reports kamla Harris Nails her presidential debate debut rattling Donald Trump with calculated takedowns Donald Trump was fired by 81 million people so let's be clear about that and clearly he is having a very difficult time processing that world leaders are laughing at Donald Trump I have talked with military leaders some of whom worked with you and they say you're a disgrace and what you will also notice is that people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom in Springfield they're eating the dogs the people that came in they're eating the cats they're eating they're eating the pets of the people that live there followed just minutes later with a huge endorsement from the biggest crossover celebrity Taylor Swift signing off as a childless cat lady the first and possibly only debate highlighted included Harris on women 's reproductive Health one does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree the government and Donald Trump certainly should not be telling a woman what to do with her body the former president lashing out at the Democrats I probably took a bullet to the head because of the things that they say about me they talk about democracy I'm a threat to democracy they're the threat to democracy and heading to the spin room to do his own post- debate cleanup did she upset you when she talked about the crowds when she told have the biggest crowds that anyone's everever had her Crowds Are fake and today at Ground Zero a moment of Civility from both sides with the candidates shaking hands as America honors the thousands lost on 9/11 later this hour we will be live in Shanksville Pennsylvania where President Biden will participate in a refling ceremony good day everyone the day after I'm Andrea Mitchell in Washington vice president kamla Harris taking charge from the moment she walked out on that debate stage catching Donald Trump off guard by walking towards him with an outstretched hand their first face to face since he had refused to attend the Biden Harris inaugural in 2017 her campaign saying she planned it excuse me in 2021 her campaign saying that she planned it all to put him on defense and then bait him into going off message people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom and I will tell you the one thing you will not hear him talk about is you you will not hear him talk about your needs your dreams and your and your desires people don't leave my rallies we have the biggest rallies the most incredible rallies in the history of politics that's because people want to take their country back world leaders are laughing at Donald Trump Victor Orban said it he said the most respected most feared person is Donald Trump we had no problems when Trump was President it is very well known that Donald Trump is weak and wrong on National Security and foreign policy it is well known that he admires dictators wants to be a dictator on day one according to himself and it is absolutely welln that these dictators and autocrats are rooting for you to be president again because they're so clear they can manipulate you with flattery and favors one Trump Ally telling NBC News the former president lost his cool and ended up repeating that baseless conspiracy theory about Haitian migrants eating pets in Ohio Trump is now calling the debate gged attacking the moderators by saying it was three against one and walking back the possibility of showing up for a second debate and in a rare move after the debate Trump personally came to the spin room to defend his own performance telling me it was a great night I think ABC is the worst but despite that you know it was a great evening among Harris surrogates on the floor last night swing state North Carolina governor Roy Cooper it was exciting to see how she took every single issue threw it back on him and showed what was good for the American people do you think do you think that he scored points on the economy or an immigration against he has no plan uh he has no plan and that was pretty clear after the debate Harris reminding supporters at a watch party that their work is just beginning in a race that is still tied okay today was a good day we got to work tomorrow we got 56 days to go we got a lot of work to do guys we're still the underdogs in this race it's tight we have got to win Pennsylvania and we are going to win Pennsylvania we begin with NBC News White House correspondent Monica Alba NBC's Chief political analyst Chuck Todd NBC correspondent Garrett hake who was following the Trump campaign and Washington Post National editor Phil Rucker so Monica Harris expertly used the split screen last night something that Joe Biden did not do memorably in that first debate to show her reactions because the format was not necessarily going to give her a chance to either fact check at length or rebut him how is the campaign feeling today especially with that big endorsement from Taylor Swift they're pretty pleased Andrea I have to tell you they feel like that preparation which was extensive paid off that the vice president took this really seriously that she did study everything that Donald Trump had said rhetorically in the past many years not just on the debate stage but beyond that she had gotten some input from people like Hillary Clinton about using that strategy to try and bait him because she was thinking that maybe he was going to try to bait her that had been something heading into the debate that they were also readying for but instead she was the one who really did that first and we saw in several examples several exchanges that were really key from the debate last night that's exactly what she was able to do successfully so in terms of the people I spoke with last night and this morning they were very happy with those results they also feel like some of these larger answers on abortion reproductive freedom on January 6th that some of these things that she had been talking about at times in terms of how she wanted to prosecute the case against Donald Trump they felt like those