it's a Friday and we're talking football non all football all the time this is another edition of football Friday with JJ and Alex presented by G2G bars on 975 the KSL Sports Zone all right welcome back everybody it is JJ and Alex 975d KSL Sport Zone he's Jeremiah Jensen I'm Alex Ki thanks for being with us on a football Friday yes the voice was right we get to do this every Friday today we are at the Temp View Thunderbirds football field where by the way I walked across that thing it's a different it's like a NextGen Turf now even on top of like the new new Turf like it's like a thicker blade it's like it's they continue to advance the technology of the field Turf and this is a brand new field it's uh it's pretty but I'll tell you it's a cooler day today still very hot those those black beads inside of that that that uh pulverized rubber whatever it is that they put in the field ends up ab absorbing all that heat and it's going to be uh at least a hot one on the field for a minute but uh beautiful football day we're almost I I don't want to say we're because I don't even think we got into the are we in the 80s even at all today like I'm trying to think if we're still probably in the 70s 76 it's pretty mild it feels good perfect weather so uh Stevens and Sylvester of course Sly as always joins us on a football Friday Riley Nelson were anticipating his uh well really what what we should do is just sit and wait for him you know I think the listeners would appreciate that we really can't start the show until ryy gets look I'll wait he is bringing the booze he'll never get away from that that's why he's late they'll never get away from that he thinks we're in larmy not Provo somebody send him the wrong memo I'll bring the fireworks and the alcohol hey rile if you're listening we're in Provo not lar me thanks Cowboys appreciate you you shouldn't have made that trip to Evanson uh my son was like and they're open 365 days a year Dad I'm all I'm aware I'm aware you can get fireworks he's like and they have grocery carts that you fill with fireworks in these stores I'm like yep yeah that's their Costco man they don't even go to the regular groming you can get your fireworks your lior liquor and your ammo in a Drive-Thru no good for that I don't know if that's still the case but when I was growing up that was an actual thing that's great some people some people call that the American dream I mean first time I saw that should be Wyoming slogan American dream love that first time I saw fireworks liquor and ammo the American dream Wyoming I saw the drivethru liquor the first time in Miami oh my it was 23 and a half hour that cuz they couldn't be open for 24 right they weren't yeah so they got to shut down for 30 minutes that is so it's a slogan on the side of building 2 we've got a problem hey America we've got a problem we need to talk about it all right yeah um yes BYU versus Wyoming heading to laramy 7 220 ft uh they're very very proud of that the fact that the high plains are is a hard place to play even with a down Wyoming team I don't know how down they really are they lost to two pretty good teams and we were finding out now look we were wondering okay you uh Arizona State Kenny Dillingham they get they they go two and0 and then this week they were going down to Texas state who's in like a top five top belt Contender possible group of five playoff Contender they look they beat UTSA and UTSA is supposed to be pretty far up that list of group of five teams and they were they had to go to San Marcos and win they came back and won that game against Texas State say what you will about that that's not necessarily like the toughest opponent because you're not that familiar with them but it's Arizona State the bar was low and they were exceeding the bar absolutely um and they beat the pants off of uh off of Wyoming Wyoming then loses the next week to an FCS opponent last week Idaho but we know that Idaho is better than Idaho almost beat uh Oregon in the very first week by the way Oregon still hasn't figured it out right wondering what Dan landing's trying to figure out we talked about their quarter Dylan Gabriel all off season long he like what are they seeing uh I don't know how many times you played Wyoming in your career slide but it must have been probably all four years and it would have probably been that means you've been to lar me a couple times too one of your favorite places to play just a lot of energy there oh what well first my freshman year first thing that I will never forget it is um I was starting my freshman year you know I it's coming out we won I think we just beat TCU the week before and Coach Whit puts one of our D lineman on kickoff right next to me and he falls on kickoff and falls right into my ankle and I got a high ankle spray took my starting job away from me so I didn't get it until like the end of next year of the next year so that's a that's a traumatic memory and then that game that happened in laramy that one happened in laramy we got that breaks beat off of us man I was there it was terrible I traveled to that game Eric W had a 35 yard fumble recovery at that point was 31 to nothing we got the break off so you talk about the nightmare experiences that good that 2016 was a good team sure you guys got up there and you and you got spanked by a average Wyoming