Episode 1- Vols Sweep Gamecocks And Other SEC Scores

welcome to the Nerdball podcast I am Patrick brown with and I'm Daniel Helms and this is where we talk all things SEC baseball we are Die Hard Carolina fans South Carolina of course um so we love talking about South Carolina so that's going to be our main topic podcast but we also love the SEC and baseball in general so we'll be getting to give you knowledge about the SEC as well so we're going to start with Carolina the final just came in number one sweeps number four 24 excuse me ranked South Carolina 4 to one Daniel what are your takes from this series I mean I don't know what we were doing with the pitchers I mean I don't think we should have taken uh two pitchers taking two pitchers and only four Innings that was a really bad strategy from Mark Kingston I didn't really like it we had Chris V go to Eli Jones go to Matthew backer go to and Dylan ECU go to so I think I don't know I think it was the rotating two strategy but it obviously didn't work well as I get we only allowed four runs but why are we using four pitchers on a game three right ahead of the SEC tournament what are your thoughts I don't like it but speaking of the SEC tournament Carolina starts on Tuesday and I see a little score check so vaner Ville is up 12 to4 on Kentucky meaning Vanderbilt holds on game here in the bottom ninth inning we would move to the e seed if Vanderbilt lost we were going to be either the seven or the eight we controlled our own probably gonna fall to either the eighth or anyways going back to your um question Daniel I think it was just about taking one from Tennessee Kingston really wanted some momentum today um not really sure about the two innings from Dylan him out a little bit longer he gave up a hit and a walk no strike no earn run Becker and Jones struggled with two earn runs giving up yeah that was not good now the real question is start on Tuesday as you might be lower you'll probably play early afternoon 1 two o'clock depending what seed you get Daniel who do you think will start on Tuesday I think they'll just put in Eli Jones but I have an important thing about the Kentucky versus vanderbelt game assuming that uh that van that vanderbelt is able to hold off the wild cats uh that would mean since Tennessee won today they will be the SEC winners you heard me right they will be the SEC Champions tied with Kentucky actually Kentucky clinched yesterday said they will that Tennessee has a tiebreaker they won in Kentucky okay very very star powerered series for any of the Kentucky fans out there that was that was great y'all y'all put up great work against some of the best teams in country and even though the Gamecocks did get the best of you I was I was at that game game two very interesting game where it was uh we were down by three in the ninth inning and we hit bomb bomb bomb and we tied it up we put it to the 10th and then Blake Jackson hit the two run Homer to win the game let me also give you a very big score right now based on um Carolina's projection in the SEC tournament Florida is beating Georgia 12 to3 trying to take that Series today in the rubber match they were in the top of the four so early but have wins Z could jop Carolina seating as well um which could definitely affect how we play against a higher team this tournament yeah that that would be really that would be that would be crazy uh Florida had has an interesting season so far they really did not start off well at all even though the um the the amazingness of Jack kagon but I believe I mean I'm going to double check myself here oh I can't I can't leave this call I believe that uh they have ended better than they have started which that that was big and I think they're gonna make a regional now but LSU you think they're out P I think they are out um I think it's too little too late for LSU um you know they just have had on offseason losing a lot of people um but I don't think elsu makes it I think Florida will make it as you mentioned they have ended the season better if they win today they are two games over 500 with Jack kgle own in the crew so going back to South Carolina um what do you think was one of the main reasons this weekend I know you mentioned pitching but what else do you think was one of the main reasons that Tennessee swept us I think it's to do with uh momentum I mean you you can't really come back you know getting swept at home that's always tough so to get swept at home then pay uh then go to the number one team rank team on the road that's never going to be good never what you want and I think it really really hurt us especially yesterday we had a chance to win yesterday we were up three to I think it was and we just blew it I think that just killed our The Vibes for today I don't think our players were very happy with us at all so Mark hingston better say some a few words before the SEC tournament cuz we got to get hot at the right time if we want to make it a home om but that's that's seeming less and less likely as the days pass on speaking of Mark Ken there was um couple decisions that were questionable yesterday first starting with not pulling starting pitcher Garrett gy after five and two-thirds Innings after he gave up the home run to Christian MO two outs left let's let's not I don't agree with you there he was ding a pretty good day pretty good day G gy speaking of him he really bowled out until the run Homer was up then it was 43 balls and after life out of all of us um Kingston also made a couple question moves um to the bullpen with um starting left-handed pitcher and right-handed pitcher Parker Marlet um all of Jake McCoy and Parker Marlet