were some breakthrough moments she was able to do in l in a minute for instance so they're very happy with how that all went last night and then I'm told according to campaign officials they were not in the loop on the fact that Taylor Swift was going to post that endorsement on Instagram so when that happened just moments after she had wrapped up what they viewed as a successful evening they felt like that punctuated what they're calling a decisive Victory and only adds to her momentum and they believe her ability to attract support from if you look at the last week or so everybody from one of the world's biggest pop stars to former vice president Republican Dick Cheney Liz Cheney and they're trying to say now she can also in terms of some of those moments last night on the debate stage perhaps appeal to everybody in between who had had questions about her record who had wondered whether she was going to detail some of these policies and proposals there are still some things she definitely sidestepped and didn't get into in as much granularity as voters want to see and the campaign is aware of that but now they feel like the pressure is off a little bit and she can start to do that and maybe she'll do more media interviews which is something else they know they've been under the gun to do Andrea and Garrett so Donald Trump you talked to him also in the spin room uh he landed some blows last night especially when he turned Harris's own words from past debates against her she was big on defund the police in Minnesota she went out wait a minute I'm talking now if you don't mind please does that sound familiar but Garrett last night she also missed an opportunity I mean Donald Trump L missed several opportunities to focus on his issues yeah IM immigration the economy and you know using Victor Orban the Hungarian dictator to try to defend himself against accusations that he is pro Putin and against Ukraine I mean there were just so many moment well well look I mean the Trump campaign added two goals here they wanted to try to tie KLA Harris to the most liberal past positions that she took on which I think even you know Trump's biggest supporters will say he left some points on the board they think he did that reasonably well is it credible to call her a Marxist well credible no but is it Trump yes and this is where I'm going with the rest of this right he he can he hit her on the things that they wanted to hit her on they tied her to Joe Biden they tried to tie her to some of these liberal positions but he also was Trump and that he's there's certain things where he's just not going to change Victor Orban comes up in probably every rally and certainly every interview of course Trump was going to bring him up last night there was no way that could be prepped out of him likewise the idea that he wouldn't chase her on crowd sizes the Trump campaign sort of knows there's only so much they can do to keep him in kind of a narrower Lane and the person he always is and so that's what voters got to see last night that is the unfiltered Trump there are some people in his orbit who think that's good for him I think the Harris campaign thinks it's also good for them but I think the broad consensus when I've talked to Trump supporters Trump allies Trump staff is that there is more he could have done and I think there'll be a very hot debate in Trump World about whether they want to do this again with another debate somewhere down the line and preparation matters lindsy Graham of all people was criticizing the Preppers just the way so many Biden supporters were criticizing who had prepped him for that first debate well I think Lindsay was upset about the form policy I mean think about it Matt Gates and and Tulsa gabard couldn't be more polar more polar opposite a good point so I think that was his frustration over um the former president's uh inability to say he wanted Ukraine to win the war so knowing where his one track mine is and I say this with respect to to Senator Graham I think that's and so he's but that's not prep that's Trump oh well that's what I would say but of course typical you can't attack the leader so who do you attack right the two easy the two easy marks Tulsa gabard and Mt Gates and Monica you know Philip Ry is from covering Hillary Clinton as do I from the Clinton world the state department under Clinton he he had no relationship with K Harris before all of this and he had done he had played Donald Trump for Hillary debates and basically in the communication once she took over as the nominee with Hillary so he he stepped in and he was getting um great praise for the way he played Donald Trump last night and what he does through this debate process is he really tries to inhabit and embody Donald Trump down to the outfit the suit the tie the lifts the makeup he did all of that just like he did for Hillary Clinton back in 2016 and that I'm told is something that they felt was an effective tool in getting kamla Harris ready for this debate last night because she had never met Donald Trump in person or really spent any time with him so it's one thing of course to study that game film and it's another to try to really be doing those pretend exchanges with someone who is really trying to be Donald Trump in the room so I'm told by people that there were questions last last night and exchanges that took place that were almost exactly what they had anticipated and prepared for and thought would come up so she felt very well equipped to handle them and I think that was something where they learned that from Joe Biden's debate prep and camp that there was this sense of needing to prepare and perhaps there are many people who said he clearly didn't prepare in the right way given his poor performance but she approach approached it as a prosecutor preparing for trial and said that don't really believe in not doing that kind of level of preparation and that's why they enlisted Philip Rus to do what he did and play his part as well and and one other uh preparer was