Intro [Music] here's Brody Brazil well well well wasn't I making videos on this player and this team and this topic here on this channel back in November and December and here we are on the first day of March and it has come true late on a Friday Matt Chapman is officially a San Francisco Giant I'm not going to say I told you so but you know actually yeah I am going to say I told you so I had a real good feeling this was a high possibility knowing Matt Chapman knowing his Ambitions knowing the situation but also realizing that it takes two to tango you never really knew what the Giants were going to do Chapman is represented by Scott Boris he wanted top dollar the right opportunity I'm so glad for Matt and for the team and for the Bay Area that all of this Has Come Together Matt Chapman is a San Francisco Chapman to Giants Giant for the next three seasons this news just broke I'll react to it I'll give you some initial thoughts here are the basics it's a three-year contract as reported by John Haymon $54 million in total the payout structure goes like this 20 million for this year 18 million for next year and 16 million for the third and final season Matt has opt outs of the contract every single offseason but I say this is good because it's all set up still with three plus weeks of time during spring training yeah Chapman and Blake Snell still out there there's a couple Marquee players which just took a really long time to find their teams for this season and Beyond but in Matt's case and in the Giants case there's still plenty enough time left of this spring training camp for him to get to know the team feel like he's a big part of it get comfortable get all his swings get all his reps and he'll be ready as a giant on opening day so this is late no doubt but in the end looking back like by June and July you'll never remember that Matt Chapman didn't play the first full week of spring training games it also kind of makes you wonder this is another Domino to fall is there one move one more move for the Giants that they still might make you can obviously pick your favorite names in terms of the free agents that are definitely still out Chapmans Backstory there but that's the basics on the contract for Chapman and again here's his backstory he declined Toronto's qualifying offer of $2.3 million for this upcoming season he wanted to become free agent so he did that for the first time in his career and now after a little bit of a delay a three-year deal $20 million this season and obviously some flexibility moving forward in San Francisco he just won his fourth goal glove at third base in the American League we also know he's got a platinum glove somewhere on his mantle who even knew that was a thing well most did but uh obviously he brought that to his his resume several seasons ago with the A's his defense is solid everybody knows that everybody of course is going to look at his Bat and what it can do he hit 255 during his time in Oakland but just 226 across the last season uh three seasons with Toronto now some might also point out the hip injury that he suffered while as an athletic and maybe the recovery is part of that and trying to get things right the batting average has been lower than the career total recently you could also chalk that up to playing on Turf playing indoors in Toronto who knows a bunch of different Why the Giants things there but the type of player and most importantly the type of person Matt Chapman is to a team I think is what's ultimately important yeah and also the Gold Glove caliber defensive play you're going to get at the hot corner so why the Giants why Chatman in San Francisco why is this a good fit now the contract is for three years I put all this together in advance I said 5 to seven who knows maybe they can resign him but a possible Cornerstone type player for this team and I'm talking about the personality to go with the performance and I'm not here to tell you that I know every Giants player or the chemistry inside the clubhouse in recent Seasons but they need a good vibe player they need the team DJ type player that is Matt Chapman how do I know well because I witnessed that witnessed that firsthand in Oakland they need that type of leadership and responsibility and drive and passion it also really helps that he's one of Bob Melvin's guys and he's one of Matt Williams guys I mean think about this for San Francisco you get a former giant as Melvin the manager now you also get Giants Legend at third base Matt Williams now coaching Matt Chapman the third baseman in San Francisco I realize this isn't Candlestick we can't get totally nostalgic here but the idea of this Legacy if you loved Matt Williams and if you love the way he played as a giant I mean this is literally what you're getting the almost exact same type of player in Matt Chapman the established Clubhouse leadership like I said that's evident I think the Giants need that as much as they need a performer on the field they need somebody who's going to you know you know take care of every ground ball hit to the left side of the infield in third base he'll do that but they need so much more than that to really get this chemistry thing going in San Francisco Third Base obviously for the Giants is an important position that could use some stability and I know every body is going to say what about Casey Schmidt what about some others that could also play Third Base this season you tell me somebody that's got the experience there like Matt Chapman and I'll defer but nobody does and Schmidt and others oh by the way this is kind of weird March 1st today is Casey Schmidt's birthday so he's probably out at at a birthday dinner finding this out that Matt Chapman is joining the team but look there are other infield positions to to be played and I think that's just simply the case Matt ch is going to be this team's third baseman for this year for hopefully the next couple years let's hope the contract doesn't have any issues he doesn't opt out and he stays in San Francisco and all goes well but yeah you're going to have other other positions open on the infield so Schmidt and others are just going to have to find a different place to play Chapman at Oracle Park defensively they can still be in the lineup if the bat hits they'll find their way defensively into the lineup I also want to point this out Matt Chapman and playing home games at Oracle Park he's a guy with a right-handed bat who has power to the opposite field U that is a little more than most I mean look at his spray chart from 2023 yeah a lot of singles to the left side of the infield but look at the doubles to right center field I mean he is not a not a prototypical pull hitter from the right-handed batters box he goes opposite field a bunch look at some of the home runs right down the right field line they got a couple triples almost to dead center there but a lot of doubles on the right side of the baseball field and I think with Tripes alley out there with the short porch in right field the high fence out there Matt Chapman's going to do some damage in San Francisco and again I know the batting average is out there I know the strikeout percentage is out there to go along with Chapmans career stats this spray chart but let me look at the career stats for chappie as well as the 2023 MLB percentile rankings this is a dude who barrels up baseballs to the tune of the 98th percentile in the league hard hit baseball's a 100th percentile in Major League Baseball he's a guy that when he can square them up consistently he's not only a hitter for average but he's a hitter for power and again you look at his stats here across the career average of 240 hopefully he can once again be 1520 plus points better than that the on base percentage at 329 sure he's been better than that so hopefully with some health with a fresh start in San Francisco playing again Outdoors on natural surfaces you're going to get a Bob Melvin very productive Matt Chapman defensively in the field but also at the plate and yeah like I said also as a giant San Francisco fans are going to love this guy and I know how happy he must be right now not only to get his deal done but to go back and play for Bob Melvin you talk about hiring in a new manager hiring a manager that's kind of a magnet to good players well here's one of them that kind of comes with the territory of Bob Melvin Matt Chapman probably considered that greatly when he signed where he signed for how much he signed and what he wants to do in San Francisco Bob Melvin Matt Williams and Company and not only that but the opportunity to play in California the state he's from I'm very excited for Matt Chapman and yeah I had a feeling this was going to happen I had that instinct I had that sense I may have talked to some people in recent times just to kind of feel it out would he really like to do this and the answer was obviously yes but it's also a business and they made it work I'm happy for you Matt Chapman and I can't wait to see what you do with the Giants you made it here to the end of the video you know I appreciate that Thumbs Up Down Below also don't forget to subscribe to the channel so I can definitely see you back here next time
