Columbus Blue Jackets fans pay tribute to Johnny Gaudreau after hockey star, brother killed in crash

And today we want to talk about some tragic news in the hockey world. Columbus Blue Jackets, star player Johnny Goodreau and his brother, Ma Matthew were killed by an alleged drunk driver. This happened last night while they were biking. Now. Goodreau was just 31 years old. He played 11 seasons seasons in the NHL two with the Blue Jackets. We turn now to WBNS sports reporter, Adam King and Adam, you've been in downtown Columbus, we understand all day watching fans pay tribute to Goodreau. Talk to us about that. Yeah. Yeah. You know, it started this morning when the news came out and tragedy really hit at Nationwide Arena and it was just one flower that someone walked up and laid here at the doors of nationwide. And since then you can see what it has grown into fans coming from all over to mourn the loss of Johnny Goodreau and he may be Johnny Hockey, but there is no mention of what happened on the ice here today. The stories shared are more about the man that he was the kindness he always showed fans as many did waking up this morning to the news and coming to the only place they could call home and then seeing those five words that seem truly incomprehensible. In loving memory of Johnny Goodreau. I saw a young CBJ fan came up here adding his hockey stick. We've seen fans constantly throughout the day all with one thing on the mind paying tribute to the good family and remembering the man that Johnny Hockey was always love. Blue jackets. Go over here, Johnny chose to come to Columbus superstar. No one does that right. He loved Columbus. He spoke highly of Columbus. He wanted to raise his family and he talked about that all the time. And so as a community, I thought it was important for him to, for us to back him up and show him support and his family support. Um thoughts and prayers are just to them. That's it. It's really been that sentiment all day long shock. And so many people remembering that Johnny Goodreau picked the Columbus Blue Jackets when he could have gone anywhere in the NHL. He said he wanted to build a home here. He wanted to build a family in Columbus and he chose the blue jackets and over my shoulder just in the last hour, they've added a one and three and fans have begun writing messages to Johnny to his family saying so much. A lot of thank yous on there. One that really stuck out to me is one that said, thank you for believing. In us. That's what so many fans around here feel that he genuinely believed in the Blue jackets and gave them hope we will have much more on this coming up at six o'clock for right now though. And I mean, I grew up partly in Columbus as well. I've got family there. It means a lot to know that somebody chooses your city. Adam. Adam came from our sister station WBNS there in Columbus. Adam. Today, the Cleveland Monsters cavs and rock Entertainment group released a statement saying we send our deepest condolences and endless love and support to Johnny and Ma and Matthew's family, friends, fans, teammates and colleagues. And just hours ago, the man suspected of hitting and killing the goodreau brothers went before a judge. This was in a virtual hearing as you can see there. State police say 43 year old Sean Higgins attempted to pass a car on the right when he hit the two on their bikes. The Higgins allegedly told officers he'd been drinking prior to the event and was even drinking while driving. He's facing two counts of death by auto, reckless driving, possession of an open container and consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle.
