with that in mind do you think that there will be a dominant 11- one type team when we get to the end in November well the Big 12 certainly needs that you know we where everybody Your Mark has done this has spouted um uh confidence and um pride in the Big 12 being the most competitive he calls it the deepest I don't think that's really what he means but the most competitive conference but that's not going to get you anywhere and if you get if you get six teams tied for first place at set and two that's not going to do the conference any good at all right other than people enjoy watching the games you need a team or two or three but preferably two to sort of emerge not just this year but over the course of two or three years and become you know sort of a a bigger brand than they are and you know people like Utah and Oklahoma State and Kansas State have done a really good job of building up their brands over the last every how many years but they really need to inflate those even more get those even bigger so that they can do things uh like uh instill sort of it's almost like a uh a Vulcan mind meld onto the committee members oh Utah's good we know that and that's sort of the way they look at certain teams in the Big 10 of the secc and that's what the big 12 needs most so sort of become the Clemson Andor Florida state of the ACC that's the difference in the ACC and Big 12 is Big 12's got a lot more good teams but they don't have those two teams that have done it at the highest level and so that's what that's what the big 12 needs is is sort of become a somebody to to fill the the void of a blue blood and become a big 12 blue blood and a lot of that comes down to is the middle of the league easy for the top of the league to handle or is it difficult in the Pack 12 the middle of the league was always pretty good and a problem for the top of the league so the league would you know cannibalize itself beat itself up I'm curious about TCU and West Virginia two teams that I think have been uh predicted to be in the middle of the league tcu's at Stanford and West Virginia is hosting Penn State how good are those teams can they win in the case of TCU could they win easily I think for West Virginia playing eighth ranked Penn State win by one and they'll be thrilled how good are those two teams yeah I don't I think West Virginia is going to be pretty good I have no idea about P about TCU I mean nobody saw 22 coming nobody saw 23 coming when they're pretty mediocre so I just don't know um it's it's been a sort of an up and down ride for sunny dkes I think they're picked 10th TCU so uh you can't write them off they've proven that but you know there's not a lot to get excited about and teams like West Virginia Central Florida Iowa State even Tech on some level you know they're not picked in that top five but they've shown they can be pretty good West Virginia was nine and four last year and against and against a pretty tough schedule so I don't know that you can R you can ride anybody off in the top 10 of the of the conference and that's the thing goes back to your mark depth and and fun and competitive all those things so that's going to be fun to watch I just I don't I'm I'm pretty sure West Virginia is gonna be pretty good I just don't know about TCU TCU and Tech to me are the biggest mysteries in the conference everybody else I I have a pretty good good read on don't really have one on Tech or TCU Utah fans I've traveled with them to every place that they've gone in the Pack 12 and as the program got better you could see the increase of travel uh as far as away games and all that stuff and it's always fun to go to another stadium and have your team win and and the home fans clear out and your guys stay there and you celebrating and all that so they have a good feel of how difficult it is for each of the stadiums tell us about home field advantage of the existing Big 12 places that you've been to and have covered all these years to give the youth fans an idea of what they're in for okay uh Kansas state has an outstanding one it's not a big Stadium seats about 50,000 but it's pretty pretty tight they pack it they're choreographed they have a good time most of them remember the horror of the you know the days when they were the worst program in college football year after year decade after decade they take a lot of pride in how they picked themselves up by the boot straps they got a bunch of cool songs when they start playing the Wabash Cannonball and the whole place is is jumping around it's it's a pretty it's a pretty great environment I'd put I'd put K State number one um Tech is it's tough because uh they're pretty Rowdy in bad ways so they can get you off your game you can quit concentrating both fans visiting fans and visiting team so um it's not as they're not as successful at home as they used to be I mean when they went when they had Mike Leech the leech years I mean that was a OSU used to go down there and just get the get their brains beat out and Stoops had trouble Stoops lost let's see Stoops Stoops lost three times in Leck in his first 10 years so he he didn't have he didn't have it easy um but that's lessened a little bit as they've sort of falling off still water is very tough tight tight Sidelines the fans are right on you and it's built up like a 10t wall so they're looking down but right over on top of you it's almost it's almost like a great basketball arena so and they've you know they pack it out 52,000 and they and they really enjoyed sort of the short version