team there was two and four at the time yeah but they seemed they seemed like bullies back then like these big country cow tipping you know beastly guys up there I know you think those are all complimentary but uh but that was my flattering way to be described is that was my first time lar me out ofas big beastly man oh he just what kind of a gal are you dating well she's kind of the cow tipping uhy giry she girthy legs beastly woman oh my gosh oh my goodness okay so but but I mean either way it's not an easy place to go and play no it's not I don't know why though like I mean like I've seen I've seen so many games there in ly go the way of just teams going we did not expect this to go this way well I think the accommodation are better now than they were back in 2006 we had like this Shack that we stayed in and uh I did one of my favorite movies it was uh I think it was lucky number s oh yeah was the movie we watched night before but we all had like these Salsbury it was the worst meal ever Sal like we're in Wyoming and we can't get real steak we just get hungry man yeah that's what it felt it felt like the TV trust me the Wyoming Cowboys had top sirloin not you guys but it was a terrible fet terrible experience we slept like crap the weather was bad I even think the power went out during the game or something like that um but yeah it was the first experience of inclement like Terrible Weather too so it was just a bad game all the way around bad things happened there yes yes for a lot of and then you hear all the stories it's cursed up there was there any piss backs that's what we want to know I heard about that and I did not experience that that's the real question I thought that was a nickname for one of your favorite players one of the players the running back oh see JJ these games are fun because he's like I know the history he gets extra Insight he puts extra insight as to how the uh the mental state of the average Wyoming it's not like it used to be but the uh the hospitality in laramy is uh not kind well I will say this though our media it's probably calmed a bit some of our media uh colleagues were like you can't even stay in Larie they they they gouge everybody coming styen you got to go to Cheyenne because stay in Fort Collins maybe even Denver yeah you got to stay you got to stay in Cheyenne you know 45 minutes an hour away yeah just so you can just so you don't have to pay and that's what we didn't do $300 probably should have no that's you know what there's something to be said for that where you stay uh you know not in the in the very Town itself especially when they know like this is part of our advantage so I think it's places like larmy right because we had to do that when we the place like did it say on the outside color TV like now available I'm telling you it was on some kind of poltergeist you know old like some kind of freaking oh I know sacred uh some somebody was doing a Ouija board right next door I promise you that's what it felt like walking in I was I was SP I'm like is this noral no you know what it was you know what it was because I my my siblings and I always made fun of my parents and we'd go Mom Dad where are we staying they're like oh this other place and I go okay settle down we don't know the name of it is it a motel or a hotel okay you're bougie do I you get the question like if the Utah football team is staying at if they are parked in the parking lot and the doors are facing them to their rooms it's not going to be a good game it's not going to be a good game terrible uh look you could still you could stay and lar me tonight for 53 bucks I don't know where pull the trigger what are you waiting for I wouldn't want to do it jump on I80 right now SES are more expensive than I8 is not closed for once hey good for that so there's no snow yeah yeah so drive on I80 look there's going to be an overturned semi at some point we know that we know there's going to be an overturn sem don't stop in Rollins and just keep going to larmy we've got a lot of today to talk about all this but um right off the bat the number one thing is is that the quarterback situation has to be figured out fine whatever but what you do know is that you're not going to be getting LJ Martin or Hinkley Rapa who are your rb1 and rb2 they feel I don't know when a coach says no we feel good about our running backs uh you know enck naah and uh Miles Davis but those are your third and fourth string guys is there a version of being like no we love those guys if you really like what your offensive line is doing is there a version of like oh no we're actually good we're fine or is it a little bit fake oh with coaches talking like that I I think there's there's a hidden message with all that because here's the thing is like the players he what the media says too right so you're kind of delivering a message through somebody so somebody else can hear it as well so you want to uh bolster your your your people on that but you you just got to be straightforward with with everything you guys suck this week get it together and be better next week I always appreciated that type of coaching um for me because I was like look I know I have the capability there's a reason I'm a D1 athlete right and so if I'm not cutting it then okay let me know because if I'm want to go to the next level I know that