your host Eric Triple E Engle you may know me as the former producer for the murphin Mac Morning Show on km and today the Giants looked completely overmatched as they fall 5 to one to the San Diego Padres in front of a rockus crowd down at Petco Park Mason black got the start and continued the troubling Trend that has plagued the San Francisco Giants starting pitchers it took him 34 pitches to get out of that first inning and again the San Francisco Giants failed to collect a single hit with runners in scoring position tonight it frankly never seemed like the Giants had a chance to win this game especially when you have Manny Machado on the other side mash and balls all night long two bombs from Machado and three RB he show the Giants what real star power looks like tonight and the Giants straight up don't have it we'll be we'll break it down all of it every single thing from tonight but first I want to thank all of you for watching us on the lockon Sports San Francisco YouTube lowercase locked on MLB to win $50 instantly when you play Just5 and Giants started this one out as I said in in the same way that they've played pretty much every game lately and I know Mason Black's a rookie I I know that they have all these super young guys on this team that are kind of hitting walls all at the same point in time and I I get that they're all young and this is kind of expected to happen and we can't hold all of these guys feet to the fire I get that but I'm still looking for signs of life from this team it doesn't change the fact that this team is floundering at the end of the season and it's it's it's hard to watch man this is not where this franchise should be they should be able to have more life in this like this should be fun at this point it's the year instead I'm just kind of waiting for this season to end I'm and I'm sitting there looking at the Padre's and they're just having a great time just they're just having a party out there at Petco I mean dant TR Willis in the booth talking about how he just wants to run out of the booth and out there into the Outfield and to the Tony Gwen Plaza and just go have a time with everybody else out there just looked like I think it was a sellout tonight I mean the the yard or the uh the lawn out there in left field just completely packed as well I mean it was it was jumping that crowd was Electric you could feel it through the broadcast and by the way I should mention the broadcast again on Apple TV tonight which is not my favorite I had massive issues trying to log in tonight missed that almost that entire first inning had to go back and rewatch it just so I could see Tyler Fitzgerald's air which uh let's get into it that was the biggest play of today I mean other than Mach the Machado two home runs in that bottom of the first inning Mason black was uh immediately in trouble gave up a a single to a rise and then tatis Junior singles then that's started his day back-to-back singles then the fun started for the Padre's and the Giants you know figured out more ways to gift Free Runs to their opponent and it was after a fly out to Mike kmky throw comes in as uh to Fitz as he's the cutoff man from The Outfield and he instead of relaying the ball to third cuts it off throws into second base to try and get the runner tagging from first and throws this ball all the way to the the the I mean past the right field foul line like it went all the way to the the wall on like the along the right field foul line and like almost hit the netting over there like it just it was a terrible play it just allowed that ball to keep rolling and rolling and rolling and you know there's no no Defender over there Mike Esty had to go back and and Chase it down I actually don't remember who who picked up that ball if it was Yas or if it was Lamont Way Junior who ran all the way over there and grabbed it but point being that ball rolled for a really long time and it gave tatis and arise time to both run all the way around the bases two run score on the one error by Tyler Fitzgerald and again I don't know that Tyler Fitzgerald is a short stop for the future I really like what this guy does with the bat I do not really love what this guy's doing in the field at shortstop I feel much more com comfortable with Fitz as a second baseman as opposed to a short stop we'll see what happens though because the Giants don't really have another option and uh I mean the other options Luciano right now and of course I think we all know that we're going to take Fitz over Luciano wisely can play some short too but again I think you're taking fits over either of those guys in the field which isn't great and I think the Giants need to have another plan or at least need to pursue another option at Short next year obviously Fitz has got to stay in the lineup somehow I think he's got to play second base but the terrible defense does not help your uh your young pitcher who's up there laboring taxed trying to get through this inning and then the very very next batter is Manny Machado who blasts his 24th home run of the season a quick three nothing Padre's lead and Mason black was uh floundering I was I wondered if he was even gonna get through this inning but credit the young kid as he bounced back he got the final two outs of the inning with back-to-back fly outs and then the Giants come up in the top of the second you think the least that this team can do is is is like make this inning last a little bit you know like see some pitches give your guy a break and a breather no I mean this inning was like I mean like less than 10 pitches the Giants offense so fast up and down and then out comes Mason black back for the second inning and credit this kid he had everything stacked against him and he bounced back really nicely today Mason black from that point on Pitch pitched really well I mean he uh ultimately his final slash line he gave up six hits in four and two thirs innings four earned runs one walk and six strikeouts he threw a career high