this defense I just want you guys to touch on real quick is good for Clemson we saw it last week but we should see them on display again tonight you no them boys are real good and again I I kind of mentioned earlier we saw 30 minutes of unbelievable football from that defense tackles for loss pass breakup shutting down the run and then they just ran out of gas offense didn't help them out at all I'm excited to see those stars get another crack at it especially a guy like Peter Woods EJ I love Peter Woods I mean he got a against Georgia I plan on him being in the back field a lot tonight the thing that I want to see we talked about young guys playing I I actually want to see Samy Brown the Five Star Plus linebacker this is a great opportunity for him to get out there and play they subbed in a lot backer against Georgia and there was a mistake anyways so why not give this guy a chance yeah I I think emac hit the nail in the head I think they played as good as you could play on defense against maybe the very best team in the country in Georgia and then gave out a gas but like you said if enough good things happen offensively that's going to feel the defense's fire and they don't like what happened in that second half here they're going to take a lot of pride in this ball game no no question about it I think one thing to maybe watch is the defensive secondary a guy like khil Barnes was picked on a little bit in that game they were going after him there was some really great catches he turns his head around one or two times it's a big play going the other way I'm excited to see how does he respond in this game as well he just has to be sound it it it was communication things and and bad eyes on his part but the secondary is so good they are young but they're really good and mickens is the guy that's kind of got to get everybody in check he's the he's the leader back there so communication is going to be very important because this AB State team can really throw the ball around well and I think again when you get young guys rolling in you have some guys that are battling you know health concerns things of that nature and he's also a first round quarterback Saturday was last Saturday at Mercedes-Benz stadium for number one Georgia against Clemson it was a great ball game at the half and in the second half as dbos Sweeny told us yesterday Georgia just made more plays he still feels pretty good about his team but there's some details he wants worked out absolutely and it is the little things they weren't outmatched physically they weren't outmatched talent wise but you know what they had some run fits that were off they didn't leverage the football poor tackling in the second half and they only gave up one explosive play West in the first half they gave up four in the first 13 plays of the third quarter and it just rolled downhill on them from there and Kate kumnick hey the quarterback knows you get too much credit and sometimes you get too much blame but there is a little dirt in the details yeah there there absolutely is and when you start off the game and you're C Club neck and this is your first play from scrimmage and you throw it right in the dirt when he's 5 yds away from you on what would have probably been a 25 to 30 yard gain and then you follow that up with a dropped pass that would have been for a first down and a line to gain conversion that was penalized that's your first three plays of the game so 18 at 29 142 interception in the second half bottom line is this club and Clemson have to take another step here tonight they absolutely do you got to we got to see anticipation we got to see timing we've got to see decisiveness out of this offense maybe some upt tiger toown next on acc [Music] Network we're later as their Athletics director and tonight the tigers are here after after a 30 4 to3 loss last Saturday in Atlanta to top ranked Georgia in a game that was 6 nothing at half time as to said earlier Georgia blew the ball game open with explosives as we got ready to start that third quarter and LS as the captains get ready to go to the Midfield the one thing we notice about this is this is a team that feels like it's got so much more to do there's no question about it and when you talk to dbos Sweeney when he went back and watched the tape he didn't see a lack of physicality he didn't see a lack of effort he saw the little things adjustments leveraging the football tackling all of those little things that make a difference against a team like Georgia well Dana Bo standing he's got it for the line to gain and a fresh set of downs to maintain possession of the ball but then look at kck's eyes he's looking down to the ground he ends up having to scramble and throws one up to Jake brinning stool who makes a great play for him but then they're penalized it's the gimmies it's the routine plays made routinely that Kate Club Nick has to make tonight so there's Kate clubing he'll get the start here tonight it's his 16th career start away we go with the Mountaineers and the Tigers there'll be no return from hannes and here comes the product of Westlake High School in Austin Texas Hut is 10 and five as a starter two games with 300 or more passing yards in his career three games with three or more touchdowns and what a lineage he brought to Clemson of the chaps look at those names and and that is one of the most notable high schools not just in the state of Texas but all across America especially when it comes to the production of quarterbacks and a high level of play that move on to the college level now Kate kumnick he's got to take his game to the next level he's got to take charge of this Clemson offense take what the defense gives him throw darts and anticipate tonight slot to the left Bryant