This is *** KCC I editorial, *** recent
viewer email caught our attention and we wanna share it with you and offer
*** bit of clarification. Last week, we opined on the start date for Iowa
schools falling on *** Friday following the end of the Iowa State Fair. In our
opinion, we recommended Iowa legislators fix this going forward. And
the message caught the attention of *** former rural teacher who wrote for many
rural students. The state fair is the culmination of *** summer of hard work
unquote and the former teacher goes on to write economic issues also apply.
Adding many of my students needed to work at the fair to earn the money
needed to help them with their school needs. We couldn't agree more with the
viewpoint of this viewer. And if our opinion led any to believe we were
advocating for classes to start earlier than the end of the fair, let me
clarify. The Iowa State Fair provides more than 11 days of entertainment. It
provides an opportunity for our young people to show livestock work or
volunteer and like the opinion of the viewer, we believe the lessons learned,
working and volunteering at the fair can't be learned in the classroom. Our
opinion is that classes should continue to start after the fair is over. We
just believe the legislature can make *** simple fix to the 2015 law that
would make it. So the first day of classes don't fall on *** Friday Friday
start dates, create *** unique hardship for working parents who need to set up
child care, protect the fair and give our school districts greater start date
flexibility. It's really that simple AC C I welcomes responsible replies to
this editorial.
