get into that final four people are going to be like that's where the real teams are I can see that that's well said I think finally Penn State will be the bride instead of the bridesmaid they're always attending Ohio State's wedding and attending Michigan's wedding as they watch Michigan and Ohio State in the college football playoffs and in the Big 10 championship game but finally I believe Penn State will get to attend their own as they will make it into the playoffs so I think for Penn State it will do a lot for the ego of the program and a lot for the confidence on campus but how in the world are the players going to adjust to all of the new faces in that building real quickly man Oregon's going to be good Ohio State's going to be good see what about Michigan where Penn State finishing the Big 10 this year I think third thirdd fourth oo behind Michigan we'll see what happens all right one ranked team already already in action tonight 24th ranked NC State and a tuneup against Western Carolina before let's go to you you know we going to call audible got AUD you know what that's the new rule you can get uh in your ear up to 15 seconds on the play clock here we go let's go to UCF there New Hampshire UCF second quarter up six nothings and KJ Jefferson wait a minute that's colle football isn't he a different uniform KJ jeffon yeah used to be all right now where are we now Howard Ruckers there we go Jan Scroggins outside intercepted by Eric Rogers take down back to the crib let's go back back to the look at him high back to the CRI a defensive Guy high and tight you know coach reservation for six please 62 yards for the pick six rord on top there all right we got Howard we got uh forom Bowling Green still in preseason here seems like Justin peggas on the return breaks free takes it 100 yards for the touchdown somebody get him some oxygen special teams and bow and green rolling right now 27 to nothing in the second hey PJ Fleck has brought a lot of life to this Minnesota program during his tenure and with 16 returning steds from 2023 the Gophers have their sights set on a strong season the charismatic coach Fleck recently caught up with our very own charismatics himself Brady [Music] [Applause] Quinn I love it Aiden great job Jack great job you got to be proud of what you've done in Minnesota as you look forward into 2024 and really the future is is Minnesota where you thought it would be at this point in your tenure absolutely uh this is what we talked about in year one in my introductory press conference was we are going to create cultural sustainability at Minnesota we have 16 to 17 eligible returning starters back from Minnesota after a six and seven season which people are calling disappointed with another bull win I knew there was going to be highs and lows and E and flows that that just happens but to have all those guys want to come back I think is a credit to our culture and our program that's kind of the you know the player that I am I I take value and and culture in the team so Minnesota end up being that school for me Max brosmer your your quarterback coming from New Hampshire has had a lot of success there what are your expectations for him coming in the season we needed a kid to walk in start Play lead embrace the team know that there's probably not going to be competition that beats you and be mature enough to handle that he did he exceeded All my [Music] expectations seems like every single year you guys got a tough match up week one just talk to me a little bit about the anticipation of going into that match up versus North Carolina oh we're fired up for game one I'm kind of the walking billboard uh of the North Carolina uh Minnesota game on Fox but we're really excited I have a lot of respect for ma Brown when I was in college I wrote Every 127 division one schools that I wanted to coach and Ma Brown was one of four that wrote me back and it's in my office to this day framed and Mac has been a great mentor to me over the years uh he's got a really good football team I'm just glad we don't have to go to Chapel Hill this time they get to come to us all right regardless of the type of season he's had at Minnesota he's one thing he's going to get done he's going to win that balll game win that ball game going to win that and five in his Seven Seasons he's 5 and0 in each of his bowl games coach I I think PJ Fleck is a really really good teacher of the game of life I think he's a master motivator I think uh Minnesota is a hard job and I think he's done a wonderful job there and I think he is Minnesota football yeah he knows how to roll that boat no matter where he goes all right speaking of boat they almost needed a boat earlier they did uh North Carolina once to getting Minnesota now scheduled for 9 Eastern due to weather we'll hear from the guys call the game Jason Benet and Brock hu right after [Music] this you can't St me cuz uh [Music] Tom Brady makes his has been a long wait for North Carolina and Minnesota to play college football since last December and the weight got a little bit longer here at Huntington Bank Stadium because of this cell that pushed through there was lightning in the area substantial lightning look Minnesota yesterday had walked through played the Prince song Purple Rain and it got a little bit too literal around here a little while ago so we are pushed back about an hour as of right now Jason benetti Brock Allison Williams reporting downstairs but a lot of answers coming for both of these coaches PJ Fleck and North Carolina's ma Brown when we do play uh when we get to it yes and we're going to get to it here shortly and there's just so much new I and I know every booth in college football here in week number one's going to say the same thing because there's new faces all over the place but we've got new rules we've got new conferences we've got a new playoff format that's going to just create so much cool stuff at the end of the season and in this one well we got new schemes new defensive coordinators new quarterbacks and there is so much newness and I can't wait I'm always this way with the first one can we just get to it and if I'm that way these players and coaches are about 100x more to get this newness out of the way and go play how much of tendency Breakers will we see from two teams that know each other and themselves very well they played last year they know themselves very well as well kickoff and about it an hour but for now we go to the Joel clat show big noon conversations with Michigan head coach Sheron Moore and then his conversation with Matt rule of Nebraska you're going to be the next head coach in Michigan and he's just like I'm going to put it in my contract that you know if I ever believe or go somewhere that you're the next head coach of Michigan and he told me that like at the beginning of the year and I was just like what most influential people in the sport talking about the sport [Music] globally on this episode of big noon conversations I talk with the new head coach of the Michigan Wolverines Chiron Moore head coach of the Michigan Wolverine Chiron Moore thanks for joining me man how you doing I'm great I'm doing great I would love for you to take us back in into that moment when you know Coach Harbaugh is is going to move on and and get a job with the Chargers and you know we had talked I know that this was always in your aspirations uh but take me into what it was like for you you know and and when did you realize that this was the move that they were going to make well I was in the Dallas or Houston Airport heading to Dallas recruiting recruiting yeah and I would I just talked to Coach probably like 3 hours before that and he's kind of like yeah you know I don't know what's going to happen I think it could happen soon it could happen today it could happen tomorrow could happen next week and I was like okay it's going to happen some point I just got to be ready and um he called you know I saw it I was going through baggage claim or going through the TSA and uh it popped up on my phone Jim Harbaugh to the Chargers I like okay and that second phone text messages calls text messages calls uh our ad or assistant ad calls hey you got to come back right now so I did an interview that next day and got the job on Saturday uh press conference was on the recruit Road recruiting on Monday and and that was it and uh it was just humbling experience um what I thought was unique you know having covered this sport for a long time whether it was a guy like me on the outside pounding the table for Chiron Mo immediately thank you or the fan base right players fan base it was in unison and that's very rare you know normally these types of moves come with different factions of people voicing their opinions and wanting different things that wasn't the case here it was universally Chiron Moore is going to be our head coach at Michigan what did that make you feel like when you felt that kind of ground swell of support felt honored uh felt like all the hard work that I put in that with this team and these players had really come to fruition and I mean it was something that you can't really describe but just very humbled to have you know wolver Nation all the people all the players coaches you and you know some media to say hey like he should be the head coach at Michigan and uh it you know when I first got here seven years ago I just wanted to be the best tight end Coach I could be that's it uh you know at some point wanted to call plays I got a chance to do that with our young guys and you know the opportunity to be the head coach here was really not in my mind and so when that when this did take place it was you know very humbling for me when did it enter your mind um probably it entered my mind when coach harwal told me like you're going to be the next head coach of Michigan when did he tell you that this year he told me that he said I don't know when I don't know what's going to happen no man can say the future tell the future and uh he gave you a heart ball ISM he give me but like that's how he is he's like that all the time and he just said you're going to be the next head coach of Michigan and uh I was just like what and he's just like I'm going to put it in my contract that you know if I I ever believe or go somewhere that you're the next head coach of Michigan and he told me that like at the beginning of the year and I was just like what like I and I I just thought about that and I was just like this man who's a legendary coach who's done it all and we have a chance this year to make a special run is telling me that I'm going to be the next head coach here and like what does that mean that means I got to work my tail off for this man he trusted me in this offense to do everything possible to help him and this team win so uh just worked as hard as I could this year well you can't bring up that game without me bringing up your interview with Jimmy at the end that was an epic authentic and and very um is one of the best interviews that that she's ever [Music] gotten the stage is set there are Clues everywhere what the heck is that you guys are all missing the biggest [Applause] C hey college football fans Joel clatt here over on my podcast the Joel clat show we are bringing you the best college football analysis every week I discuss the best teams the best players and the biggest story lines in college football with new episodes every week the Joel class show is your complete college football Roundup any questions then send them into the Joel class show mailbag follow the Joel class show on the Fox Sports app Apple Spotify or wherever you get your podcast [Music] last year was a um you can use any type of word to describe it wild magical yeah legendary you know all of the things uh let me take you into more of the wild nature you know and and everything that was going on even you had to sit out a game coach had to sit out a few games then all of a sudden what happens at the end of the year coach having to sit uh for a few games so you got a taste of being an acting head coach last season what did you learn from those experiences when you had the Reigns on game day yeah I learned that you're always in the spotlight um there's always somebody watching you but the decisions you make not only impact that side of the ball but the whole team and how important how diligent how detailed you need to be in the preparation of all that um and was very humbled again to just be in that position and do that you know the first game that happened was the Penn State game and it was a environment that's close to unmatched in any in any college football arena especially for an away team it was loud it was volatile it was fun uh invigorating but it was something that our players kind of gravitated towards and they love that they they love being the villain and um it was it was a special special game you can't bring up that game without me bringing up your interview with Jamie at the end to say that this has been a crazy 24 hours for your guys to win on the road in this environment when there were doubts sh what does it mean to you well I thank the Lord than coach harball love you man love you man this for you for this University the president our ad we got the best play best university best alumni in the country love you guys these guys right here these guys right here man these guys did it these guys did it man it's all to him man love you that was an an epic authentic and and very um is one of the best interviews that that she's ever gotten she was so happy by the way at the end of that I know you probably weren't as as happy with it was here's what she was so happy with when we were talking after the game she was like that was Chiron Chiron was authentic that was how excited he was there was no facade there you know in that moment what was that moment like for you all the emotions that you can feel in anything exciting that's what I felt and the hard work the dedication that the players are put in that Coach Harbaugh is put in this program all came out in that moment and and for our people people out the outside to think you know our players didn't win fairly or do something or do that like it was just kind of like okay bet this is what what we're about we're going to go attack the moment we did and now what can you say about us and without our head coach you know we proved ourselves right that we can go in in this big environment and it was a moment that you know was just unfiltered um unfortunately the bad words came out I apologize to my mom so that's okay did you get a text or a call from your mom oh yeah I I mean I got reprimanded a little bit it was my mom and my grandma so I was trying to make sure that they didn't uh they weren't too mad at me but they understood the moment and um The Players I think appreciate it because you know I think a lot of in the world today that emotion is kind of seek as weakness and I don't see it as that so you know people can say whatever they want um but we accomplished something pretty special last year the 2023 Michigan football team was the most unique team I've ever been around I don't know how to describe it yeah I want can you describe it what what was it about this group that was so darn special I I can't either I think there's just a love a connection a bond that was unbreakable that you couldn't break you can do whatever you wanted you can talk about them however you wanted but like the love the the connection that everybody had in this building was deeper than anything and it just felt like they could not be stopped it was a juggernaut just ready to go every game um any adversity thrown their way they were ready to break it and uh it was something I'd never been a part of I I just marveled every time I came in at the unself