of the Kansas State story they really appreciate how much they've come how far they've come how much they've accomplished uh let's see West Virginia is not as tough as I was led to believe you know I was it's it's a pretty cool place to go of course not as cool for Utah because we think it's cool because you got mountains of course Utah's got the mountains too so we do um it's not but but it's still pretty good uh the drinking you know you always heard they were crazy and drunk and all that and I've not encountered any of that they're pretty good fans in morgant town uh Baylor is not really they got some cool Traditions but they don't have you know I don't think it's a terribly intimidating Place TCU is not very intimidating at all uh who we Iowa State's really good it's just a cool place because it's a different part of the country you know the when we always go to De Mo usually spend the night into de Mo 30 miles south of Ames and when you you get on I35 and drive from De Mo to as on a Saturday morning and about halfway there there's a mile marker and it says like uh aim 15 Cedar Falls 75 Minneapolis 235 and when you see that Minneapolis you realize man we're in we really are in a different part of the country so you get up there and it's always unless you go in September it's it's always pretty cold and chilly and you get there and the fans are there early and tailgating they got a great tailgate um I don't know that it's intimidating but it's a pretty cool environment because they've got the best fans in college football in terms of supporting the team team for no good reason they've never had a I'm they've literally never had a great stretch Matt Campbell is their best coach ever probably what he's doing right now and they just you know they they support him it's not always full but it's always close to fall so it's a it's open-ended Stadium though mostly so it's not you know the environment is not conducive to uh noise and all that but it's still a really cool place to go uh um I don't care who am I leaving out from the old line I think that's it I think that's it Houston is uh I got the new stadium it's not it's not much of an atmosphere down there um I got to go to Central Florida last year they they whacked Cowboys 45 to3 that day um it's not a great stadium and it's not a great environment but you can see Cape Canaveral from uh the towers of Cape Canaveral from the Press Box okay which I thought that's pretty I thought that's pretty cool I I've always thought Central Florida screwed up royally 50 years ago you know they're heavily tied in with the space industry with NASA and the United States space program and you know they they call themselves or that that East Coast of Florida calls and that area calls itself Space Coast um because of Cape Canaveral and all those things I thought the UCF should change its name to Space Coast University like the cool and and they have like they got they got all these like half a NASA is US UCF grads because they just have so many engineers in the uh in the Aerospace industry if you want if you had a university called Space Coast have you thought about how you could Market that now they got 75,000 students so you know I don't think they're having trouble marketing but uh I always I always thought you CF ought to be Space Coast University so uh who else we got Cincinnati you guys been to Cincinnati no I've seen it on TV it looks like the Stadium's built right into the campus it looks cool it looks old school and it looks like it hangs over the field and would be a pretty intimidating atmosphere if it's full which it frequently was not yeah it is unbelievably cool it's only 40,000 seats and it's just tucked in if you're standing at the 50 yd line at Midfield you are about I don't know 51 yards from the stands you're you're less than a 100 yards from the Student Union and you're less than a 100 yards from the student wellness facility like the student you know workout facility and all that I mean this that old stadium is just right in the middle of everything they don't have G it's a literally a football stadium without Gates because it just from the from the union to the to the like the what would be the gates of the stadium is like 20 feet I mean it's just right there so they just put up temporary barriers on Saturday to like make people come through and take tickets and it you can you can uh it sits at the bottom of a hill and you can stand up on the hill sort of the campus drag and look down on all of it it's a really great atmosphere and a cool Stadium um it's not terribly intimidating because it's so small but nippet stadium is a great place to go and you're right we don't have any place like that else in in uh the Big 12 and certainly not the SECU but it's just a it's in a Old City Cincinnati and it's just in an old you know Urban setting and it's it's just unlike anything most of us have experienced in college football here's Barry traml talking Big 12 Football when we come back the youths talk about the win over to Southern Utah stay with us good morning DJ and PK it's 975 The Zone the youths win their season opener 49 to nothing the starters cam Rising plays Five series they score five touchdowns they 35 nothing he is done actually didn't play the last series of the first half they went to the bench and uh and brought in Isaac Wilson who threw an interception right before halftime ended up with a touchdown pass and a couple of picks in the game after the game cam rising and brt keithy leading the you players to the podium