"Steelers' offense looks better under Wilson's lead" - Bucky Brooks on Tomlin picks Russ over Fields

and we did get to see some of those new faces you just heard about right there for Mike Tomlin in this preseason finale in Detroit Steelers lions and it's Russell wison getting the start here and Russ LED an efficient operation on drive one including this 32 yard connection wrong to George pickings yeah get him involved he's he can be special that was a nice pitch and catch there turned it over to the Run game after that no Naji Harris no Jaylen Warren it's CG he's h High stepping in the end zone how about that 84 tail B getting busy you better believe it making moves in the secondary to get into the end zone so Russ LED that touchdown drive and he took a seat on the bench and gave it up to Justin Fields had a nice throw here to Michael BR rip it rip it right here that's a good throw yeah see it down inside the five Steelers would put that in the end zone as well that was nice just a threat of Justin phield was being able to toilet create a little theme for the running back to walk wonder how that factors into this quarterback situation and decision for Mike Tomlin here though Zack Frasier a little before Fields was ready on the snap and that was near disaster not Zack Fraser the center though yeah uh there an error there but he's going to be a good player they they drafted the guy uh and I think he's going to be the starter a long time indeed there you go so 14 nothing at this point Fields goes down here Lions get the win 247 17 Mike Tomlin got a decision to make on his QBs we'll make a decision at the end of our work week this upcoming week uh we got three days of Steelers versus Steelers work and why not do it then it kind of you know minimizes the steers versus Steelers work when we start making decisions prior uh to the completion of that we've got ample time to prepare for Atlanta and make whatever decisions or announcements regarding divisional labor or pecking orders and so forth and so we'll do it at the end of the work week all right so let's take a look here Russell Wilson Justin fields and in terms of sample size Fields getting a little bit more action obviously Russell was still kind of dealing with the calf early on in the preseason Fields leading two scoring drives and look it's pretty even uh did see a little bit more running the football from the quarterback spot when Justin Fields was there as as you might expect Bucky what's your choice what are you what are you looking for what are you deciding on when Mike Tomlin puts this into context Mike Tomlin has to make a decision on whether he wants to manage or a playmaker at quarterback and naturally when you're a defensive guy you lean more towards the managerial type and Russell Wilson and the reason is you don't want to lose games by turning the ball over having egregious penalties not understanding how to line everybody up there's comfort in having Russell Wilson take the Reigns because he's done that he's done it for a long time he's won a Super Bowl in this role and even though he's not vintage Russell Wilson he's good enough to lead a team with a good running game and a strong defense to higher Heights he gets the ball early knowing that you can always give it to Justin Fields late if you're not getting what you need on offense yeah and let's look at the schedule here for the Pittsburgh Steelers they're going to open in Atlanta with the Falcons and then you get another road game against the Broncos before coming home to host the Chargers that first quarter then see three out of four on the road to start here Baldi how much do you think the schedule and and what they're looking at here early on might tell us about maybe how short the is for either one of these quar well a couple things one I mean we heard M Tom just say Atlanta I don't think they're looking any further than the Atlanta Falcons that's their opener in Atlanta but what they don't want to do Rett is what they did last year you go to picket to trabis to Mason Rudolph and you're juggling these quarterbacks looking for a spark and that's not what you want you want to that's why I think Mike is taking an extra week here to like make sure he gets this thing right make sure is if it's Russell is he fully healthy can he play the way we have seen Russell play at times before or do they need what Bucky just said just a true playmaker back there and let's live with whatever mistakes that might come with that yeah and uh you know they're going to get a couple more days of work sounds like three more work days as M Tomlin said Steelers versus Steelers so we'll see what uh ultimately that decision is at the conclusion of this week perhaps some decisions to be made here for the 49ers and for Brandon auk as their contract stalemate continues he was with the team in their preseason finale on Friday in Las Vegas and watching watching Brock cie find Debo Samuel in a new number number one I mean wide receiver w at this point certainly with Brandon auk not there absolutely he can make plays and then George KD that throw was unbelievable I mean to throw that ball into the middle like that and George just climb the uh the ladder to go get it that that's an amazing throw all right so let's give you a third and six here as Brock's trying to get them into the end instead there some good defense there there some good defense yeah come right over the top on Debo right there ball out Z ball drill yeah tipped and picked Brock adbo talking about it on the sideline they get that thing figured out that game ends in a tie 24 24 exciting game brand the iuk though not the only absence notable absence in 49ers camp in