Episode 7: 53-man roster & 2024 season wins and losses predictions

what's up Lions fans if you've made it this far then you've effectively been tricked into listening to season 1 episode 7 of the Lions main podcast this week we predict the Lions wins and losses we and I went to the game it was super exciting he and I like the day before he's like George do you want to go to the game I was like how much are the tickets he said he said 25 bucks for standing room only or we can pay like 35 and get seats I was like I said let's get some seats so we're up in the third row or like the third level and the Steelers they traveled well um there was lots of terrible towels I mean the stadium was pretty packed in general but um I don't know if there's just like a lot of bandwagon Steelers fans from when they were good you know not too long ago but there was a lot of them in Detroit on uh Saturday but there was a lot of Detroit fans too so it was it was rocking for a preseason game yeah no I get what you mean mean by when you say uh when they were good but let's not let's be clear the Steelers have not had a losing season in what I mean Jimmer Jer you probably cing somewhere close to since Mike tomlin's time there so close to probably 20 years yeah they I I I would love to have that um to have that record I think since 2010 they haven't finished fourth place in their division ever since 2010 I saw that stat they're one of only a few teams one of which being the grotesque backers but uh another quick critique George there's no bandwagon Steelers fans they're probably the most Die Hard fan base in the NFL they go everywhere all right once again everybody thank you for joining Lions main podcast I'm joined as usual by George Jim and Drew and I think we're fortunate enough two weekends in a row we're joined by the most average Lions fan Jacob Smith so Jacob in this little um these little episodes we've been running of you answering five questions a week the story must continue on so you're currently sitting at 60% six out of 10 questions I just got to let you know um after listening to the episode my mother texted me and said how in the [ __ ] did Jacob not know that we had zero Super Bowl titles I think that's an easy one to let be honest it's okay it's okay and and the point of is you're not supposed to we we're supposed to make you feel bad but when you leave this podcast don't make sure make sure you don't feel bad we want you to feel good about yourself again you are the average lines fan so you set an example this a learning opportunity for me and everybody else out there to gain some more knowledge completely and I think there's quite a few fans out there who listen to the episodes who who won't admit it but probably get more questions than you wrong all righty so on that note Jacob are you ready for your five did the Lions last win their division didn't they win it last year was the first year it's the first year since the 80s last year I'm locking that in point 23 yes you are correct Jacob I didn't know he was going to be shooting on seven foot hoops today all right Jacob you did not start strong um I love you to death but that was [ __ ] embarrassing in the beginning you however you are maintaining your 60% average lines fan average so um congratulations um you're on the path to Glory I think both sides I think the I think the side that's rooting for you George and Drew are um if they're not they should be [ __ ] themselves I'm shaking my boots yeah I'm not worried you got some uh more questions coming up that are I'm looking at questions right now about three of these are gonna slap you out of your seat just slap these bandes on my nipples already and let me get this uh 5K over with yeah look if there's two Barry Sanders questions next week this this things this thing's rigged thing what people are tuning in to actually listen to so today is a big day it is Tuesday the 27th of August and the 53 man roster has been decided for Detroit Lions as well as all the other NFL teams in the league so some of the biggest things as we look through the 53 man roster um I know that we from the prior weeks of the preseason we were most interested in what the quarterbacks situation was going to look like and so it looks like the the Lions actually cut it down to just two quarterbacks which I think shocked me I don't know if it shocked you guys I was fully expecting at least sudfeld to be on the practice squad um I don't know when they P put those out but um are you guys shocked by uh the news of Nate seel not even making the 53 man roster I actually um I actually got a tip uh uh inside news this week about the Nate SFI news because uh I stopped by my local McDonald's and he was serving me French fries so uh no K not surprised at all was the ice cream machine broken like his ability to play quarterback it always I'm not I'm not gonna I'm not gonna hate on the man but uh thank God he's not on the active roster because losing my marbles if Jared GF uh gets injured but let's knock on wood hope he doesn't so next uh looking at like the running backs in the 53 man roster extremely you guys know me especially from last week uh vaky he made the cut I mean if he's not playing running back which doesn't look like he will be I mean it's it's pretty deep in that position we got to get him on every special teams possible even if he's got