in pitches at least a major league career high in pitches he also tied his major league career high in strikeouts with six and again the one walk I think that that's a really good side that it came in that first inning before it ended didn't walk anybody the rest of the game and only gave up uh uh four more hits throughout the the next couple Innings which is I mean more than you'd like to see but it's not like he he completely fell apart today he had a really nice rebound from this and we've talked about this a lot lately because we've had a lot of Giants pitcher going out throwing 30 plus Innings to start the game it's really hard to get your win back after an inning like that when you're just up there chucking for what feels like I mean 45 minutes non-stop like you're standing in the Sun the whole time at least at the time this game started you're still standing out there in the sun you get really hot really fast and it is tough to get that body temperature under control to get replenished the system get the electrolytes going all that is really tough to do and it's made even tougher when the Giants can't even make their at bats last longer than one or two pitches and you don't even have time to drink a half a Gatorade before you're back out there on the hill again uh or or half a a liquid IV I should say and the uh I mean it's it's tough it's tough when you're out there and you're just constantly battling and and and youve come into the Dugout and it feels like you don't even have time to sit down and catch a breath before you're right back up there on the mound and and that's the exact situation Mason black was in today but he rebound he bounced back nicely kept the Giants in this game gave them an opportunity to come back and win although obviously we know the Giants did not do that because this team only managed one run and uh it came in the uh came in the top of the six Michael conforto smash a solo home run his 16th of the S of the uh season Matt Chapman then singled stole second base as Lamont Way Jr struck out it was very close to a strike him out throw him out but the throw was just a little bit offline in front of the bag if if he put right on top of the bag match hatman would have been out for sure but another opportunity with runners in scoring position less than two outs and the Giants do exactly what you'd expect them to do they uh do not come up with a hit they do not score the Run they don't even Advance the runner to Third Base Padres still LED four to one despite the conforto Home Run they did tack on uh the Padres did tacked on a a run in the bottom of the fifth just before the top of the sixth uh after getting the first two batters of the inning Mason black gave up a pair of back-to-back singles to tatis in profar he was then pulled for Shawn jelly a nice bounceback game as I said for Mason black uh but sha jelly comes in and the first batter he faces is Machado and he slaps the single to right tatis scores in the Padre's lead four to zero uh that was just one of three different at bats that Manny Machado had RB's in today uh we already went through the first two let's get to that last one Manny Machado uh goes yard in his last at bat of the day in that uh bottom of the eighth inning smashes his 25th home run of the season on a flyball to left center field and he becomes the Padre's alltime home run leader and it's I'm not saying the Giants need a Manny Machado but damn could you imagine if this guy was in a Giant's uniform or like any real star player like an Aaron judge or or like I mean just anybody Juan stto anybody anybody I mean I I'll take a Christian Walker at this point from the from the Arizona Diamondbacks we can make him a star player like the Giants get compared to the Mariners all the time with their constant you know like nickel and dime moves the Mariners at least got Julio Rodriguez man where's our Julio Rodriguez we don't have anybody like that like yeah you got Elliot Ramos you got you got Tyler Fitzgerald and you got all these rookie pitchers that look nice but none of them are like Bonafide Allstars that are going to be all stars for years and years and years to come at least not yet none of them have proven that to this point it some of these guys might turn out to be just you know as effective as Julio Rodriguez in professional baseball in the major leagues but as of right now there's nobody on this Giants team that you can tag as like you know an Allstar of the future for this team I mean Elliot Ramos and and Tyler Fitzgerald are the two closest things right now and and you see how often they strike out like they they have clear obvious holes in their game they are not like complete five to a players like a guy like Julio Rodriguez the Giants just flat out don't have a star like am Manny Machado or or like any any one of these guys that we've just mentioned in the last couple minutes they just don't have that and it is so frustrating to to watch this team go up there and just look lifeless every day and it's I mean yeah Matt Chapman's nice like you got pieces don't get me wrong I'm not saying the Giants don't have some things to build around they absolutely do but they're still missing that that star power in the middle of the order that is got to do like something that Manny did tonight go yard twice and then add another at bat in where you're you're getting a clutch RBI in like the Giants don't have a guy that you can rely on in those situations to do that it seems like it comes from a different place every time that the Giants are able to uh have some success at the dish like yesterday's success was all Pat Bailey I'm sorry but I did not have Pat Bailey being the offensive Catalyst for a Giants win in the month of September on my Giants bingo card I really did not because this guy has been so bad lately and like this is just to my prove my point that this team you don't know where the offense is going to come from you don't have a guy like a Manny Machado in the middle of