[Music] hey guys and welcome to the Take 2 film podcast I am o miles I'm joined again as usual by Drew miles um how are you today y good last filming it here for uh yeah all new change but um yeah I'm excited to film this and then start a new career in my film in the film industry so yeah yeah I mean both of us we'll just say this before we do start with the podcast there isn't as much news this week so uh a little bit little bit talk about news and we have a little bit of chat about we've watched uh me and drewan Cinema watch be ju too we also uh bing the new season of watero road for BBC so I have a chat about that also have a chat about the show in general as first off because I know some of you might not know what that show is especially if you do watch from America and overseas um Drew watch Rebel Ridge on Netflix if you guys have seen it we'll talk a little about that Drew's got his usual director Spotlight um and just got some news from um the past week but yeah this will be the final episode that we do uh in a we'll have a different venue uh our background will be completely different from next week we're both going to University so um we we we the timings like I say will change once we got our time tables set in then we can talk we most likely have a different day um but um but the podcast will still be going on um but we are going to start the podcast with the news with with some sad news um with uh unfortunately with the passing of of James L Jones uh he's probably well most well known for two roles uh one being uh the iconic role of dar Vader um was the voice of Darth Vader yeah and we ALS and he also voiced muasa in both the original Lion King and also the 201 2017 photo realistic remake um obviously a sad person to miss he he's he's both all of his he has some great iconic roles as well he is also in Coming to America as well he he has so many iconic roles he'll be sorely missed in the film industry especially when me as a fan of Star Wars he brought that character to life that voice shows the darkness the power in him which is incredible we've now lost most of the original crew from Star Wars now which is really sad so also we've lost we lost Carrie Fisher we lost um what now Jame we've lost the voice and the actor behind Darth feden now as well we also lost um we also lost uh the person that played chewbaca and also um R2D2 so we've lost quite a lot from the original films now um so it's really sad let you say the like K like people that have passed like you say Obviously K Fisher passed back in 2016 yeah um it wasn't too long after um came last just after last just before the Last Jedi yeah straight after I remember physically remembering it it I think it was the same day me and my me and my um our dad went to watch uh Star Wars Rogue one which also she has a kind of a fing right at the end of it and we come out and then I look at my phone and car Fisher died so that that was very surreal and very sad it was just like just cuz someone who had so many iconic roles I mean I mean Star Wars I grew up on Star Wars as much as possible and just it's just all my all them dying busy like the last two Survivor main ones Harris for and mark C they're the only ones left um but yeah I'm just it's just sad seeing someone that's so iconic pass away yeah and he's you know he's going to be um in the the hearts of of um mostly Star Wars fans but yeah Lion King was you know so iconic he's you know an Emmy Award you know he's he's he's he's got an e got um I and he got per se say he won a an an honorary Oscar um but he has won an Emmy he won two two Emmys two Tony uh a Grammy and then one w a Golden Globe as well as an Academy honory Award um and he's in the he's also probably more well known for theater um he was in Broadway for a long period of his time um with you know doing stuff on the uh sorry on the Broadway stage with shows like Of Mice and Men sunrise at Cambell a fell On Golden Pond cat on a tin roof and you can't take it with you um and yeah's and he with that he got inducted into the Hall of Fame American Theater hall of fame um and he was honored as a Disney Legend and a special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement as well um and there is a theater called the James L Jones theater in Broadway and I imagine that what will keep his legacy going on years to come it's definitely a a very s it' be a sely missed person in the in the industry and I thought and I just hope feel sympathy for uh his family and um and hope I hope they um are okay yeah but we'll um we will move on but like I say I hope everyone uh in this family are doing okay and we um wish you good luck we all our deepest sympathies are with you um we'll chat a little bit about I should say like a something that was big to him which was the EMS um which obviously the credit Arts emies was uh last week or uh was in a couple days ago with the normal Prime we'll have a CH a little bit of a chat about that now um so we'll start with the cred Arts as there was a lot um this is more to do with so this is like like Technical and techical so if you want to start with um something that finally she gets an award um Angela Basset finally won an award and it was for best voice over um which finally she's been deserving of awards for so long she lost obviously um the the Oscar and also a couple more other shows TV and stuff that she I thoroughly deserve