to be a Blocker on the edge of the field goal team you got to get that kid on the team so what what are his thoughts on siaki um you guys think he will get any reps uh in the back field I think he'll get some limited reps um he seems to be really good at catching out of the back field I could see particularly if Gibbs is out for any stretch him being kind of that passing back so I definitely think he'll be in andout um in involved in the passing game and like you said he'll be probably utilized heavily the Special Teams as well um sad to see that honestly I thought Jamar Jefferson they could have kept five to have a true kind of running back three I feel like Craig Reynolds is also another kind of Swiss army knife but uh I like the four that we have yeah no I agree with you and then uh Drew I mean I'll be the first to admit you said it first you really like the way Isa isaah Williams looked especially in those first two games and it looks like he made the cut sitting at our fourth receiver um what are your thoughts on like the cuts to dpj and what the receiver room looks like I mean I'm I'm I'm stoked for Isaiah Williams I thought he on offense he performed better than anybody else in the in the preseason um made a lot of plays uh yeah I'm interested to see you know obviously there's not a ton of size in our wide receiver room yeah so I'm interested to see if it's going to stay like that uh but yeah I'm stoked I I think um I think we see him yeah yeah especially in that first game um speaking about like siid to the receiver room uh because we do get those um we're all going our phone every second of the day to see who are we adding to the 52 man roster and the uh practice squad uh looks like Tim Patrick the longtime veteran for the Broncos uh per a few sources is actually signed to our practice squad he does add some size and I would be interested to see if he does make it or when he does make it uh to that actual roster uh one of the guys who actually was pretty interesting to see that didn't make it I mean we we talked a lot about our defensive line and our linebackers because we obviously struggled in some of those positions last year one position I didn't think we struggled was tight end so I wasn't looking looking at these guys Parker hessie apparently I just read this is not me actually knowing what I'm talking about but on the Detroit lions.com website he's a good blocker and he can play some fullback so they liked him for the versatility okay well that's awesome cu it's actually weird I've is a fullback even utilized like that much in the NFL no but I think a lot of teams have like a a tight end who can play a little bit of fullback play kind of like what they call HB uh soot not many dedicated fullbacks but guys who can play kind of yeah I I definitely thought it was interesting that they um waved both James Mitchell and Shane zra two guys that have made the roster in the past um yeah obviously like what they see out of uh essi are we even saying that correctly it's pronounced like the uh militia from Germany that the British tried to hire in World War or civil the Revolutionary War uh the the Hessians you you remember that Schoolhouse Rock surprised the Hessians in their layer yeah [ __ ] me just like uh just like other other uh young men going through their quarter life crisis Jim's obviously been super into military documentaries recently got really history um he's been into the History Channel and he's starting a podcast so my man my man watches Ben Brothers once feels like feels like he's a historian proba thce with that being said Parker Hess is a he is an Iowa tight end which is interesting you know just add him to the stack of Iowa tight ends that have made it to the NFL success yeah it's one of those things pronounce different every time we should we should h I I only know how to say it like two different ways so hessie H H hit him with the hesi H hesi okay the hisler like that that's too farler adding letters you guys you guys make it tough's face right now what the [ __ ] looks like Warrior why is my man's so red you got some Son buddy buddy looks red he was looking like uh Kobe swordale out there why is he red isn't he a redhe head like the redhe head long hair he might I don't maybe like strawberry blonde but he reminds me of this funny story when I uh like day one when I got to the Air Force Academy going to the football locker room there was this [ __ ] offensive tackle forgot this kid's name he ended up transferring like four months later he was like 6'4 300 lb and he was quiet as [ __ ] but he had long red hair when he first came in we looked him up on Facebook when he left in his Facebook picture was him standing there with his long hair with an Xbox controller in Gears of War like the case for Gears of War in his other hand every time I see every time I see Kobe Sor though I think of think of that dude where transferred no [ __ ] clue but I remember he was horrible at football I don't know how he made the team he was like just soft as [ __ ] like he was 64 300 lb so I can see why the coach was like yeah Sign Here sign here but uh buddy was was soft buddy was softer than baby [ __ ] Geeks MC speaking of aens tackles I don't think there's anything new um that we seeing there I F think we fully expected those guys uh Giovani Manu didn't he pick up an injury at the end of the preseason