Facundo Diaz Acosta vs. Jack Draper Full Match | 2024 US Open Round 2

love the for [Applause] 15 up [Applause] want what a point that is just the third point of the match and that will be a bit of a a knock to dri's confidence cuz he threw a couple of big punches there and and the ball came back three shots in that one he must have hit he hit a couple of forehands where he thought that's not coming back you know that's [Applause] big it's going to be physical if uh they repeat those sorts of points with regularity 42 for 10 col mentioned that title in buire he also won the silver medal in the youth Olympics in 2018 in that very City stronger player now physically put on for 8 kilos over the past 12 months game di AA opening game goes to the world number 64 out here on court five what was your favorite Court to play here on the outside courts good question um what would you where would you consider an outside Court well anything that anything that's not Asher Armstrong I can give you grand stand okay the back of the picture there Stadium 17 was pretty cool smaller but sunken light grand stand good atmosphere obviously the different feeli here on court 5 is that yes it's sort of the the fifth show court if you like but obviously you have court four one side Court six the other you get that other court noise and hustle you can hear the out calls and the celebrations and things so it's got that New York hustle and bustle if you like but um yeah grand stand built in 2016 you can see in the top left of sha I think it was 20 11 Stadium 17 was was built I was still scratching around in those days so uh got a few matches on there commentated on day one and there was still scaffolding and all sorts they got it done that was the the year of the big storm as well where they managed to delay play Only by an hour from day one fantastic job love one 15 11 interesting to see for Diaz Costa we'll never know if he's 100% You' never admit that but you know yourself he's had a right shoulder injury keep tabs on that which is an interesting injury for a left-hander unusual you would think that would affect him on the two-handed back hand if it's going to affect him on anything um what's apparent already is that the first meeting between the two 11 fairly evenly matched from the Baseline yes I would say Draper is going to look to be slightly more you know adventurous player if you like looking to attack a bit more whereas Diaz acost still going to be solid I'm interested to see how willing drip will be to come to the net in this been times so far in his career where felt he could have done that more against certain opponents right on Q coming forward but a little clumsy with the volley and this guy's quick very he's got [Applause] wheels it's all part of the development for for Draper you know hitting the ball bigger a commitment to do that but also a commitment to come forward finish points that develop that side of his game very [Music] good it's exactly the way he wants the play one game all for S Ben Draper in the Dark Shades on the right there is his uh brother and uh agent working in for IMG that represent Jack he was a former US college player very good player himself quite as good as his younger brother that's always tough isn't it little brothers beating you up on court so he represents them [Music] [Applause] 15 the 11 he's got one of the higher ball tosses in tennis Diaz a Costa hasn't he goes up a long way yeah quite deliberate serve you're right the toss is is reasonably High what's the disguise like I would say it's decent I mean he gets into a nice sort of throwing position sort of side on there is a bit of a breeze though so that's really good that's finishing the point came in couple of points ago and didn't really do much with it but that time made sure he won the point yeah promising for Draper nice net coverage here just go to back that point on the Ball Toss there is a bit of a breeze you grounds today interesting to see if that becomes a factor for Diz a Costa a welcome Breeze for those in the stands my [Applause] definitely 15 the 13 he's got some power in that Lefty for huh [Applause] he's right in the middle of the pack Diaz a Costa as far as the Argentine are concerned there are nine competing in the men's singles four are higher ranked than him four are ranked below him so speaking to one or two of the ESPN Argentina staffers here this week they say he's got a chance for kundo Diaz Costa but how high he can go they're not quite sure [Applause] the longer these rallies go on should have the advantage well on these US Open hard courts I would say Draper if we were in uh Argentino on a click I might answer that differently but you know Draper has already shown that he's the one willing to get up onto the Baseline you know flatten the ball out more he's got himself a break point here this would be a a perfect start [Applause] baby wow just needed redirected he took it nice and early and there's the break two one for set Draper leads by two games to one for set [Applause] [Applause] [Music] we go time considering what the conditions could be and have been at this time of year in the first week of the US Open and Years Gone by these conditions are perfect less than 60% humidity temperatures in the medium to high 70s for those in the United Kingdom about 24 or 25° C is that right yeah just where we like it I've only been over here 14 years years so we've not lost you just yet not yet definitely a breeze though at at at Draper's back coming down the court from