Wesco Jr starts the true freshman from Texas at one of the receiving spots and this is a throw here to the near side and tripped up is Tyler Brown Mountain in run Pursuit Jordan favors the safety makes a terrific play for Al Jordan favors leverages the football really well they're one of the most difficult things to do in college football right now is tackle in space and you've got the opportunity if that slipped that's another s to eight yards of offense for Clemson terrific tackle defensively by AB that's brown in motion give is going to be to mafa trying to get to the left side the MERS closed the door quickly Kyle arnhold who let him in tackles last week in the win against East Tennessee State the first guy in the black hat to reach Phil mafa arold makes a tackle but number 11 avaran Cole sets The Tackle up by forcing the ball back to the inside into the linebacker crew and a third and long to start the game here for Clemson Clemson was four of 13 on third down last week in Atlanta they were 40% a year ago fifth best in the ACC Mountaineers held East Tennessee State to just three of 13 clck Zips it down the field wco in stride Abate safety right there and drops it right in the bucket so K clck makes it seven to nothing on his first touchdown pass of the Season kanier Roberts is deep to return for the Mountaineers a year ago app average 22.4 yds a return on kicks that was nearly top 25 in college football by the [Music] way and I don't know that this Full House of 81,000 could have asked for a better start absolutely not it's the start first of all it's the start that Cade kutnick needed he needs some confidence he needs to be able to show some energy and show some leadership through his emotions and his body language it's been a tough week for these Clemson Tigers and in particular that quarterback right there yep Robert gun thei will'll kick it away for the Tigers here's Roberts he's going to play from the three back to the 15 20 25 and forward to about the 28 yd line and here is appalachin State's quarterback and this is uh Tom maybe one of the more underrated guys nationally I think he really is and I've had an opportunity to call a couple of his games out of Freedom High School in Antioch California attended the junior college ranks at Diablo Valley Community College and when he arrived at App State he just was kind of behind the curve and and didn't win the job out right but it wasn't because a talent he just wasn't ready yet and then he's taken the Reigns and and I'll tell you he's a Riverboat Gambler he'll take some risk with the football but he'll make some outstanding throws as well shotgun situation agular gets it out of his hands and it's almost intercepted Shelton Lewis who wears the number two Jersey that Nate Wiggins sported a year ago Tom almost pulled the Wiggins oh absolutely and I think there was a miscommunication with Kaden Robinson there when you look at the depth of the route and where Joey agar actually threw the football got to get on the same page there very fortunate Joey agar didn't have to turn into a tackler right there second down and 10 give and nothing here Kanye Roberts got turned back pack of tigers looked like pton pagee 55 was one of the first guys there for Clemson loss of two on the play and now all of a sudden appalachin got themselves third and more than the necessary 10 well it it it is not an overstatement to say that Clemson has at least two if not three first round draft choices at some point in the future all within their defensive front four and that's not even considering their two and three deep this is the strength of this roster they have a handful to deal with if you're out state in the offensive front Clemson H Georgia to a score of 11 on third down last week Tigers bringing pressure there's the throw inside catch that's Kaden Robinson he's got the first down across the the 40 to the 43 agular has two maybe three really talented receivers Robinson being one Christian horn the other and then Dalton strowman they welcome back to the lineup tonight Lukes well now they're back on the same page here just reference with Kaden Robinson I think we're not on the same page on that first down attempt and you make the tackle right there if you're number if you're number two Shelton Lewis and ab State's pting so again Lewis Clemson's got a really interesting team defensively they are I mean so good and so notorized for who they are in the front seven the unknown is the secondary Tom and I heard a lot about that leading into last week and yet you know sure there were busted plays and missed assignments and things like that but Shelton Lewis is a guy who's played some football for him yeah he's played a lot of football for him and and you know guys like Jaden Lucas and and RJ mickens and Avon Terell good players good athletes had don't have a lot of starts under their belt so they're still feeling their way a little bit in the back end second and 10 play fake from agular pressure coming giving process and throws and threw it into traffic quite frankly it was toward Christian horn broken up on the play Avon Terell younger brother of the former tiger AJ Terrell so now all of a sudden it's third and the full 10 again yeah and this is where you know I stated that Joey aglar can be risky with the football this is an unnecessary throw get rid of the ball but get rid of it into the seventh row cuz you don't want that coming back on you and now Nix you know you thrown a pick six spoken as if it we've not seen a lot of Bryson Barnes running the football tonight we know it's a big part of his game but well a huge part of it I think is that it's a really long season right they need Spencer petus to recover from that ankle injury and I I don't know in this game if