or am I just ignorant to that could you be thinking about Christian mahogany I think so yes I'm thinking about mahogany I was just gonna say that shows my um inadequacy with um understanding who the fifth offensive tack six offens tackles were at the Rost on the roster during preseason yeah you're completely dumbass you're right no um no but uh uh there was some talk about maybe being able to like stash him in some sort of international player pathway but because he technically is a citizen to Canada he can't so he has to be on the active roster because if they wave him someone would pick him up right right for sure everything looks in order with the rest of the offensive line for the defensive tackles so it looked like Wingo made it um who was that other guy that got cut sorry let me look at the so Matthew Betts got cut I know George that was your guy sad to see him go sad to see him go it just it just shows the um steep drop off and like Talent from the CFL to NFL again I couldn't play either but you know dude was the defensive player of the year in the CFL and then hopefully he makes the practice squad uh but shows that drop off you would think he would yeah like the way he played but he had that really uh couple nice plays play in in the second game he did have some nice plays I will say his first uh his first sack that you know got a bunch of eyes on him at least my eyes uh he kind of went unblocked so you kind of you got to look at plays like that even though he's shining you know it's may be a mistake on this you know shitty offensive line backup offensive line that he's playing against um but it is surprising that it's surprising that Wingo is still on this team after he just got his [ __ ] stood up you know game after game after game um surprised he's still on the team but you know I think Jim you said you saw otherwise you know these past couple games I saw his [ __ ] get locked up and pushed in the back but I mean I don't know what you were saying it sounds like apparently sounds like you personally want to beat beat his ass steal his girlfriend and tell his mom that she's ugly because I think you have a vendetta I think he played pretty decent now he's not great against the Run he's a smaller defensive tackle but he can he can be disruptive in the in the pass rush so you know I think they like his upside he was in the preseason projected to go a lot higher in the draft so I think he's a guy that that you know similar to a James Houston could have kind of I think he's a notch above useless but we'll see yo yo who's gonna go harder on the um on the Special Teams Malcolm Rodriguez or C iaki he you got two Tri got take your pick for take your yeah take your pick for the um special teams player of the year on the lines SI vaki or Malcolm Rodriguez um nobody l hey nobody lays the boom uh like George's uh boyfriend Malcolm Rodriguez he would know best that that joke is rooted in homophobia I'll have it be known nothing wrong with that well nothing wrong with that I'm omitting this nothing nothing wrong with that being your boyfriend not the homophobia part yeah don't take that as an insult he's a good-looking man and he's good at football so I choose Malcolm Rodriguez have you heard son iaki sing though I did actually and that that is awesome honestly I love having that he's our new little season yeah retired of [ __ ] is he coming out with a studio album was it wasn't he on Dancing With the Stars am I am I I believe that to be true I think that the years back yeah pretty wild H he's a TI crazy that crazy that dance with the stars is taking uh like the third West Third best wide receiver option on like an average Jaguars I think he made an appearance on American Idol is what you're thinking but maybe Dancing with the Stars he's a singer no but they they don't bring dancers on there he was the athlete yeah we got Marvin Jones on Dancing With the Stars before we got GTA 6 let be know if you can find me Marvin Jones Jr on Dancing With the Stars a clip of it he wasn't on you guys think he's gonna come you guys think he's goingon to come back and haunt us I know we need the depth but uh Kindle uh reading books vildor uh made the 53 man roster we make jokes about VOR but I mean we need him on we need him on the team his name's [ __ ] Kindle at least at least he's got uh playing experience what it would be a sick [ __ ] joke if you like week 16 he was starting at corner against the uh week 17 against the San Francisco 49ers I hope he starts carryon you hope so I think he will actually think he's a better player simple yeah you know about I think like four or five weeks ago I was joking with you guys about Lauren Strickland and how and how well you guys knew how much information you guys knew about him and apparently he made the 53 man roster yeah uh uh undrafted free agent Lauren Strickland love that I think uh I think there's three there's three of them on the roster that made the 53 uh including we already talked about about Isaiah Williams and um and the Long Snapper good good who was who was the long the longtime Long Snapper that guy was stealing money and I hated the way he what's his name I hatte I hated the way he it just it just proved to me that like long Snappers just Wast like come on Long Snapper Drew we're talking about kicking kicking [ __ ] the Long Snapper that kicker's got a practice The