yes we are experiencing very very high power demand in the province uh because of the extremely cold temperatures extreme cold temperatures in Alberta have set an alltime record for power consumption in the province leaving many wondering if the electrical system can meet the Power demand a langon resident on Thursday night who experienced a power outage emailed CD news to say that they were in a complete blackout saying they watched the Kei of electrical infrastructure explode keeping them worried on the frosty night and hoping their your homes didn't freeze in the meantime ASO manager of communications says Alberta's Electric System is challenged last night we set an alltime record for power consumption uh of 12,384 megawatts that surpassed the previous alltime record uh which was set back in December of 2022 again uh when there was extreme cold so solid says despite additional challenges like a couple of generators that are offline and getting very little wind and solar power on the grid Alberta's electricity system has more than 20,000 megabytes of install capacity which provides sufficient Supply to meet the demand you know over the peak period today between 400 and 7 p.m. um you know things could we may end up having to use backup reserves um to keep uh you know the lights on to keep power going um but at this point in time we're confident that uh you know we'll continue to operate as as normal Alberta's minister of affordability and utilities Nathan neudorf also saying the province is well prepared we do have a very good system and we are very great we are very thankful and lucky to have as much uh natural gas generation power as we do to get us through these times when when weather incidents don't allow other types of generators to generate to their full capacity and that's why we stand up for albertans and make sure that Ottawa and the federal government there realizes the natural realities of living in an Northern climate albertans are advised to conserve electricity where they can especially during the 4 to 7:00 p.m. period of time when it hits PE demand in time when people are coming back from work in Calgary Sylvia narango sit