our main camera with that an opportunity for Dra to do just that really he use the sort of breez to push Diaz a Costa deep in the court and attack him if you were asked to scout Jack Draper and to to give a critique on both his serve and his service motion intrigued to see what you would [Applause] think just over cooked it there it's a good serve I don't think it's a great serve yet I think uh it's a serve that can continue to improve um he's a lefty he he he can slide it as most lefties like to do but one thing I would be telling my player who was facing dra was he does quite like the the flat serves he does wide to the juice tea on the ad so I'd be saying even though he's Lefty you know don't cheat too far to your left expecting the swinger all the time cuz you going to use that flat serve a good amount he made that look so much easier than that actually is it was Big Time 1 for 10 the breeze definitely helps got a shot 14 for 10 [Applause] game drier it's all the the break and leads by three games to One D US Open social media accounts are all over this tournament stay connected on Facebook X Instagram Tik Tok and YouTube as well as WhatsApp join the conversation # usopen and also via the US Open app you can get live 3D views of all singles matches there's a bcka Junior's top in the crowd I thought it was hot in midlan for a minute there no they're busy right now playing in a European tie 15 11 I find it interesting that there's loads of of argentines here but a lot of them wear their their soccer jerseys and we saw the BCA Juniors jersey supporting Diaz a Costa but fundo is a River Plate fan and those two don't like each other those two TS we can put their differences aside when it comes to tennis of course maybe maybe it's red rag to a in the corner there he he represents the Flag represents it with distinction argentine's some of the most passionate tennis supporters the sports supporters really aren't they in the world remember trying to get a seat on grand stand here when Juan Martin del P was in a fifth set no chance magnificent in the Trel Marana monesi very experienced Argentine coach Coach G Cora Tommy Robo among two of his previous charges let's first [Applause] that's unfortunate was a quality return of serve deep in the court really ripping the ball with plenty of height and spin getting the depth and getting a ball to attack but just couldn't make it count [Applause] juice [Applause] Advantage Diaz aost [Music] [Applause] from the Argentine 32 first set Le by three games to two for set you time there's many different ways to use the time change over fundo Diaz Costa just electing to close the eyes and envisage what might be ahead for Jack Colin spent the change over wondering if his shirts may be an extra size or two too big for him well it's it's not the hotest almost humid day but it's still relatively hot and humid isn't it it's not cool don't want to feel sort of heavy with all the this s going on he's busy isn't he he has across quick around the Baseline and just when you think Draper is getting on top of a point he sort of counter punches and dangerous opponent when you've got speed like he does it's like how many times have you watched Alex deur or someone like that he's got wheels and you think you've got a winner and then suddenly from nowhere he's able to get there cost's got a lot of speed like that play from Jack 15 [Applause] there's the the flat server or both in fact the swinger on the previous point and the flat one showing uh they can hit all types of serves 126 M hour wide as well it's it's a big serve it's the quickest of the match so far 30 seventh on for St of the match so far [Applause] Jack 1 14 he's got some shots di a Costa that can trouble Jack he's got a chance to break back here [Applause] oh it's a real chance miss playing with the the win behind he was on top of the point Draper did well actually just to to hustle and hang in there [Applause] Miss by [Music] much be delighted to hear the out he just hesitated slightly moving forward and that landed in he might have been in some real trouble can sometimes be the case you play someone as quick as Diaz a Costa can make you just hesitate going forward you think have a hit a good enough shot to go in but you know just that Split Second hesitation can cost you you got to commit to the shot commit to the play live with the consequences so the outcome game a quality hold to serve there especially when you're to break down break point D saved that break point four games to two now he leads by two games in this first set first meeting between these two you were on the double circuit and it was a first round match against two players that you'd never played before and you weren't sure what they were like did you do the research did you partner do the research your coach do the research or usually usually a bit of everything mhm get all the information you can some players more than others I think um some players are more specific with their game plans maybe depending on their their game style you know I think back to when John Isner was playing MH he was probably 90% about himself you know delivering his game the big serve the big forehand and not worrying too much about the opponent whereas these are two players I'm sure would be finding out as much as they could about each other you know where they like to serve where they like to serve in big moments What's stronger or weaker forand or backhand the same for on the return you you just get as much info as you can what