Long Snapper bro honestly couldn't agree with this take more dude's not [ __ ] doing anything get get rid of kicking why don't you just make the center be the Long Snapper or someone skinny and fast and strong not some 45y old dad why is it always going to be some 45y old [ __ ] bad he's like halfway strong halfway useless he's not even he he looks like a skipper minus 150 PBS and like straight up 12 Ines straight up just dude was like dude could have been teaching uh High School PE like a month ago and can be the be the long a NFL long stabber are you saying Scott Dy is the most average looking uh average looking dude in in the NFL no he's not he's ugly he's not average he's he's ugly maybe though they got some ugly they got some ugly dudes in the NFL where he from where's he from probably from Ohio or something River Ohio's got ugly people Jim should know don't they all come from the same place he's from down gr Illinois whatever the whatever that is that's that's basically Ohio all right guys so moving on to the next topic during the main segment of this podcast right now we're going to break down each week and decide if we win or lose starting with you George so week one we got the LA Rams see that I've seen that they made some offseason moves they added the goat running back Blake Corum um at home what are you guys thinking do you think that we win we struggle we lose what do you guys think well you know how I think I think we're winning this game but it's going to be a tough game I think it's going to be one of the harder games this season even though it's at home it's the opener I mean we still have similar drama if not a little bit more drama than there was before we have uh Kelly Stafford you know she's always stirring the pot you know Matthew they were talking [ __ ] about our kids you know they were talking [ __ ] about me you know that's in his head he's got to defend her honor as he should and you never know they were talking a lot of [ __ ] to him him they hit higgy pretty hard he's going to have a chip on his shoulder it's going to be a tough game but I think we're going to kick their ass George are you saying that uh that a woman Kelly Stafford can't stand up for her herself she needs she needs her man to uh fight for her feel like that's a little um I think in the instance of when she's not able to play the game uh yes true I do think that is the situation that we're given right now but uh otherwise no she doesn't need him at all that's a good that's a good question though Drew I think that's on par with usually uh one of George's George's takes so good good good to clarify that all right guys so George what about a you know look at that you're trying to paintt me as a misogynist over there keep trying bucko all right all right moving on week two Tampa Bay another uh playoff opponent from last season home what do you guys think I don't know why they keep doing this to us I think that's a win gentlemen yeah we're going to crush their wind pipes yeah I agree with you we're gonna smack this [ __ ] all right Arizona away I think this is easily you know Jim Jim has t been in my ear a little bit about this game but I said before this this might be one of the easier games on the schedule what Jim oh oh oh you want me to you want me to well you know here's the thing no no I think it'll be I think it'll be harder game than you think I think it's a win uh I ultimately think uh you know Kyler 5 foot7 Murray is going to struggle out there as someone who's five you know I think Kyler Murray and me would get along better than most NFL players because go 5'8 but um I think he's gonna have Marvin Harrison Jr out there uh an in in there you know who if he's anything like his dad he'll be a real killer um uh fair enough not to sound like uh not to sound like what like it but I I totally see this being a potential Trap game especially if we take those first two games like feeling feeling good about ourselves I also just historically and I've said this before is like uh when we Face a running quarterback or quarterback that's like Pretty mobile uh we struggled and so you know having you know I also really thought that Kyler like stepped up towards the end of the year and I think that Arizona could be sneaky like sneak sneaky team to play against I don't know yeah I'm interested to see that that that connection between Kyler and Marvin Harrison but um dub like George said one of the easier one of the easier ones but good takes all right Seattle home you talk about trap games Drew Seattle has for whatever reason has our [ __ ] number especially when they come to our house what do you guys think about that one upet we're too two and two after this yep I think this is a loss and I think I didn't I didn't say it beforehand I think we're two- two but I think our first loss is to La week one but I think we're two and two Heretics both of you V I look Seattle does have our number but here's the thing if Gino Smith beats us for a third time I'm going to I don't know I'll probably mail someone a pipe bomb I mean this is ridiculous he's not gonna come in again Jim it sounds like you're writing Gino Smith off noit Gino Smith is a solid quarterback he's he's not GNA back well yeah that's a good point he did say that that's a good good little connecting tissue there however comma if Gino Smith the 18th best quarterback in