she should have done but um yeah now she's she's the awards that she's had is that um she's won two on Globes a screen a Screen Actor Guild award and you know to um but like never has won an Academy Award um or an Emy before Al after um but she was finally given an Academy honory Award an hory Oscar back in uh January this year and like you say she finally got an Emmy uh that was for outstanding narrator in Queens of African queens um and it was you know a very stacked um nomination you had like octavus Spencer Paul rad Morgan Freeman David atra um but yeah well done to her um just just we'll go through some because a lot of this is um like I say it's a lot more technical Awards which You' like to talk about but a couple that would say d fat and Dyke you know 98 um wins another Emmy for his uh 98 years of magic variety special um we've got uh welcome to rexim wins the outstanding un unstructed reality program uh with Becka winning outstanding documentary notification Series so they pick up more more rewards um so but then we'll go to quick to performing so outstanding guest actor in a comedy series went to John berel for the bear um in fishes the episode of fishes when he was Michael bazat and they cleaned up a lot in these that exact episode jie Curt's picked up herself a Emmy Award um for that same episode um so like as someone who's you know picked up that again I think I believe it might be a second Emmy or a first Emmy um as well you know adding to Academy Award ba as well so she's she's what one away from a an OT as well so interesting there um but then we also had for drama series N she won she's won a she's won a Glo a globe am me a baa uh she won an Oscar she won an Oscar so she's she's waiting for um she hasn't won she's been nominated for a Grammy but hasn't won it um she's won two Golden Glow One Prime only one Academy Award but like I say there was L of other ones like um Eric Andre won for best short film for short film comedy or drama series and Eric Andre the Eric Andre show um best yeah best guest actress in the drama Mr Mrs Smith um so yeah and then cat voice over uh High R off one for big mouth and yeah so Al together interesting but like I say we have got the prime time emies which is on the 15th so we will uh talk about that on next week's podcast um and that you know there's some big big uh big GS in this the bear was expected to do a lot this time uh Outstanding Drama Series if you know you got comedy you got Albert Elementary them and the bear will probably you know going up against each other with only r w maybe an outsider for that um but yeah there's there's there's always of interesting categories and we'll talk about that next week um but another news going back on what we said last week about Green Lantern so he said that Josh Boling was picked as the first choice to go for how Jordan um but there is some breaking new there is some news that came out the last couple days from that what is that so yeah so yes he has passed on on that opportunity so I think speaking from what we saw last week it will most likely be y McGregor or Matthew mccon a lot of fans I've seen who were tweeting uh after that were asking for Chris Pine in my opinion I do not want him um I just I just think I think y McGregor or Matthew con will be goodal Jordans I just don't think just because he looks exactly like the comic book you should play him because I just don't think he's got the acting capabilities for it um I don't like that just cuz he looks like a com book like yeah I understand that looking the part yeah is a part but they're actors at the end of the day they can change the look if they want to and in my opinion it's about how the points is not how they look most of the time yeah um but I know it's a comic book film and sometimes that will happen but at the end of the day that's what happens but I I like I say wouldn't mind either of those two to pick up that role that they're both incredible actors and uh people that I would like to see in a more comic book environment I know obviously y McGregor's you know with with do uh with um Star Wars and everything yeah yeah it's like quite sci-fi in fantasy and yeah Ro um so good see we do more hero in one of the most underrated films in the DCU I DC I would say but a pre is a is a decent is a decent film it's entertaining it's it's just entertaining film to watch and be some people slander it and it's it's not that bad of a film I don't people do it so yeah we've also um had some news on the spiderverse sequel Spider-Man beyond the spiderverse um so what we do what we so originally it was supposed to be out uh I believe in May this year that got delayed indefinitely one due to the strikes and then saying they need more time uh then there were some rumors um I don't know who was the first one to break it uh saying that um that it there's been that the entire thing was scrapped due to the script not being good enough but that uh report has been squashed yeah both both um Christopher Miller and um and pimpleton Daniel Pon the composer and then director/ producers um have corly said that it's not true they're focusing on the film they didn't specify a release date because we don't know how long because animation especially the animation they're doing for this film is going to take time I suspect a 2027 release date or a 2026 it's one of the two I think I think I would go