kind of competitor are they you know do they do they dig in or or do they go away easily are they fit can they last a long match everything you want to know as much as possible these days everything's at your fingertips [Applause] well they've been able to start by going online and watching each other's first round matches if they want here at the US Open it's a lot easier to Scout and know what your opponent's going to be and going to do and has done than it used to be back in the day sound like an old old man a ripper from Diaz Costa this is the challenge of facing another Lefty if Draper whips that out wide to the back hand of a right hander there maybe reaching for it a struggle to hurt him whereas Diaz a cost able to get to the ball and just whip it down the line superb shot he's just struggling to adjust to left-handed second serve of uh Diaz a Costa ball swinging into him rather than swinging away from him on that back hand just got too close to it game little bit sloppy there from Jack 43 first set dper leads by four games to three for set l 15 [Music] [Applause] time [Applause] y [Applause] [Applause] 15 11 love that serve 31 the only way that one was coming back was if his opponent ended up on the court that Jimmy Murray's playing on next door in court six with John Pier man's doubles another one keep an eye on our fellow Scott there he is down there what doesn't know yet or probably doesn't know unless Bethany maxand has already told him that he will not be playing mix doubles this year cuz bethony has withdrawn because of an [Music] illness 14% former Champions here yeah they were indeed remember them celebrating with champagne in the play's Garden that's how you do it of course so back toback AC's and a double fault from Jack I think they'll be feeling uh Obviously good about the score line Drapers team but I think they'll recognize that it's a fairly even match yeah I I wouldn't say he's sort of well on top even though he's a break to the good yeah that's really good play I like the move forward I like the the Poise and the drop volum in fact it's now nine times already dra has come to the net he's W seven them so he is committing to that more adventurous style of play when you play at the top level it's about being clinical you'll know that you reach the quarterfinal here in the men's doubles twice each players had one chance to break in this first set Jack took his fundo didn't in the sixth game sometimes it's small margins like that that can decide a set absolutely right comes down to a few few points a few moments in a match brilliant that is just D his best love that's him evolving from the guy you know the kid as a junior he was a bit of a a bit of a grinder yep chase the ball and not make mistakes and grind people down evolve moving into the you know his his potential of playing big tennis Junior finalist at Wimbledon in 2018 Jack [Applause] body Ser in there from fundo underrated body sered maybe underutilized as well cuz it's done right is that something you like to try and jam your opponent the body yeah I mean I think especially for lefties because they can get the ball swinging the other way into their opponents but um lot depends on how big the serve is you know you need enough Pace on it to rush the opponent Jam them up depends where they're returning from as well vundo is not the biggest server fastest today 118 [Applause] that just became a bit ridiculous that point the net cord has a course hits it right back to him dper hits it right back to him another cord and then he just popped it up for the kill the second one hit it twice [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] I'm get game hold for the Argentine 54 for by five games to four for sets [Applause] John John time [Applause] spe let's first [Applause] good hustle from diac Costa that's the difference though when Draper doesn't quite work the opportunity to move forward that's almost when diakos is at his best running side to side chasing balls and just sort of countering [Applause] I had a chance to move in behind the first forehand chose not to and similar to the first point of the game just Draper maybe just retreating into his shell here slightly he's serving for a set it's easy to sort of revert to to previous type if you like 15 13 [Applause] he's five of his last six draer we got here on the court something this is you talking about the the breeze earlier not sure what that is Sweat Band or is it pop Shield off it is it's the pop Shield off the microphone in the umpire's [Applause] chair things you never thought you'd say during a tennis commentary number 418 was a pop shield on the court it's not a good time for a double fall very tight chance now this is the first time that either player has had two break points in a game what a time it would be B for Diaz a Costa be able to level things [Applause] up got away with that a little drier it wasn't the cleanest forehand 134 such a difference for him here between the first and the second serve he's won 93 % 14 out 15 first serve points for just 38 on the second how he would love another first serve here ideally an un returned first serve what a brilliant point was the first serve that set it up not the most clinical of volleys I have to say floated it a little di Costa was so far out the court no chance to chase that one [Applause] down much better than jack isn't it I like these two Ser volleys because he kind of knows he hit to play attacking tennis he needs to get forward looks like he struggled to force