the NFL beats us for the thir year in a row I said we we' we'd win the first three but we'd be letting our nuts hang coming into Seattle and we know how Seattle has our number is this is where I thought our first loss would be you know we're going home we're we're very cocky you know we've been doing well um and then Seattle humbles us okay so we're all across the board moving into week five um Dallas away I think I think the boys are gonna be hungry I think they're goingon to be hungry for this one honestly like I think there's a bad taste up in their mouth after last year especially the way that game ended um it's also yeah I think uh big measuring stick game you know uh probably one of our our tougher you know uh Auto Division opponents and so give me a dub yeah I'm giving it a dub we're coming angry Minnesota week six away I heard that connection between J uh J J Jettas and um whoever the [ __ ] they're quarterback is now I heard I heard it's on Q they're firing mono darnold yeah I think we killed them yeah they can actually be firing all it wants but uh if their if their defense is literally a bunch of Toddlers and tissue paper out there uh I mean all right I'm joking their defense is actually probably the better unit but no way Sam darnold's beating us not happening well is Sam darnold is he a better quarterback than who they had last year no no chance you don't think so Nick Mullins Kur cousins Nick BS or who who's the other dude that uh that was on like four teams last year P pasta not yeah Josh dos dobs they also Sharon Hall dos kind of Do's kind of played well against us so did M no it's a dub though it's a dub dub we're we're both Minnesota games yeah dub all right next game Tennessee home dub now this is a real Trap game but I think it's a win this this should be our easiest game of the of the Season should be but like Jim said could be a trap game that's a dub who's who's the Titans coach uh it's the guy it's the guy from Cincinnati the offensive coordinator I don't remember all I gotta say is don't sleep on will Levis could be actual Trap game he has a outstanding receiving core and Tony Pard in the backfield the but um Ryan offens former offensive coordinator for the Bengals I just caught a fly in my hand Mr get this on video go ahead oh oh oh my gosh told you you're actually right you're actually right any why' you let him go you're clown hey you're hey you're clowns all right next game Green Bay away we're getting into the harder part of our schedule first game Green Bay away what are you thinking and this is on November 3D so it's not it's not [ __ ] hellscape freezing cold out there we seem to beat them on the road and struggle at home at times so I'm going to continue that Trend I think we beat I think we beat them there uh and I'm not gonna do too much of a preview but I think they beat us at home so I think we can just continue that Trend okay I agree with the dub on the first one I think we win Houston Houston away I think it's a I think we win I think it's an air raid I think it how many how many total yards in that game I feel like that's that's that's our shootout this season that might be 900 passing yards total yeah I think it's going to be a fun game I'm I'm looking forward to that that game more than uh more than any other on our schedule um I think I just am also super intrigued by Houston's roster this year obviously they made like uh couple big moves like brought in you know Diggs um I believe they have Joe Mixon now so they kind of like going all in on this uh on this window with CJ strad um and I'm excited to see if CJ's like uh you know able to hold up obviously he had like a crazy good year last year um people are calling him an elite quarterback uh orlovski called him Elite over over Jared Goff um but uh yeah some some people might say y yosi's u [Laughter] doppelganger George said prior to us coming on the par I also I also used to be in love with stord so and and do you also abstain from masturbation uh no com Dr call call your wife Jim you're horny hey shout out Dr D for this game that's all I gotta say all right next game Jacksonville at home we win yeah I think Trevor Lawrence will um true to true to Fashion throw a pick and a fumble and the they'll throw a fumble and a crucial dive to like on a winning Drive Drive he'll fumble the ball so I think we win that one can you imagine paying paying a paying a quarterback uh like Trevor Lawrence more than Jared gof that's like some Daniel Jones [ __ ] what what that's too much slander that's way too much slander on Trevor Lawrence he's a fine quarterback and you guys are treating him like Daniel Jones dude stop it no no no I'm this is actually crazy to say that they someone from ESPN put their stat lines put their pictures blurred next to each other you're statian guys watch football or not Daniel Jones sucks Trevor Lawrence is fine I will say is this what I will say is this fine you're right I had Trevor Lawrence on my team and I had to trade that [ __ ] by week four but you're right there you go I traded for him and it was a horrible trade but I like him George he's got like a a significant losing record in the NFL so far and like who is he throwing to have you watched the seasons have you watched the seasons yeah let's let's back up on that his first season it also came that same graphic so I'm in between you and George