so are we getting to a point with what we've seen through the first two prese preseason games small sample size where we could potentially have a debate about who's going to be the starting quarterback for the Patriots for the majority of the season I don't think well majority right because if they decide Drake May is ready at some point and put him in I I think brassette will open the season as a starter I I think that's always been the plan and it continues to be so like the Patriots would not say this uh and it may be that that they don't believe this either but I I I don't think for them they don't want to be in a situation where where the failure and negativity that comes with being a rookie playing behind maybe not a great offensive line maybe not a great skill position group compounds and then becomes like a crushing thing for the kid right once they realize they're not at that point that he can handle the bad things that will happen the mistakes he'll make uh and that the and that the potential for negativity is not going to weigh on him and and stunt his development that's what most of these guys are looking for in terms of when it's the right time to play this guy and I think when the Patriots get there with Drake May um then you'll see him because man like watching him throw the ball and actually not even just throwing the ball last night but I thought he looked comfortable in the pocket I thought he looked comfortable moving in theck pass play was the scramble where he took off yeah he looked good now you took that sack where obviously you didn't see the guy I you know that's going to happen right but I thought I thought you saw a lot more good than bad and and if you're a Patriots fan you watched last night I think you have reason to be excited it's just a matter of they want to make sure they bring him along the right way so that he has a long career well applying that same logic though when we start talking about the negativity building up with the quarterback what about the head coach because this is a season where they're trying to develop Gerard Mayo after 25 years of bill bich so if you're not playing the quarterback that gives you the best chance of win how does the stench of the losing that we expect the New England Patriots to do impact Gerard mayo and him being able to implement his program no I guess that's true and and and look I mean you have to I guess in this situation like the 21y old quarterback is seen as the guy you don't a wreck but 37's pretty young for a coach and we don't and we don't know yet if if uh he can do it they believe he can obviously look I I I think that's I wonder if the Patriots plan has to change due to events of recent weeks right because they thought they were going to be able to win with defense and in a span of a couple of weeks you probably lose Christian barmore for the season he's got a scary medical situation obviously um he's got to take care of that but in the past we've seen uh people with the with this situation that cost them a lot of time and and then you trade mat judon so up front your defense is a lot worse than it was 3 4 weeks ago and I wonder if like the Patriots have to look at themselves differently than they were when training camp opened uh and assess that but I mean I don't know what you do like their line doesn't look like it like it's going to be very good their skill position group of receiving of pass catchers doesn't look like it's going to be very good like I I think you're setting the Young quarterback up to fail and I think if you're the organization given the investment you make that third over all pick the amount of money you pay the third overall pick I think that's got to be the priority and that's why I've been saying as a Pats fan don't ruin him don't like don't just let brassette or even zappy play if you need and just just don't David caret with the Texans do not ruin it we're talking with Dan Graziano ESPN NFL reporter here on on Sportsman like presented by Progressive Insurance Dan how would you describe the last two days for the Atlanta Falcons oh you know fun I I think it's been fun like they had they had guys that uh I think are you know proven veterans at positions where they needed help and and if you're this is the thing fans love the most right like you go out and get the big name and um you know Matt judon has been I mean obviously high level player as a pass rusher uh the last three years he got hurt last year um you know he's 32 and and the Patriots didn't want to pay him uh and we'll see what the Falcons do about paying him uh but uh yeah I think I think for in a team that's in their position I think these are good moves because you have you know questions on Def defense you feel really good about what your offense is going to look like and you're a winnable division so yeah I think that's uh I think those are those are good strategic moves by the Atlanta Falcons the last couple days gr nobody in Cincinnati wants to call it a hold in or hold out but Jamar Chase is at practice one day then he's out the next now he did travel with the team to Chicago for their second preseason game but where are we with the Jamar Chase Saga and and how do both sides proceed The Season's not that far away it's not it's it's three weeks away and um and I think when I was there I was asking running a franchise you could have the Hall of Fame coach or quarterback play for 32 years in a row where are you going on this well see now I think the time frame changes the question right you say for 32 years in a row like you would take the coach because the the you how many you're going to have at your best case scenario you're going to have four different quarterbacks in that time right I'm sorry let me let me rephrase not a singular not a singular person it's coaching and and play in general yeah I mean my first thought when I saw cuz I was in the um conference room and I looked up and I saw the thing on the screen uh my first thought was quarterback like like instantly like because like if you're trying to win championships then I think that's the thing that that can Elevate you to a place where you're better than the other really good teams right like if you have high level quarterback play um that was my first thought but I can absolutely see the case I mean like like that's I think it's a great discussion honestly I mean ideally you want ideally you want both and you're the Chiefs but uh that's a good answer gr but no I I I I would say quarterback but I I don't you know it's not it's not the strongest position I would ever take that's for sure yeah so gr I I mean speaking of quarterbacks like last night the one that uh everybody wanted to see was Drake May with the New England Patriots and I thought he showed really really well especially considering the contrast of what the offense was with jacobe brassette in the first quarter and a lot of questions about this situation you know they're being tight lipped and I think the organization doesn't want to say too much because Jamar hasn't right Jamar hasn't been out there talking about it and and and they want to respect that and respond in kind so the Bengals have done this in recent years like Jesse Bates a couple years ago was a franchise player right and and he played out the tag and played really well they got to the AFC Championship game uh and now they have Higgins in the same situation he's practicing he'll probably play well too he knows that's his best way to make the money he wants to make so they really believe in the relationships they have with these players and Zach Taylor and Jamar Chase talk all the time about the situation Zach uh says you know I let him vent and then and then we tell him this is where we stand and and uh and things will eventually work out for you but is he going to want to play like like but when you say things eventually work out I mean that that that means that somebody is going to have to move closer to the other party but but when like Justin Jefferson wanted a new contract last summer didn't get one he was in the same position time line wise as Jamar Chase is now and now he ends up a year later being the highest paid wide receiver if that's your worst case scenario as Jamar Chase then yeah that's pretty good so the question is like how insistent is he going to be on getting a deal before this season and does that include willingness to sit out real games because if it does then that could change the team's position on whether they want to give him a contract uh on how they want to handle it so I I think it's a big week here coming up after the second preseason game does he start to practice because really you do want him on the practice field for a couple of weeks you're not worried about how Jamar Chase is going to play but you know training camp comes with these ramp up periods and if a guy's been holding out or holding in or generally not practicing you want to make sure to ease him in that takes you know by rule five days right like before you're doing full speed onfield action so they're burning daylight here so I I think it'll be interesting to see what where this goes in the next week I didn't get the s they've they've talked they've had conversations I didn't get the sense that the that the Bengals were likely to extend him this off seon um possible yes but I don't think at the level he's looking for they're prepared to go there right now so uh how important is it to him how determined is he to get that deal done this off season uh and and how long is he willing to sit out to make that happen those are the key questions right now you'll see Dan Graziano and get up at 8: a.m. eastern on ESPN gra thank you always for your time we appreciate pleasure as always coming up are we bad and bougie next on Sportsman like on ESPN Radio tomorrow on ESPN