end 2025 maybe mid 2026 yeah I I just think I just think they've still got plenty of time to film but still I'm really excited for the film the first two were incredible um I think the second one should have won the Oscar in my opinion um but still I'm excited for the next one when it comes out they they've they've created a new a new style of Animation which I love um and I think that's definitely should be taught more um especially when I think of film studies I'm going over tangent here but as a studied film at at GC a level and I know at GCC as well they don't have an animation category where you have to study especially in educast which I did I think they should um as it gives because it's it's a form of it's a genre or film sometimes it's it's that different creative aspect which I think is definitely needed um it's a different way to outreach potential and create this fantas classical stories in a bridge of realism um especially with stuff like the Minecraft movie if we all about how you know yeah uh how that I opinion should have been animation um but we talked about last week so let's not go into too much l about that but um yeah I go on my tangent about animation now but uh yeah just um hope is better there has been a lot of start uh Spider-Man news um in all three FRS really uh the animation front uh telion now ncu Spider-Man font and then Sony's Spiderman so you go Sony for now they're kind of uh their Spider-Man newr show it's been officially confirmed that Richard gleon will be playing the villain which I'm good Richard gon's fantastic guy 28 Days Later obviously Harry Potter um is he even confirmed that he's going to return in 28 years or no he's he died mate oh he died yeah sorry I haven't watched that film in about three years I need to rewatch it before the new one comes out next year you know I could come back back as a zombie we'll see uh I think so happen in the end film I remember exactly but yeah um yeah basically the side he's great obviously his family also are great actors I mean his son was in Star Wars uh and his other his other some Wars and Star Wars actually so two of them are in Star Wars um and and don't forget har Potter don't forget both of them in Harry Potter Brendon and his son he son played one of the Weasley yeah obviously he played mad yeah so but we a bit more Star Wars news but I just want to touch on it now um I know that they are at the moment doing a UK car search for the three the trilogy um the main Trio uh for the Harry Potter series that going to be streaming on Max um I believe what are the ages 9 to 11 yeah I think it 9 to 11 yeah and they are not doing yeah and they've said it's completely search isn't it something UK based which I'm glad uh not going to America which was actually the original plan for the first Harry Potter the original one they originally going to film It in America um so glad they keeping it here us leave in studios I'm guessing um as Warner Bros um but I'm I'm I'm excited and not because yeah I I love the original films they're incredible um I'm excited to see someone else's take on it as a TV show but then JK Rowland still being part of it kind of that it just like I just it's just her it's what she said and her views on it's just gonna ruin things I they need to take her out the they to take her out of it basically but um the problem is without her she has every right to then if that doesen to bin it so at the end of the day it's gonna have to be working with there because our production company I believe is on it so yeah um but yeah uh back Spider-man here um so Spiderman Man 4 um obviously we said that um obviously what was not coming back to direct this one um it's now be we've had rumors of different directors uh now we have been confirmed the director and it will be Daniel Dustin kettin uh who all directed uh Shang he not confirmed but he is in talks oh in talks but um yeah I'm pretty happy about that to say that the least um but we do know for defer that Tom Holland and zind are confirmed they're the two that are confirmed the thing I have about zind I'm not the biggest fan of her coming back I would need a story without her obviously what happened the end of the last Spider-Man I'm not going rewatch it in the syy world actually it's near the end of Spider-Man stuff but um but yeah I just think taking him out change having him story with Felicia or uh black cat or M or may or um you're a black cat uh will be a cool story line and and I've heard rumors of that it's a grand level film with multiversal elements which I'm kind of curious about how can it be a ground level Street film with multiversal elements um this is why the whole thing about oh uh does that mean that Andrew Garfield's coming back because how you going to do a gr M's first elements you'd bring back another Spider-Man that's what people think and obviously he's now reject or or said in it which he's going to do isn't he also if they do it again though that's going to lessen it yeah in my opinion Sony want the money that's the only reason why but um yeah fun times all right so yeah about that one we've also got um a little element about The Hobbit we've got the hunt for goem directed by Andy Circus has has been um told that he'll be split into two films not going to lie there's much worldwi you can do with Hobbit so I don't mind it being between two films and fantastic director uh