because that graphic takes into account his first year where we had Urban Myers as coach and curle Mo and Larry and Drew out there as four receiving options so who who's Daniels Jones receivers Slayton obj slay saquan in the back EV engram he had Evan engram back then he had saquan hly he did have some weapons I I think I think the comparable thing is just the amount that they turn the ball over and so that's just the the thing that's com yeah yeah I think uh there was that one game where Trevor Lawrence was turning the ball over like crazy and they were losing to what the Chargers by a lot and then they came back in one the dude can ball playoff he won the National Championship as a true freshman in college let's stop slandering this guy's name that means a lot that does mean I mean Daniel Jones hey who's the best who's the best college quarterback ever Tim TBO it means nothing George right all right last point on this his rookie season was atrocious uh three and 14 12 touchdowns 17 picks and and five lost fumbles since he's been a good 2022 season mediocre 2023 season he threw that's that's not a test how good he is get I'm saying I'm just saying I'm just saying you guys focusing on the interceptions he can he can get the end of the day you have to get the win and get the job done and he did that I think I think that means his defense eventually stepped up and probably made some big plays because I'll tell you this if you're up 30 points and your team loses it's because your offense can't move the ball and get a single first down shout out to the Falcons but when I see another quarterback throw four picks and still have be able to stay poised enough to win a game and have to score it's not like they didn't score play that was a big deal so I mean you guys are you guys are making him sound like he's a bad quarterback he's getting paid for a reason Daniel Jones that's a different story I don't think look Daniel Jones week one last year I'd rather have Jed G I didn't I didn't say that I didn't say that all right we moving we're moving along all right Indianapolis a way it's completely uh dependent on if Anthony Richardson is healthy or not or actually a good NFL quarterback I don't think that's established I don't know why people are acting like he's like established as like he's got he had a couple good games but I think he still has the Pro is a great quarterback and if he is I think we lose that game away away game mobile quarterback uh but yeah he has to prove it first I love I love that point about the mobile quarterback Jim moving on Chicago at I hate him already I've always hated him but I hate them more already I think this is a w at home but I don't want to speak anymore on it all right yep next game is Green Bay at home so this is the one you said that we're going to struggle with and we usually do at home with these guys unfortunately so I think that's a loss as well George Drew you guys think so no it's a win okay you're an optimist and and and under $300 Buffalo at home I think Buffalo is gonna be absolute ass this year that's a w they came they came in what two years ago on Thanksgiving great game sad loss but great game yeah yeah I I was this one's a dub cuz I'm changing my mind on the first one Chicago we lose on Thanksgiving at home and we go in there and we curb stomp Caleb Williams in Chicago yeah I think we split so tossa will be the way I think we split with Chicago I you know I'm gonna I'm gonna say we get both I I think that I am not uh Caleb Williams believer you know uh at least not yet I think that just right the hype is unreal like he made one good pass in in the preseason and like everybody was losing their mind and it's I think it's there you know it's the hard knocks effect it's the number one overall pick you know he did not play well like he didn't played particularly well in that game and all Bears fans are saying he's like well he started a little slow but then like he made this incredible play and I'm like I don't know it's I feel yeah henen hooker like played amazing yeah we know we saw more from hen and then we did some from Caleb to your point about that one pass Caleb Williams made this one like incredible pass but it was identical to a pass that Bryce young made last year and nobody said [ __ ] about that you know like how everyone's meet rides um Patrick Mahomes but like Matt Stafford does has been doing 100% of that stuff throughout his career I think that's all I think this is going to be that situation every single week you're gonna see Caleb Williams holy [ __ ] incredible pass you're like jar G does that every week CJ stoud Matt Stafford all these quarterbacks do that that's why they're NFL quarterbacks he's gonna lose the locker room by week eight hopefully I mean he did wasn't he telling his punter that he wasn't gonna have to do that too often and I'm pretty sure I think there's a clip from Hard Knock I haven't been watching but I saw like a trailer of the pun like Murray had actually did you hear about this Kyler Murray wanted to like draft he wanted the the Cardinals to draft CD but instead they drafted Isaiah Simmons can you imagine well to be fair Isaiah Simmons has been a great you know was really a good asset they got a seventh round pick back for him so that's huge yeah three years and then exchange for a seventh round pick instead of CD they saved
