hello everyone I know that uh maybe the headline caught your attention and I want to tell you with the new documentary out on Greg Maddox there's one message that I want to give everyone right now it's been my feeling for a long time and with all the hype over the documentary I want to reiterate it Greg madx was one of the best regular season picturers the major leagues has ever seen however when it came to the playoffs he was middling he experienced a lot of playoffs because he played on all those good Atlanta Braves teams but he didn't really do the job and here's what I mean by that I'm going to explain I'm going to use a lot of Statistics some people like stats some people don't it's how I sort of compare apples to apples so let's take Greg mx's stats we're looking in this chart right here Greg manx 355 wins this is regular season 227 losses had a win percentage of 610 uh career 3.16 ra a whip of 1.43 he started 740 games his wins to game started was 479 479 to be specific so pretty good that number that wins compared to game started is most often going to be um less than 500 because pitchers you know they'll they might start what is it uh you know 30 40 games whatever it might be 20 games and they out of 20 games they start let's say one season they might be seven and four so they didn't even you know they only have 11 finishes seven of which were wins and they pitched 20 games so that win to game started is often times going to be less than 500 but as you can see here Greg Maddox during the regular season had a wins the game started ratio of 479 which is great anything within 20 30 40 50 60 points even of 500 is really good you if you jump down three rows though you see Randy Johnson had 33 wins 166 losses a win percentage of 646 um Which is higher than Greg Maddox he had a higher ER at 3.29 he had a higher whip um but he started many many 137 less games his wins the game started was actually over 500 because he won 303 games he had 303 wins and he started 63 games now maybe I think he had 15 games that he didn't start Maybe maybe in one or two of those games he got a win but it still doesn't matter he's over 500 wins at game started so Randy Johnson you're going to tell me is a different kind of pitcher than Greg Maddox I get it he was a power pitcher he was a left-hander he was 6'10 Greg Maddox was not 6'10 he was a right-hander he painted the outside corners okay Greg Maddox relied heavily on regular season hitters to come up with these stats and I'm going to explain why in a second but let's take Greg maddox's other sort of peers and the best peers I can find are really the people who he played with because they were in almost as many championships playoffs whatever you want to call it first we have John Smoltz who spent a great deal of the LA latter part of his career in the Bull Pack okay he had 213 wins 155 losses but he had what4 saves something like that he had a win percentage of 579 which is awesome he had an RA of 3.33 great um a whip 1.76 just just above just a little bit worse than Randy Johnson's he started only 482 games and had a win percentage um to game started of 442 then we have Tom glavin the third person who has a 300 game winner here he he had 305 wins 203 losses hit a win percentage of 600 the highest ra 3.54 the highest whip 1314 uh game started 682 so he was the second highest and a win percentage of 447 now this is where I'm talking about why Greg Maddox I feel was overrated during the regular season he wasn't overrated during the regular season Greg ma Maddox was a phenomenal A++ pitcher okay you don't win 355 games during the regular season unless you're a phenomenal pitcher his winning percentage at 479 which was so much higher than smtz I did the math and if John Smoltz started 740 games with his same winning to game started percentage he would have had about 25 to 30 less wins than Greg Maddox so yes Greg Maddox as a reg reg season pitcher was lights out he was phenomenal he was not he was not a hard thrower he could throw hard but he painted the corners inside outside up down he painted that you know um Randy Johnson was different John Smoltz was a little bit more of a power pitcher glavin probably was more in line with Maddox as far as painting the corners he wasn't necessarily known as a power Lefty the way Randy Johnson was but let's look at what I consider and what people who always debate the goat especially in basketball consider the playoffs one of the reasons one of the arguments I always hear about why Michael Jordan is the goat in basketball is because he was 6-0 in final championships finals championships he was six and0 LeBron not LeBron's lost what four or five championships he's won four um and that's one of the arguments that I hear against LeBron repeatedly so let's go into the playoffs and let's try to keep Greg MDX regular season up here Greg madx in the playoffs in his career okay was 11 and 14 with a 440 uh winning percentage of of those 25 games he had a higher ra of 3.27 his whip was higher than the regular season at 1.24 to so let's down and and break down his different playoff series in the nlds he was 5 and3 the NLCS 4-8 and the World Series 2 and3 now let me just sort of give you my armchair philosophy on these numbers since Greg Maddox was such a good regular season pitcher in the nlds you have teams that you know aren't going to make the NLCS so you'll see teams you know across the board their hitters are not maybe from top to bottom as Elite as some of the other teams or one team might have you know let's say Atlanta had six or seven really good hitters and the team they're facing had maybe three to four really good hitters so madx carried over his his winning in the nlds if you look his regular season winning percentage is 610 in the nlds it's 625 so not too far away okay now his ER was up and his whip was up um which is kind of surprising that that the whip would be up so much but um and then in the NLCS you get the best from your leap so his numbers went dramatically down 4 and8 A 333 winning percentage his ra went up even more at 367 and his whip held around what it did in the nlds now what's interesting here what's interesting to me is in World Series he did win two of the five competitions um games that he was in but he had a 400 winning percentage his ER was lower and his whip was much lower so what this tells me is the national League that he was always in was highly competitive against against the American League he was facing better hitters he was facing a better team he was maybe more locked in