himself to do that off the ground so by suring you're just sort of you're putting on the table straight away interested to see if he goes for it again I would encourage it where are you putting the serve if you're Jack go for the wide one again he hit the last one so well set point he listened to you and he's taken the opening set in 46 minutes the number 25 seed Jack Draper from Great Britain leads foro Diaz aosta 6 by six games to four out 15 11 [Applause] let's let's second [Music] [Applause] 31 [Applause] 401 [Music] game that's lovely there from Diaz a Costa just showing something different look into the net three times in the first set so maybe just going to look to get forward a little more in set number two [Applause] ni be [Applause] he''s got some miles on the clock in this match so far Diaz Costa 15 yeah again that's drier with the wind at his back and stepping in dictating probably could have gone in behind it been ultimate for him but able to finish with a a good strike there that tells the story 12 winners to five he's definitely doing more of the dictating here here [Applause] today the full story is only really told when you compare it with unforced errors that was number 17 which is fine if you've had 50 winners but you don't really want a negative ratio he's 12 winners and 17 unforced and Diaz a Costa is a lot tighter just five winners but only eight unforced [Applause] wasn't the best of Drop shots but he St calm he St engaging the point found a quality pass you're a golfer you know the phrase well there's no diagrams on a scorecard it might have too much air but he's still on the point doesn't matter how you get that birdie Mr Fleming take any birdie like why sck aart I do have to throw the challenge fly I do believe you are a plus handicap golfer so no you wouldn't take a part being very modest here par is always a good score mark That's the misconception of good golf it's not all about making birdies 18 of them yes you uh make a few birdies yeah plenty of cars keep the double Bogies off and you add them up at the end and do okay let's what was that correlation isn't there between golfers and tennis players and a lot of them are very good at both Sports we like to find something to compete exactly when we finish playing otherwise I think we'd be a nightmare for our other halves better halves I should say little birdie tells me a certain Andy Murray is rather competitive in the golf course as well yeah he's been a great mentor for Jack Draper yes Murray is uh someone that Jack's always looked up to and uh yeah since uh Andy recently retired I think he's got the uh the bug for for playing golf that's for sure has he beaten you yet he not played uh played in in recent times but it's coming give him a few shots see what he's [Applause] got he's changed his Twitter handle it now says Andy Murray I played tennis I now play golf and he's changed his picture his big picture as well to a golfing driving range his ball might be in the bunker though so to be done one game all beginning of the second set what a view that is practice courts away to the right grand stand to the left Jamie Murray currently in action on court 6 the nearest one at the bottom of your screen with John Pierce it's a tight one against Genson and [Applause] [Music] verbeck a good point love to [Applause] [Applause] 5 [Applause] on had a few Drop shots in his first round win wondered if that would be the type of match he try against Jack Draper not seen too many of them so far like we did against Dugo Gaston 15 13 the way that these two have played so far today there's very little between them break opportunities in the first set for Diaz a Costa three of them didn't take any Jack was one for one that's why we are where we are oh missed opportunity there maybe just didn't quite get his feet up to the ball still should have made it love to to get an early break again in this second set just get to work and trying to cut Diaz a Costa loose he yeah he doesn't come in much that's maybe why it was just a little more Awkward than it looked 30 hit it at an awkward height with a bit of speed but he just got so late on the ball that's why it sort of flew on him his footwork was a little bit wonky really well done for Jack and guess what it's a carbon copy of the first set third game break point one chance takes it two one by two games to one second set and by one set to 11 J go time not as hot as it was yesterday but still warm very warm day four of the US Open record crowds I love the the new initiatives fan week's not new but so much more now in fan week and last week free entry great crowds and a lot of these boys girls moms and dads are are coming back for the tennis now having enjoyed themselves so much with so much to do last week it's a carbon copy so far of the first set two service holds one break chance for Jack Draper takes it now's serving up a break in a set at 2-1 15 to 11 [Applause] he took it so early disguised it well that even though Diaz Costa so quick he had no chance there yeah nice mix from Draper we haven't really seen the drop shot from him as [Applause] yet I just really feel like he's starting to get to grips with the match obviously won the first set just one break in it didn't feel as on top of the match as he does at this moment [Applause] very good from Jack stay connected to the US Open lots of opportunities via social media Facebook X Instagram Tik Tok YouTube WhatsApp join the conversation # usop Download the US Open app and love the fact you can get