Karen dun who is a really prominent defense lawyer she knows had a cross-examine rather than being a prosecutor and she had been on the Eugene Carol Case the legal team uh most recently she was involved with the Google team this week and she was a big fact also someone new to that world Garrett there's a new post from Donald Trump just now you want to share yeah Donald Trump on true social posting about the possibility of another debate which we were just discussing he writes in part let me bring it up here oh good we've got it in the world of boxing UFC when a fighter gets beaten or knocked down they get up and scream I demand a rematch I demand a rematch well it's no different with the debate she was beaten badly last night every poll has us winning in one case 922 to8 why would I do a rematch on the polls he's mostly talking about Twitter polls by right-wing news sites I wouldn't put too much into that but look I mean this is a complete reversal from Donald Trump who had previously pre-agreed to any time any place anywhere he'd agreed to debates on ABC NBC Fox News now he's walking that back I it it's it is a complete and total reversal of his position on this I do say I do think uh if you if you made me bet on it I Trump will be goated into participating into another debate because the stakes of not showing up after this will be very hard for him to so I believe that Chris Lo was going to jump on debate invites like they were grenades right I would never have put him up against her um but the only way to convince him not to do it is to make him think he won so how much I'm curious do you think the campaign team is trying to tell him you were great you did great you don't need to do this again because if he if they had all hint he wasn't good then he might do this again and it would be another I don't he doesn't know how to do Phil Rucker here Phil you wrote books on Donald Trump what's on his mindset today is he going to be pressured into another debate well I think Chuck just hit on something there I I and I think that's exactly right that knowing Trump um that the way to get him to debate is to convince him he lost and and he needs the rematch uh to regain uh whatever momentum he's had but look I think um you know it it partly depends on whether the Harris Camp is willing to do something with Fox News um that seemed to be something that Trump uh was open to just a couple hours ago this morning and so we'll see where these negotiations go but clearly um Trump I think is rattled by the comma Harris that he saw on stage last night he has never faced an opponent uh that crisp in you know his or her prosecution of his record um as she was last night and and did not seem very well prepared for it and in fact the the time count shows that ABC which did allow factchecking they did their own they allowed some they were showing some flexibility they gave him five more minutes five minutes to reot that she did not have if you look at the clock Chuck final Point here oh I think she would gladly have given five more minutes and five more minutes I mean you know it is fascinating to me that how the Harris campaign has has decided to take Trump on belittle him make him small he's not this menacing figure that that is threatening to destroy America the way Joe Biden was painting him or to a lesser extent even Hillary Clinton like this is and this is borrowing a page from Barack Obama dealt with Donald Trump now granted Obama never actually faced him in a campaign but it was it was a belittling it was the whole Gary Bucy shot and all of this stuff it this stuff does get under his skin he can't handle it and we're seeing I mean this is why I I I'll if I were in the lasita wild shoes like again I would not put him up against her again because the abortion contrast alone and that's the most important thing about he disagreed with JD van most important part of this debate he gave that unforced air and that answer Joe Biden could have never done what KLA Harris did and that's why Joe Biden couldn't win this election because he's uncomfortable with the issue of abortion right she said what she said talking about humanizing it Joe Biden couldn't even bring himself to utter the words abortion ban so she called Trump abortion ban Advantage Garrett hake jck Todd Mark Alba and of course Phil Rucker thanks to all of you and in just 90 seconds congrat reaction from the debate and how the Harris campaign goes forward as they work to sway swing voters and about last night this was how Governor Tim Walls reacted in real time to the news live on MSNBC of the Taylor Swift endorsement casting my vote for kamla Harris and Tim walace in the 2024 presidential election I have to get your response to that Mr Governor all those things I I am incredibly grateful first of all to Taylor Swift I say that also as a cat owner of cat owner Harris and Donald Trump clashed in a big way last night over abortion with the vice president leaning in much more confidently than we ever saw President Biden on an issue he just wasn't comfortable with Mr Trump praising the Supreme Court for overturning roie Wade and sending the issue back to the States even after wavering in recent weeks on where he stands on abortion restrictions on a total ban this is an issue that's torn our country apart for 52 two years every legal scholar every Democrat every Republican liberal conservative they all wanted this issue to be brought back to the states where the people could vote you want to talk about this is what people wanted pregnant women who want to carry a pregnancy to term suffering from a miscarriage being denied care in an emergency room because the health care providers are afraid they might go to jail and she's bleeding out in a car in the parking lot she didn't want that her husband didn't want that a 12 or 13-year-old Survivor of incest being forced to carry a pregnancy to term they don't want that joining me now is democratic congresswoman Jasmine Crockett of Texas a Biden Harris campaign National co-chair so