have a fantastic cast and um I'm pretty excited to see what they'll do with that film um and then one which was surprising to say at least about fan up the Opera a young adult version on Disney plus yeah so a young adult version so this is based on the novel not the musical so um it's at the moment it's completely at its early development so um but this is from Kenny Ora who is probably Well's most well known for two you know big hit Disney TV franchises with High School Musical and The Descendants franchise um so this he's returned to Disney after ten he did a few uh movies for Netflix I believe he had a he had an exclusive deal with them um so he is back now with Disney so this this deal from this is uh I'm looking at a report from deadline um so at the moment uh he is uh basically in uh talks with them and developing it um with a spec script so it's very early but he will direct it so this will be his um so people don't know what it is so the 1909 offal which is set in the 1880s based on the 199 novel tells a story of Eric a mysterious disfigured musical genius who lives on the app Paris opera house he become obsessed with the young spner Christine and M play defense to make her the star of the Opera I don't know if they're going to time Jump here I don't know if they're going to not gonna lie I would actually quite enjoy a time Jump um I just think um something a bit different something a bit uh different to the original I'll quite like um I mean we' seen stuff of other stuff about things Chang and having different time zones which I quite enjoy yeah but I was going to say this is his bats Disney because the last show he did was a Netflix one uh which was Julian the Phantoms which got um which is I think people say was really really good and it got um like a decent review but then it got can after one season so um I mean he is he is known for one of the most iconic films of all time so yeah and like you say two of the most iconic films of all time so he's M he directed Fred as bu's day off yeah Dirty Dancing Yeah dancing no worry about that he did the choreography for those two didn't direct him I'm dumbass I was looking at things but like I say for kids he's created two great franchises in my opinion other think descendant is a highly underrated Disney well not underrated it's it's quite big but it's like it's probably Disney's best franchise under after the N schol Musical and you expect that by the same director yeah know definitely um but yeah there's just a couple more news before we do move on to a couple of reviews um Happy Gilmore 2 so obviously a big big franchise and we finally got uh other than obviously the uh announcement a few weeks ago is this is going to be straight onto Netflix I believe um and it will include so we are getting the returns of so obviously uh Adam Sandler uh Christopher McDonald is going to reprise his role as shoter mcguin uh and Julia Bowen is going to reprise her role as Virginia Vette we also got Nick swartson who's um a good friend of of Adam Sandler he's you know been in a a few of his films Classics uh like he's been in he was in grown-ups too and pixels where he was just a cameo role so he's been in a lot of the films that um Adam Sandler was so he's uh he's going to be in it uh Benny savy as well probably well known he's a he's more of a director really um we were talking about one of his films like a weeks ago I think actually yeah like I know yeah um he was in uh the oh yeah the smashing machine so he's directing that which is the Dwayne Johnson one but he's gonna make he's going to be in this film um and the surprising one for me a Bad Bunny is going to be in it as well as there'll be a cameo from Travis Kelce from Travis Kelsey which will be very interesting yeah um all right so there's another thing here if you want to talk about just a quick thing oceans for is in it works uh George brick come back with Edward Burger who is known for all qu on the Western Front uh will be in talks to direct not really a big oceans fan but uh still curious Edward burer made one of the most hav't him someone who did like a more because all fun I believe it's a German film right it's German but uh it had a I had a lot of British car uh British um background to it like the cinematography and stuff were British yeah um and also it's most depress one of the most depressing films I've seen so um the last two Oscars there's been two depressing films about about Germany during World World War II um [Music] which Jesus um but yeah okay and then we're gonna hit one more which is Kirsten's do it who is making her uh she making her director debut for the chronology of water which I think is a book uh which uh the synopsis for this film is an adaption of the author's Memoir it focus on bisexual her addiction issues it will be it will start um image and Poots um who I only know her for 20 uh she's in 28 weeks um 20 weeks late later she's in Green Room which I will be talking about later um about this other stuff but um yeah uh looks interesting film directoral debut excited to see what her um what her thing will be about so yeah most definitely we'll see about that 100% uh but that is all we've got for the first period of the podcast but we will be back in just a minute hi guys welcome back to the take two film podcast I am Owen miles we are back and this time we're G have a quick chat about some uh shows and