selfish nature you know regardless of the player that we sat with that week you know whether it was sitting with JJ which which we did multiple times whether it was sitting with Blake corm or Donovan Edwards or Jaylen Harold or Chris Jenkins or or Zen you know Zach zenter it didn't matter they they genuinely were completely unselfish and beholden to the team's goals which I like it to be honest it blew my mind the team the team the team that's what we've been built off of and will continue to that way but it was something that I think when you work so hard when you're so close to something two years in a row and you understand what it takes to get there you'll do anything to get to that goal it's funny people talk about the reaction to the Alabama you know see the Alabama like when those cameras turned off the boys were like that's who we wanted that's what we wanted to do and we wanted you know to be the best they always said you got to beat the best [Music] pen State takes on West virgia it's big new when those cameras turned off the boys were like that's who we wanted that's what we wanted to do and we wanted you know to be the best they always said you got to beat the best and they've been the King of the Hill for a long time I know Georgia has won two national championship but Nick had six of them so you know if you wanted to get to the top you had to face a team like that to get there and they were excited for that game and ready and the preparation that they had throughout that month was super special I mean I'd be in the office at 10:00 and I'd see guys in the film room watching film doing you know doing this watching cut UPS texed me at night hey coach what about this look what about this look what what are we doing here and was something that I've never seen all all that's well and good especially you know you can talk about prep you can talk about mindset you can talk about culture but when it has to manifest and you're down and there's under four minutes to go and it's 20 to 13 and you've got to drive on on the Bama defense just to tie the the game up yeah you know um walk me through the last Drive yeah two instances will always be held forever in my mind uh really three so before that drive I'm never really nervous to call a drive never really like anxious that drive I was looking around I looked at the clock I looked at the time I said this is like the most Drive in like Michigan football history that's how I thought of it and uh I looked up to the sky and asked my grandpa like hey Pops I need some help here help me out uh love you and uh I never forget I was walking and all the linemen strapping their helmets on and uh JJ comes up to me and said hey Pops we got you and I was like oh yeah we about to go score on this drive and we' been held like we've been moving the ball a little bit but not as much and that drive we went down and scored in the fourth and2 call so we ran it uh had a play action on Third and two to with orgy in the game it didn't work out they had it covered and it was fourth and two and I knew coach was going to say go for it and uh fourth and two I already knew a call we were going to do I knew the pick R I knew what we were going to do knew how it was and it had set up because we' shifted in motion and made it look the same the whole game and Rand Duo and then they were calling out run yeah and then Blake pops open and you know we we go down the field and then Roman gets the Block in the back so guys are like oh no are we coming back I'm like no no I think we still got the first down and uh we got the first down called The Run option with JJ we hadn't ran that all game and it was set up I was like okay this is the time then came back to a play action that we actually called early in the game with the out spacing wasn't right we fixed it on the sideline and then Roman popped open and made an incredible catch made the guy Miss as he landed and then the play that I called second I was actually going to call first but got a little closer and then all of a sudden called the play action to Roman slipped out and it was a touchdown so um that drive will hold true forever in my mind of how it went down in the time and and uh what happened the result so now we we move forward and and you are now the head coach and and you enter this realm you know for us that analyze the sport from afar we've seen you know your Rivals Ryan day you know promoted from within we saw Lincoln Ry Riley promoted from within we saw with David Shaw when Jim Harbaugh left Stanford promoted from within and yet none of those guys had to do what you're about to do which is take over for the reigning national champions last time that happened was Frank solich when Tom Osborne stepped away in the late 90s from Nebraska so do e e e wats isms you know yeah and and he taught you were with him as a young coach at Louisville when he was the offensive coordinator for the Teddy Bridgewater years at at Louisville can you tell me of those three guys maybe Bob stoop Sean Watson and Jim Harbaugh what what you're pulling from each of those guys yeah uh from Bob the initial Love of the Game game is really where I started to get it even more and really the initial love for loving your players loving your program and how to run an an organization it was just unmatched at the time for me seeing him seeing him in his in his element I would say yeah and what he did on a daily basis to make our team great the motivational factors motivational speeches and things he would say to I loved that adjustment in the booth and I see it just like you do we haven't talked about you're getting this raw chop Robinson you guys are beat up a little bit on the offensive line so you're swinging out Carson has to move out to right tackle you know you're doing some things chop Robinson on the first two third Downs of the game Beast you guys just whiff and he hits JJ now JJ got the ball out so they weren't sacks yeah I I turned to the guys in the booth namely Steve who's who's my guy I turned to him in the booth and I was like I was like they can't block Chop Chop Robinson and and immediately you went to seven offensive linemen on the field got the extra gaps just slowed the game down you like okay let let's settle in and then you end up running the ball 32 straight times I was like that is brilliant that is brilliant and you're telling me you don't want to do that well I'm not saying like I won't do it again cuz if it has to be done we will but uh it wasn't your plan wasn't the plan it wasn't the plan wasn't the plan at all it just just kind of happened that way and uh at the end of the day we're going to do whatever it takes to win so if we got to do that we will am I looking at the same the same thing you were it was like oh that that guy's going to be problem he was coming off the ball fast and it was loud yeah and uh you had to change up the snack count move the pocket which we moved the pocket a little bit too and did some of that but he was coming off the ball fast salute to you chop and he'll have a great career in the NFL and but you watched him every game it was like that yep especially at home at their place he did a great job of timing up the snap count so had to make an adjustment and uh but also felt like we're getting that movement in the Run game pretty well and when you got two backs like we do um super cool to do that but the coolest part about that is you know JJ Roman Cornelius Colston AJ they just say what do you need us to do to go win this game yeah that's I'm just like this team is unbelievable like usually be like oh I want my catch and like I'm like guys we're we're let's just go win this game they're like we got you w we did uh Chiron Moore thank you for your time man best of luck next year buddy appreciate it you got it absolutely Tom Brady makes his debut in the booth for America's game are in the end zone and getting ready for kickoff officially 901 eastern time here in Minneapolis UNC in Minnesota for now Joel clatts conversation with Nebraska head coach Matt rule so I expect us to have a really good team this year I expect us to make some make some runs I expect us to be a team that people don't want to play most influential people in the sport talking about the sport globally on this episode of big noon conversations I talk with Matt rule the head coach of the Nebraska Corn [Music] Huskers Matt rule head coach of the Nebraska Corn Huskers thanks for joining us man appreciate it uh appreciate your time um started off every uh conversation like this what's the best part about being the head coach at Nebraska um I'd say uh living in Nebraska you know that might that might shock people across the country but it's it's probably I've lived a lot of places probably the best group of people I've ever been around um like a hardworking a population of people that you know love Nebraska football so if you're a football guy I can't think of a better place to live in the country than Nebraska I I mean I'll attest to that I know I'm I I played at Colorado but having to play Nebraska and Lincoln twice during my career I tell you what always shocked me so much is and this is as unique and weird a feeling as you'll get is that we you had to warm up in front of 90,000 cuz they're in their seats like an hour before the game that's right I'm warming up and I'm like this this is wild it it created a really uneasy feeling having all those people watch the warm-ups yeah I think that's I think that's not just a love of football I think that's a love of all the players I I've heard a couple people say like we come to support everybody from the first warm-up to to the last snap of the game no matter what the score is we're going to we're going to watch the Huskers and so my my first time my first home it was my first home game and sitting out there and Isaac gford is our senior free safety and I'm sitting there warmups like Blown Away by the amount of people there and he looked at me he goes coach this never gets old man and he's you know he's a senior he's a he's a Husker and he was right well it's an exciting time around your program uh right now and um I personally think that you guys are going to be a really good football team this next fall but it's even more than that it's it's you getting there it's your second year uh the optimism around the program in particular a program that is you know maybe this is too strong a word but that fan base desperate for the return of of the Huskers you know what do you feel about that excitement and that momentum well I think I think the word desperate is is not a bad word I think that's exactly the right word Joel because um people people love their team yeah it's it's like you know being in Texas and being in a one school town you know I mean they they love that team and and I think the thing is for me coming from the Northeast you know coming from where all the places I've been um you get there and and they' sold the crowd out for so long that maybe you take that for granted and uh immediately I didn't want to take that for granted immediately I wanted to return a product that people wanted to come see and and we're proud to see and you start talking to people all across the state and they're telling you these memories of coming to games with you know their grandfather and their uncle and you know these people were you working jobs or farming or ranching and the only time they would make sure they could get off was to come watch those games and you're like man there's an unbelievable uh importance to not just winning but to doing things in a way that represents people in Nebraska what excites you about not only this season but what you're building and and the the momentum that you're creating yeah when when I looked in Nebraska I saw the facilities I saw the fan base I saw the financial situation I saw a school that had no debt you know one of the only only only big 10 schools with no debt uh in the age we're getting ready to move into I thought well this place is uniquely positioned I saw a history of Excellence my question was can we recruit there sure you know like you know I had people telling me like hey you know it's in the middle of the country it's going be hard to recruit hey why don't you wait for a job in Texas or Florida or something like that and I kind of fell in love with the place but that was always my question so getting there and seeing a how how cool of a town Lincoln is how big of a city the Omaha is how much the football's pretty good in that area there's a lot of division one players coming out of that area um then saying that they're still a national pool man I still can wear this I can still wear this to a airport in Florida I'm goingon to get a go Big Red I promise you so we have we still have some pull now we have to play well but we can we can get players that come to Nebraska we get players that want to come play in those facilities um and uh so that's why I'm excited because we have a pretty good team you know I how that you know I'm a coach I'm not going to say too much but uh I think we have a pretty good team I have like kind of a quiet confidence when I walk around about where we're headed is it this year I think it is is it the next year definitely and so I'm really excited about that I always love when Phil Steels magazine comes out every year and one of the things he uses to predict success the next year is usually close losses lead close wins and turnovers usually lead to turnarounds like it would if we let me tell you this right now if we are if we are minus 17 again this year I'm I'm going to be I'm going to be playing golf okay [Music] the stage is set there are Clues everywhere what the heck is that you guys are all missing the biggest [Applause] clue hey college football fans Joel clatt here over on my podcast the Joel clat show we are bringing you the best college football analysis every week I discuss the best teams the best players and the biggest story story lines in college football with new episodes every week the Joel class show is your complete college football Roundup any questions then send them into the Joel clat show mailbag follow the Joel clad show on the Fox Sports app Apple Spotify or wherever you get your [Music] podcast you're a builder you know I've said this several times on this show uh about you specifically um and it's why candidly so many programs have been enamored with the thought of trying to get you in their program as their head coach and Nebraska was able to do that you did it at Temple you did it at Baylor those are places that were not easy to do that in particular I know Baylor had won before you were there but I think people forget what had happened there and what you actually took over um after um uh coach Gro was in there and that was a difficult job so my confidence level is in is in you as a builder um is that what you see yeah F first of all thank you um yeah I think so and I think I think it's because our staff uh we we we are not afraid of failure uh we are not afraid to go two and 10 our first year one in1 our first Year everyone talks about building a culture and I don't even know what that is sometimes well to me it's it's getting the best people possible and setting high standards for how you do things and if that means that hey I'm going to play the the guys who will do things right early on and we might not lose or or because you know we're trying to recruit freshman not take a quick fix um we're willing to go through that you know our bad year here was 5- seven instead of 2 and 10 which is much better than two and 10 than thank goodness BR but I think once the players realize like hey these guys are for real man like they're going to they coach Ru would rather lose than win by doing things the wrong way and so