welcome congresswoman it's great to see you so Texas actually was Ground Zero on abortion restrictions AB with Wendy Davis and all those protests for years before you know before dos yeah and and know what Chuck Todd was just saying as you were walking in was that there was a a a KLA Harris on the abortion issue is so different than Joe Biden yeah because unlike other men he just is of a generation and of a background that he was never comfortable talking about abortion and certainly not with the empathy of his vice president yeah well this is an issue that the vice president has always taken um as hers this is something that she was out on the campaign Trail making sure um that women felt comfortable with this Administration going forward knowing that they would fight to preserve their rights and when you talk about Texas being Ground Zero it wasn't that Texas was Ground Zero Texas still is Ground Zero in January the Republicans in Texas plan to introduce a measure to actually bring about the death penalty as it relates to abortion so unlike what Donald Trump said which we know he's a liar um alternative facts whatever you want to call it we did not want the do's decision to take place we did not want the overturning of row and what is so sad to me as a Texan is that roow v Wade is a Dallas Texas case Henry Wade was the district attorney right there in my district and so here it is Texas has a rich history of giving women their rights and now Texas history is actually going the other way and so when the Vice President says we won't go back that's exactly what she means we won't go back to these repressive policies that they are trying to push on us and just so Donald Trump knows in case he doesn't not every state has an opportunity to actually put this to a vote because if Texas could we would but we don't have that opportunity interestingly Joe Biden today tweeted out with it we won't go back yeah picking up her phrase so he is all in yeah uh which is significant it is and the way he eased her way to the nomination she couldn't have had it that easily without a cont cont no without a challenge rather if he hadn't jumped in no he's been phenomenal um you know another thing that Trump said that I thought was funny was that um President Biden doesn't even like her I was like where's this coming from like he just talks out the side of his mouth you can tell that they actually have a real affection for one another number one they've actually been on the trail together you've seen their interactions you've seen them embrace one another um and she calls him family they are a family unlike JD Vance and Donald Trump who's like oh yeah we haven't talked about this how is it that you are trying to assure American women that you are going to be the best Administration for them and you failed to talk to your Vice Presidential nominee about the issue of abortion that makes no sense so either you're lying to us and you actually did talk to him or you just are making up something else again well there was another moment like that where he was pressing her on Healthcare and then when she asked him where his plan is he said well we have a concept uh I want to ask you about Donald Trump's false claim last night that immigrants Asian immigrants are eating people's dogs and cats in Ohio it was a conspiracy theory it's not true I asked Republican Congressman Byron Donalds about that who was a key key surrogate you know for Donald Trump in the spin room I want to get your reaction on the other side what did you think Congressman seriously about him saying that pets are being eaten by immigrants I don't even care about that it's shouldn't people worry about these things I I want to be clear on this that is a very minor minor issue happening in the United States but it's not happening it's not happening that's the point can I can we let me let me finish it's not happening would you let me finish I mean let me just ask you to react uh first of all is it's it's it's really disappointing specifically to see Byron Donald's um not just go ahead and say I'm not sure if the former president was confused or what considering the fact that Byron Donald's represents Florida Florida potentially has the largest population of Haitian Americans and the fact that he would not just say he may have been confused about a story because there's a different story that doesn't have anything to do with migrants whatsoever he could have potentially tried to do that but instead they just are trying to glaze over it Donald Trump looked unhinged as we know he is as he stood up there and made up lies in then he went off on these crazy fantasies pretending as if even if there had been one person that had done that why would you attribute an entire group of immigrants to potentially going out and stealing everybody's dogs and cats and eating them like that's just insane and the fact that this makes sense to him to bring up in a presidential debate is beyond me but I don't know how you can watch this debate and be um undecided I I could see how you walked in maybe undecided but after watching this you have to be concerned that the most important position that we have in the world is president of the United States and if we've got somebody who literally doesn't know who our friends are and who's not our friends who can't say things like yes I want Ukraine to win the war what Russia did was wrong um and consistently talks about these authoritarians as if they are God themselves um in addition to making up just some of the most ridiculous lies about immigrants in a country of immigrants when he's married to an immigrant I don't know what more you need to see Congressman congresswoman Jasmine Crockett of Texas thank you very much absolutely and the deciders next did K Harris do enough last night to sway swing voters in all important Pennsylvania and other Battleground states she do enough to break the tie look I I think she had a great night but every single day in Pennsylvania matters to break that tie to pick