Blind football brings the βBeautiful Gameβ to the Paralympics. We play menβs five-a-side football adapted for athletes with vision impairment. Each team has four outfield players and one goalkeeper. Matches are 30 minutes, split into two 15-minute halves. The pitch is the same size as FIFA Futsal. Kickboards stop the ball from going out. And no offside rules ensure continuous play. At the Paralympics, outfield players are almost or fully blind. Some athletes can see light and shadows. And others might see the movement of their hands. All outfield players wear blackout eye masks. Goalkeepers have partial or full vision and are not blindfolded. They must play in the goalkeeper's area. The ball has a bell inside and makes a sound whenever it moves. When we go for the ball, we shout "VOY," giving players another cue on the defence or attack. Each team also has three sighted guides who can give instructions in their respective third of the pitch. The goalkeeper in the defensive third. A guide in the attacking zone who can use words or bang on the goal posts during a free kick or penalty. And finally, the coach in midfield. Fans must be silent until the ball is out of play or a goal is scored! Watch the magic at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.