they're not freaking cutting no slack right so be real with me and and actually help me get better and so uh that's what I always appreciated about coaching but I do understand that like there are people you you can't treat every you can't coach everybody the same you can't talk to everybody the same some people don't like hard coaching some people you have to massage a little bit better than that and so U I just think that is strategic one so you have to understand who they're talking about and what message are they trying to get across in this case I think they feel pretty confident in their offensive line in what they've seen and you combine it with the opponent and I don't know that they're too worried because I think that there's some trust there and you we looked at the last game nahini scored right and there was a crucial play in the fourth quarter uh and there was multiple plays but there was a crucial play where Miles Davis gets the ball and he goes on for a big run he's on a fourth and one yeah you have two running backs that while um they're not your number one and number two th those are guys that have made plays for you this year and you trust them so you're not going to get the high level play of an LJ Martin or or what hinley rotti delivers but those guys will give you their best and that offens of line has looked really good through two games and again we talk about laramy and Wyoming and how weird it could be maybe they get it all together this week but that team has been trash and their front has been awful you probably feel fine with the situation hoping that you get LJ Martin and hinley rotti healed up by the Kansas State game when things really get serious because that's when you're going to need those guys so do you feel like that should be a focus to try to get ready for next week because for me I don't I I I I think your quarterback is more important no no going I great Point Sly we had this discussion yesterday about you can this about a quarterback 1550 yards rushing or you have your quarterback kind of be back to you have a quarterback right now who had a great start to the season in game one but it was against an FCS opponent and they didn't put a lot of pressure on him he got more pressure in that game against SMU he made three crucial mistakes now he made some really good plays right I don't want to just harp on him for the turnovers I don't think that's fair to him he made some great plays they won the game that matters but those three turnovers were G right there there's some plays where a ball gets tipped or something happens it's that's football fault yeah those plays are like dude what are you doing what are you doing and those are the same dude what you are doing what are you doing plays that happened last year and then all that I don't I'll call it PTSD starts coming back especially with your coaches they're like come on man you can't have your quarterback be you saw Kanani this week say you take care of the dang ball right it's the stinking ball he called it stinking football he clean it up a little bit but you know what he's thinking in his head oh I know and so Sly how important is it this week to them for them to get the confidence back in their quarterback and he needs to go out there in my opinion and lar me and just absolutely roll those guys and put a lot of points on the board and a lot of stats and that's what you got to do even as a parent you got to be like all right this is you we're going to put you out there I know your capabilities go ahead and make it happen this game is all you you have it on your shoulders but you let them know that day in advance you don't do that on game day yeah right you got to mentally be prepared for for football you got to mentally mentally prepare multiple days in advance and at the quarterback position especially like now Isaac Wilson has a whole week that he knows that he's probably going to be the guy this weekend right and so with that red laugh look we're putting it in your hands make the right decisions take care of the football and score some dang points dang is that colani would say that score some dang points and and and and get us the victory let me tell you there's a hook and A-Rod and in in colani May they're not going to hesitate to use the hook if they feel like that's what A-Rod said yeah um that's that's been public so like you know it's it's time to for Jake to go out there and clean up some of that stuff and really put some points on the board uh coming up a little bit later we'll play some of the uh things that colani said about taking care of the sing football but also uh what this the running back depth is like uh with his team right now we'll get back to that as well around the corner we have a couple things to bring up here it's uh it's a a lot of things a lot of different players that you anticipate seeing having a good game this weekend uh showing up if somebody's not playing then you have to have some other guys show up and be that uh that that that star that you didn't necessarily anticipate and maybe it's not even the guy who's at that position that you're replacing maybe it is a breakout big maybe the McKai Bernard has that extension of what he had last week he just keeps going and has an an insane day and it helps out Isaac Wilson to be able to have an even better day