this order that you can lean on like a Fernando tatis Jr I mean hell like even like a jerks and profar has been playing out of his mind this year he's been slumping pretty bad lately did come up with a hit tonight but was in the middle of a pretty bad slump before he uh he came up with that hit but just had an unreal first half of the season for for proar he did and I mean the Giants don't really have anybody that can match these guys maybe maybe they have a guy like proar on their team or two but I mean you you can't tell me that there's a Fernando tatis Jr on this team you can't even tell me that there's a Manny Machado on this team and it's it's obvious when the Giants go up against teams that have this type of life and energy in them I mean just look at how awesome the Vibes were down there in San Diego tonight in fact let's take a quick break here I want to get into that on the other side because it's more than just me being salty that the Giants lost it is so indicative of the two different directions that these franchises are going I want to talk about The Vibes that were down there at Petco park tonight and just how awful The Vibes at Oracle Park were for this last homestand and just those two things juxtaposed next to each other with with the Giants just leaving Oracle Park yesterday and getting to Petco today and and just seeing how lifeless it was out there and seeing what it looks like down at Petco right now let's take a quick break get into all that on the other side and more on the lock on Giants postcast I'm your host Eric Triple E Engle we'll be right back it's toas saying we got to blame Bob Melvin the ex Padre's manager and I do think Bob has to hold a share of this blame for uh for for this season and I mean we we have to talk about the one loss record when we're talking or the one the losses in games separated by one run like the Giants are terrible in these one run games I mean not completely terrible but they're sub 500 and if you want to be a playoff team you cannot be sub 500 and theyve played a ton of one-run games this season they're 21 and 22 in these one-run games today obviously not a one-run game they lost by four so they were not very close but I mean you had in the month of August alone it feels like you had so many opportunities to uh to to win all these One one-run games in fact dating back to August 9th ver Detroit 11 of the Giants 24 games were decided by one run now 25 games and 19 of the 24 by two runs are fewer the Giants 10 and 14 in those 24 games so they are the margin is right there I mean they they can win these games they're there for the taking and the Giants don't want to take him and you gotta look at Bob Melvin for some of this because he is I mean he's he's the guy you know steering the ship he's the captain and he's made a lot of not great Bullpen decisions in these uh in these games leaving guys out there to dry uh pulling Logan web in that game where he was just absolutely rolling late I mean it's been tough it's been really tough but ultimately the biggest share of the blame needs to go onto this San Francisco Giants offense because Bob Melvin can't grab a bat and go into the batter's box I mean he he once upon a time he could have but Bob Melvin's not standing up there with a runner on second one out and striking out looking I mean how often have the Giants struck out looking in these situations it is I mean mindboggling how how you just don't swing and a lot of these are foreen fast balls we talked about these numbers on the show the other night the Giants have watched more strike three four seam fast balls than every other team in the major leagues except for one this season so the Giants I mean that is where the blame lies is with this San Francisco Giants offense and we were just talking about how they just don't have a guy to to do what Manny machado's doing I mean we're almost in October so I feel comfortable using this reference he's up there doing the Monster Mash I mean we the we're shifting into fall we got to start talking about the Halloween Vibes or something at least if you're a if you're a Giants fan because you can't be talking about fall classic Vibes this is so we got to look for something else to look forward to in October I guess it's Halloween but I mean machado's up there just just killing balls left and right and you know that it's gonna happen like you you can feel it you can sense it when he's he's got that aura that presence that that that uh BBE if you will that when he steps into the Batters box you know what he's he's the man like he owns that moment nobody on the giants has this Vibe has this Aura listen to that San Diego crowd when Manny's stepping up he's not even in the box yet like he's just you know that prior at that finishes and you see Manny start strolling on up to the plate like profar his it bad's done and you just hear the the the crowd just start to ramp up and get louder and louder and louder until they were at full throat as Machado is walking into this batters box and it's it that's it affects the other team's picture like it gets to your head you can't be you can't tell me that Mason BL wasn't up there just going holy s this is intimidating in that moment and he's not going to say that he felt like that but any rookie that's standing up there with with you know on the road with the away crowd in full throat and and their number one star at the dish who is red hot lately you know that guy it's getting in their head the Giants do not strike this type of fear into any of their opponents there's not a single hitter on this team who makes that opponent opposing pitcher sit there and go oh no like there's not a single guy on this team that you're like oh no he's coming up now every single one of these Giants hitters is apt to strike out in a clutch moment every single one of these Giants hitters is likely to hit into a ground ball double play and part of this part of you know I told you we were going to talk about The Vibes and