live 3D views now of all singles matches you can download that VI the Apple App Store and Google Play phones are out little momentto maybe post on social media make sure the hash US 1 three what would Draper hashtag be so far for this match clinical second sir reason I say that is two for two with break points one yeah main difference isn't it that's all the difference is for those just joining us a Costa had three chances to break hasn't taken any of them as I say it is now starting to feel like Diaz a Costa is just having a dip here isn't he setting a break down you can see just the body language not as positive as it was and Draper he got a real opportunity here to to make hey [Applause] I love the 13 It's amazing the part the mind because as you say deosta just starts to think and look more negative and suddenly his level just starting to drop big error on the back hand there type of error he just hasn't been making [Applause] three break points for Jack how difficult is the transition for someone like Diaz a Costa who after the Australian Open has only played three matches on hardc courts since he arrived here at the US Open in Canada Washington and Miami and he lost the first hurdle in each of them yeah he's a clay quarter no doubt in fact his uh his first round win here against gastone was his his first hardcore win in 2024 yep to levels so he doesn't have a body of winds on the surface and he's now in real danger of falling out of this match quite badly leads by four games to one second set and by one set to 11 e time there's no doubt that Andy Murray's retirement has left a a huge hole in men's tennis in in the UK however I don't think Andy will be far away if Jack or others we've spoken before about how he's acted like a mentor but it's not just for Jack is it Andy is going to be available I'm sure for any young Brits that's coming through and maybe wants to pick up the phone yeah absolutely he's always uh been a huge tennis fan first and foremost and a big big factor in in Jack Draper's uh career Jack obviously coming from Su sort of Southwest uh London area in in in England and uh that's where Andy has lived for majority of his professional career so you know struck up a real Bond and he I think I think Mentor if you like may maybe that's too formal a term but he you know just someone that's always there for to advise and to practice with and I think if Jack wants to find him these days though he's going to have to search on the golf course somewhere just hunt him down maybe at the halfway house that was the followup so they can call Andy but if Andy calls you for some golf advice would you want to let him get better so he could challenge you love there's no there's no stopping someone's competitive is that he will get better don't worry about that he's always seen Jack's potential yes he has even as a junior that's uh obviously piqued his interest you know but fact that Jack is someone that learns and listens you know that would catch Andy's eye as Welly game from draer so [Applause] far that's better you've got the insurance break he's too break up in this second set a lot of it now is's Focus just get over the line get the second set one yeah and this is where it's difficult for diak Costa because that might be a nice play on a clay Court working dfer off off the court wide but here at the US Open draer can just did do what he did there and just slam the ball through the court really do some damage 30 yeah he's he's done that a couple of times today and he hits his mark it is not coming back two aces in the first set second Ace in the second set camera person did not flinch [Applause] it's another careless error from [Applause] dra first break opportunity for fundo since the final game of the first set he's 0 for three today to start converting these get back into this match Jack serves as well as that it's not easy juice V sh Aston Villa okay we're on football top watch we've had a bcka Juniors Aston Villa Jackson Man United for Manchester United Advantage you said that like a unhappy parent that their son had chosen the wrong team get on one of those busy supporters buses up from London to Manchester his name is Colin flamming everybody it's all good fun yeah really good yes one of the best points he's played actually he yes spent the majority of this match two 3 m behind the Baseline chasing balls Draper dictating the play but look at the way he steps up onto the Baseline here diak Costa accelerates on the forehand that was a lovely strike he've got to look for more of that he has to try and be the attacking player more often in this matchup nicely done advantage and dra big incentive the winner of this will face the winner of Carlos alarz V Draper beating alarz in the grass courts of the Queens Club remember yes slightly different story at Grand Slam but still also had a win on grass 2021 Queens over the current world number one yanic CER little bit different conditions here as we head towards the end of August in New York important game this one for Diaz a Costa try and win it the break opportunity may get another one Advantage dra kick in that [Applause] [Applause] serve good hold having saved the break point now leads five games to one so for fundo Diaz a Costa K or so since the year end what else would you be suggesting he does to perhaps take him to the next tier that he wants to be yeah good question I mean he's he's clearly sort of put on a bit of muscle to try and beef up his game yep had the ability to well hit the ball bigger