himself uh who are the people who are going to show up maybe Eno naah runs for 110 yards you know on 12 carries you know maybe as a big game there are all sorts of players who can come in and make a difference we'll talk about those and uh who could be those difference makers stay right here with us it is a football Friday we're at T View High School we want to remind you uh every week of course we are helping people recognize the Youth Sports Volunteers in their neck of the woods with the Hercules hero of the week submit that nomination by going to KSL sports.com contest and you can listen every Thursday afternoon JJ and I roll out who those winners are and we celebrate those efforts of the volunteers who make an impact with the youth and the sports in our in our neighborhoods uh and in our communities it's the Hercules here over the week sponsored by Hercules First Federal Credit Union and beehive meals we'll come back more to go on a football Friday stay right here 975 the KL Sport Zone it's a Friday and we're talking football nonstop stop all football all the time this is another edition of football Friday with JJ and Alex presented by G2G bars on 975 the KSL Sports Z and welcome back JJ and Alex 975d KSL Sport Zone uh the game night live game of the week is uh here at temp viw high school tonight Temp View Thunderbirds taking on the Springville Red Devils coming into town uh so my kids we live by Davis High School they won last week they beat uh oh who did they play last week boat raced Mountain Ridge the week before they blast Kars last week was it KS 80 to zero yeah 80 to zero that def that offense is rolling they're going uh it may it reminded me of this because South Alabama play Northwestern State last night and they it's they won 87 to10 now what's interesting about this is and our our degenerate Gambler producer Jeremy his ears will perk up after this because uh they a bunch of the a bunch of the bets got voided in the game you know why because the coaches got together and they shortened the game by six minutes and so they got together and they just said you know what let's end this thing early they came together ran the clock didn't didn't run the clock it wasn't like the game tick down they uh got with the referees the referees just took the rest of the time off the clock W the old mercy rule in the uh that's Mercy Mercy that's I don't know I don't know the word basketball is much of a thing anymore but when I was a teacher uh we uh like they were like hey come help and so like we'd run the clock and stuff they didn't they never put a kid out there to do that but like right you go help the clock in blowouts here's a tip for anybody out there or even if you're doing like wck League kids like maybe eight and under as it takes down like 40 403 402 401 you quickly you have it set on the clock you click it down go to 2 minutes yeah yeah then boom and it goes from four to two and you lose a minute there but it's good it gets a blowout with bush leag like that you got to play likes to oh yeah s wants the only time you learn no mercy sweep the leg it's like what happened well so yeah that voided the uh that voided a lot of bets uh there because according to DraftKings there must be five minutes or less of schedule game time left for bets to have action unless the specific Market outcome is already condition unconditionally determined the last part is crucial however as the over under bets of the total uh was set at 60 uh in a half and obviously they had gone over but they decided that uh they voided a bunch of a bunch of degenerate guys bets because of uh because of that so yeah you're you're uh you're betting Northwestern State and Southern Alabama you got real problems you got real problems Jeremy those are your people although the board does look quite boring this week oh my goodness I'll tell you it's not a great slate well but we were talking about some of these like at the Arizona Kansas State game tonight uh that's two top 20 teams yeah but it doesn't count as a as a conference game so that takes a little bit of that that bite away from it by the way way that other voice you're hearing that's still that's still going to be a good game yeah sorry guys I'm late uh Riley Nelson thanks for showing up thanks R did you ever play any games here at uh Tim view yeah in fact I was thinking the last time I was on this field guys it's sly's not going to like this because it's going to remind him how old he is cuz we're the same age 2003 I was a sophomore came down we W in a goodness I I wasn't starting I at that time I was just uh I was the punt returner kick returner I was on special teams I was a gunner on the punt team I was a sophomore down here I did have a tackle uh I I had like two Fair catches in like I think like an eight yard return or whatever but no right here in this very end zone we're on the southwest corner of The End Zone in overtime you had a tackle no not not in overtime no that was how we scored the winning touchdown I just remember it was a back it was a back cubby that you tackled Brit cubby maybe was born then I don't even know if he was born then this was 2003 oh he was definitely playing he was 20 for sure he was 20 no he was he was scoring touchdowns in his scout team St older brother St was the quarterback so that was so that year we played him twice