films been watching we will start off uh with the film Drew was watching on Netflix couldn't do that I add some uh work stuff to do for uni but Drew has been able to watch uh one of the new films on Netflix but so we link to our director Spotlight right at the end yeah so Rebel Ridge uh not lie just saw on Netflix felt like watching it um and then I I Googled it a bit and had good reviews and I thought yeah it was a really interesting Thriller um it's about a guy uh who's trying to bail his cousin out of prison out of like jail um and then gets uh caught by police uh gets his money taken from the police that was roughly his and uh things happen uh it's interesting to see the judicial system and that kind of thing and how how they try and do if things unfair um iend to go and watch it also has the uh one that characters in the film uh is the girl that played Violet Bard in Charlie and the trucker Factory which was uh interesting still looks the exact same you can clearly see it's her she cool how she kept that the same most of the time um and then also um originally it supposed to be John Boer in that film but obviously got changed CU due to scheduling conflicts and stuff for him I think family stuff that happened but um yeah really enjoyable film highly recommend you go and watch it it's really interesting so um if you got if you got Netflix highend you go and watch the film yeah um 100% uh we also did watch a uh TV show people don't know what water road is right we're going a quick talk about water Road just for a second so water road if people don't know is a school is a series in the UK um BBC it's a BBC production um and it's based it's based basically on a school in Manchester um and it's had a revolving cast down the years like every couple years usually it changes with you know the more experienced students moving moving out maybe making some SPID appear or come back as you know staff um and coming and then new students coming in and it was a cult series back in the day um I think it start in the early 2000s and uh continued till uh 2015 um it started off you know in Manchester moved to Scotland at one point a couple years uh before its end um and then um during the pandemic it you know it resurged as on bbci player when he got released on there as a massive podcast oh massive podcast a massive you know streaming hit for the I um and then they announced it was coming back this was just after akley Bridge which was another TV show that was big in the UK with school was sort of like a spiritual successor I would say to the original yeah yeah it was kind of similar kind of similar style set up north yeah um and a bit different gave it a bit more of a modern modern twist than a modern style to it which was good first three seasons were good went downhill after the last two were a bit they changed the format and and I'm pretty sure when w Road got announced Channel 4 sort of thought that it wasn't too long I thought always announced that you know a bridge would end um so in September 2020 so they've had uh 11 so recommissioned and so they've been going you know ever sort of since really uh about two three episodes a year yeah it's been two seasons a year they usually do one September and one January is time um it's last really we always watch it like first season a row so yeah we had um so last time first season we had was uh we had it in January uh 2023 yeah uh then we had it in May then we had it in January and then we had it in sept December yeah we also have two more seasons officially announced um as well um but we don't know what about that yet um about any more and stuff but yeah looks really interesting yeah like I say we watched the this 14th series and it took a bit of a turn Jason Manford um was in it um he was the new head teacher as Kim as Kim Campbell obviously being played by um uh played obviously sorry my brain is fried again uh OB play by Angela Griffin um so she made one one pency episode at the end of the year in episode eight um but I think I what people are saying I think Jason Manford did a really really good job I think he played the role um we're not going to spoil it if you do guys want to see it um I don't know if you can access it anywhere other than the UK but might be away um but I mean for me he did a really good um he did a really really good job a really really good job but you know um you know difficult to tell um and I think him and his the kid who played the person who played his kid as well did really well really really well well and I think this series was maybe not as good as season as season 11 or the first the first time but yeah rival series but I still think it was a good a really really good uh season and I did really like it yeah most definitely um excited to see the next people were disappointed about Jason manford's accent it but I actually quite enjoyed it um yeah but you can always um disagree with people so yeah all right so we're going to talk and I also like how it bring is bringing more people into the industry by giving younger people a chance to be in it and people you wouldn't usually have a chance to to have a go in the film a chance there so that's what I really liked about that as well um and then also all right so that good and then if we want to talk about the last the only other film we watched this week which was Beetle Juice do Beetle Juice Beetle Juice as it