we we're going to buy into doing things the wrong way and the staff like I've never fired a coach after a first year like you know we go 11 11 2 and 10 everyone thinks you're going to fire everybody I'm like what are we talking about we did our best work this year and so in those triage years we are setting the program up quietly to have long-term success you know Baylor had Baylor won a championship after we were gone with those same kids because they had been trained the right way so I think that's that building the first thing you do when you want to build a building is you do what you got to dig and you got to go down you have to actually go theong way to go the right way and not everyone's willing to do that especially nowadays with nil portal and all that and and yet I mean you say you know five and seven and yeah maybe from the outside that doesn't look like success okay fine fine however if you actually dig into your season and you watch it and you see what you were to begin the season and what you were to end the season the games that you were in and more specifically the ways that you lost those seven games you got your turnover issue was wild wild 15 turnovers and and I think five of your losses which you know that goes the other way and it's not even just a five- seven season in a triage year it's something much better and you're going to a bowl game that's why I have confidence moving forward I'm like boy it's really small these margins between what they did last year at 5 and seven and and potentially a really good solid year yeah you know I I always love when Phil Steels magazine comes out every year and one of the things he uses to predict success the next year is usually close losses lead to close wins and turnovers usually lead to turnarounds like it would if we let me tell you this right now if we are if we are minus 17 again this year I'm I'm gonna be I'm gonna be playing golf okay they won't have me back as the coach and they shouldn't like be because it was it was a phenomenon that just kind of built on itself and so obviously I didn't do a good enough job but we won't be that this year I think you can make an argument that experience is is really the currency that now college football is moving towards you know yeah we can talk about nil all we want we can talk about transfer portal and all those things are important and I'm not going to suggest that they're not but when you see some of the teams that are now all of the sudden taking leaps and making Headway into the top echelons of the sport Washington veteran team Michigan National Championship that was a veteran football team now all of a sudden here you guys are going to have five returning offensive linemen most of your defense back and I think you've recruited really well the skill position players and gotten some some guys out of the portal at those those position positions as as well when when you look at the experience level and factor of your team is that something that that tips you in the direction of knowing like this this could be a year that's that's very good absolutely I think um I think there's experience and as we move forward in the college football playoff era depth you're going to be playing 17 games yes so you know while an NFL team has a 53 man roster there's unlimited transactions so it might take 90 guys to have 53 men for us you know uh what's unique us as I think we have like 19 returning starters we also have 82 freshman and sophomores so we are I remember talking about that before the Colorado game and I was like wa wait is that is that number real it's wild so we have these like really and it was it was a blessing for us three of our best players Ben Scott Bryce benhart Isaac gford all decided to come back for go to the NFL Ty Robinson for four guys that had draftable grades decided to not go to the NFL I told some of them I'm like you should go to the NFL bro what are you doing and they're like no I want to come back and so I have this Elite experience that's really talented and also a bunch of really good young players that are watching them so that's why I think we can win this year because of that experience and then those young players are going to be experienced the following years and that kind of is how to me you build something that eventually can hopefully make that jump to be in the college football playoff conversation a lot of the excitement is going to center around signing a five-star quarterback uh you know so here comes Rola he's a number one recruit in the country in a lot of Publications I think he's gonna be a guy that all of college football [Music] knows pen State takes on West Virginia watch out it's big newon Saturday only on Fox [Music] [Applause] [Music] the nature of the sport is also changing in the structure of the sport I don't think it's it's not lost on me that the transfer portal and N nil have opened up access to the top echelons of the sport you look at the four teams that have just competed for a national championship in the last couple of years three of them were TCU Washington and Michigan we would have never said that six years ago it was a Alabama Clemson that's what it was going to be do you think that that college football is in a place where anybody is going to have not only access but can project themselves out to go up and potentially compete for a national championship yeah I'd say no doubt I think um you even look at like uh the top schools and where they're recruiting from and how it's changed over the last 10 years where was very Regional before now now you're recruiting nationally because you want to build a relationship maybe get them then maybe when they go in the portal in two years you get them then and so you you do have access to a lot more players you do have players and I think as we move into the next era whether it's Revenue sharing or how it works people are not going to have to just decide how much they want Joel clad they're going to have to decide how much they want a page clat yeah and so you know a young man's going to look at an opportunity I can go there for you know 20,000 I can go there for 70,000 and so you know really roster makeup and the decisions you make with if it's a similar pot it's going to be really really interesting and it does open up access and it does bring about parity you know the NFL is the the most parity driven League that there is yeah I mean you're you're a lot of the excitement is going to center around signing a five-star quarterback uh you know so here comes Rola and tell us about what it's been like to not only land him which was you know he was the number one recruit in the country in a lot of Publications uh but also what it's meant to your your team when you watch them practice and and uh what it could be for you for your offense yeah I mean Dylan's uh Talent is is only matched by his by who he is as a person you know I mean his family you know obviously you know his father was a great Husker um father played you know 14 years in the NFL as an offense Al lineman the most unselfish position that there is and as a center you know um a great great mom great sister great younger brothers his uncle's our offensive line coach and so the great thing for us was in recruiting you know that he came because he knew what the the program was really like on the inside that sends a message to everybody else in recruiting that hey this is a good place the iy actually really I was going to go somewhere else I know what's happening here you should trust it you should come yeah I think the second part of it is so so now you're now you're attracting players from all across the country that want to come play with him but at the end of the day to your point it comes down to the football and um you know he has a unique feel for the game he's really really smart you know you always hear Tom Brady and those guys talk about when your best players work the hardest you have a great team well well Dylan Dylan's one of those guys who tries to work the hardest and so um you know people talk a lot about turnovers last year which we should I'd go back and say if we can throw the ball better you know if we can complete third and five if we can you know if we're not throwing you know interceptions if we can be more aggressive because we trust our decision making and so that's been one of the challenges for Dylan that's been one of the CH challenges for Danny and for Hinrich um you know everyone wants to know who the starting quarterback's going to be in Nebraska I'm always like hey it's going to take probably two maybe three in this 17 game Seasons that that we want to have um and so he he certainly has helped us raise the level of play and I think he's going to be a guy that all of college football knows I just expect us to make a massive jump from year one to year two and I expect our best jump to be from year two to year three so I expect us to have a really good team this year I expect us to make some make some runs I expect us to be a team that people don't want to [Music] play the NFL is back on Bock with a huge double header first it's Vikings Giants then Tom Brady makes his debut in the booth as the Cowboys take on the grounds it all kicks off September 8th on VX do you have benchmarks in your head having done this before at Temple and Baylor and knowing what it it was like and and to be fair though the structure of the game is so much different now than it was you know because you didn't build Baylor and Temple within iil and transfer portal you know as part of college football but even with that just as a coach you've got a feel for for how it's going do you have benchmarks yeah I just expect us to make a a massive jump from year one to year two and I expect our best jump to be from year two to year three you know I think like I think you go from playing losing football to winning football winning football to championship football um the question I've said the whole time since I've been at Nebraska T our guys is you know make year two year one make year three year two like let's not go through the two and 10 let's not let's not fight and why are we doing this just buy into it and do it and we in in many ways last year was like a second year for me um so I expect us to have a really good team this year I expect us to make some make some runs I expect us to be a team that people don't want to play and so um now as we look at you know college football now you know I always want us to to win a bll game I want us to be in the conference title race and I want us to fight to go play in the college football playoff and then win it yeah and so where we are there why I I mean I certainly expect us to be a bowl eligible team can we be a team that challenges to go play in the college football playoff um I don't know I I I think I think if we weren't -7 if all a sudden that was plus s we we might we might make some noise and so you know that's really my challenge to the guys is like hey let's let's let's let's fix the turnover issue let's get really good on offense to match our defense and then then we'll go play we'll see what happens that Colorado Nebraska game uh you mentioned it from from a year ago now it's going to be in your place and with with everything surrounding their program because man there's there's a lot of energy obviously at Colorado and a lot of eyeballs on Colorado you know and that's obviously what coach Prime has has brought there but now all of a sudden that that game is a monster you know almost like it used to be when Colorado Nebraska would play Friday after Thanksgiving and it would be for for the division or for the big eight you know right to go to the Orange Bowl that's how I grew up with it you know I mean it was it was a classic and for the first time in a long time it feels like both programs have high expectations and that game early in the season is a Monster game yeah it's um you know I think the one thing that we always have to remember when we when we talk about Colorado is how great shador is you know he's he is um one of the best football players I've ever coached against and you know we blitzed him I think we sacked him like 10 times and we hit him a ton and he stood in there and so you know I know everyone sees you know shador on commercials they see him you know they see the Swagger that he plays with but he's an unbelievable competitor and he's tough and so to me you take you know shador you take you know Travis Hunter you take all the players that they have you take obviously coach Sanders you know they're going to come into our place they're a really good football team with with Dynamic players that you have to compete with how good is it for like that part of the country to have this game and have it be National TV at night like how good is it for the game of football like I don't I just don't want football to become like you know this area of the country this area of the country I want it to be from coast to coast you know I want all 50 states and what what what what Dion has done in my opinion is he's made football relevant to maybe people that weren't watching it and so it's our chance to to to kind of come into that game and people are going to tune in to see them yeah and they'll have a chance to watch us too and if we play well maybe people will have that same energy about us nationally that they have about them um last thing I want to kind of chat about is is I think that experiences in life are are how we grow uh in a lot of ways I've I've grown the most in my life both both personally and professionally and even going back when I was a player through failure um what did you learn at Carolina and and then your experience in the NFL you know I'd say I learned a lot I'd say I learned a lot of things I would not be able to be the head coach of Nebraska had I gone through that um every decision you make is magnified in Nebraska 10 times over and if you're not really confident in who you are I could see it really affecting you I could see you you know compromising you know I have such a different relationship with our players now like when I'm able to tell them cuz you know this generation is so concerned with how people see them and you for me you know I've been I've been National coach of the year you know I've been I've been you know oh hopefully we can have him be our coach I've been a meme and laughed at on Sports Center you know and as R Kipling says you know if you if you can meet with Triumph and disaster and treat those two imposters the same and so I've been able to teach my own kids that um you know when I go out there now and and the crowd's cheering I've also had 50,000 70,000 people in Panther Stadium U screaming to fire me and what I learned through all of that is man I I just want to make it about my players I just it's not about me and coaches say that but they mean it is about them it's really not about me like I came back to college football because I knew young people needed coaches that cared about them coaches that don't want to throw them away coaches that don't want to give up on them coaches that want to make a environment where they can be safe to have failures but grow I'm so much closer with my players now and that's why I believe Nebraska will win and you know what we'll win and people will be like coach are you going to go here you're going to go there and no I love Nebraska and I love the people there and I love my players because For the First Time they're not the players they're my players and I love these guys um and just that time in Carolina maybe re reborn that to me and that's why I'm so happy to be back in college football all right listen I appreciate sitting here talking but we can't sit here and not hit a golf shot when we're staring at a golf golf