up that last yard it is tough here it's in political AIDS are all debating the aftermath of that debate today who won who lost but it's ultimately going to be up to the voters to decide whether it makes a difference or what happens next in those critical swing States who are going to pave the way to the White House for either KLA Harris or Donald Trump either could win joining in now senior National correspondent and co-anchor of NBC News Daily on NBC News Now Kate snow and in Grand Rapids Michigan for us NBC News correspondent Shaquille Brewster so Kate you spoke with the voters in Pennsylvania's Bucks County one of those bedroom communities outside Philadelphia they're all important you know Hillary lost some people there in 2016 uh Biden won them what are they telling you yeah Hillary actually did win the county back in 2016 but barely barely you're right so it's gone blue before right now they have more registered Republicans in Bucks County than Democrats at the moment I spoke with three undecided voters Andrea and truly undecided um and they were hard to find they're they're not the majority but Lyn kellerer is a registered Republican Hannah Reed who sits in the middle of the table is a registered independent Andrew Wallace is a registered Democrat all three of them i' ask them right after the debate what they thought take a listen I think kamla had a good debate um I'm I'm feel more favorably towards her than to Donald but I'm still I'm still not still not sure not not 100% one way or another maybe it's 5149 but do I like either of these choices no yeah for Trump but do I like either of these choices am I happy about going and pushing the button or writing it down absolutely not all three of them say they do intend to vote they are going to make up their mind but last night just was not the Clincher for them Hannah and the one in the middle was very frustrated and at what she sees as a just a lack of bipartisanship in this country the fact that we're so divided she said they keep describing policies and I don't know how they're going to implement them because they can't get agreement in Congress to do some of the things that they're both talking about Andrea wow that's so interesting and Shaq tell us what you're hearing out in Kent County in Michigan well Andrea I'll tell you you know we this is a county that we've been focused on for some time it's an area where Donald Trump won in 2016 seen Joe Biden flipped in 2020 and I met a couple people uh back during the primary here who told me they voted for Nikki Haley and I reached out to them after the debate they said they were leaning towards Harris before the debate but they said in words of one person uh the conversation about January 6th sealed the deal for her I want you to listen to some of the conversations I had with folks uh here today I wish you would have answered some of the questions a little bit more directly um but you could tell that she was prepared and she knew exactly how to get on a trump K I felt like the beginning she felt a little nervous but then she was really strong and powerful throughout and actually had a plan were there moments that stuck out with you um when Trump accused people of eating pets um freaked me out a little bit the few moments where Trump was rambling away and Harris was just looking at didn't mean what is this guy on I did did speak to a gentleman who told me he was backing Donald Trump before the debate he said that is the same after the debate though he said that moment about the dogs really was kind of weird to me I wish that didn't come up but he said ultimately for him it's about the economy and how he perceives Donald Trump as being a stronger candidate and Andrew I just have to note you know when going around talking to people there are a lot of people who tell me they did not watch the debate or that they've only saw a snippet of that they've only seen a snippet of it it's just a reminder that you know a lot of people are plugged in but plenty of people are still going to form their opinions on what they saw last night or what they hear from what happened last night in the days to come good point sha boosters Kate Snow thanks to both of you and joining me now is Brandon Buck former top Communications adviser to house speakers Paul Ryan and John Boehner so watch this for a moment it's kind of really interesting Senator Mitt Romney was just asked about last night by my colleague Ryan no in the quarters of Congress and let's listen and watch what he said this was classic president Trump uh performance uh in the case of Cel Harris most people didn't know her terribly well other than a few clips that that were not flattering that you might see on the internet and people saw oh actually she's an intelligent capable person who has a point of view on issues and she uh she demonstrated that time and again what do you think Brandon might an endorsement be coming sure sounds like it um yeah look I you have to agree with with everything that he said there uh there's only one candidate here who seems to be taking this whole thing seriously uh KLA Harris came into this um with obviously with a plan um but also speaking directly to voters in a way that Donald Trump just seem seems to be incapable of of doing um he seems to be very not just sort of lazy and not preparing for this debate but entitled that he that he's owed this presidency he doesn't have to work for it now uh whether or not what she did last night is enough I think what what sha showed is is really telling that um you we have seen Donald Trump on stage for on the you know the political stage for a long time um and I'm not really convinced that we are we can have any confidence that him having a a bad performance um is gonna cost him anything that Donald Trump we saw last night let me just interrupt you for a second just a second let's go live to Shanksville Pennsylvania President Biden vice president Harris attending a replay he oh you guys e for for spee for watch spe for for for speech speech for
