Yes, mark still very early. We do know from past cases when an officer is killed in the line of duty. It doesn't take long for the memorials to start. I suspect before this day is done, you'll see plenty of that here at Dallas police headquarters. But another thing that happens when an officer loses their life in the line of duty is you see a ton of support come from all over and that is what we saw at the hospital. In fact, as we were there overnight, we could see the colleagues of the fallen officers showing up to lend their support. Not only that but to help escort the family into the hospital. They got on each side and saluted them as they went in. Dallas, police sent a team to go get the family, bring them to Methodist Dallas Medical Center. Then throughout the night, we saw more and more officers showing up several dozen waiting near the front of the door, police cars just packing Colorado Boulevard to the point that they had a few officers doing traffic control. Then around three in the morning, they quickly first prepared to get in position for the procession that took the fallen officer from the hospital to the medical examiner's office while we were out there, it was Fort Worth police sending officers over trying to keep us updated on what was happening. So Fort Worth lending their support to their law enforcement family here in Dallas. When Dallas police finally did address the media, they talked about that support. We asked tonight and this morning for the thoughts and prayers of our city for not only those who are recovering in the hospital but for our fallen for their family and for their loved ones and for us as a department as well. Yeah, we got some confirmed details from Dallas police, others including the identities of this fallen officer and the other officers who are still being hospitalized have not been released yet. That is certainly information we hope to get by the end of the day or in the near future, Martin. Ok, Chris, we know you're working on it and this morning we are working to piece together what happened that led to this tragic scene at the hospital. Yeah, I want to get you to Tiffany Liu now who is live in Dallas where police say this whole thing began late last night and we know this is a developing story. Tiffany, what's the latest? Yeah. Well, Mark Cara here on lead better. This is where it all started right now. We're not seeing nearly as many officers as we were just a few hours ago. But I can tell you that this is still very much an active scene. This section of lead better for several blocks is closed from Mars is down to University Hills. We know this happened after 10 o'clock last night. Sources tell us an officer was responding to a call here and those sources believe he was ams Dallas Police Department confirmed this morning that officer was shot inside his car. Two backup officers came and they were shot as well. Now this morning, I listened to the radio traffic from after the shooting, you could hear officers were doing CPR on one of their own as they were waiting for the ambulance to arrive. And you can hear the panic in the voices of these first responders. They know every second and every minute counts after their three officers were shot. One that is down to cr right now, the other two have been transported. I don't know what elements of them they are going to seven is one essential. We're still waiting on that ambulance. Where is it? So as we all know at this 0.1 officer died, we know that two of them are still at Baylor downtown recovering. I can tell you what I know of their conditions, that one is critically injured while the other was shot in the leg and is expected to be ok for now. I want to send it over to my colleague, Natalie had who was in Louisville where the story continues after the scene where I'm here now. Thank you, Tiffany. We talked about how officers were trying to help their own as that was happening. You mentioned the CPR other Dallas police officers jumped in their patrol units to chase the suspect who tried to get away in his own car. He drove north into Louisville that brings us here along I 35 North Ses freeway. Still a very active scene behind me in our frame. Right now, you can see a plethora of evidence markers. You can also see officers taking pictures of inside the suspect's vehicle. Also next to the suspect's vehicle is the weapon he used. You may be able to see that now if it's not too dark on your camera right now, right now, Texas DPS, Dallas police and Louisville police are all here. Now, w FAA obtained a letter sent to the Louisville Police Department from their, their chief. It says that just after the suspect shot the three police officers overnight, he began to flee driving his car north. As we mentioned, Dallas police chased the suspect into Louisville. The suspect reportedly pulled over here on North Demons freeway got out of his car with his weapon and that is when Dallas police shot and killed him. Now for that letter, Louisville police were not involved in the shooting but they are helping in the investigation. Now, the suspect's weapon is described as a high capacity rifle. It is still on the road behind us and where the suspect's body once was, it is now still lying there. And you see the suspect's car as well. Look at the scene elsewhere behind me like we mentioned lots of evidence, markers, shell casings lying there. We also see many law enforcement police units and many of them empty. We see other officers to the side of frame speaking to one another. We are working to gather more details from this scene and we will bring them to you as soon as we get it for now, I'll send it back to you in studio Mark and Ka Yeah, really complex situation. Thank you, Natalie and our senior crime and justice reporter Rebecca Lopez joins us by phone this morning. Yeah, we know that you were up late last night making calls talking to your police sources and you have been working to find out some new information for us right now. What do you have? Well, what I know from sources is that an officer, a rookie officer who had just gotten off training was sitting in his squad car near A Y MC A. It's unclear at this moment what he why he was parked there or if he was responding to some sort of call, but a suspect approached his squad car, shot him in the head, that officer was killed. He never even had a chance to call for help. The dispatcher heard a noise, it sounded like the officer was trying to say something. So the dispatcher concerned about that sent two other officers to check on the officer when they arrived. They got there, they saw the suspect standing near the squad car at that time though. They thought that he was talking to the officer. They didn't know that their fellow officer had been shot. So they started to approach that vehicle. The suspect turn around and opened fire, shooting one of the male officers three times that officer is expected to survive. A female officer was shot in the face. She had surgery. She too is expected to survive but is, you know, in stable but critical condition. Now again, as Natalie reported that they got into the pursuit into Louisville where they opened fire once he stepped out with a R but my understanding is they have recovered at least two weapons, a rifle and a gun that they believe were used in the course of this, you know, horrible, tragic event. And again, at this time, you heard from the pio doing a press conference chief Garcia is not in town. He is trying to make his way back to Dallas but obviously a very dark day for the men and women of the Dallas Police Department. Yeah, those details are just so disturbing. Rebecca and I just saw uh when I looked at um X that um you know, the chief actually tweeted out um the picture of the badge with the black band across it and he just said no words. So, you know, you, you know, these people, um, a lot better than many of us and there's the photo we're showing for you right now. Um, what, what's going on in his mind? Can you give us any perspective? Well, I do know, you know, obviously this is very disturbing. He hates that he is not here and trying to make his way, you know, back to Dallas to be with his officers because typically you would see Chief Garcia at the scene and he would have been the one that would have given the news conference. So he will also always reiterate that last year over a dozen officer involved shootings and in almost all. But I think one of them, the suspect opened fire on officers first and now there will be this massive investigation being conducted by the Dallas Police Department. The district attorney also has a team that goes out to investigate shootings. And then you also have the Texas Rangers that will be involved. I suspect that we will hear from Chief Garcia either later today or tomorrow and we will eventually see the body cam footage and some other, you know, details that will come out from Chief Garcia Rebecca. Thank you for your hard work overnight for sharing that insight with us this morning. And again, uh Rebecca referenced the public information officer for Dallas police and she just asked for thoughts and prayers this morning for that officer's family. The one that has been shot and killed, the ones that are recovering as well. And we've seen support from other local law enforcement for or pedy, especially, you know, really helping out in a day where they are facing so much mourning in the Dallas PD. Yeah, and overwhelming support. We saw that procession earlier from different police cars around the area.