attack more you know it's it's easy to sort of uh suggest things watching and play here on a quick quickish hardcourt he's been outplayed at this moment by Jack D [Applause] he's clearly a very good play Fort player already he's one or two tit B are so he's got that figured out to a degree but even on Clay but particularly on surfaces like this I think the ability to to play a little further up the court closer to the Baseline to try and come in you know not not the best approach there to the forehanded ready ready for the volley just trying to add layers like that to his game you know you can hit the ball big but the big difference between doing it from 3 m behind the baseline or up on top of the Baseline you know the impact that's going to have on your opponent um so yeah spending more time playing on hard which you'll have to do now he's on the main tour exactly he'll adjust he's got something there's no doubt about that needs to find something here one of the best examples of that for me is Dominic team who was a clay Court player he was early in his career and he thought well yeah this guy could be the man to knock Nadal off his perch at Rand gas he made the final there a couple times but he he got use in his career and he evolved into a player that could play near the Baseline he could flatten the ball out more take the ball down the line a little more often Maybe the slice come to the net Etc these sort of plays that are more effective on these surfaces get used to the movement which is fundamental the ended up of course as we know winning the US Open did and this year played in his last Us open the first round against Ben Shelton [Applause] the point there Jack dra there was a part of that point you wondered would he continue to come in but he retreated back to the Baseline plenty of whip on that forehand sure B up and down in a [Applause] hurry he's been steady solid today Jack and [Applause] clinical what percentage would you be happy with as far as net points one is concerned if I offered you before you even set foot on a court I offer you 70% bite your hand off there you go and he's way above that 76% yeah 13 of 17 net points one just 2927 from Diaz a Costa that's certainly too low well take 60% net points one to be honest that the key is winning the the right ones the bigger moments come forward with the right play and get the job done there's an investment in that sort of strategy you know establishing it against your opponent letting them know that you're going to come at them at times and except that you're not going to win every point when you go forward yeah get three quarters one though that get the job done more often than not [Applause] interesting shot Choice from diak Costa EMP to ponder for both him and Mariano 11 15 good change of direction from Jack set point Advantage Draper the last three service games of Diaz a Costa Jack has had an opportunity to break in each of them converted the last two stury microphone there didn't even Flinch when it was thumped by the W look at that's having that's having none of it standing its ground took a hit didn't it J got the forand all wrong standing eight count but was never counted out [Applause] Advantage Di aan that's a tasty strike isn't it he needs to do more of that take a little bit more risk flatten the ball out yeah with more risk and come more onfor STS but also come more winners Jack [Applause] jamming this is a long one this game decide if the second set continues or we head to a third trer would like to get it he'd like to serve first in the third set if he can around that enough just just on him quicker than he would like again you come back to him being used to playing on Clay you would have more time on that ball just to absorb the return this year's been a little bit different hasn't it for a lot of players because they've gone from clay to grassp then back to Clay and then hardcore for the Olympics a chance for Jack to wrap up the second set what a serve that is Ju the ball disappears Draper disappears nice Ace first of the match for fundo Advantage [Applause] [Applause] think game finally di aosta Diaz aosta gets the game it's 5-2 Jack leads by five games to two seconds by one he wouldn't think it would uh influence the the outcome of this second set but he of course just able to hang in there he is still looking a little dejected though body language not the best [Applause] [Music] [Applause] time so during the change over not for the first time Jack with the ice pack yes and the air conditioning [Applause] unit 1 hour 26 minutes on court now a chance for Jack Draper to serve it out for a two love lead [Applause] 52 nicely done by Jack one thing to keep an eye out on over the next 15 probably couple of minutes there might be a fair bit of noise in the joining Court CU Jack Draper's fellow Brit Jamie Murray is currently 11 all in the deciding set it's the nature of the Beast isn't it playing on a a court like Court five brilliant Court to play on but you've got four and six either side you know plenty of action plenty of drama around you just got to keep your focus Tri doing a good job of that here he's the 11 insurance policy of a double break so there's no reason for him to tighten up really just keep going for the shots and dictating as he is doing really good three set points 41 [Applause] nice way to wrap up the second set 64 62 in 1 hour 30 minutes so far 6 games lead to in trouble trailing by two sets to love 15 11 that was Mariano moresi the coach of funo Diaz aost I'd