well the story in the Mountain West Conference last year was a job that coach Brent Brennan did at San Jose State former assistant to Gary Anderson in Oregon State we always mention that last time the agies and San Jose State played was in 2018 so that's a period of time that I'm sure you haven't kept up with the Aggies very much well no I did because of Coach Anderson and my relationship with him and some of the guys on the coaching staff and then also I've known Blake uh for for a while now also so definitely uh staying been cluing in and and and paying attention I will say the last time we played against uh them in 2018 that was not a fun trip uh that was like a 4-Hour rot Canal um but I don't think of fle well that was back in the period when you know 3 and 22 in your early years at San Jose State uh what did it take to turn a programmer we watched Gary Anderson do it at Utah State but in your case what were the keys you know a big part of it was uh recruiting the right players and and investing in the program which our Administration did and then uh you know continuity of Staff we've been able to keep the same coaches for the most part and uh keep that leadership consistent from like our teaching and our process and I think that's been really important and then um you know philosophically just keep finding ways to to move forward right you mentioned 3 and 22 those first two years were really hard um you know how do you come back from you know when you get beat as badly as we did at Utah State like how do you come back to work that Tuesday or Monday or whatever when your players come back like what are you willing to do and and I felt like we did a great job of staying on track even though we weren't playing good football yet we did a good job of staying on track after those tough times well this program is at another level now obviously how do you maintain that what did you see in the spring that makes you feel good about this team again well I think we got some really impactful players returning obviously starting with our quarterback and some of our players in our defensive front but um you know I just think there's a healthy Vibe around this team there's a healthy Brotherhood they care about each other they work hard together they enjoy the process together and I think that what that gives us a chance to play good football certainly with the success you've had from the start you had to yester to last year I assume they were the job offers and uh obviously you didn't show any interest in them apparently I'm in a great situation I grew up in the Bay Area I grew up coming to games at San Jose State my you know my dad played there my mom was a cheerleader you I feel like I'm right where I'm supposed to be you told a story on the U video for the Hall of Fame award and it was a story about Jack Snider a guy I uh he he's coming back he came up uh in your Lombardi uh so we talked about when he built a squat rack in his garage during the time when you're all shut down how's that for dedication is that typical it is with him that he's a really unique young man really really smart super high GPA he's in he's in the process of getting his MBA at San Jose State right now and he's also a fantastic player he's interning right now in a commercial real estate in the South Bay he's just really smart kid and he did he built a full squat rack in his in his garage cuz there was nowhere to lift right the we room wasn't available like in our County in our state right he couldn't do anything so he got creative tell me about the guys that'll be here uh from San State Nick starkle great quarterback and and Kate Hall Nick is an awesome kid you know he really did a great job of kind of getting into the team uh building into the framework of the team cuz he wasn't around him right he he was here for 5 weeks we went shelter in place he was was gone for 4 months then he came back and we started practicing again working out so um he did a great job he's got real arm talent but he's got great leadership I think when you talk to him you like talking to him he's got a big smile really outgoing personality he's a great great guy and uh I think he's got a really bright future as a football coach whenever he's done playing and then uh Kate Hall is everything that's right about college football good student good man great player uh he's you know he's confident in who he is um he's always about the team he's just he has been an unbelievable person for our program the entire time he's been here I'm so grateful he's part of it and you know he's a San Jose kid right down the street so um a local kid doing right by the Spartans is pretty special is there one thing a key thing that if it clicks in this team has another really good chance to compete with about anybody you I this the biggest thing is if we can just focus on just right now like just the moment like that's the challenge of it to me right we have the expectations of last year right and if we'll just worry about this play or this practice or we'll be fine if we're like you know we're getting ready for southern Utah and If all we're talking about is USC and we're going to get our Buzz kicked so the thing that if we can keep that focus on right now we'll have a chance to be a good football team again is that your job of course it's mine all of