course so what do you think let's do it let's do it all right here we go I got a 50 and a 56 so we're good to go that's not you just went the hole you just went over you're on the green I'm there on the GRE nice nice almost made it I'm done all right all right all right you win Tom Brady makes his debut in the may but uh North Carolina still has this guy the All-American Omarian Hampton fifth in the FBS in rushing yards last season getting ready to run against Minnesota matter minut right here kick off but late until 9:00 because of weather we're here back in studio mike Hill of course coach Chris Peterson and Emanuel AO getting you ready for the big important match up first game of the season hey nerves don't know what to expect the first game of the season weather delays how important is it winning the first game of the season it's everything was it all a lie the first game of the season will convince the player if it was all a lie or not what I mean by that is summer workouts the coach to my left Chris Peterson is saying fellas we can win it all this year we can go to the playoffs and we can win it all this year but if you get smacked in the first game all of a sudden in the locker room when you're driving back home in your apartment in your dorm you're saying to yourself man coach was lying to me that whole time so the first game really dictates the trajectory of the season for the young players a coach will always maintain their Poise and their confidence but for the players was it all a lie the 6 a.m. workouts the grueling practices was it all a lie that's what the first game can tell a player you want to get off to that good start okay who's who's going to get off to a good start tonight coach this is a tough one this is a nice matchup I mean I love Coach Brown the best in the business he's so good I think Omari and Hampton's the best player on the field yeah what I don't like about North Carolina is four out of five new linemen playing two quarterbacks it sounds like yeah that makes me nervous replacing a guy like Drake May yeah that so yeah so I kind of go back I I had a conversation with PJ Fleck about a week ago and I couldn't believe how he was talking about his quarterback ma Max brosmer transfer from New Hampshire FCS allamerican I mean you think this guy's the next coming of Joe Montana so I got to tell you both I'm rowing the boat tonight okay sorry I know that hurt you I'm rolling the boat hey you know what North Carolina won the match up last year off to a six and0 star for North Carolina both of these teams finished medoc down the stretch we'll see what happens in Game number one tonight about to get ready on Fox Jason Benet and Brock hu with the call Mike thank you very much welcome to Fox college football sponsored by All State you're in good hands with all state it took an hour extra for the skies to clear but North Carolina and Minnesota are together and with an expanded college football playoff more teams can reasonably say they could get to the cfp reasonably the word of college football season for fans everywhere let's be unreasonable together for college football Jason benetti Brock hu Allison Williams downstairs in a moment let's start with football being back you have that smile on your face what's inside well I'm hearing the trumpets being played it's just the right time to get this thing going because there's been all this talk and all this chatter and it's great oh we're wonderful and both these coaches really like their teams this season but there's a beauty to this game in the opening weekend the truth gets told when the pads get put on you're not hitting your own team you're not hitting familiar guys and often there's a little humility and a little failure and the team that handles that best usually comes out better on the other side PJ Fleck for the home team for Minnesota loves his team right now he loves his quarterback really loves the quarterback yes he does most competitive group he's had in his years since 2017 the most competition throughout his roster and he's got a quarterback that reminds some people people around here a Tanner Morgan a veteran guy and Max brosmer six-year quarterback transfer from New Hampshire an All-American and man were they raving about him raving about his arm raving about his leadership raving about his processing they can't put too much on him and Jason if he's half as good as everybody in that building feels like he is then well reasonably they may have a conversation late in the year about getting to that 12 team playoff it's college football season nobody in that sea of gold is going to be reasonable and that's the fun of it here come the [Applause] goers somebody's got to be the road team in week one it's North Carolina returning a game from last year m brown knows one thing he has an All-American running back can Carolina get over that hump to 91 wins he does and with that running back he knows he's been around this game for almost 50 years his wisdom is second to none he knows two things Jason they've worn down at the end of the year the last two seasons have got to play more people throughout the entire roster and then they've got to play complimentary football they've not done that they've been a terrific offense since his return but they've got to play complimentary to their defense and there's no better weapon than I don't know A500 yd back a guy with 15 touchdowns and the most remarkable thing about the All-American Hampton a year ago five touchdowns of 50 plus this guy doesn't just hit singles and doubles he hits Grand salamis here we go college football season on a Thursday night we'll take it a break with our game countdown sponsored by Progressive the North Carolina Tar Heels the Minnesota Golden Gophers kickoff is coming up next from the Twin Cities hey FL cool leg warmers football sponsored by All State you're in good hands with all state Mother Nature even got the memo about the gold out tonight here in Minneapolis as we check in on the status of Carolina's quarterback with Allison Williams yeah Jason so many questions will be answered tonight but for UNC the biggest mystery has been who will start at quarterback the Tar Heels are electing to go with their graduate transfer Max Johnson citing his experience he started 22 games in the SEC his consistency and his ability to take care of the football [Music] [Music] Liam Boyd on the coach for the Tar Heels here we go North Carolina Minnesota ACC Big 10 and Minnesota will have the football first you mentioned Max brosmer this is the first time that Max brosmer is going to have his last name on the back of his jersey he transferred from New Hampshire by way of Centennial High School in Georgia he comes from the FCS level he thought he had to bring his own pad to the hotel last night he's ready to go and Lead this team with all that pedigree in that building the body language looks calm you can see the sweat on the back of the neck I've always clamored for a heart rate monitor on these guys they say he's ice water in his veins calm cool and collected and here goes his Minnesota [Applause] Career this final college football season begins with a throw he looked off major and now rolls to his right on the opening passive his go for a tenure it's incomplete and second down coming up for Minnesota on the offensive line that's a big dude on the left side arante ursery in NFL prospect tell me which one isn't big 66 66 66 67 I mean they are a gigantic UPF front even the center the youngster the only youngster of that group with a lot of experience Greg Johnson 66 Daniel Jackson you will see him everywhere second Team all conference a year ago he'll be in the back field he'll be in the slot they're big weapon he's in the back field right now with Jordan e e e e [Applause] illegal formation kicking team that 5y penalty will be added to the end of the run first and 10 North Carolina so the Tar Heels will get an extra five Max Johnson he spent two years in Baton Rouge at LSU 14 starts couple of Seasons there he moved on in the SEC Texas A&M which had a coaching change he was 4 and four as a starter there typically protects the football and he's now got the job here in Chapel Hill his father Brad played here in the Twin Cities and he's just short of Midfield on his first touch he's got a great running back behind him inviting contact om Arion Hampton Max Johnson under Center your thoughts very comp the battle to the point that Mac did not show his hands in fact both guys were running with the ones m brown really felt like ma Springs some confidence been a lot of places some dysfunctional places the last two stops and talking to the coaching staff really are hoping for the bone Nick's experience right people right place more production Maran Hampton said he wanted to be more of a weapon out of the back field he breaks a tackle and sets up a third down and medium for North Carolina so Hampton the allamerican behind this offensive line Willie lampin 511 at Right Guard look at him stuck next to his 6'7 teammate Trey Green could do it a little bit differently at guard get underneath people and mo people the only guy on that old line by the way that's ever started a Collegian game McCollum was a nightmare for Minnesota a year ago 15 catches in this matchup with a lot of inexperience up front Minnesota trying to get better on third down under a new defensive coordinator Johnson with some backside heat got it to the sideline and this is caught for the first down JJ Jones who had 46 catches last year that's pretty and look at Carolina quickly getting to the ball as every play is reviewed that is that Jordan right there looks almost like a Jordan poster right there by JJ gave him the Jump Man draging the toe and let's see we have a whistle PJ wants a timeout wants to make sure that replay Booth had enough time that's tremendous body control by the veteran receiver Jones leading receiver in yards and re receps the season to go for Drake May big third down conversion m brown at age 73 already salty already into the season he was a basketball player in high school Jones first down it looks like at the Jeep make this The Summer Event EV your freedom your vote let's take a look at stay in the game sponsored by Hampton by Hilton Hilton for the state we talked about this in the open playing complimentary football helping your defense out Max teams have really looked a lot like their basketball team they played in transition that Carolina blue up and down the court up and down the field he knows to win games late though you can't wear down a defense and play more people complimentary ball and Minnesota wants to throw it to run it PJ came out threw it twice on that opening drive unfortunately not the execution good good job blowing the bubbles better than the passing game on that opening Series play action to Omar on Hampton now it's Johnson rolling and throwing and he'll just spray it out of bounds John Joiner their sack leader last year provided the heat I think they were trying trying to set up a screen whenever you see all those linemen like that go to that one side of the field trying to roll away throw a throwback screen nothing there and that's what happens with experience 5 years of playing you don't force it if it's not there especially on first down Live to play another day throw it away especially with Omari on in the back field you know that he can break tackles as he bus his way across the 35 one of the best tackle Breakers at all of college football last year sets up a third and short and here is the Minnesota defense including join of the pass R here been around a long time a lot of beef up front 65 280 amongst that group as again Carolina hurries to that line they will beat Hampton and he goes down to set up a fourth down Coleman Bryson burst through among others we've seen this already here on a couple plays by new D coordinator heatherman and that has been aggression secondary players at the line of scrimmage moving pieces and here you go first big decision of the game as you see Cory getting After High Juice high energy wants his guys to play aggressively got to get to the 28 fourth down first of the Season Johnson short set sideline ball and that's incomplete Jones couldn't toet tap this time Minnesota gets a stop media time [Applause] out golden goers known for their defense the past bunch of years get a stop to hand it back to PJ Flex offense some people just know they could save hundreds on car insurance by checking all state first we DED today of is sponsored by AFC it's Finger Licking Good North Carolina rolled up more than 500 yd of offense last year Matt Brown and Sally were very happy with a 3113 final score for North Carolina 3 for2 on third Downs didn't help Drake May was the quarterback for North Carolina this is the first time they've been without Sam how or Drake May in an opener since 2018 so Caroline's going to figure that out here's Minnesota with the ball for the second time W out Darius Taylor their leading rusher from last year Marcus major the Oklahoma transfer who has been so impressive barreling his way for a big gain on first down five years at Oklahoma the playing time dwindled PJ Fleck was enamored with him he was he said youd never fully know right they're like free agents at the NFL level but from day one he's wowed them once the pads came on it was the next step and you know when you compare yourself to that guy that wore 24 for PJ Mohammad Abraham who put up a lot of yards that's a comparison that's been made because he's No Nonsense blue collar and he'll run right through yet they are 64% runs since 2017 under PJ FL you said it run to pass it and there's power Eckles backto back years 100 tackles plus and man did he burst through the door oh just look at the guys getting downhill I think for both of these defenses tonight that's going to be such a key look at the line of scrimmage where the ball is snapped and then quickly right there two of those guys in Carolina blue on the other side right that good oldfashioned game of tug of-war too much catching a year ago too much reacting not enough dictating that guy's built to dictate sets up a third down here for [Music] Minnesota Jackson at the top of your screen there Le receiver they'll look out of the back field and a big hit nben gets decked by Elijah huzzy what a play this is a little bit of the illusion of complexity that m brown wants from his defense a whole bunch of different pieces moving around but in the end it's cover two it's a little bit of a four-man Rush from different spots but huzzy knows I have got that zone I am the boundary corner I'm the Cloud Corner he has his eyes in the backfield and that's textbook from the six-year veteran cornerback and now he goes back to return the punt from Crawford line drive just a Clos line that keeps on rolling all the way to St Paul those Aussies they're so crazy with that football what was that that was like a two iron stinger straight from Australia from the 30-year-olds it was raining sideways earlier it's raining football sideways now for Crawford a 56 yd punt when migraine strikes you're faced with a choice ride it out with the trade-offs of treating or push through the pain and symptoms with ueli there's another option one do Works satar I didn't grow up here in Minnesota but I love our Lakes I also love working where there's a spirit of Discovery tackling real problems like how to keep our leges free of invasive species and this stuff how do we do it with a swimming robot and a spirit of never- ending curiosity that straps on the fs and goggles and gets to work so swim proud Minnesota the miniot swims for you the NFL is back on box with a huge double header first it's Steelers Falcons then Tom Brady makes his debut in the booth as the Cowboys take