be encouraging and looking for him to try something different in this set I'd be looking for him to more adventurous brand of tennis go for his shots more there's only going to be One winner if he continues to allow Draper to dictate the play Moni very experienced Argentine coach thir for 10 lights person four2 to down 403 if you're Diaz a Costa and what you've done so far hasn't worked you've not really made many inroads at all into Draper's game or given them too many problems you can't just flick a switch where do you start well he's hit nine winners in in the match the dra was 24 there in uh lies a bit of a problem he's been dictated to by the Brit to so when you're two sets down I think it's time to take the safety catch off and you know go for your shots try and play Closer to the Baseline flatten the ball out go for winners if it doesn't work well you're losing the match anyway you know it can happen where Draper could have a a dip and maybe lose some Focus but at this level you can't rely on that could expect him to maintain his level so yeah mixing the odd Ser volley you know change things up you got to find ways to to try and attack more often what was your best comeback when you played on a grand slam a grand slam goodness um nothing crazy Springs to mind probably I was the guy blowing the match more often than coming back I imine but I didn't want to mention the Brian Brothers quarterfinal and had a couple of those you came close you came close closer in the first one but really big comebacks from no either um it's not easy especially two sets down and a a grand slam has a do happen though doesn't it happened a couple of times yesterday rub and the H able to do it but I do think something has to change you know well Jack's Jack's level's got to drop because right now Diaz a Costa if Jack keeps going like this Jack's not losing the match so he's his level's got to drop Diaz a Costa's got to find something as you see be a bit more aggressive and maybe that might be a reason why Jack's level might drop shut out for Dan Evans by the way love four 1540 there's another one he's on after this match see uh what he's got left in the legs after the longest match of all time in the US Open which was played on the court to the right 15 4 six 15 13 no we don't want to jinx anything I'm not into the whole announcer commentator curse but right now it's looking strongly likely that Draper's going through and if it is him against alcaraz he could cause him problems he's already beaten him we've seen that different surface though it would certainly be a third round match to look forward to Wi we've already got FR TFO and Ben Shelton as a third round match up there's a few popcorn ties coming up over the next couple of days is in action tonight isn't he against session on Arthur as oaka as well he'll be wearing black and white with the balls 14 concentration and focus now to go along with the ability he's already shown for Jack probably about a meter and a half difference from where he stands for his first serve and then moves along for his second serve game a pepy step one G one game third set [Applause] let's first oh love that P [Applause] that's La 13 he's still cutting that pretty dejected figure here Diaz a Costa sure he's believing too much in his uh prospects an opportunity now for 25th seed Draper 15 13 he's done that all match straight for like it returning the second serve from relatively deep but taking a big rip at the ball still with that attacking intent there's not much he's done wrong today he's got a break chance guess what third game of the set he's done it in the first set of the second set another chance to do it Diaz a Costa serve in the third [Applause] set how about the hustle from Jack there and just like he did in sets one and two he's broken serve in set three and he's on his way two one draer leads by two games to one third set and by two enough [Applause] time [Music] [Applause] so far so good for Jack yeah this is pedal to the metal now get this one done and dusted in in Straits Diaz a Costa is looking like a beaten man I have to say this been a perfect performance from Draper to this stage but it's been a pretty good one played with real intent he's dominated the match 15 11 15 really good from Jack nice array of shots today that aggression diak Costa really has struggled cuz he doesn't have the best power diak Costa he's not going to overpower you Jack's really taking it to him and it's been a struggle for the Argentine 4 game breaker that way sered very well draer end of the Court where he's slightly into the wind 123d ranking 12 months ago Jack Draper and now he's the 25th seed good 2024 social media and US Open Facebook X Instagram Tik Tok YouTube WhatsApp you name it it's all there # usop 1336 well there you go finally who's that been he just hasn't been prepared to play with that much risk 15 he's got absolutely nothing to lose now two sets and a breakdown you think we would have seen that a little bit earlier than now though yeah that's the frustrating thing you know the first set was tight it was playing playing his normal game style of sort of chasing and counter punching too timid in the second set that's the way his head went down didn't really sort of compete in the way you'd expect him to 1315 [Applause] good Wheels initially by Jack to get there too much you could do about it does move well Draper does for a big lad 64 I say as a junior he was more of a sort of counter Punisher style that can help sort of develop your