cam you got five touchdowns today how' it feel to kind of just be out there um it's good it's nice and easy when you got a guy like this that's going to go and kind of make your job easy uh just a great team win um just got to keep it rolling and focus on next week what did that feel like your first pass and first moments on the field after such a long time away um it was special but uh it all that Focus kind of goes out of the way once I say say set go and just really get the game going and yeah just focused on winning you ran four times were you supposed to it's football you got to you got to do stuff yeah BR you get those three touchdowns I mean I don't know why they weren't guarding you but you get them how does it feel to just be back take hits get in there do what you did yeah it feels good but I I've been doing this for preparing for two years and just feels good to know I can still do it and we still got a lot of games to go and just can't wait for next week is there butterflies at all especially when you're that wide open on that first one I mean we've been practicing just for those type of catches just got to make sure to catch it you know cuz it's so wide open but not just football at the end of the day we practiced so much and um just pitch and catch that third one I mean you broke like four tackles to get in there I saw the end zone I'm a little slippery so it feels good and um they just couldn't tackle I guess it's a gr man you uh you'd s all offseason you couldn't wait to get hit and you did take three or four hits on on that one play what did it feel like to kind of get you back into game mode yeah I wouldn't say those were really hits I got hit a couple times where I got bent back and felt kind of crazy but um those were really got me awake and those I didn't really feel those hits at all they didn't really tackle me so other than that it feels good how happy were you for Caleb to get that touchdown feels good he should have had too but um no it was good for him to get that touchdown and I'm happy for him and can't wait for more djn you get a touchdown obviously the first score of the season I mean what did feel like just to be out there tonight um it felt excellent you know that was my first collegate touchdown and not only that it was my first touchdown in the red so it it was like it was super turned uh that was like the biggest moment of my life almost I was but yeah it felt really nice to uh to score today and you know that being my first of my career and it just it was excellent what was it like obviously just kind of walking out there it's been two years two years for you brand but walk me through that moment moment and and how did you sort of embraced It ultimately leading into the snap yeah you just look out to the kind of the stands and and get kind of get a second to just take it in and breathe and usually kind of that that uh feeling kind of goes out of the out of the the way once the coin toss really happens and then you're just focused on winning the game Dan what's the sideline like when the defense pitches a shut out what's it like on your side of the ball uh when scally's happy everyone else is happy so I mean that's all we could ask for so it was great then you looked healthy out there how did it feel just you got two sacks and what was it like for you uh I felt healthy it felt great um feel very grateful now since I had to play last year not healthy how it feels to play healthy it's just a blessing so uh it was great to be out there and just to really see how how good I can do when I'm at my full potential djon could you believe how open you were on on both of those was is there extra pressure when you that open um I would say you get a little bit more nerves when you're wide open uh you feel like it's harder to to catch the ball but it's it's all everything that we go in with practice we run the plays over and over so it's just practice how you play cam I'm sure you weren't aware of it in the moment but right before Alex Smith went into the Ring of Honor and passed him on the career touchdowns list knowing that uh seeing him go up in the in the Ring of Honor I'm sure getting know him a little bit what's that what's that it's kind of a surreal moment um guy I have just a tremendous amount of respect for hope I can have half the career he has had and and just honored to to be in that situation and what was your impression of Isaac's performance obviously made a few mistakes there but bounced back with a touchdown I think he got put in a bad situation his first few snaps um when you when you go in there and you're in that two-minute situation I I I think it's hard when you just get thrown into that and and that's kind of not the ideal way to start but I I think he did a good job responding and coming back um definitely needs to clean some things up but we all do pretty much you help coach him up on the sideline now for something like that or how what's that process like yeah we talk we always talk we're always trying to trying to figure out things and and stuff that we can do that that can apply to the game and just make us that much better but yeah it's it's hard in those type of situations at the end of the half BR as well as you guys played on both sides the ball the competition gets a lot tougher next week what can you take from this game into the Baylor game we definitely have room for improvement but uh going Baylor's coming here too which is a lot better and um we just got to get to work and we have a full week full weekend to