was called yeah um really enjoyed it U not as good as the original but had that same style that Tim Burton loves to use uh General tager is also incredible in it um I think I think she's just she's a proper star she is um and 100% in this sort of horror sort of go style she's incredible she's she's 100% you know G to be one I think she can you know I really want to see her mov to different parts like I know she's trying with you know the other films that she's done in recent times like mill girl that sort of thing but I think she could really like etch her career in the horror you know world and I think do EXA Wednesday you could sort of say EDG is that and obviously that's another collaboration with Tim and she's been an executive producer on that role so I think but yeah I think the only sort of I would say criticism would be uh Monica Baluchi's character of um yeah Monica bucci's character of Dolores as much but it was kind of only used to give be juice a reason why to help in this but then at the end but then at the end of the day you wouldn't have needed it yeah you could have seriously took her away from the film and maybe even like had the guy who played um the love interest generala for a bit in there you could have had him be the proper main villain of it yeah and like uh you know Jamie Fraser yeah and he he would have you know would have worked perfectly I just don't think a character worked yeah people have their opinions it's all that stuff um but yeah really enjoy cinematography in the film was incredible by the way the over iting shots and how he how they built this this cool thing again bringing it back to original places stuff like that I loved it um but yeah um so that was good so uh talking about Rebel Ridge um that we talked about earlier my director uh Spotlight this week will be on the director of Rebel Ridge um who is Germany he originally came in through um cinematography which obviously I want to do with um a film called Hamilton which is an independent film um which was screened at multiple um film festivals very independent um Which films about two accident parents and how they managed to work about premature parents it's only 65 minutes so it's a short film um then he also did a documentary for the search of Jackie Paris this Autumn Putty Hill it's another dependent so he worked his way in a lot of independent projects to start off with he is a very independent style of of director um no his stuff like that um being his last talk called I used to be darker which is set man he did a lot of stuff in Maryland Baltimore stuff that kind of way um then his directoral debut in 2007 was murder party which is a horror comedy um which was his kind of um film company which is about which is um interesting called the LA Madness uh interesting film really enjoyed really enjoyed that EDG style to it it was only had like a 200k budget so it's was really interesting there um then his next film which was blue rain which is a wrench filler which was all film which which kicked off how crowdfunding can be used to makeing a fantastic film as it was done on Kickstarter his film um which only had a 420 Grand budget um which premiered at can and uh had a very good reception um people enjoying the film which I really enjoyed as well had that cool um style to it and he also did the cinematography for it as well which I liked how he moved things around stuff like that but I think my favorite project from him was Green Room which he did with a24 it was just of a24 um which is set in a green room so times um which is a punk band to get attacked by neonazi skin heads after a murder in a Pacific Northwest and it's so cramped and and you're just stuck in this room and you feel so claustrophobic it also Stars Patrick Stewart imag and Poots um Joe Cole um so it's really interesting film if you hav if you haven't watched it I'll you go and watch it um it's really interesting uh then his next film after that was called hold the dark which was also a Netflix film he's had a couple Netflix projects these days start Oscar Nomine Jeffrey Wright um which is also an interesting film which is uh which is about in Alaska and about um about how a character goes through stuff uh it's a really another interesting film he's very good at this thriller style he is so I'm I'm really I'm really enjoying in his style I just legit found him and then I knew about Green Room I didn't know he directed it um so uh I really really excited to see how how he did these projects so I was I was really curious um then he also did a couple episodes of True Detective as well um which True Detectives iconic films ionic TV shows sorry um the 2019 um the 2019 one which if I can get up real quick which was Mah Ali and Steven dorf Stephan DF um which is also a great show so um yeah uh really interested to see what he has gotten next I don't think he has any projects lined up yet um so uh and also hold uh and yeah so uh but this one he produced and directed and edited so he likes to be all around the business um Jeremy SAA so yeah um all right that that's the end of today's podcast um feels weird saying this as my last time doing it here for a while um but um I hope you guys enjoyed it um and come back next week don't know exactly when we'll do it we'll sort some out um when we can but I hope you guys have a good rest of your day and um we'll see you soon and cut [Music]