we won overtime here and then we beat him in the semi-finals and in R we beat him twice that was Steven cvy Luke Ashworth Matt Reynolds Harvey yunga like bunch of good players talk we were just talking we beat them twice beat him in overtime here and then we beat him again I I'll tell another St team another story well they were all Juniors that's the problem so all Juniors so we do a home and home next week we're repl or next year we're replacing 17 seniors that was very senior late team up at Logan High 17 of us second game of the year so most of us in our second starts or whatever they beat us 49 to7 okay yeah yeah pretty good team so did they they were nice not to run up the score did they win the did they win the yeah 87 to running no voided no voided bets in that game uh well Riley Nelson of course joins us Stevenson Sylvester across the table from me and then JJ and I do our football Fridays of course uh Jeremy what did you say you told me to do something I didn't even hear what you said uh Riley you're you're too loud you're just like I'm excited to be here I got to fit three hours of energy into 90 minutes I love it uh so here's the deal as we start to look at games like uh that we see this weekend I did want to bring back the um some of the conversations that we had a little bit earlier because I have some sound to play from colani sataki talking about the running backs for BYU being uh obviously your first and second string running backs are out from a quarterback perspective does that get you is that a deflating thing I guess it would be different if you had Harvey younga in the back field or Jamal Williams versus uh you know a couple of guys like LJ Martin and and hinley roati who you still hadn't seen one I didn't think you even saw an LJ Martin who was 100% yet because he uh you know he was kind of dinged up during during camp but what does that do for you when you are in the Huddle and I know next man up mentality is what we say but what but what does it do for you as a quarterback Riley when you're sitting there and you've got a third and four string running back who you're going to be working with this week uh it it was tougher last week cuz they both got dinged up in the first half of last week and you weren't sure if you had them so it's tougher when they get thrown in mid game once you get a whole week of practice there and you can kind of put your arm around them and like yeah and you can like hey these protections against these blitzes and you can sit there and you can watch the film with hopefully all that stuff's going on right it's it's less nerve-wracking especially when you got a dude in Eno naah who like he's new to BYU and he ended up third on the depth chart but I've been watching that dude for Utah State for the last two years and like can he can run the Rock and he's a willing uh pass blocker and and Miles Davis is another guy I feel like Miles Davis is like approaching like cam Rising territory how long has that dude been he's a veteran for sure he actually had a really good game in 2022 against Wyoming it helped him get to a win so right so he's a guy who who's played that team before so not it's not as uh it's not as much and then the and then the third thing is like I talk about like program DNA a lot the reality is the program DNA and I know we just heard a sound from Rodrick talking about how tough Wyoming's defense is but just on program DNA your your lineman and tight ends should be able to move Wyoming's defensive front seven that no matter who's tote in the rock you should be able to have at least you know moderate success yeah um here's what here's what Kanani satake said Jeremy we're going to listen to those uh that first one about uh about the running backs because he feels pretty confident I think it's along the same lines because they've seen these guys running all spring and and and fall and uh I think that they were because LJ Martin saw limited action they got to see more of these guys in the in the fall and they here's what he says about the the dudes who are in that running back room we feel good about the group Eno nahina did a great job coming in so did ma Davis so M brings a lot of experience Eno has played a lot of games for us uh on special teams and so those guys will do great a great for a great job for us with a running back group and feel like we talked about the depth it's going to be testing the running back room you know hopefully we get better news with the recovery from both those from both the backs but what to kind of just wait and see what today says but if I were if I were telling you guys honestly it's like it looks doubtful so we just have to move on and then just plan according to whatever's there the fortunate part is that we have um guys that are that are experienced especially Miles Davis am I a year off played oh Eno no he played 10 games for the aies as a freshman in 2019 oh he's been around for forever cuz he said played a lot of games special teams for us wow that's crazy how much uh wow the mission legs is that what happened to he go on a mission come back to 2019 that's where because I'm like where I'm missing some time here but that makes sense of it yeah but Co and all the other everything gets weird everybody now has got uh BYU guys on their teams no honestly like it's funny how teams now are