recover also and it's going to feel good getting back on Monday and getting to work Brandon cam does it feel like two years you guys yeah time yeah it does but uh it feels good and I was a little nervous going out there at first but after the first snap I felt good and I'm just glad to be back yeah definitely it felt like a long time but happy to be back brand you just talked about how you guys have a few extra days to prepare for your next game um what do these weeks look like when you have those extra days and that extra time to and like get some rest and get prepared for the next one it's going to be good to have these next two days off honestly just get your body right but especially going to a game like Baylor but um yeah we have a lot of lot of things that we can work on and having these two days get our body rate and go into Monday which is an extra day and um I don't know if they play this weekend but it'll be nice to get a game in to see how they play and we can prepare for them that way brand you're the only tight end in Big 12 history with three touchdowns and a half I don't know if you know that but how does that make you feel what about the oldest uh honestly I don't really care but um I just want to win games and whatever it takes score touchdowns or it doesn't it doesn't matter I just want to win question obviously Andy talked a little bit about you during fall Camp about your emergence what went right for you during this fall camp and and having the performance you did tonight what do you feel like your role will be in the offense moving forward um excuse my language I'm sorry um just anywhere that they need me anywhere that they could use me um I feel like I have a special skill set so where wherever I'm I'm useful they could put me at whether it's receiver whether it's running back flexed out not motion uh I just want to be useful to the team and just want to see us win there are the you players now here's the head coach Kyle Whittingham good start to the season uh it was good to see Obviously good to see Cam and brt keithy back out there doing their thing um what they hooked up three times for touchdown passes uh great effort by dejon Stanley uh tonight I think he had over 200 all-purpose yards or somewhere in that neighborhood um defense lights out shut out so did what we we were supposed to do I thought Southern Utah was a hard playing team they played hard and um we just had some talented guys out there making plays but but uh it's good to get that one under our belt obviously um degree of difficulty increases this week Baylor coming to town or next week I should say um non-conference game but doesn't matter every game is is critical in college football so so we got to be out ready to uh to be at our best next week um we'll come in tomorrow and watch this film and make Corrections and give our players the weekend off and come back Monday ready to roll and and get ready for the Baylor Bears so questions Kyle how did you feel about Cam's runs uh it was good to see him moving quick and and being able to cut and and you know do his thing but uh a little too much contact tonight uh you know and we'll we'll we'll uh try to reinforce that more if we possibly can but he's so competitive and and uh that's just his nature but but little little more contact than we would have liked how about that did you notice any rust off him or is this the cam of old I think it's the cam of old I mean he at least tonight he was he was sharp um 67% what was it 10 of 15 10 of 14 so 70% completion percentage somewhere in there uh close to it uh bunch of touchdowns five five touchdown passes and uh didn't miss many throws there's a couple he missed but not many in those situations that cam got I know you said you've talked a lot about you have the numerous conversations of just avoiding those hits are those situations where you want him to slide or I mean how would you as a coach want him to approach that yeah sliding is a good idea step out of bounds if the you know if it's in the vicinity uh just try to avoid those direct shots I mean you don't want to you don't want to take those shots and and uh we'll watch the film and there was probably two or three times where he could have got done a little better job of getting out of Harm's Way you talked about it dejon package and then it really showed forth today what did you see from him well great stuff I mean you saw him that little rail route out of the back field a couple times uh big plays uh made some nice runs too got to the edge two or three times and he's an explosive guy you know he's not the biggest kid 185 PBS but but he's quick he's fast he's tough and uh he's very smooth I mean's he's so athletic what do you think of Elijah Davis's performance uh coming in for Kon Johnson yeah I thought he held down the the fort did a nice job uh came off coverage once fortunately it was a holding call so it didn't uh didn't end up hurting us uh that was him that had an interception was it not yeah had an interception so I thought he did a good job and we're going to have to take a hard look at what our best configuration is for next week um I thought Smith Snowden played really well on defense he's he's he's a really good football player uh the front played well but uh Scooby Scooby is what we call him Scooby Davis is is a guy that's been in the program I think it's his third year and he's he's got a lot of ability just needs toh continue to get more repetitions was Ken Johnson andah you know we'll defer till tomorrow but it doesn't