preseason Trent Williams obviously not there as well Christian mcaffry still coming back from the injury Baldi but how did the auk and Williams contract situations impact what we're going to see from San Francisco week one well I mean if you just look at what happened last year with Nick Bosa they signed Nick Bosa days before their opener against the Steelers a year ago I think these things have time to get done uh you know Nick Bosa came in the lineup without any off season got three sacks against the Steelers I believe you could take Trent Williams I don't know if he's in Long View Texas right now where he's at I believe that Trent Williams stays in shape you could put him in week one against the Jets in that pass rush and he'd be just fine but I think they got to get that deal done he's got a relationship with Kyle going back to his days with the Washington commanders um Kyle knows they're a much better team with Trent in there if they can get iuk done look at some point you can't pay every single star on your team and maybe this is where it comes to an end but I think they're doing everything they can to get this deal done auk and Trent if I'm a Nish fan I'm worried I'm worried because I'm worried about the lack of focus no one is around everyone is focused on their own individual agendas we're not coming together as a team we're here in training camp Brandon auk's not here Trent Williams crying for money we just got CMC done I just don't like it going in I feel like the Super Bowl hangover is still hovering over the 49ers right now and then there's that the Ricky peol injury you know so kind of thought that might be some insurance for him if the iuk thing lingers or if he ends up leaving but now you know piol dealing with the shoulder situ obviously tail in the last year that Vibes were not immaculate uh there was some talk about you know maybe there was some frustration there uh kind of all all around in Philadelphia right but Baldi do you feel like this team now Herz serani can get back to the success of 2022 and put to bed the struggles of late season 20123 yeah I do I mean they didn't have answers to a lot of things that teams were doing to them at the end of the season last year so you bring in Kell Moore and Doug newme and the offensive side I think the coaching is better the protections will be a little clear their answers to pressures and blitzes will be better and then the talent around it is better you can hand it off to saquan right now throw it to Squan along with AJ Devonte and then you trade for Jan doson behind a quality offensive line I mean there's no reason why Jaylen can't get back to playing at a level that we saw in 2022 when they went to a Super Bowl they've gotten off to good starts each of the last two seasons and so I feel like they've got everything they have that they need for Jaylen Herz to be successful in this offense to be good offense should be remarkable and I'm I mean I'm expecting a team that can light up scoreboards Kell Moore takes over and it reminds me a lot of when the Cowboys had Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott in the prime bringing saquon Barkley over gives them a different dimension to this offense we can talk about Devonte Smith and AJ Brown and Dallas Gard but being able to run the football with saquan changes the equation it should make life easier for Jaylen Herz look for jayen Herz to reemerge as that guy that was pushing for MVP status a couple years ago yeah but no question that Dak Prescott was the most prolific passer and best quarterback in this division the NFC East a year ago will we be saying the same all right Dak Prescott entering the last year of his contract barring of course an extension and has not had the benefit of having CD lamb around and all here Bucky Brooks so what's our expectation of what Dak can do in this offense this year I think Dak can do what he's done under Mike McCarthy has play his best football of his career he'll continue to do that a season where he led the league in interceptions and him and Mike McCarthy they watched all of them and then they w got reduced big time the turnovers got reduced this year they've got a shuffle the deck up front you know Tyron Smith and Tyler bitis two longtime starters are gone they've replaced him by rookies uh if they've drafted well they should be good up front they look like two really good prospects in gon and BB and if they play well up front uh look I mean they're much better obviously when CD is in the lineup but Dak still has a chance to play really good football because I think he'll be protected and I think Mike McCarthy is's just a very good play caller yeah certainly and look this situation that the Cowboys are in right now with CD lamb and the contract hold out not one that is unfamiliar to Jerry Jones I remember this EMT Smith holding out the first two games of that 93 season Cowboys went 0 and2 despite Troy Aman saying that they could win without EMT all right that that didn't age well that quote by Troy well takes exposed uh and then of course they would go on to win Super Bowl 28 after reported and they worked it all out guys like Charles Haley week three yeah there okay and more recently the Cowboys were kind of in this situation with Ezekiel Elliott remember he didn't report till September 4th uh when when he had the contract dispute as well so um Bucky with CD lamb not there right now um Can this offense as you were saying you expect Dak Prescott to play high level football but if CD lamb doesn't show up for another week are we still there well still expect him to play well because he's going to run the offense as it operates it's different though because