like you know they talk about stuff and they're like and he's 25 what's the guy I know because how old's cam Cam's gonna be 27 in the spring right is he that old yeah oh sorry uh H I thought he was 24 25 no yeah okay yeah it's he's getting up there so that's why his hands are bleeding you guys ever been around like an old lady like their their skin just gets so brittle it can get sliced so easy and it bleeds for forever a couple old ladies into the water cooler too quar of the day uh all right so obviously colani and his guys have to figure it out both of you we talked to we talked about these games at at Wyoming that sly's played he does not have memories uh of laremy how about how about you Riley I got a fourth quarter I played there twice my freshman in Utah State it was while I was still it was it was actually my first college game of ever was Utah State at Wyoming and we got we got we weren't very good that year I didn't play a snap they were still trying to register me but when I got my second chance backing up Max Hall I almost rushed for a 100 they just just run quarterback draw Wyoming now this was in 2009 but we heard Rodrick they're running the same defense I'm joking they're not running the same defense in 2009 no but I had seven carries 91 yards and two TDS in in only a fourth quarter of of Duty I was at that game yeah so we that's the last time 52 to nothing the last time by it was 52 52 to nothing 2009 yeah yeah no JJ was throwing old ladies into the water cooler too that that's how I roll salsbery steak Yeah cuz Sly was telling us a story about how I was like look the accommodations weren't great they knew it they that's kind of what they was it them or Colorado State cuz you played you played your whole career Mount West yeah was it them or Colorado state that didn't have dividers like the toilets were just in the wall Colorado state was the worst lock room I've ever I think that was Colorado State but Wyoming had something like maybe a door was missing that's like the old M Municipal stadium in Cleveland where they were just like yep you're all going to have to stare at each other while you go to the bathroom no no Wyoming was more it was just old it felt like hooers yeah like wood like wood lockers I think smells like it Wyoming was just it smelled too you could smell like the N it was under the under the stadium it was under the stadium yeah you came out through a portal like you know bleacher steps like you know looking up like you kissing a girl under the bleachers that's what our locker room felt like just brick and old wooded seats that had splinters in it it was just terrible yeah so it does people talk about like lar me get in Ruckus you know I don't have those memories either get blown out like we did in 2006 or uh blow them out like you do in 2009 they were plenty Pleasant 0809 as well but I still just hate that place yeah so windy yeah it is so it doesn't even matter what what time's kick I sorry I should know but I oh so it's a night game yeah that's nice no ours was a day game and yeah glaring too so it was wind and glare just unpleasant yes wow the turf was really glary I think that's that's a real term glary uh I KN I went to school with a guy named glary he was a great guy GL we're going to take a break we'll come back we've got more to go let's chat a little bit about what the future of Utah state does look like now that the Pack 12 has uh raided the hen house we're going to talk a little bit about what that future looks like and what uh Utah State's options are going to be going forward in the Mountain West or whatever the version of college football is going to be that we're seeing out of this uh out of Logan in the next 10 years we'll talk about it next stay right here 975 B KL Sports Zone it's a Friday and we're talking football nonstop onstop all football all the time this is another edition of football Friday with JJ and Alex presented by G2G bars on 975 the KSL Sports Zone welcome back to your football Fridays JJ and Alex 975 KSL Sports Zone we're at tin viw high school I just looked over to my right here fellas and I'm uh Riley Nelson by the way in front of me uh former Utah State BYU quarterback Stevenson Sylvester former Utah linebacker NFL linebacker the grill is right here do you think they're going to fire that up before the end of the night that's what's unfortunate is is we're right next to this Grill and they're going to start cooking burgers or whatever I'm going to be in a bad way yeah why is your eyes lit up right now I know I'm just telling you you're just glad I'm almost glad nobody showed up with some fixing s well listen with Salt Lake fat laws you can fit it into the plan no I know it it would it can be part of the plan have to just live a life of it's not that it's not that it's it's smelling it the entire rest of the show if they fired up the grill right now I'd be like that's a great Point guys that's a really great Point all right the Utah State News or I say Utah State News it affects Utah State but the Pack 12 has moved to uh a pack six after being a pack two yesterday the moves on the risk board got really weird this week and now we kind of see guys like why the Pack 12 and the Mountain West I think it was a couple of weeks ago got real cold on one another they got it was basically like we're not moving forward