Donald Trump wants Congressional Republicans to play chicken Congress has to pass some sort of funding bill by the end of the month to avoid a government shutdown but on Tuesday afternoon Trump posted on Truth social if Republicans in the House and Senate don't get absolute assurances on Election security they should in no way shape or form go forward with a continuing resolution on the budget A continuing resolution or CR is a stop Gap measure that funds the government while negotiations continue over the full annual budget Republican house Speaker Mike Johnson has proposed a CR tied to the Safeguard American voter eligibility or save act which would require voters in federal elections to show proof of citizenship but according to the hill that package is unlikely to get through the Democratic controlled Senate and white house and Congressional Republicans heading into an election may not be as willing as Trump to risk a shutdown NBC News quotes GOP Senator Tom Tillis as saying shutdowns always backfire on Republicans it's not clear how speaker Johnson can avoid such an outcome without alienating Trump and his supporters but for now he's claiming not to be worried I'm not going to engage in conjecture and and uh you know try to game out all the outcomes I think this is something that we should do and that's what we're doing
