In the hospital because of the West Nile virus. The cases are from northeastern Wisconsin. Joining us to talk about that and other health topics, doctor Bill Hartmann, clinical trialist with UW health. Since about is exaggeration, but about half of our viewing area will be heading to northeastern Wisconsin or the Northwoods this weekend. Doc, is this becoming more of a concern than the last time we talked about it? Well, a slightly bigger concern than the last time we saw it. You know, we now have three confirmed cases in northeastern Wisconsin. Two of those cases have passed away. One has been hospitalized. And so this is the time of year where mosquitoes are kind of bad in the morning and in the evening, mosquitoes pass the West Nile virus on to people. And so you have to protect yourself against those mosquito bites so that you yourself can remain as healthy as possible, as much protection as you put on, however much Deet you cover yourself in, 1 or 2 of those suckers is going to squeeze by. How immediate would we know? And recognize the symptoms of West Nile if we were to, unfortunately, get it? Sure. And I think this is an important point that, you know, up to 80% of people will never have any symptoms. But within a couple of days, typically people who are going to develop symptoms get fever, chills, muscle aches, rash, these are, symptoms that that can be can be treated. The virus itself doesn't have its own treatment. But we can we can sort of contain these symptoms. So we can prevent it from going to our brain and our meninges and form kind of a meningitis, which ultimately is what really makes people sick, puts them in the hospital and even can kill people. That'll get your attention for sure. Let's talk about kidney donation. We've had a story on last night about how kidney donation has become that much safer, but I want to start the question with it was never a dangerous proposition to begin with. Correct Right. So living kidney donation is a very important part of the kidney transplant program. 90,000 people in the United States are on the wait list to get a kidney. And so this can help shorten that, that wait list so that people can get a kidney much quicker. The procedure itself is really a very safe procedure. It was never terribly dangerous, but there was, you know, the death rate of somewhere in between, say, two and 3 in 10,000. Now, the newer data from the last 30 years shows it to be much less, closer to around one out of 10,000 people. And so it's a very safe procedure if this is something that you're considering for, for somebody, for a friend or relative or even somebody that you don't know, I this is a safe procedure and something that that you should consider if you can. I think that gives our viewers a lot of peace of mind, because you usually are doing this out of love for a loved one or someone who's very close to you. So I think it's just, if anything else serves, that this is a safe procedure, that can be done and can save a life. So, Do