you want him to have 12 14 carries when you know what is out in front of you at that position and within your schedule so you want to pick and choose your moments you're right we haven't seen one and right now if you're looking at the edges of USC's defense like Anthony Lucas right there at the bottom of your screen number six they are charging down it's a good opportunity to keep one [Applause] here Barnes there's Jaylen Royals who takes one and then two big hits from East mascarenas Arnold and D Carlos Nicholson and holds on there a little sit route balls thrown high right in the zone I mean they've been trying to get this area all game long and how about the physicality he's to masarus Arnold he and his brother problem for that Trojan defense last year was and a big part last year was their secondary missing tackles and how about this guy the transfer from Washington playing his best football trying to stay there's enough lighting as it is and right now I know on you guys looking at this picture saying oh it looks like enough light to me they're going to talk about whether this is enough light to remember in the Super Bowl a couple years ago all the lights went off and the power went out be curious what it looks like down on the field cuz you see some Shadows from the players how impactful that is and what the coaches might be thinking what what you like down there uh r on the field all and you can see the top you know couple of sections there on the upper part of the stands are definitely in some Darkness but the field does feel pretty well lit just talk to the officiating crew here and it does look like we are going to get this kickoff rolling estimate about 3 minutes trying to get Utah State on out on the field and warmed up after they kind of delayed him a little bit coming out of the locker room at half all right all right so a three minute delay thank you you can see there's is some of the lights that are out and we'll see right I mean once you start going how the Shadows affect if at all the returners the receivers but that's a a good a good update I like the tight ends do it the wide outs do it these backs haven't been touched in the back Feld for the majority of the first half you see just getting North and South who doesn't love it when uh not only the backs the tight ends get involved but how about even the quarterback Miller Moss he picked up a little block as well but a very physical first half by this USC offensive unit even the wide outs when they had a couple drops guy they found a way to make sure they got physical in the Run game as well it's just a way you keep yourself active even if you aren't playing great on the outside as a wide out blocking not optional right blocking required the toughness is such a big part of what this program has been it was great it's part of what Lincoln Riley came up in remember he told us in you'll shoot Texas he like you're the quarterback and the free saf it's about toughness you got to be tough to be in Mike leech's quarterback room that's right that's a Hallmark of this program and a foundational year for this team and I think even this you want to as a head coach you want to try to create adversity as as possible this is a version of that right the lights aren't great anybody who's ever played football you've played in the backyard with only you know the car lights on or just one Street Lamp on like this is no big deal I I think for the players as I referenced the foundational year here in D Lynn's first year and Lincoln Riley's thirdd this is really notable for me guy guys in their second year in the program whether it's via the portal like Emanuel pregnan in his second year on the offense defensive line or a true second-year player like Alani Noah or this receiving cores you see all those names Zachariah Branch Duce Robinson and Company and then defensively it's kind of the same deal when you look at a lot of the impact players they're in their second year we've seen brilin Shelby on the field in the first half not seeing Mason cob tonight but bar Alexander Jamal muhamd Anthony luk is their second year and we talked to Lincoln Riley about that exact thing it's said coach do you agree with that statement and he goes Man Yeah we actually have a foundation like you feel like you're not just hitting the ground running like they did in year one when they hit lightning in a bottle year two they found some struggles I think in the transfer portal especially in the offensive line but now there's guys that know the philosophical approach in all aspects offense defense now with this new staff nutrition how you got to work how you got to go to class all of those elements I think allow this team to be really healthy guy and you look at what happened today in college football the Trojans like I know their schedule's brutal after a buy but they got away they finish this thing off healthy tonight they're going to make some noise in the Big 10 well and but part of that on the foundation you're going to go to the portal right you can't avoid it even if you want to build up which they do you want to develop your pass rushers all those sorts of things but we talked to Lincoln riy about picking the right players in the portal right to make sure that all of a sudden mascarenas Arnold steps in and he can be a leader of this team guys respond to him it's so hard I mean I go back to when I coach here at USC and I think what is often misconstrued around the country is you think you coach at SC and you get all the best players and they all come and now with nil you can do all the things that are legal in college football they're in the transfer portal not necessarily accurate it is a challenge to deal with the external pressures and expectations and the