look good for either of them but uh we'll see what the test results are when they get those uh scans tomorrow that's a long-term injury how are you going to approach the DB room with already such limited death yeah well uh if it is in fact uh severe and the long term tail Johnson would be the first answer you know pulling him back from safety back to the corner position he's got experience there he can do it uh we didn't want to have to do that we'll see but if we have to do it that's that's one answer right there what was your impression of Isaac Wilson's performance obviously Isaac yeah it was a tough spot he got put in in the first half you know that 38 seconds and you know trying to trying to get us down the field maybe it was a little bit unfair to put him in that spot but better safe than sorry didn't want you know cam played enough didn't want any fluke accident to happen to cam at that point so I thought it was time to uh get Cam out of the game and uh I thought Isaac came back in the second half did some much better things he'll learn from it he'll grow he's he's got all the tools he's got a strong arm uh he's he's very mobile as you saw he made some nice runs for us but it's a process and you know he was uh you know in high school just last year so I I we still think you know after we'd be crazy not to think that he's got a a big upside cuz cuz he does so we'll see competition obviously steps up quite a bit next week is the biggest thing you gain from a game like this is just confidence to kind of get into a a rhythm because you know it's going to be different players you're going against yeah sure I think uh well for Cam and Brandt it it was a confidence thing you just get get back in the flow and get back on the playing field and and into live action uh everybody else uh will watch the film like I said there's plenty to correct but uh I don't want to it a tuneup game but but it was a good game to get get the season started off with and and uh as I mentioned well I told the team afterwards that it'll be a a tough challenge this week Baylor's going to come in here they got good players they physical they played us right down to the wire last year we escaped with a victory but but they're a good football team when I asked you on Monday what you wanted to see as a success do you feel like you accomplished that by and large for the most part you know we still had a few penalties uh that uh you know were I don't want Sloppy I guess maybe too strong a word but but uh penalties that could have been avoided uh we weren't penalized excessively I don't think but just a few a few penalties that would like to see uh cleaned up but uh yeah you know we we took care of the football for the most part we did put on the ground twice with the running backs we ended up recovering those balls but uh it was I don't think we had any well Caleb loner that might be a drop I don't know if think I stripped it out of his hands or if he dropped it but but then he came back had a nice touchdown catch but overall I'd say it was a clean game for the most part I'm sorry I interrupt you you've obviously you're approaching this running back Group by committee um and John Stanley obviously had a a stellar game tonight how do you see his role increasing in any Avenue and to kind of piggyback off of that what was your impression of the running back G tonight well with Dijon he made the most of his reps you know he had a package of eight or nine plays and and he executed those plays to a te I mean he was he was did exactly right ran the correct routes uh ran the football like he was supposed to and and so I would say based on what we saw tonight we'll probably expand that package a little bit just keep feeding him a little bit more a little bit more um running back room as a whole um thought Mai Bernard gave us some quality runs in there uh Jaylen Glover had a nice run or two uh Mike Mitchell I think you know you saw his he's got some capability of you know being that big back that that uh we he's a closest thing to that big back that we have right now Hunter Andrews just a freshman a true freshman had a nice run at ball popped out though but uh I think exactly what we anticipated going into the game it would be by committee we wouldn't really have an rb1 and right now we're in the same boat which is not a bad thing but that's the same boat we're in right now is a shut out any sweeter than any other win than a regular win I guess and and what stood out about the defense it's always nice to shut someone out I mean that's the ultimate goal for a defense um I think that uh you know we we made some plays over there we had one or one or two interceptions one one interception but two or three sacks maybe four sacks so we made some plays we really controlled the game with our defense and uh really never uh you know they got a couple runs out out on us but uh never really gave up any sustained drive and of course didn't give up a score so very positive the entire team seemed to enjoy Caleb loner's touchdown they all they all went nuts I mean that's just an incredible story it is I asked him right after what he enjoyed more slam dunker catching a touchdown he said catching a touchdown pass so so he's all in and we you know we kind of like uh Dijon he had about an eight or nine package play selection tonight and I thought he did a good job and and uh he's going to help us this year he will continue to help us there's Utah football coach KY winingham when we come back what is trending the headlines are next