coming in instead of maybe Chris be or Matthew Becker yeah that th those were some very very very questionable decisions right there I don't think I agreed with them I do think leaving Garett geny in the game was good especially seeing the play of Parker noat or marlot or whatever the the guy's name is uh he his his play I don't know I liked Garrett game he was in control for about five innings there and then just kind of lost it in the six so that that's kind of what happened I like to say Garrick gy he's pitched two games as a certain pitcher transfer from Liberty um he three has like a 3.81 erra but I think in two games as the starting pitcher he's been car on his best starting pitcher all year yeah I I definitely agree if you look at almost any stat you'll see Garrett gy on the top for the CX oh I'm just looking uh in the top of the fourth Florida up on Georgia 12 to3 jeez the the Gators are piling it on here in the fourth inning all TW oh yes all you you're hearing this right every all 12 are from the same inning I repeat all 12 of their runs are from the fourth inning they have a 12 run fourth inning that just happened that is impressive speaking of elu we were talking about them earlier I may take back that comment that they're not going to make the tournament they're actually 35 and 20 no disrespect to the Tigers I'm sorry I did not do my research they are currently up 80 on Old Miss right see that but how good is O Miss actually not very good 27 and 2 a 500 team obviously Carolina won at the beginning of the season but I think LS may make it in as a three possibly a two seed obviously the defending national championship Champion you know what I agree I did not realize that they're about to sweep the rebels yes sweep the rebels they took Friday night 5-1 over the rebels and sorry Thursday night 5-1 and Friday night 42 this Thursday Friday Saturday stuff kind of throws me off sometimes they really they really have had a great end to the season them Tigers after after uh after beating Texas A&M I big I want to focus on a really big series um not only in SEC play but in all of college of baseball number three Arkansas number five Texas a n they are at a rubber match today currently bottom of the second second agies up four to one on the Raz backs um after the Aggies took game one and the Razer backs took game two um great series and what the Aggies and the Razer backs both have done this year because the Razer backs with um all pitcher of the year sec pitcher of the Year Hagen Smith on the mound hasn't lost a game but what do you think about him um I mean I don't I don't think anyone's been losing their game because it's three and five are the two teams that are playing right now it's it's very interesting um the the current score is Texas A&M four Arkansas one but with such a good team like Arkansas you can never really feel like they're down by three it more feels like they're down by one or so like I get they're playing a great team in Texas A&M but I don't be surprised you see an Arkansas comeback here yeah Arkansas definitely struggled with the offense when they came to Columbia South Carolina one of the low in offenses but that offense has been clicking as they put 10 runs on A&M last night but A&M was one of the best offenses in the nation so going back to South Carolina what do you think the reasonable hope is come SEC tournament play and could we improve our seating for the NCA tournament reasonable I would say we have a chance to make the semifinals at at best sadly I mean it sounds sad and pathetic but it's just uh it's just just not a good situation for the Gamecocks here it's um it's pretty it's pretty bad um are you thinking two seed or have we slid ourselves down to three seed with six straight losses and maybe a seventh in the SEC tournament I think if we if we win an SEC tournament game or two stay at that two seed that's fine but if if we lose first round I don't know I think we could sadly be looking at a three maybe four seed depending on how much of a blowout it is I saw um a regional projection having the Gamecock um with Clemson and a couple other that Clemson Regional um but I've also seen another one that has the Gamecocks um in Arizona's Regional with Fresno State and UC Barber so I don't know um couple couple placs still have us as a host um I don't think there's a way you can put us as a host right now don't ask me it's what the internet says I pretty sure you see the surprise on my face when you said a couple places still have that us as a host I I think they'll be wrong on that but we'll see more so what did you think from TY Good's performance on Friday obviously it was not very good not his best game not his best game he had some trouble slipping off the mound I don't think it was necessarily the mound Tennessee you know with the weird um the turf feel but then dirt sometimes I think Tai's a little different as a starting pitcher you know he was a starting pitcher at the chareston but I think he's been a great Bullpen piece for be a starter for this team I think what happened is he was not very used to starting and then in Knoxville very it's not the highest capacity stadium but they fill it up almost every game so maybe the crowd got him got to him a little bit especially when they when he started allowing runs you know it kind of snowballed like I think the crowd got his head the weird field got in his head uh the the the just the the star power of that Tennessee lineup I mean you just got I I don't know any way other way to describe it freaks on every single position for Tennessee so I think it got Tai good I think we learned that he can stay as a a relief for a