on the grounds it all kicks off September 8th on Fox when Max Johnson's father Brad played his two stints with the Vikings they had a roof so he didn't have to sit in the rain he was twice a Minnesota Viking in the 90s and then 05 and 06 and there are the two brothers Johnson who play on this team Max his brother Jake a tight end for North Carolina and what a homecoming a home really for this family a couple of times in the NFL line so cool and such a journey his son has been on and I know he's hoping the third time a charm om Maran Hampton on this run and just a couple of yards he's stacked up Brad was listening to Something in the crowd he had the headphones on Dad coach onlooker well that's also like on the airplane when you put the headphones on and not hear anything anybody else is saying around you dialed in here's his son Max on the roll on second down and he lost his footing it is raining down there and it's third down coming up you see he's trying to get his footing and stop that foot yeah they felt like Max said he's a better athlete that he gets credit for he's a big guy 65 225 but he can run a little bit you're absolutely right that inside wheel it spits out first spit Underneath Him and a difficult third and seven in your own End Zone you have to protect the football Hampton had to get close for the play it's loud back there that's nearly intercepted zaquan Bryan had it right in his mid it's fourth down well that's now all three third Downs you've seen the same concept and that is attacking the boundary right oneon-one out there it's going to end up first time was a beautiful catch and you see his receiver JJ Jones fall down nearly catastrophic giving the ball away as JJ ends up on his backside and Brian yes gets the knock away but could have had an enormous interception to flip the field last time Minnesota played an ACC team in the Twin Cities they got five interceptions against Wake Forest in the late 60s and they nearly blocked that punt mcginness does get it away and reading has to wave it off it's not exactly a technical video with 54 yd and 56 yd punts gets the job done Max brosmer back out Allison Williams yeah and this Minnesota offense trying to get something going after the opening three and outs and brosmer told us I'm not naive I know the first few possessions are going to feel fast but I believe in my ability to adapt and have complete confidence in the guys around me and that was a word we heard a lot yesterday from coaches talking about brosmer the confidence he plays with how he doesn't get rattled and I'll tell you just watching him a little bit here on the sidelines he is he is so calm very businesslike demeanor I'd add a couple things to that as well Allison a great report and that's number one making adjustments he said it that's what he does best as he processes the game and number two you're also trying to figure out these key coordinators I think both offensive staffs are really playing right now a game of discovery of exactly what are they going to get from these two new DCS on both sides it's a first down run for major and he is slung down by power echles what a greeting in the hole and what what you're seeing once again I think about three of the four runs is Carolina reestablishing that line of scrimmage for Jeff Collins the minister of Mayhem wants chaos he wants psychos out there that are cutting it loose and not thinking too much thinking a season ago too many big plays that followed it there's some tremendous athletes Big Time recruits four stars five stars let him go play and cut it Loose he literally picks a psycho in every practice second down rosmer gets his running back in his lap and down he goes Javari ritzy took him [Applause] down yeah one guy took him down but it was this right here it was this pressure off the edge Edge and uh hello Jordan nuben how does my face mask taste as I drive you back that is stick Lane right there from the secondary driving that back and then there is nowhere to go single digits all over him and ritzy in Rucker a nightmare for brosmer he became truck stick Lane on second down third and 19 they sped up the timer on brary got of the way new looking for the stick and he got there he had to have 19 and just just knows the ball wow and once again this is just a Savvy quarterback with some experience everything's breaking down the pocket once again where's my outlet knowing exactly where to get the ball and then put it right on that front shoulder pad so the nuben can break the tackle of the valley and get the First rosmer with confidence lobbing it near side it's in complete for Jackson here's a marker it's Marcus Allen on the coverage and contact Jason it did not look like much and it's a subtle little checkdown but the fact that brosmer could get to that the fact that he ball placement wise could put it right in a position if Newman has to stop if he slows down levali makes that tackle but he leads him he leads to a big first down both on the defense 12 man on the field defense that penalty will be declined pass interference Defense number 27 15yd penalty from the previous spot automatic first down they call those passes accurate and advanceable AA balls in the Minnesota program yeah and that was perfect and it set up this once again now we get a one-on-one we take a shot there is no effort by the Allen whatsoever to turn around he goes right through the body and for offense that was dying for big plays and explosive plays a season ago backto back chunk plays now in Carolina territory that's worth 34 yds they'll check [Applause] again toss it to Major cutting up field and Marcus major knocked down about the 31 by the junior out of Greensboro Travis Shaw 25 different run checks in this system for brosmer 25 yeah and he'd loved to toss it to Darius Taylor an absolute stud a season ago but all freshman in yards per game they don't have them but 25 is a lot in an NFL Playbook or an NFL game plan you might have 10 to 15 in the Run game but 25 different alerts 25 different checks and as Greg Harbo said I can't overload this QB he wants all of it second and six for brosmer Qui Choice again and he slings it right around the line to game to elah Spencer and now they're cooking a little bit Brock now that wasn't quite the accurate advancement but this is a big time catch Spencer knows he's going to get absolutely sandwiched on that little stick route and he doesn't care rosmer is trying to protect him and throw him away from the outside CM down but the problem is there's inside contact and Spencer says I don't care let me give you a manageable third and one Minnesota was great on fourth down last year this is a third down and one and brosmer just pushes forward for a first down look at the big Right Guard Clin Carol right there they flip-flo their guard and tackle a season ago 77 Carol a veteran graduated from Notre Dame started a tackle last year but his future is a guard and the big man and he is a big man at six 7 and 315 got his pads down and moved people Jason this is 67 335 in Lewis 67 and 315 I mentioned to you A Center in Johnson at 66 320 take a look in the best of them the left tackle ursery shot to be a first round pick with the way that man moves that's a fully developed offensive line he lost his shoe that's the only thing that can get him off the field at this point you take a timeout for that they're going to hear is a time out for the big guys Sho full Med time first down when we come back for the Gophers who are driving [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] focused and never miss a play I'm always watching always looking to reward more full-time fans Fox college football is sponsored by Pacific Life creating Financial Security for nearly 160 years Sheets of Rain I mean listen to that that's what this was like 3 hours ago so they delayed the start 1 hour it's been raining intermittently during the game but a beautiful night and a great Crow these students don't care this gold out they have been waiting for this one PJ fle look good in non-conference games 21 and two on his 10 tremendous at home as well with one loss in those rosmer play action with time he'll drop it off and he's inaccurate incom complet at the of major second down and new to college football this year the NFL style of helmet communication you see brosar reaching to here no more ridiculous signs no more ridiculous sign concealers no more paranoia now you just there's there's paranoia still belich is not New England anymore so not quite as much paranoia and everybody can communicate that Green Dot on the back of the helmet tells you who's getting it power Echo linebacker for Carolina and obviously brosmer under Center here with Minnesota yeah one player on each side and they kill it at 15 seconds on the play clock Marcus major skipping to the third level and picking up about nine A to B there is just not much wiggle and that's okay when you're 6 foot and 220 lbs and you've got a plan and a mission watch watch from the time he takes this ball kind of like elite point guards go right down the middle of the basketball court watch this until he feels that safety and he can make that little cut to get the yards after contact beforehand I'm going to go A to B as fast as I can and a really manageable third and short call at third and two big package in there for Minnesota it's a hand off right up the zipper first and goal for major well after all it is Minnesota so you know what that means we're going to have a jumbo package you can't have a PJ fle football team unless you got jumbo ursery does a terrific job Quin Carroll uses the buttocks on the backside to just block people out and I am telling you man urser 66 330 in his times if they are to believe be believed with his 10 yard split he's going to shatter records at the combine a big man the K Allison told us earlier he runs with the wide receivers rosmer deflected an incomplete that was hit at the line and so it was behind Spencer second and goal yeah and if it was not tipped at the line of scrimmage just going to be a touchdown every offense in America runs this concept they call it mesh you see the hands go up by Rucker not just a pass rusher has a feel when he doesn't get home to put those paws up that saved a touchdown that mesh route the shallow crosses cutting right across the field won't show up as anything but a pass break up but that was a touchdown sa second Team all ACC last year C and Rucker nuben counteraction nothing there down he goes he'll lose a yard Caleb cost from the secondary on the stop I think both 's as they talk to their staff over the course of this game are going to say what are we seeing what kind of pictures are we looking at in both sides Minnesota and car Ina putting those secondary Guys near the line of scrimmage putting the safeties in the nickel that's Jeff Collins right there on a critical I mean this is a a four-point play right here couple of tight ends in for brosmer on Third and goal it's a handoff major strung out he goes jaen Harris on the pursuit fourth and [Applause] goal yeah the pit is manto man but watch this play I just mentioned these secondary players look at splitting splitting two blocks as Harris again a six-year player five years to North Carolina State the awareness to see the blocks coming to shoot the Gap to split it and then that four-point play hold these Gophers to a field goal attempt a highly accurate kicker Dron kesich who was 23 for 27 last year for the opening points and he DED it off the [Applause] upright wow he was as good as it got in the Big 10 last year [Applause] that is one of those that I 99.9 he wears 99% of that sideline believe there is no chance he could possibly miss that gamewinners 50 plus yard winners EJ fle is looking at going that that is as big a gimme as you can ever ask for for one of the elite kickers but you know what is night Brown's writing down no gim is an opener ever well PJ Flex said look there's peace in it because you're going to know by the end of the game but there is anxiety in it because you don't know [Applause] yet still scoreless play action Hampton picks up the blitz for a moment Johnson lost the ball it's loose jante McMillan sprung it free for lindenburg let's see there is a marker [Applause] down prior to the fumble holding Defense number seven 10yd penalty from the previous spot automatic first down crushing from Minnesota not a very penalized team last year it's on 8 guby wow and once again these secondary players just making a difference on both ends of it unfortunately here seven is guby on the back end a terrific job by McMillan of beating the block but guby is beat right there and he just got to let go making a little contact but you can't hold on Hampton breaks off a cash and goes C Wheeling through the Minnesota Sky 15 yards a Dazz for omaran Hampton the allame and that's how the first 15 minutes of this season will end what was a bigger thud the field goal off the upright or Hampton hitting the ground a thing of beauty for Carolina's running back [Music] a caring man took a walk everywhere he looked people suffered anxiety ran High Hope dwindled hatred Rose his neighbors had lost trust in the system and in each other I need to do something he thought I'll bring them together and feed them around the dinner table they can talk and see how much they have in common shared struggles shared Joy shared pain so he prepared a feast and invited all into his home but some refused to sit at his table Flack you're first time seeing Max brosmer in game action how do you think he's settled in well he just got to be able to stay poised and calm in the pocket and uh he'll settle down as the game goes on uh we got to be able to help him out in the protection and the Run game as well DJ thank thank you some good amount what a big third and 17 on a little check down but then you come back and you throw at the feed and you miss a little high he will adjust that's what he says to everybody he will adjust and he'll adjust to the speed of this game after a long run from Omari on Hampton here's another one breaking tackles it's a first down again he led the nation in yards after contact last year he's doing it again yeah Cody Lindberg had a great conversation with us you're going to see the linebacker here when you come from the side you've got a wrap and you got to roll it's great to say it's really hard to execute so there's the wrap but there is no roll on top of it and he runs right through it over a th yards after contact as you said the best in college football a season to go and he shows you why he rolled but not the way he wanted to on that play a very talented linebacker lindenberg Johnson to throw snapping it off near side that's incomplete after some jockeying it's Ethan Robinson the transferred from Bucknell in the coverage this the third time where they've gotten JJ Jones into a situation where it is is well a couple of them were Zone droppers the last two have been just this it is one-on-one it is you good on good Ethan Robinson a transfer from Bucknell gets his hands on him my hands are on you maybe a little reach look I love that shot both are grabbing jerseys y don't call it let him [Applause] play second down seventh carry for Omari on Hampton and they go low that time Carri Brown swept the ankle third down secondary players are active on both sides tonight Carolina trying to get to the line this could be a double Cadence situation to keep the blitz slow down exactly what it is so you get to the line you don't let him sub and then you try to get that double Cadence to declare where is this coming from McMillan came sprinting to the line of the the near side third down and nine Johnson climbing the pocket rolling left Johnson sniffs the first down he's got it and then some what