talking anymore with these guys this is a one-year agreement that we're going to have uh with with the uh the sched state Washington State and after that uh we bid them ad do because we are not doing you knew that something was going on and this was the thing that was going on they invite Fresno State Colorado state boisey state San Diego State San Diego State all new members now of the pack six they're going to have to add two more as well I don't know where they're going to come from but if they want to be a legitimate FBS conference uh by 2026 they have to add two more teams you got to have that eight team minimum which means also the Mountain West has to figure their stuff out too because if they uh as they go forward they've got to add two more because they're at six it's a weird I mean alignment has brought us a lot of weird news this one hits close to home because Utah State Riley is not in any of the conversations people are having about where they're going to end end up in one of these bigger conferences or be invited to the Pack 12 or whatever it might be it comes down to Stadium size they play good ball up at Utah State course they do it comes down to youth Stadium size and uh media market and you know there there's a lot of faithful agies out there but you know Utah State's enrollment has has kind it's it's grown significantly in recent years but it's been down for a long time so you don't have or meaning historically for decades it it wasn't a huge enrollment school so you're not pumping out right you don't have that compounding effect of pumping out tons and tons of um of um excuse me alumni so the alumni base isn't as big and they also uh are in a place where they got to draw a lot and as as sad as this you know sounds it is the reality for agies that they they got a draw from the majority of the population of the state is split between Utah and B they grow up meaning as kids they grow up as those fans they go up to Utah State to get their education but not all of them convert to being lifelong agies they go back to being fans of Utah or Utah State and they don't contribute back to lumni Bas meaning this is all coming back to like as a media opportunity as from a fundraising opportunity and then like a stadium type opportunity the the juice just isn't there but they play good ball their basketball team is you know the spectrum is a great experience and like it's big enough and all of that but the reality is basketball is is always nice add-on at least as far as it and it always has been as it relates to these conference realignment issues and things like that so A's got to find out you know what they got to find partners and see what's going to happen there and I don't know I mean the NSA was done a done a lot up there in a very short time as athletic director but they brought him over brought her over from the Big 10 conference and her administrative role over there supposedly because she's got connections and she has pull at a national level and uh she's going to earn her money right now she like she's going to earn her salary now positioning Utah State for success in and whatever the next shooter drop may be if she wanted this she got it this is she's entering this situation at the most challenging and troubling time for any athletic director in Utah State history because what happens next is going to be massive for that program and she's going to have to navigate them through that and her Legacy will be defined and her future employment opportunities will be like let's be real the the whether or not the reason why like she she hopped around as a associate ad at a bunch of different big 10 schools and the reason why she went to the work for the conference is because she couldn't actually get the head job at any of those and so she went to the conference to kind of settle look for a next opportunity Utah state has been a tremendous leaping pad or launching pad for a lot of folks to Major like when I was there it was it was spetman and spetman goes from Utah state to Florida State like the ad job at Florida State Barnes under the Gary Anderson time orchestrated this whole thing we go to Oregon State right anyway so to your point about getting what she wants like depending on how she handles this she very well may have her pick of big 10 jobs right the next openings her name's going to be top of that list if they can say hey look what she did Utah state was left in the Lurch but now she got him in a viable situation going forward well we were you know this is the part that sucks is we're talking with uh we were speaking with uh Brett McMurphy yesterday from the Action Network and he broke a lot of this and and and and kind of rolled out what a lot of these teams were and and he had this same conversation with a lot of folks at some high levels of and it was well what does this look like and he's like uh you know what maybe you bring over the Montana schools maybe bring over the dtas and you're like that's where we're at now those are all great programs football programs how's there athletic no idea I mean obviously these are these are communities that are all in but where else is the Mountain West Conference going to turn for additions to strengthen let ask and I and I know I mean the athletic Coast conference is the biggest joke having you know West Coast Pacific