move movement and your defensive skills your you know strength out of the corners but now he's he's adding a bit of uh attacking Firepower to that so if Jack's next Target hypothetically his next Target is is top 16 so you're not going to face a Carlos alcaras in the third round what needs to happen why he's just got to keep committing to this uh game style that we've seen today playing playing big um and I think continuing to develop it you know I still think he can come forward a little more and get more comfortable the net I also think stay fit and healthy is key for him that's been a struggle over the past few years he he's he's got more robust you know that sort of consistent work day and day out the gym work all the little bits with the physio his physio will Herbert traveling with him now that that's key isn't it staying fit healthy having the consistency week in week out but he's a player that's certainly try ending upwards good hold 3-2 but Draper still in the driving seat Draper leads by three games to two third set and by two sets to line [Applause] this time let's go [Applause] the one break of serve in this set in the third game as it was in the first and the second Jack serving leading by three games to two and up a break 15 [Applause] 11 one of many differences between the two players so far today the ability to attack the second serve Costa has never got to grips really the D for second serve there's been a lot said about the incident in Cincinnati we don't need to add to that but what I would say is that Jack's reaction following the match against Felix o aliim especially here at the US Open it's been very good that would have been inside that head of his for many days but he's come out he said what he said and he's trying to move on I think it definitely affected him in the in the next match Cincinnati against Runa yeah but he be now you know new tournament new city new week to just do behind him that changed the past media can be a cruel place stay off it it's a big part of all of our lives and it's hard to just walk away from it or reduce usage that's where you're your team comes in his coach and his brother and everybody else so far so good for Jack and New York 24 [Applause] that is gigantic applauded even that you could see there by Diaz aosta coach he likes the ball at this height dper he's got a reasonably extreme for grip and it lets him just really flatten out that high shoulder height ball he's feeling it now 113 love the 14 let's yeah nice 15 14 the clay court press there nice disguise on the dropy shape there to hit through the ball just change the grip at the last second [Applause] 30 unable to convert the first of the break opportunities there only been one game one diak Costa service game and Jack had a chance to break that he hasn't been able to do so [Applause] juice wonder what he thought when he saw the schedule he saw that he was playing third on court five today and fifth on court five in the doubles with a against Rajiv RAM and Joe Salsbury it's not exactly easy easy double duty Diaz a Costa's got a date with Alexander ver tomorrow two good wins uh for the Argentine over in pesi pericard and Francisco selo another arent time that he beat in five long sets yesterday tough to recover and get to a level where he can uh be competitive with Verve but clearly playing some good ball another break chance for Jack game clinical once again and one game away from a place in round three and a potential match up against Carlos Al f 7 S7 time [Music] two hours on court track trer has been good chance to wrap it up nles oh yes wave from fundo love he's shown flashes of uh why he's burst or broken onto the main tour this season he's a good mover play some nice tennis at times that's a beautiful little flick down the line it's been few and far between for him Draper stepped up played big tennis and and bossed this match [Applause] love I think that's the key thing for Draper here you know you mentioned the potential third round with caros Alo as he he'll go into it and feeling good about where his game is you know the way he's hitting the ball he's he's playing big tennis he'll feel like he's ready to just do everything he's got yeah at alarz but would' expect more from Draper against alcaraz if that's the matchup than we've seen from Diaz a Costa against Draper I think when you've got a player who's had such an acceleration in rank over the past 12 months as Jack has confidence momentum comes with that belief also he's a confident lad you know him he'll go into that one against alcaraz if that's the case think he's got nothing to lose it's a free hit yeah he absolutely will and to my point you know he's going very confident feeling like he's playing well you know let's say he'd sort of scrapped his way through this one and maybe you know sort of just not hit the ball as big but outlasted diak Costa then he wouldn't be feeling his confident this has been a almost a message to himself that you know I'm I'm playing good tennis here and I'm ready for that that challenge but it's more than just confidence it's belief as well not sure Diaz a cost has had the belief today that's crunched again yep the ball huge in this third set 2 hours 5 minutes match point back in time for tea yeah what a lovely way to finish it's been an excellent performance 64 62 6 Jack Draper straight sets over fundo Diaz aosta and through to round three he also for me showed a level of maturity today that was very impress impressive yeah that celebration I think is uh