this all kind of gets back to that because all of these things affect each other nothing happens in a vacuum right so I'm not saying that fans are responsible for winning or anything like that I'm not taking it that far but it matters all of these things matter and when when people aren't going to games because the team is bad in San Francisco and it looks like you got tumble weeds rolling around out there with how many you know empty hot dog rappers are just rolling around and in the Outfield and it's it's it's not quite Candlestick where they're literally like circling in the atmosphere but you know it gets windy out there at Oracle but point being I mean I feel like I can I hear my own claps echoing when I'm out at the yard right now watching Giants games and then you go down to San Diego and there's not an empty seat in the house there are people outside the stadium trying to just get a peak of what this team is doing this is a team fan base that believes that they can win a World Series that believes in themselves and in what they got going on and they are playing exciting baseball it was a Friday night down there in San Diego and it's a packed house at Petco it was jumping I mean that you could feel the electricity pouring out of Petco through my I would say television set but I had to watch this whole game on my damn cell phone because it's on Apple TV plus and it wasn't wanting to play nice with my computer so that was super fun but I mean it's just I mean unreal the two different directions that the San Francisco Giants and the San Diego Padres are going in it's crazy to me that the Padres of all franchise I know every you know broken clocks right twice a day right like the the even the most inept franchises will eventually find some success probably if you give them long enough and the Padres who have been pretty damn inept for almost their entire existence never won a World Series they're they're I mean they're they're making the giants look like a second rate franchise the Padre's aren't aren't afraid to throw around some money the Padre's aren't afraid to you know put put their money where their mouth is and when they want to get people in the St when they want to get some life back in this franchise going out and injecting some damn cash into it and going to get a big name free agent like a Manny Machado like a want soda when they went out and got him I mean this is a team that has shown a front office that has shown that they're not afraid to go make make a big move and how different is that from the San Francisco Giants front offense who seems allergic to making big moves all they can do is nickel and dime and call this guy up from Triple A and and and sign this guy uh for to a minor league contract and maybe he'll work out later on in the season I know every team needs to make moves to stay afloat I get it but the Giants seem to be so focused on these minute mini moves that like where is like those are fine if you complement them with big moves and big Acquisitions you got to have both you can't have just one or the other it doesn't it doesn't work that way and I I know that San Diego also uh had all these Stars last year and it didn't pan out and I know that a lot of people are going to point to Bob Melvin for that as well because the Padre's last year also terrible in those one run games just as the Giants are not very good at them this year so there is I mean I'm not saying the correlation is causation but there's some strong correlation there to Bob Melvin being in charge and team's not really winning these close games that's not been Bob's Mo for his entire career but it certainly has been lately so I I think there is something to that and I I'm not sure what it is uh I I'm I'm not in the fire Bob Melvin Camp I I do think he's a pretty good manager I like him a hell of a lot better than I liked the guy who was here before I will go out and say that right away but I mean this front office has has not really given him all the tools that he needs to have I mean a winning team I mean we thought that this team was going to be a lot better in the beginning of the year injuries have derailed them uh at at the beginning of the season and and the pitching staff Fallen apart at various times the offense being inconsistent completely throughout the season this just wasn't the the roster of I mean wasn't the talent level we thought this roster would be at when they signed all these guys in the offseason but next year is a new year the Giants barreling toward the end of 2024 just circling the drain with the loss I should mention they still sit at 69 nice and 73 with the win the Padre's moved to 81 and 62 must be nice man must be nice let's take a quick break here on the lock on Giants postcast on the other side we got some more things to talk about from this game we'll take a quick break and we'll put a bow on this show Blake snow was interviewed in the middle of this game and I said something that was kind of indicative to me about whether or not he would be back next year so let's get into that on the Triple E Engel and today the Giants fall 5 to1 to the San Diego Padres and it it's it's just been a struggle for the Giants as of late I mean they have just been losing games left and right uh just so many losses lately it feels like they lose almost every single series that they play and this team is just I mean barreling towards the end of the season there is not a lot to glean from this team right now except for seeing who's coming back as far as I mean we were wondering about Matt Chapman we are got that check in the box Matt Chapman back for next season great excellent started off the off season on a high note that's something that they haven't done in a long time that's good good so what about the other big question mark for guys that the Giants need to retain Blake Snell I I have said many a time I think that the Giants needed to unload this guy at the trade deadline I still don't think he's coming back just