internal realities Lincoln Riley has a solid foundation in the beginning of year three in a slight delay because of a a slight power outage let's go back down to the field and R what you got R yeah another update there it sounds like now that Utah state is out onto the field they're going to give them three minutes to warm up and then will get the kick so still just a couple minutes away but doesn't look like we're going to be dealing with any sort of extended delay because of this power outage that's what head coach J dryy would like to see different on his offense that has not had that kind of power to sustain drive it's kind of felt like his whole team came out a little shell shock they settled in a little bit offensively as they get the ball wants to see that offensive line continue to hold up in passow but they got to find a way to sustain some drives and then defensively he was really proud of the way the guys kind of settled in and kept staying with the plan which as we talked about a lot in the first half guys was making USC earn their points with those long drives and then try to stand up and hold up in the Red Zone which they've done a couple of times so stick with the plan on defense and try to find a way to stay on the field with Bryson Barnes right you're all over I think they got to find a way with Bryson Barnes to create some explosive plays they tried B was bad at interception led to the late score but I'd love to see them opening up be curious if they go back offensively to what their roots are which is Tempo explosive plays taking shots of these weapons what do they allow Bryson Barn to do here when they get the ball to kick off the third quarter yoga you mentioned some of the some some of the big games some of the big losses around the country today Notre Dame falling to Northern Illinois so Trojan fans walked in happy today because they saw Notre Dame lose of Maryland and Michigan State Jonathan Smith with his first Big 10 win for the Spartans Iowa falling in a heartbreaker to Iowa State Penn State got tested today really tested by Bowling Green they made the most of that and were able to come out with the Victory and then in that huge game Nebraska and Colorado Matt rules group looked dominant absolutely dominant on huge stage the whole nation watching look this is a program that's been down for way too long I know Saturday of week 2 isn't over yet but when it is we're booking our travel cuz we're on our way to see Nebraska next weekend with as much momentum You could argue as they've had in quite some time this place the same remember what a difference a year makes Bryson Barnes last year came in here as a starter for Utah and upset USC started tonight in place of the injured Spencer petus who transferred of course familiar to people right he spent six years at Iowa his seventh year at Utah State he was a starter hurt last week in the win over Robert Morris of FCS football fares takes over gets the win last minute they go up all the way to yesterday decide that Barnes is going to start and uh what we're not seeing he you know his legs was such a big Factor last year when he was the quarterback at Utah in beating USC here at Utah State they have not run him much tonight only one true quarterback run from Bryson Barnes look they don't want him to get injured they're not the deepest at that position but I think here on this early Drive the they've got to go back to what they feel most confident and comfortable in i' create a little Tempo a little bit of quarterback run see if you can get a score here because at some point you got to take a couple shots here to try to get back in this thing all right after a brief delay for the power outage we uh continue on the lights those who are with us we play with them and uh that's what Utah State's going to do they had a chance late in that first half to maybe try and get down put themselves in position to make it a two-score game threw a pick USC took the football and punched in a touchdown at the end of the half we had such incredible heat right a big Heat Wave this week it's been very hot triple digit temperatures there were power outages throughout La being forced from the end of the kick first down uh yesterday and today and so uh you know I know you driving around home here Yogi you saw some of that and uh so the word we've received is that that is uh what is believed to be the reason for the power outage the excessive Heats earlier today now it's you know in the low 80s a little bit of a breeze but still relatively balming for Southern California Orange is going to hand it to rul fison Who falls forward for five yards so we'll see what they do here on this drive they've had success so you go back in the first drive of the game and Utah state was able to move the ball a little bit felt pretty good even on that drive before the batted ball and pick before the half so it looks like they're going to try to continue to eat up the clock as much as they can see if they can put a drive together just going first touch of the game for kyrese white and he's got a first down big performance for him last week a graduate senior made his first start in the opener had a career day went for 131 yards and two touchdowns but they've not been able to get him involved until now yeah and he was one of the better stories even of week one this is a guy who also transferred from Utah with Bryson Barnes in fact was his locker mate at Utah said look he and I have a connection we saw a week ago they got to get it going here tonight as you see again these wide splits trying to create a clean [Applause] picture barn and he just has to throw it away Rhett yeah real story of patience and perseverance right kyrese walked on at Utah earn the scholarship wasn't