Coast teams in the athletic in the Atlantic Coast Conference but does the Mountain West have more to offer Than The Sun Belt and go pick off a UTSA and a Texas State those are names that are also come up you go down there right those are Nam Texas makes sense the most sense if you do move into te I mean that's what you want to do uh everybody in Las cruus is like pick us pick us yeah and I know the people go well you got San Jose State still that's a California school you got a California Market one of the Reas why one of the beliefs why boisee State San Diego State these four teams did this is because they were tired of being drugged down by what they call the drgs of the Mountain West it's not ustah State's fault but the hawaiis and the wyomings and the San Jose States new mexic new that haven't been good in football never they feel like that's been holding them back and that's the reason why they can't get what they want they they that's part of the reason the motivation they left and so you take those teams out and you have the Mountain West Utah state would be you could argue the one of the best athletic programs in the conference but what is that conference and what impact does that have and how much money can they get in their next TV contract with all those teams leaving H how valuable as the Mountain West Conference without that boisey State football uh you know and you look at San Diego State as well San Diego State yeah who let's not forget two years ago was in the final four or even national championship game a huge loss I mean they do still have New Mexico UNLV Utah state which were all three in the NCA tournament recently and Nevada but is that enough to keep the momentum going in a football sense you're 100% right so where where does the Pack 12 though so where does the Pack 12 go for their more I I'm here and try and lure Cal Stanford back oh won't happen can't get out of the grand of Rights I think they look at going big like Memphis like go get some a teams UNLV Air Force are mentioned as the Mountain West teams they could be interested in they had the same Texas idea go get UTSA in Texas state it I mean it's it's wide open I think and it's going to be interesting and fascinating to see where they go for those two teams and I don't think they'll be done but how's I don't think they're not going to sit at eight teams how's it the New Mexico nine games just for an eight game conference schedule we were looking at this and and like why does New Mexico get brought up before Utah state does why is that question Metropolis like but Alex it's 600,000 people comp as opposed to basically Cash Valley which is 150 to 160 the question is go do the conferences View Utah state in the Salt Lake City Utah Market or in Logan they view it in Logan because they can see like a agies are playing on SP like honestly wasat front Aggies need to stand up because they know that that viewership is very much concentrated north of OG Riley I'll tell you what though we're at those Mountain West Conference meetings Utah media is at all those things yeah Y and a lot of those other schools don't have media that show up yeah that's true you think Denver Denver doesn't have people show up for Colorado and that's one example I'm not saying that tells you that there's market value here for Utah State my point is this is a very valuable sports market right now and technically the Aggies are a part of it and anybody that looks at this and says well you know how much should we value Utah State well we were having the same conversation about BYU in Utah 14 years ago when the first round of realignment came up what has happened since this Market has blown up you know what's so unique about this like New Mexico New New Mexico's got New Mexico New Mexico State Arizona's got Arizona Arizona State like if you look at Colorado has I guess they have Colorado they have a third they've got Air Force but that's a service yeah it's a little different because it's a service Academy the reality is all of our like similarly aligned demographic um States they don't have the third they don't have the Third Wheel right like Arizona support even Washington and Oregon right they support too ex yeah great Point Washington or and then idah gag idah they don't have football and Idaho only supports one so like Utah is like about the same a little bit bigger than Idaho but has tripled the amount of teams that they gota um try and support it's it's tough spot it's a it's a wild thing to be a part of now to watch because we've watched this happen with big teams and big schools that are like you GNA can we come and these big conferences are like no Oregon and Washington just did they're taking half they're taking half the revenue they did the same thing Stanford and Cal are like we will just please take us we won't take a dime a team that was in the national championship last year took half the money to get into the Big 10 yeah all right let's take crazy we we'll come back we've got audio to hear we've got some uh sound to hear players and coaches at Utah uh talking about Isaac Wilson uh appropriate because you know I think you're going to see a guy who got a lot more reps this week you're going to see somebody who now people are going to say what are you going to do with those uh with this significant amount of reps that you