did m brown say he's a better Runner than you'd think sneaky 65 225 he was never a dual threat quarterback coming out of high school he's the son of Brad Johnson who was not known for his running but you've got to be able to do this to step into slide that's QB drills 101 I guarantee you Clyde Christensen who is working with the QBs now that is a drill you practice you dip your shoulder underneath that rush you step up not out not back step up into the pocket find the Escape valve and go run a great look at Clyde Christensen Tom Brady pyton Manning Super Bowls in Indie in Tampa and now back home as Alma is an ad eyes are coaching these quarterbacks second and eight pressure from the near side from Wally Johnson got a round that then he spins it back in play and there is a marker [Applause] down that was probably a pretty high-risk Choice kind of looked like the punt we saw in the first quarter Orthodox foul hands to the face Defense number 91 half the distance to the goal automatic first out it's on the Minnesota native Devon Easter and you know what he is sick and tired of messing around with that 5' 11 in guard that's getting underneath his pads and bothering him it's right here and Willie Lampton the Right Guard watch him he gets can't even see him but look at he is Underneath Him and because of it these defensive tackles get sick and tired of it that's why he was a State title winner in wrestling because he gets low and uses leverage first down and goal it's Hampton a little hesitation he runs right into Easter the pile still moving so Bryson nzid the first team all ACC tight end get in their late second and goal it is such an advantage n a little more known for his receiving but when you got a back like that and you know if you Dent the line of scrimmage at all and defensive coordinator Cory heatherman first year here in Minnesota Nosa too we had a lot of bodies there and the average back you stop for nothing the elite backs still push that pile for five NB been in motion short toss Hampton goes high and gets a couple of yards it'll be third down and goal lindenburg went underneath to cleave him down there's still four for Gophers one on four and he still somehow someway picks up 6 feet can't settle for field goals on the road you go on the road into an environment like this you've got to find a way to punch it in seventh pass of the night Johnson sees the pressure and Dives for the End Zone let's see it's very close touch now we'll see if it stands for now the first Carolina TouchDown for Max [Applause] Johnson touchdown not a body part hits once the tip of that football breaks the playe that front of that white goal line without I mean this is strength this is body control typically big lumbering guys fall down he doesn't he's got the strength to extend and Brad Johnson up in the stances That's my boy that's my boy I didn't run for many touchdowns I threw for mine but he can run it better me yeah the hand doesn't matter just so people watching know his hand went down he got into the End Zone it wasn't the elbow or the arm just the hand for Max Johnson that's the only way I know to find the end zone the transfer for Carolina gets [Music] in why always the couch does he need to go to Fox college football spot sponsored by All State you're in good hands with all state 7 nothing North Carolina on a touchdown run for the quarterback Max Johnson here's a good look once again at Clyde Christensen sitting there with him on the sidelines and a better look at Brad Johnson who I know like many that played in the 80s and 90s 2000s so much of college football is unrecognizable he's gone from LSU gear to A&M gear now Carolina gear you used to develop he played for Bowen all those years at Florida State but it's it's a different game and you've got to maximize your opportunity in a transactional sport your opportunity is now two big time runs from his son on that drive Max is sixth rushing touchdown in college Brad had 10 in his entire College in NFL career but he did run for 10 yards in the Super Bowl on one carry this week big noon Saturday kicks off a huge season opener between eighth ranked Penn State and West Virginia with the big noon kickoff through coming to you live from rockus morgant town don't miss the most watched game window in college football beginning Saturday on Fox you've been to Morgantown I have an opener in Morgantown have not it's going to be insane they've been waiting how long to play college football started tailgating August 1st that might be a little conservative Neil Brown had them playing very well last year that could be an interesting game early on in the college football playoff discussions as Max brosmer has the ball again and he will hand it off to Major for just a handful of yards his eth car heard from PJ Fleck with Allison we got to help Max rosmer yes he's a six-year veteran yes he's played a ton of ball but we've got to get the Run game going we've got to get the play action game going I think any any quarterback no matter how much time you played you want gimes you want to get getting Rhythm there has not been much in rhythm in this passing game there's been some check downs but you'd certainly like to see some of the Rhythm we watched it practice yesterday where that ball did not hit the ground we saw the confidence start to grow on the drive that nearly ended in the field goal they couldn't pay it off with points though on second and seven Carolina brings four and gets there and brosmer goes down Amari Campbell got in there is that Cedric gray or was that Amari cell cuz he looked like the guy that did it for a lot of years and if you're watching Cedric you made it to the show he's got a club on his hand he's battled a hand injury all camp but I highlighted Quinn Carroll earlier in the Run game of pushing people but he gets the big man moving he gets him right he gets him left he runs right by him and he sets up a third and extra long Mari Campbell just got himself a birthday present it's his birthday today as it's thir third and 11 for his [Applause] defense five coming this time rosmer has to climb and down he goes one more time he ran right into ritzy again it's a loss of two I know they said he saw everything over 5 Years in New Hampshire but what you've not seen is this chaos from Jeff Collins he's mixing blitzes this is an odd front right just one guy down over the center tells you it's an odd front three man fronts and then then you've got twists you've got stunts you've got people coming from every direction number 42 y Line's having a hard time identifying in the veteran quarterback is seeing a blur of Carolina right now they created a third three and out for Minnesota and Carolina gets the ball out of halime by the way returnable punt ritzy H he to the outside and there is a marker coming down he gets to the 44 and let's see there is a flag on the near side there's a flag on the far side as Elijah huzzy got into Minnesota territory well there was a gopher blowing sideways and that tells you it's a block in the back I think it was DeAndre boyin possibly the first one you just got a shield and it's hard for these guys they've been waiting to hit people it was a fierce block but it's one that you've just got to puts your body in front don't look for that knockout shot because it's going to going to move Carolina back that's Deonte McMillan who is down and injured for Minnesota as they discuss the marker McMillan who's been around the block in college football four years at TCU they're talking to m brown about the markers he doesn't like whatever was just told to him see the tape and he'll see exactly what you're going to see in just a second and the way those guys fall is a pretty good indicator for these officials as well and they fall forward on that block pretty simple call now the other conversation's about the penalty further down the field and first game right I got to go hit somebody get a chance in the team's phase of things to show what I can do and be physical the most physical Camp Max's had in Carolina the most tackling the most scrimmaging there are two fouls on the play one in each team illegal formation kicking team personal foul illegal Blindside block receiving team North Carolina has chosen to offset those fouls and we will re kick [Applause] because they are different yardage different types of fouls Carolina their first warning of the game so an illegal formation by Minnesota you're going to see the the block come right here once again just watch how that Defender Falls Anytime they fall forward like that it is a clear indicator right in order to fall forward I've gotten hit right in the back Mike Pereira Mike perea for the first time in 2024 am I right welome back Mike Pereira boy it's good to be back but I'd hate to figure this penalty out this is one with a foul by each team actually North Carolina got the option they could keep the ball but they would then be penalized from the 38 yd line for their blinds side block so mck chose the other option which was to offset them and then force a res you look good you look good for 2024 Mike Pete thank you from a wedding to the command center huzzy back to receive again and Elijah huzzy will watch this go out of bounds good choice by Carolina by the 73y old guy he's seen a little bit of football Javari ritzy Mike's thing Fox college football is SP Ed by T-Mobile America's largest 5G Network and by Jersey Mike Subs he a sub above PJ Fleck the Minnesota head coach refers to ma Brown as a sneaky Mentor when Ma Brown finished his first season in his first stins at Carolina PJ Fleck was eight but then PJ when he was trying to get into coaching sent a note to everybody he could send it to through his coach at Northern Illinois when he was a wide receiver Joe Novak and there is the response to Joe Novak from ma Brown they have been friends since and they are now on the sidelines against one another and M said look it's no fun coaching against friends but you got to do it I would argue there is no other coach in all of college football that others seek wisdom from more than m brown and he gives it he got that servant heart to just share all of his 50 years nearly of coaching with others he's getting texts from Matthew MCC and M famous people and a very giving Soul his quarterback Max Johnson hops into a throw it's short and intercepted just Wally down the sideline for the goers he's still going Wally tiptoeing inside the 10 what a run you know Jason I was just about to say you've got to find a way to get nebet the ball the most trustworthy guy on the other end of it for Max Johnson during Camp they try to go to the tight end the problem is you've got an elite 4year starting corner right on that tight end in a 50/50 ball a little bit behind nesbet Falls right into the hands of wall and unlike Robinson earlier or Brian earlier that saw a ball go through his hands this stud uh-uh this senior uh-uh time is now and what a play to flip the momentum and emotion in this building his sixth interception the last four years it comes off of Max Johnson and now Minnesota tries to punch it in play action rosmer throws it driver is stopped the tight end position has been so important to them in situations like this in the recent past and they don't have that mismatch maker so you try to create it with play action and horizontal and a terrific job by huzzy coming all the way across the field to tackle Donald Driver boy the Penn State transfer Christian driver there usually that sneak concept that corner gets caught up across the field uh-uh excellent play what you doing [Music] it's a hand off it's Major's first go for [Applause] Touchdown well Jason this is pretty good for the Big Fellas up front there is a load of experience over here you watch Carol get beat in the passing game but time he mauls the defender to create the hole and Greg Johnson they love this kid the true sophomore thrown in the fires a freshman a year ago said no problem I'll slide over to Center and I'll get a body on a body Marcus major he knows how to do that we see that from this program so often Mohamed Ibraham remember the great Marian Barber thei and Lawrence that two-headed monster when they were together it kind of always looks the same yeah because we don't screw around we come right at you we develop we grow our guys from freshman to fifth and sixth year seniors defense lining up over the center that penalty is declined the extra point is good and then when you know thyself guess what in the transfer portal you can go and get exactly what you need a carbon copy of those physical guys but all started right here with the senior wall four years he's been doing this in Minnesota turned the fortunes in this building and major turned it into [Applause] six and Doug and if we win we get to tell you how Liberty Mutual customizes car insurance so you only pay for what you need basic guys September 8th on Fox coming up on the safe Farm halftime Colorado already on upset alert year two under coach Prime while 12th ranked Utah makes his opening statement as a big 12 member and number 11 Missouri looks to build off its best season in a decade speaking of the best back to two of the best Jason and Brock we'll see you at the half fellas two of the best thank you Mike appreciate it he's edging it's week one you never know what we're going to provide over the course of the season love you Mike Hill thank you uh of note to Carolina fans NC State is kind of in it with Western Carolina right now in a onore game as well but it's nice to be back in college football where shirts are optional it's nice to know they're still doing St it was done in the '90s didn't know they had like that still to shake those keys around key plays you're were talking about the gold towels they had it's got a little Terrible Towel feel as well okay so max Johnson two for seven so far couple of turnovers what do you need to see BR you got to flush that last one he won this job because of his ability to take care of the ball went back and looked at all his 22 starts Jason only one time and that's the SEC did he throw two interceptions so typically he limits the damage but I'd say both quarterbacks there's not much Rhythm two seven 10 yards right those were just kind of short little one-on-one routes you'd like to see I know both of these veteran quarterbacks would like to see some high completion easy gimme throws hard to find him versus these defenses so far tonight Mar on Hampton's been the Bell C this is carry number 11 into Cory Heather's defense and for more on him here's Allison yeah and that defense really Shifting the momentum in this game but throughout it first year defensive coordinator Cory heatherman has been telling his guys we are fine the times they move the ball it's because we hurt ourselves losing contain and with penalties just focus on your tackl having good pad levels staying low be violent and continue to go through people got a defensive holding negated the fumble for Johnson earlier in the ball game as it's second down and eight and this one to the near side is dropped incomplete to set up third down it's off the hand of JJ Jones so JJ had the beautiful Jumpman catch on the first third down then he falls down and that's one sure you'd like to see on the front shoulder but you got to help the quarterback out Max knows that that's one of those high percentage throws that looks right there says that didn't happen the last two weeks of King but because it did now I got to deal with third and eight you set it off the top PS are on the truth will be told third and eight Here Comes Joiner got a hand on Johnson who breaks it down and goes down Danny stgo helped out to create the go for sack yeah John copenhaver the tight end is going to do exactly what they talked about