getting the opportunities there walked on at Utah State earned a scholarship love the respect that this program has for the way that he works talked to his high school coach this week Fred Fernandes down at Roy High School called him one of the best he's ever coached we tried to get him the ball any way we could he has another Gear with the ball in his hands and what you saw on Saturday talking about last week when he had three catches two of them go for touchdowns that's who he is by the way had three catches for his career going into that game wow that's incredible here's Barnes and there is Brock Lane the tight end a first down for him and he gets down inside the 45 to the 41 16 yd pickup again if you can give any quarterback a clean pick they know how to distribute The Rock Bryson Barnes is dramatically experienced in major college football this drive it hasn't been a lot of shifts or motions it's static get to the line of scrimmage wait the play clock to go down as low as you can don't allow UFC to adjust and you're but he has truly made a change in his body he might be the best pass rusher off the edge for this program and I think as the season progresses his game will continue to emerge this is the furthest to added the six transfers who we're starting now and this team has taken the next step so yeah it's going to be a challenge cuz that man right there is one of the best play Callers In America three man rush and there's jacobe Lane spun down by John Ross May and and we there's so many great tight ends in this league we've seen Lake McCree having a career night we still haven't seen Walker Lions the young freshman who is will be heard from right before things are through here this season I think that you you reference the weapons that's also the challenge how do you find guys flow how do you feed guys that are hot how do you heat them up Brian Jackson who got a few carries in the first half speaking of youngsters a freshman he gets spun down well you were here at the height there were playmakers all over the place well what made that era so special and I think what is developing here under Lincoln Riley is the competitive nature at every position is different than it was for him in year one and definitely in year two just in terms of you're not just allowed to just go play because you're the guy on that top of the depth chart or in that position room you got to go earn it the competitive temperament is getting to that place Walker Lions has come into the game for the first time this year first time in his career he's wearing 85 for USC and he's blocking in front of Clinton Joiner and a great block by Walker Lions he and Elijah Paige helping clear the way with Emanuel pregnant for Joiner yeah really cool story right there 85 top of your screen know a year ago he's in Norway on a mission now he's blocking inside Run game against Utah state two years ago he got hurt in the first game of his senior year of high school football and missed the whole year I mean we're loves offense but I we came out of the meeting with Dan Lim the other night I thought Rhett was ready to switch to defensive end you know I was pretty fired up there guy listening to D Lyn talk about his core principles with this defense right the obnoxious communication the shocking effort and the way that they want to attack offenses they check the box on effort against LSU feels like they're checking the boxes on the other two pieces tonight and that ability to communicate that message guy is something that D learned when he was in the NFL and had an opportunity to get nominated to be a head coach for the East West Shrine Bowl where he got a chance to learn how to stand in front of the team communicate the message and kind of help them understand what he was trying to ask of them and that's really helped him in this coordinator role as he made the transition to college I know Yogi you talked to a lot of coaches about D Lyn you talk to a lot of people about Dan what what what stands out about him and how he's been able to get things seemingly turned so quickly I the thing that really stands out honestly is how he teaches when he first got to UCLA just a pragmatic approach when he first got to USC like the Springs AR give him everything give him the whole Playbook it's no let's just do one thing really well then two and then three and when you talk to players he they say he always has a why and an answer for the reasoning behind the call and then what to do what you must do in certain calls on defense like right now on a third and six Barnes pressured and sacked ail Arnold and Devin Tomkins combining to bring down that Aggie quarterback and here's fourth down I mean just imagine playing quarterback right now if you're Bryson Barnes it looks like pressure how some of these talented freshmen always a talented recruiting class here some of these T some of these talented freshmen are now having to fight for their opportunity offense number 56 10y penalty for from the spot of the foul second down yeah so I mean it's great now that the Trojans have an opportunity to game like this to give some reps to Walker lions at tight end to give some reps you know to their running back Brian Jackson but these freshmen are really in a fight to try to find their way onto the field because of the evolution of some of those foundational players that you're talking about Yogi yeah I think just the depth at every position and right you know it from plan we've all experienced it when you walk into your meeting room every day and and the job isn't handed to you it's just different and the competitive depth is really the area that has grown so much here at USC either getting the right guys in the transfer portal or developing the right guys through high