he you know it was that there is no tomorrow kind of philosophy or we got to get the win it's only seven games these are really important okay so you look at that and you say Okay 11-4 3.27 ER pretty good right pretty good not bad right well if you look at his Pier his colleague his teammate John Smoltz was 15 and4 his winning percentage was 789 in the playoffs his ra dropped almost 70 to 2.67 his whip went down to 1.144 in the nlbs he mopped the floor with people he was 7 and0 his Ra was 2.59 his rip was down to 941 he turned it on he was facing that same sort of similar hitting that you would see through the regular season maybe maybe 10 to 20% 30% a little bit better and he wiped the floor with that 7 and0 with a 2.59 erra now you might say that wins and losses really depends on how many uh how many runs your team scores and I understand that if your team is just shut out by the other pitcher you might lose that game but here's the fact here's the fact of the playoffs you're competing against that pitcher that other starting pitcher you're competing against them every single time out and John Smoltz was there in the nlds now in the NLCS which is you know you go from maybe 20 to 30% better during the regular season to 40 to 60% better during the regular season he was 6-2 his win percentage was 750 he had a 2.83 ER and a 1.26 whip now in the World Series he was 2 and two but that's 500 he's still at a 2.47 ER and a 1.27 five whip now if we look at Greg manx and Tom glavin the nlds Greg madx cleans or not Greg MX John Smoltz cleans Greg Maddox his clock with that he was 7 and0 compared to 5 and three in the NLCS Smoltz was 6-2 madx was 4 and8 with a 3.67 ra and and Smoltz had a 2.83 ra and even had a less whip so in the first two rounds career-wise in the playoffs John Smoltz was a a superior pitcher by far by far it's not even close he was 13-2 in the first rounds Maddox was 9 and 11 in the first two rounds completely different now in the World Series they're pretty close you know manx is two and three Smoltz is 2 and two Smoltz had a 2.47 ER manx had a 2.09 and manx had a much better whip at 905 compared to 1. 1275 with Smoltz so part of this is It's a small sample size number one but number two I would dare I say that it's maybe a wash or you kind of maybe give that advantage to Smoltz but combined they were four and five in World Series I wouldn't say that that's really a great record as teammates so now let's look at glavin in the postseason and compare him to to Maddox glavin was 4-3 Maddox was 5 and3 glavin had a 571 winning percentage Maddox had a 625 but glavin had a much higher ra here 4.61 so it's it's clearly Maddox was the better pitcher in the playoffs for the first round now in the second round I got to tell you at 6 and 10 you know he's 4-8 it is 375 win percentage manx was 333 now glavin had a much lower ra at 3.22 compared to madx at 366 7 manx had a 1302 Whip and glavin had a 1394 whip so I almost I almost want to say that since 6 and 10 4-8 glavin had a better winning percentage he had a lower erra I almost get the NLCS glavin over Maddox so right now Smoltz beat him in the nlds NLCS the World Series I I I'm kind of saying okay maybe it's a Tai maybe it's Maddox so he has one with glavin who wasn't quite known as the pitcher that Maddox was definitely I'm saying they're splitting the nlds and NLCS and in the World Series glavin was four and three so he actually had a winning percentage he was he had an RA of 2.16 which is pretty close to what Maddox had at a 2.09 and he had a whip of 909 compared to 9005 so I really have to give the advantage here because he had a winning record in the World Series to glavin so right now glavin is two- one and Smoltz is 2 and one against Maddox now let's look at Johnson Johnson overall in the playoffs and in the N LDS he just was horrendous um he was 79 overall in the playoffs so not as many playoff games he had a 438 winning percentage and a 3.50 U ER with a 1.14 whip his whip was lower than his regular season but as you can see his winning percentage was way down his Ra was way up and what really hurts his playoff record was his 2 and8 in the nlds ALDS 2-8 h a 200 winning percentage and a 4.86 erra with a whip of 1.37 but if we go up here to madx in the nlds who was 5 and three he had a 1.35 whip so the whips weren't that off really but I'll I'll definitely give the nlds ALDS to Greg Maddox against Randy Johnson now again I've said this earlier and by now you've at least you're going to hear it a second time I know that Randy Johnson was not the same pitcher as Greg Maddox I'm looking at this as contemporaries I could have taken stats from Clemens but the complaints would have been allegedly he was on the juice so you can't compare apples to apples now Johnson was a different kind of pitcher he was but he was a pitcher in the major leagues and if we're looking at pitcher in the major leagues versus pitcher in the major leagues we can compare that we're looking at Power pitcher versus you know a painter uh maybe not so much different kinds of pitchers yes but pitchers in the major leagues so in the nlds ALDS we give the nod to Greg MAV now everything starts to change once we get to the Championship Series games okay the championship series games Maddox was a an abysmal 4-8 Johnson was two- one not a huge sample size I mean three games does not this is probably you know from 2001 mostly that he got those two wins or whatever the case might be but you look at his ER 1.74 and his whip is off the charts at 86 three I have to give the championship series to Randy Johnson the World Series it it's not even close in my estimation madx was two and three Randy Johnson was 3 and0 with a 1.04 erra and a692 whip off the charts Randy Johnson might be considered one of the best World Series pitchers ever outside of maybe bumgardner I mean look at those numbers 3 and0 1.04 and a whip of well under one even under 700 unheard of Greg manx one of the best regular season pitchers in the in the probably the last 50 70 years okay he had longevity he put up a ton of wins his his winning percentage at 479 was fantastic for for for wins versus games started but in my estimation he's a little overrated because when it came time for the playoffs he wasn't the best Atlanta Braves pitcher he might not have even been the second best Atlanta Braves pitcher that's why in my mind he's overrated because when it came to crunch time he wasn't delivering anyway thank you all for watching and until next time have a great time and don't forget to subscribe