object or uh if you're asking me subjectively my opinion I don't think Blake Snell is gonna want to come back to a team that is as mid as the Giants I just think it's that simple I think he wants to go to a team that has a better chance of winning and I don't think the Giants provide him that best chance I could be wrong he could he also is a Boris guy maybe he just wants more money so who knows what he does at the end of the season but he did drop a hint on the Apple TV broadcast when he was asked about his future with the Giants uh since Matt Chapman signed and Blake snow said after he kind of hemmed and haod said that he's focused on the present and if the Giants approach him about an extension before the end of the season will go from there so to me that means one the Giants have not talked to him about an extension like just just off top Giants haven't talked to him so I don't know that they are are thinking of of bringing him back I'm sure the Giants would be more than thrilled to bring this guy back next year but that tells me that these two sides aren't even in negotiations yet and that tells me this thing's probably going to go to free agency I mean not all free agents need to uh uh work on deals during the season a lot of a lot of guys don't want to be doing the the money stuff when they're trying to also do the baseball stuff and I get that but that's why you have an agent and Scott Boris not having that communication with the Giants one does not surprise me at all because this is just how Scott Boris does business this is the same guy who made Matt Chapman and uh and and Blake Snell wait all the way into the off season so he he he did mention multiple times that he likes San Francisco and that he likes the fan base and I've said before I think the vibe of of Blake Snell fits in really well with the vibe of San Francisco I just don't know that this guy's gonna want to come back and play for a team that was as lackluster as the Giants were in the second half while this guy was playing lights out baseball he won the NL PCT picture of the month award for August in his six starts in that month the Giants won two games it's not very good I mean that's not exactly inspiring a ton of confidence so I'm not sure that this guy's going come back next year it concerns me that the Giants haven't even started to initiate these uh negotiations because what the hell are they waiting for as far as the San Francisco Giants are concerned you should be starting as many points in the offseason like as as much of the free agency as you can start you need to start that right now I mean don't go and break any you know bylaws but like if you got a guy that you know you want to extend what it's not like you gotta keep that guy focused on winning games so you can get into the playoffs right now just sign him go call a Boris and get that deal done if you really want Blake Snell back but to me I think that this means that it's unlikely that Blake Snell is gonna come back next year I the the he did not exactly fill us with confidence as Giants fans the way Matt Chapman did by saying how much he loves the area how much he loves this team how much he just wants to be back I didn't hear Blake Snell say any of that I heard him say the fans were cool and the fans were great which if you went to any games in the first half of the season the fans were not very nice to Blake Snell so we'll see what happens I'm not filled with confidence in this situation so I don't know man I don't know as for the Giants as for the rest of this team they look pretty bad like just this team did not seem like it had a chance to win this game today they had six hits they were all scattered for the most part this team is allergic to rallies allergic to hits with runners in scoring position and allergic to wins I mean they're 69 and 73 four games under 500 it is September 6th I mean again I stopped looking at how many games back the Giants are of that final wild card spot a long time ago because it straight up does not matter the Giants are not making the playoffs time to build towards next year and thing number one well they already did thing number one which was resign match happen thing number two they need to do resign Blake Snell that is the thing that has got to be at the top of the agenda right now for the San Francisco Giants and far Hanid and I think we all know after giving out that Chapman extension dudes coming back next year for sure because guys who are about to lose their jobs don't usually hand out six-year extensions for1 150 plus million dollars that usually just does not happen so we're reading a lot of tea leaves here I'm I'm thinking the tea leaves are telling me that Blake Snell's not coming back for the Giants that farh Han side he is and past that there's a lot of stuff that needs to happen for this Giants seemed to be uh competitive next year a lot of guys need to take steps forward Mason black showed me some stuff today he showed me that he's got that bounceback ability and and after that that just you know laborsome first inning and taxing first inning he bounced back pitched pretty well lasted four and twoth thirds so not the longest start in the world but man the bullpen needed it because after they pitched eight Innings yesterday they've been pitching seems like you know five plus Innings almost every single day with the Harrisons and the bird songs and the snells not being able to pitch deep in the games the last time through the rotation you needed a guy to step up and do it today so thankfully Mason black didn't just have to you know get out of this game after one or two innings was able to go four and two thirs save the bullpen arms a little bit even though the Giants lost we're taking moral victories at this point in the season because that's how bad this team is that's just where we're at with the San Francisco Giants don't forget we got San Francisco 4 49ers this weekend so you're going to want to tune in to the locked on 49ers postcast