closing pitcher let me just say that home crowd environment is really underrated I mean they bring good crowds out there might not be the best Stadium but I mean when they they bring some fans there yeah it's certainly no Founders but it's good Founders um we Carolina have been struggling on offense the past couple of games do you um relate that to anything specific um I relate to a little bit of the coach you know if you look at some of the other coaches around South Carolina they're a little more fun when you're down take Shan Beamer for example when you're down uh he'll be patrolling the sidelines like hyping people up same with lont pis same with Don Staley you see you don't really see that in coach Kingston uh he he's got to be a little more energetic you know when especially Paris Paris when he's down he's not afraid to let let uh stinks say something positive you you'll see him you'll see him patrolling the sidelines very happy I think that needs to be the same as with Coach coach Kingston the the baseball aspect is a little bit I know the game of baseball is a little bit slower but it's in my opinion the greatest sport in the world and um um I think he needs to have a little more positivity on that Dugout Christian Moore just at us alive this weekend I think two or three homers can't remember off the top of my head he's going to be top three SEC player of the year um great second baseman as well made a couple great defensive plays what do you think he just got the Carolina pitchers this weekend what was the problem with Christian Moore this weekend I don't really think I think he was just Christian Moore and you know usually when a guy has that typ type of series it's usually he was on fire something happened it was insane but um that's just your normal Christian Moore I think he just came in and did Christian Moore things I mean the defense the defense isn't usually that good from Christian Moore but I mean not that isn't usually that good but it's not as good as we saw this weekend so that may have been saying that was good but the hitting that's just your normal Christian Moore we got a couple big games tonight um Auburn Alabama can also decide some seating here us and Alabama kind of close um that is at 6 PM um let's see how Gage Miller and the Alabama Crimson Tide play it is at Auburn tonight so interesting game and then there's also a game going on right now in Starkville Mississippi State Mississippi having a good year we are all tied up at zero in the top of the second inning I know we're coming to you a little early today um we just wrapped up camera wanted to go ahead and get your analysis on this and what we think is going to happen um Gamecock just bull pin today just didn't extend out dyanu had a fine start Kingston didn't want to push him out come SEC tournament I think today it was just a little not much like there wasn't much in the game your pitching sta gives up four runs your offense can't do much you're kind of deflated at this point it was just a little too little too late today was the story um yeah I agree yes yesterday the story was obviously questionable pitchers relievers ending the game but yesterday I mean against number one team in the nation you're going to have to score more than three runs but I definitely think it should have been a winnable game but definitely didn't get that done yesterday and then Friday it was just High good struggles so that's kind of what I think happened all three games this weekend kind of feeling the same thing I I pretty much agree it was just you just looked over at their Dugout not a lot of energy felt like I I think the guys maybe thought that they didn't have anything to play for but my opinion we definitely did it didn't look like they were giving it their 100% And you know if I think it was getting to them because you saw a lot of over swings you know a lot of anger I think they were getting in their own heads a little bit yeah um definitely for sure so if you're just tuning in Carolina gets swept by Tennessee SEC tournament starts on Tuesday for bottom seven through 10 seeds obviously um other teams play Wednesday Thursday um and Hoover so Gotta Have rest some guys maybe that's what um thinking with the two innings but Gamecocks don't look great you you kind of have to feel a fo after our Georgia I think of yesterday a lot as a Saturday Georgia game kind of same thing happened with Garrick gy obviously he was on the mountain BL times do you think it was kind of like that George G then they felt the same resemblance and that kind of took it out of them I feel it was a little bit different because in the Georgia game uh it was gar gy was performing well very well it was kind of random I mean it wasn't really it was weird that they took him out and then they took him out obviously the bullpen exploded into a piece of just trash and um I think this time it was more that Garrett Gandy was doing good but then he did bad instead of just the bullpen doing bad so we took him out and then the bullpen also did that as well I just want to highlight a bright spot colen had an amazing weekend um let's find his stats here he was I think he was six for nine this weekend I think is I think he was six for nine this weekend um Cole M was a really great player this weekend and that was one of the bright spots offensively you know you can down on Cole um to help you through game what do you think about Cole's performance Cole was very very good this series and he was a great leader as a catcher I heard the announcers kept saying how good of a leader is I completely agree there's anyone who's being a leader it's Cole M and he he was hitting very