for their big tackle he's going to try to chip on the outside there with J joer here's the problem with chipping Jason if you don't chip right you actually can really hamper your offensive tackle and that time Howard Samson was expecting to chip one way but the momentum pushed him inside and gives Joiner the opportunity to get to the QB what is chipping right there that is that tight end or running back helping that tackle chipping trying to throw a shoulder so that guy can't get started but that shoulder led to momentum for jointer to get home reading back to return from the 30 we'll get 40 yards and that is it Saturday baseball night in America on Fox the Braves take on NL East rival Bryce Harper and the Phillies still a race in the NL East and the Brewers with their big lead in the NL Central taking on one of the most electrifying players in Major League Baseball Ellie De La Cruz start Saturday night 7 Eastern on Fox check the local listings for the game in your area I'll be honest sometimes you don't know what you don't know I really felt like this was going to be an unbelievably compelling close game yeah I didn't know if offenses in these veteran QBs might make more plays I think we're feeling these defenses on both sides are playing downhill and aggressively and there is a reason that those guys in the desert have this as a very very close game it's a blowout last year Carolina put up 31 points behind 414 in the air from Drake [Applause] May Minnesota leaves the dock from the 35 a long ride there and finally a handoff to Major for a gain of three so Minnesota averaged under 21 points a game last year for the first time in 12 seasons and when they were rolling in 2019 they got to that Outback B they were very efficient offensively they threw it to run it they were an RPO team that was Tanner Morgan that was spraying it everywhere and yet their identity Jason as you said earlier like doesn't matter who it is like huge offensive linemen that just move the line of scrimmage and their efficiency for PJ Fleck was off the charts but the last couple years have been a far cry from that second and seven driver in the back field rosmer looks him off it's a little bit high but he's got it to the tight end caller up and it'll be third down coming up caller up in his sixth season with the goer what do you like third and one I like pushing that pile and there you see Greg Harbo right in the middle of it and he was brutally honest like those numbers you just put up I heard it at the gas station I heard it at the grocery store I heard it I know that if you don't produce I know what this business is about got to be a lot more effective in third and on a good way of doing it low snap major does make the first down out of [Applause] it nice job by brosmer here he has played so much football is not going to freak out with that low snap and once again it is just big people on the time of possession that's the one thing here that's jumping out a little bit Minnesota is grinding that is their game we're going to grind and we're going to grind But ultimately need some big plays to follow him what an opportunity between the 40s here look V QB if you want to take a shot rosmer the transfer from New Hampshire with a hand off to Major and he gets sideswiped stick Lane turned himself into a missile these safeties on both sides are not afraid to come downhill and once again that that's a little bit of an indicator to Greg Harbaugh oh you want to be this active you're going to pull the trigger that fast to split a double team you're going to pull the trigger that fast to make the tackle at three yards then you've got to ride that make that fake and throw it over their head Harbo who grew up in Raleigh and refers to North Carolina as quote Chapel Hill because of his history as a young in North Carolina rosmer play action over the top got it first down Daniel Jackson was open in bracket cover that is a a nice job a a deep outcut that is not an easy throw that's a high degree of difficulty but you see the play action you see brosmer do an excellent job of getting the feet set and then all the way across the field the Deep out there between corner and safety and one of those chunk plays that this offense which is built to run is going to be able to run then do that get those Chunk in explosive plays eventually points will follow it's their longest play of the game so far at 20 for the goers that was an extraordinary number nearly 50% of the re receiving yards a season ago off the spin major strong effort second [Applause] down Darius Taylor saying yeah he should be High toes but he's battle a little bit of injury in Camp a broken tackle a little bit of a spin cycle there we talk a lot of talk right lot of talk yeah and PJ said this guy is this guy's special now quick note you're not watching an NFL game there is a two-minute timeout in each half in college football do you feel enriched love it something new happen not a warning oh it's not a warning a stop touchdown yeah and if you didn't bundle your home in auto insurance all this this could to be tough to tackle so get All State and be better protected from Mayhem like me Fox college football is sponsored by All State you're in good hands a majestic scene pregame the parachuters from way above Landing in inclement but safe weather how do they do that I don't know well we know how they do that simam was happening and Brock said during the break I want to do that with benetti at some point at some point this year yeah well benetti said no second down for the Gophers and Markus major in the back field driver in motion they'll hand it to Major Straight Ahead got hand on there is a marker down he's inside the five and high stepping out of bounds we'll see if it stands fireworks went off in the end zone we'll see how app able they were after the [Applause] penalty offside Defense number four that deine first and 10 first and goal Minnesota gain a 19 stance well we talked about this o line doing a nice job of just targeting not in an illegal way you target those blocks look at the body on a body look at the big left guard Tyler Cooper six-year player as well getting to that second level remember the first couple drives Jason and you saw the blur of Carolina in that back field they were punching the line of scrimage these last couple drives you felt the wave of the girth of this offensive line for Minnesota a major putting his pads down and running right behind him 35 games playing at home at Oklahoma now a transfer to Minnesota he's in the back field first and goal he'll carry it again off the head hesitation he's stacked up he drives the ls and he's just short of the goal line second and goal will Carolina use a timeout [Applause] here it's a good question they get the ball to begin the second half Jason I I don't know how much trust they have in their offense right now but what look at look at body on a body body on a body and if it weren't for the power in echo's lower half in the strength as those two Brahma bows took on each other that was going to be another touch down for [Applause] Marcus that was Major [Applause] power second and goal Straight Ahead rosmer dips the shoulder they'll unpack it where is he is the question in the end zone [Applause] caller up the tight end former tackle in high school pushed him in that was just a straight rugby match right there bro and brosmer told us yesterday he loves this team he's been here since December but when we pressed him like why why do you like these guys so much you know what's striking me over the course of this first half because when you've got a team that is built by offensive linemen you tend to love your teammates and football team yeah it's yeah big guys right caller right there he's 270 pound tied end there's just like no nonsense like these guys sacrifice lineman sacrifice this is a sacrificial program and brosmer love him being a part of it he doesn't like that as much so he said the one thing he was excited about was to see his teammates Expressions when they were in the end zone he scored that touchdown but he was the leader for a trip for team bonding Allison he knew he had to do everything everything he could to build chemistry with this team quickly and maximize his one year here in Minnesota so in may he took a dozen of the Gophers down to his home in Georgia for a Mock Retreat and yes there were workouts and routes run and all that football stuff but these were the best times the most memorable times out on the lake Max's favorite spot playing cards the guitar a trip to the Braves game where he gave his uh teammates custom jerseys with their names on it and he told us it just gave us a chance to learn about each other show them where I'm from and build that chemistry connection you can't always see but is definitely tangible yeah Allison that's the maturity of a guy that's been around the block it wasn't really recruited out of high school had to do it for 5 years at the FCS level and I call it connective tissue Tom Brady will be on the calls with Fox he calls it being endearing endearing you want your teammates to be around you I love the way that Tom frames that and this guy's got his teammates not just because of a lead to today wow almost up for that in his field go so he's got his teammates fully behind his his back which leads us to our Pacific Life game summary sponsored by Pacific Life creating Financial Security for nearly 100 and 60 years this is one of the 10,000 lakes flash ah here's how it's happened so far major big debut as a go for 73 yards in a touchdown 22 runs no surprise nope and remember nuban a year ago filling in for Taylor pounded it to 40 times in Michigan State so Major's on his way carrying it over 30 no problem for Max Johnson this passing game for Carolina it is out of rhythm and it is out of whack how do you call it with three timeouts in the ball back we'll see Johnson over the middle got an easy one for a first down it's JJ Jones you all the time in the world and with those three timeouts in your back pocket clock stops every first down so you play fast but not in a hurry Johnson another throw that's to the sideline it's caught once again that's Nate McCollum who had the big day last year and there is a marker down the crowd reacts in a very favorable [Applause] way pass interference offense number seven 15 yd Pi it be first down the side swipe from Hamilton the freshman yeah that's Hamilton going down the field and blocking right here with the ball thrown down the field that is a that's just a no no before it's caught he must be anticipating that that ball is going to be coming he can't do that that is just a a young player a red shirt freshman a lot of young pups Uber talented guys now four stars Big Time recruits huge production out of high school and again that's a that's an effort I'm trying to do the right thing I'm trying to block that is look how enormous That Swing of real estate is how can you even make the argument to use those three timeouts we'll see what this play does North Carolina gets it out of halftime pocket breaks down Johnson goes down Anthony Smith now they might just let it roll I think you do and this is one of the areas in Minnesota felt good about this that that's Howard Samson and if he looks big time out North Carolina he is big he's 68 15 lb but those feet are not the most Nimble they tried to Chip and give him some help earlier on an open Edge it is Advantage Joiner Advantage Smith Advantage Edge rushers for these Gophers you better be careful if you're Carolina with that timeout if this next play is an incompletion yep Minnesota can get the ball back I would agree with that so you better find a completion or run it but or find a way to get Hampton the B because he has been damaging with the ball in his hands Mar on Hampton 11 carries 55 yards he has not scored yet he's a returning All-American who had over 1,500 yards last year 1500 15 touchdowns it was him and olly Gordon down in Stillwater that did that at this level 22 yd difference on that offensive pass interference and you can just see how it took the starch out of this drive we've got to get to the 48 to short of Midfield Johnson will scoop it for Hampton and let him run for a while lindenberg spikes him down Cody lindenberg who has a joker tattoo on his arm just created some Havoc that's a nice job of not having a horse caller tackle as well because it have been really easy for guys you see how he attacked the shoulder he knew exactly where to approach that tackle if he approached it with the name plate may have had a penalty and kept this drive alive here's a local product from Anoka nearby gin Ramsey went to high school in Anoka and he's got the state fired up this defense has allowed 28 pass yards 147 Minnesota at halime now Mike Hill Emanuel AO and Chris Peterson have the State Farm halftime show in Los Angeles guys yeah welcome to Los Angeles and the State Farm halftime show taking you from there down to here uh maybe his first game Jitters but not the best offensive display we could say in the first half of this game but it was Minnesota's uh defense that led to its first score and kind of sparked this offense as we take a look at State Farm halftime highlights coach yeah little bit stale first half until we got our man Justin Wally got that pick little pressure on on Johnson here and awesome this was the offense that they had all first half Justin Wally 70 yard return sets up Marcus major for the 5 yard score and then and then they get another score right after this they kind of like sparked them they had a nine-play drive it's first time that you see Minnesota throwing the ball downfield at the 20- yard completion to Dan Daniel Jackson I'd like to see a little more of that AO you're exactly right what I was thinking watching the first half is the players are now realizing the severity of every decision that Max Johnson interception in practice all the last three weeks of Camp as soon as it gets picked coach blows a whistle offense back on the ball not in a game now that interception leads to Minnesota having the ball and going down and getting points these players Zer body is currently still trying to figure out wait this is the real deal the real game every decision matters I think in the second half we'll see a lot cleaner football life without Drake May for North Carolina Max Johnson 410 28 yards passing in the first half second half coming up moment here hey meanwhile coach Prime hey he's going talk to college football last year tonight Colorado already on upset alert early on kador Sanders who's looking like a hosman something like a shot at the Heisman to keep these stars coming back [Applause] again and what could ever lead to the post Nick era in Tuscaloosa what could inspire a year two turnaround for Coach Prime back you're wondering is Texas officially back back here where the new age of realignment begins I love college football so beautiful welcome back welcome back welcome [Music] backc back uh horse Shack Vinnie Barberino I am Freddy Boom Boom Washington welcome back uh change seems to be the big story line going into this 2024 season new college football playoffs new faces and new places uh we got replac Legends at Michigan and Alabama but give your most intriguing storyline going into the season for me it's simple it's the new faces and the new places I think about USC Oregon Oklahoma Texas a coach of mine always said will you be a thermostat or a thermometer will USC adjust to the climate of the Big 10 or will they make the big 10 adjust to their climate simply put will USC we have to figure out how are we going to stop the two back game how are we going to stop counters Powers Zone scheme runs or are they going to force Iowa are they going to force michigans Wisconsin to figure out how are yall going to deal with the spread Tempo no huddle how are y'all going to deal with that man on your screen right there Don and that one on his jersey how are you going to deal with Miller mosque will they be a thermostat or a thermometer like it for me I like this new 12 team playoff it's been 10 years I can't believe it's taking us this long I think there's going to be so much more fan interest throughout the season and in the postseason it's going to be so much longer the first four uh highest rate conference Champs to get buys me as a coach I'd get my right arm to get a buy to rest my team to game plan for two weeks I think the next 5 through eight home playoff yeah that's big those campuses are going to go nuts it's big and then you know 9 through 12 the next the next four there's probably going to be four more so there's going to be eight teams debating probably for those last spots it's going to make college football even that more intriguing as you mentioned still going to be some pressure on the college football committee to get it right once again and the thing about it is you can lose two games and still be in it right and years past that was not the case hey season two under coach Prime is officially under the way and uh shador Sanders is doing everything he can to overcome a tough North Dakota State team Marcus major making it into can't wait for this one to get kicked off it's a marquee game it's an opportunity for us to really put a stamp early in the year about West Virginia football and what our team looks like Morgantown West Virginia it's a tough place I mean it's a hornet nest they love their team it'll be a great environment a great challenge their quarterback played really well late in the year to pass tons of time in zone C they they're super super talented and they have a really good Edge rusher on number 11 ABD Carter he's one of the best in the stay consistent and staying who you are it's going to be our biggest [Applause] strength it's going to be special klege sh back what a way to start the college football season on [Applause] Fox they say down south it should be a good in Saturday big noon kickoff returns as the crew heads to morgant toown and get you ready for eighth rank Pinn State West Virginia coverage begins at 10 Eastern on Fox back here in studio hey Colorado jump from one win to four wins last year with Deion Sanders taking over the program and now in year two under coach Prime All Odds once again on the buffalos this season taking on North Dakota State remember they lost six straight the end the season after that three and 0 star see what they got they still got these two guys J Sanders Travis H what you want to see here is Travis Hunter's acceleration after that quick hitch and that cat Turning Away running away from the safety phenomenal play right there by that offense I don't think Hunter Mr the plays playing defense as well as you know and shador also has a weapon in Jimmy horn Jr that is some good looking football by shador and Jimmy Jimmy horn there I'll tell you what we know Colorado's got receivers and a really good quarterback 433 yards already for shador three touchdowns but uh the defense still suspect in the first half no doubt about it uh North Dakota State they scored on four of their first five offensive possessions two touchdowns two field goals in the first half that's why Colorado Trail but you know what as long as you out score them Sanders Hunter once again Hunter 129 receiving yards two touchdowns in this game up threatening again Southern Utah Utah the's back cam Rising how about this I did Cam Rising Signing Day in 2018 to the university 2018 and here we are in 2024 and he's still out there throwing touchdown passes yeah missed all of last season with a knee injury back five TDS already in this game through first half 35 nothing Utah Rolling Kansas as long as they got George Brett in the tance Jaylen D got to keep him healthy too if they do these guys are going to make some noise he can run and we know can throw and they're rolling over L where is Lyon wood Aro uh it's back there in the you know what I'm saying back right next to they're getting but behind the wooded right now that's what's happening right now let's go back to Colorado man shador Sanders look the offense is incredible shador Sanders already 4 33 passing yards in this game yeah but that's not who I think of I think of Coach Prime Colorado is relevant last year and this year because of him they're not relevant as a football team yet they got some really good skill players if they get that defense going a little bit being able to stop the run the o line protect protect shador a little bit better then they're going to get relevant you're exactly right Mike you said something earlier in the Green Room want to bring it to National Television I don't think Colorado can fix its defense this year that's not something you can do starting now what you can do is focus on turning the ball over when you have a highly explosive offense if your defense is suspect so long as you force turnovers you can still find a way to win games cuz you can get your offense more possessions I don't believe that Colorado's defense is going to become a staunch at stopping the run I don't think all of a sudden they're going to fit the Run gaps a lot better but what they can do rather than getting sacks get Force fumbles rather than getting tips get interceptions fix the defense as it pertains to turnovers and that'll help the offense out they have settled down a little bit in the second half defense doubt so you know these first games working out the Kinks the next week is going to be very interesting against Nebraska of course there always a big robry they were down actually 20 to 17 at the half they scored seven points to take the lead there inside the 5 yd line right now Colorado threatening see what happens and that one third and goal there hey 24 to 20 Max Johnson uh he's got a turn over in his game but he's also got this running touchdown his dad was happy in the stands his team down seven second half coming up so it's going to come down to this can they do it [Applause] oh no they missed it wait a minute there's a flag on the [Applause] plan 126 first on the scene CL gas think of this as a poison cloud of death it's heading your direction I won't leave you behind fall back 126 copy 911 lonar Premier September 23rd on Fox picture this you're binging your favorite show and your sofa has it all heated it [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] time now for our first half check-in sponsored by All State you're in good hands with all state well the answer my friend wasn't blowing in the wind necessarily but it was not picturesque in the rain so far in in half number one here in Minneapolis 14-7 not a ton of offense and time now Brock hu for Next Level moments sponsored by AT&T business reliability for your business is our business well they love to call Jeff Collins the defensive coordinator the minister of Mayhem and that's exactly what Max brosmer was feeling in that first quarter Mayhem three sacks look at all the Carolina blue arrows they're coming at you from Every Which Way stick and move and just in the face of rosmer creating some of that chaos but the big play was this one up seven was Carolina and Minnesota said hey hold on a second we play defense two and Wally here with the enormous interception a four-year starter that wasn't just satisfied with getting the pick that flipped the field and just uh Jason what it really allowed them to do was like a heavyweight getting the guy in the corner and just pounding on you right that was a middleweight that was dodging and sticking and punching and making all the plays but that flipped it and allowed just the heavyweight to start to Lean Into You touchdown touchdown Marcus major pound in the football and just stylistically the second quarter all Minnesota so if you're North Carolina second half you get the ball first what can you do what should you do I think you got to continue to feed Hampton he has been your best player I told you yesterday and told the crew that the best player in this building tonight is Omarian Hampton and you've got to find ways they ran a little a little scoop shovel screen there on that final drive but I wouldn't mind a crack screen I wouldn't mind a gap screen I wouldn't mind obviously running the football as well but your best player's got to be a factor in the second half mum on the return and he's not going to that very far at all it's a swarm of gold including Kingsbury downstairs Allison we have to wake up on offense that was M Brown's message to me at the half he said we have a lot of inexperienced guys out there and they're playing up tight all of them so that's a concern he knows his tackles are getting beat and he's going to continue to try and help them and chip but a lot of it is also on the quarterback he said he has to move we need to use some this direction and get the ball out a little bit quicker really he feels the turnover has been the differences in this game and he did tell us before that Conor Harold could play a quarterback if things didn't go well he said I'm not ready to make that change now but if things don't change offensively we will we shall see that's a high snap to start him off and it is Hampton look two teams all of last year had a top 20 rush and pass offense LSU and North Carolina they're not used to this no this is not stylistically what they like to do they've been Tempo they've been spread they've been RPO but this is some of what m brown told us we've got to be more compliment I've got to protect my defense and the pounding they took in the second quarter the seven minutes down in time of possession this is a big Drive Omar on Hampton's second straight touch and Minnesota collapses on it down he goes Danny sto once again well just a Nifty little stunt at the point of attack watch this watch the two Gophers Go in different directions and some of that inexperience a true freshman left guard Howard Samson the big tackle making his first start you know what you do against inexperience move people change the picture pre and post Snap Minnesota Savvy and Veteran to do so the former wrestling state champ in this state Trigo with a tackle third down Johnson with a pocket Far Side Long throw to the sideline and that is Bryson nbit with a beautiful grab how'd he do it and he had Justin wall in his Hip Pocket these two tangled earlier on that interception this time nesbet has ball he's got two feet down he controls through contact you know what you call that good on good he didn't start football until the summer before his junior year of high school now he's a first team all ACC tight end and you see that with Pops that plays 11 years in the NFL like his does on a hand off Hampton and a big Collision down there that was Maverick baronowski and he my friends uhhuh Bowski is all neck Team all neck team look at the size of his neck okay what part should I focus on the width it's like a cobra and they strike you you can see it in these bio pictures man linebackers whose necks like go outside of their helmet that's a cobra ready to pounce yes second down that's a run for Hampton and he thrusts forward for about third and one and a half that's why I answer you are in football mode this has been a very physical game so far here we go right to the line of scrimmage again limiting the substitution and the amount of pressure you may see a lot of conversation Minnesota hopping into the defense Hampton broke a tackle somehow lindenberg met him and Hampton just rammed him listen to this well Jason I don't know if that was head-on I don't know if that was a side tackle lindenberg said head-on fite the ball side tackle rap and roll that was just hanging on for dear life and unable to stop a train hton out Darwin Barlo in the transfer from USC has his first catch and he's near Midfield you know how hard that is to do by the way tackle Omari on Hampton Well that and break that tackle on both sides of it I mean they love lindenberg and Lindberg said it hey man when you're seeing this guy tomorrow what's the key and this has been the fundamentals Tau bite the ball when he's coming right at you wrap and roll and then sweep the ankle and really none of it's effective it's like trying to hit one of these Elite pitchers in baseball like good luck like that's what you want to do that's the play but to execute it brutally difficult second down throw it's a quick slant and it's caught once again the tight end Nesbit this is good I mean this is Chip Lindsay he's been doing it a while at offensive coordinator as well been highly productive andar excuse me nzb here here right on the quick little slam get your best player is the ball I said to you coming out like get Hampton the ball he's your best player your second best player is Bryson NB and there you see chip Lindsay right up here a veteran staff cly Christensen I talked about being a real great sounding board as an analyst and QB coach but Chip's done it a long time in a lot of places and he's made a good living doing it because he typically maximizes the strengths of his best players he's got Hampton back in after a couple of touches from Barlo Johson wants to dump it off it's a screen it's the tight end it's his brother Jake Johnson and it sets up about a yard to get but how about this brother to brother Max to Jake Johnson how cool is that you do it in the backyard growing up and once again you get to A hurried situation here on Third and one picking up the tempo Marion Hampton Straight Ahead that is a gimme in Gulf and M Brown says about this kid Omar on Hampton he's like the most even keeed person you could possibly imagine Which flies in the face of him flying in the face of Defenders all he does work look at the pellets up and down his arm on a hot sticky night in Minnesota yeah he's going to take hunting in Bank Stadium home with it it's a toss to mum on the end of round and he'll get n and a [Applause] half this is a textbook drive on adjustments you heard m brown tell Allison we're just stuck we're not moving the ball we're not efficient and look at the different ways the different touches the different right at you horizontal movements creativity flip it out wide that's a quick hit to Hamilton he broke one tackle to the 15 right I mean look at the look at the spray chart on this drive this is how you put a defense that was dictating to you back on their heels as we got to go for down they had two guys with a catch in the whole first half there are now six Tar Heels with a reception look at those gopher sucking wind there is a lot of huffing and puffing cuz Carolina's finally got that engine started Lucas finnessy is the one down the all state Max Johnson is spearheaded a 13pl drive for North Carolina exactly what the doctor ordered a veteran staff a veteran head coach they were not going to sit and be a Target longest drive of the first half nine plays 13 on this one as you said Johnson a keeper and he has stood up just stonewald and driven back for a loss on the play Danny stgo one more time pretty good discipline by the veteran stgo and his buddy Devin Williams was right behind him that's really hard to do when they have fed you the Beast right up the middle of it you just want to cheat you want to cheat but that is uh textbook sound Gap assignment defense H short toss and he goes horizontal twice stolski got him first Robinson closed the deal that's that's how you bring this guy now it's the only chance you have against the best yard after contact back in America a season ago one guy can't do it but as you said stoki gets him to stop his feet and when he is stopped e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e e
