hi this is TK and I'm Tony and we just watched the latest Lee Daniels film that just premiered today on Netflix 2024's the Deliverance St did we watch it yeah storing Glenn Close and Andre day Andre day she ever done anything else Andre day is a um she's a singer oh she appeared in Lee Daniels uh Billy Holiday versus the United States I've never seen it but she got like Oscar consideration and stuff for that so um so she starring in this film The Deliverance as Ebony Jackson the um the mother of a family based on a true life event which we'll get to here in a bit he told me earlier so the Deliverance just to give an idea of plot it's about a mother and her three children two boys and a girl and she lives with her white mother played by Glen close um I don't remember her name oh baa baa Glen Close plays baa abon's mom on this movie and uh apparently ebony has a history of alcohol abuse and I think abusing her children so moved to this new home to start a fresh start because her her husband uh apparently left her and tried to get custody of the kids yeah he's in Iraq somewhere I think right and so her so her her goal was just to move to this house get a new start bring her mind with her to help the only issue is is that the house that they mooved to might be a portal to hell they do a little they they go in into family drama a lot um I honestly I think this movie would have worked just as well as a drama in of a straight horror movie because there's not that many scares in there but um they do kind of go over an interesting Dynamic that I was telling Tony I hadn't seen on film you know TV before is that uh a a biracial daughter and how she interacts with her white mom so the first half of the film kind of uh covers their Dynamic and it's not a good one um so yeah so what do you want to say about the the story itself for and it's a it's a lot of traditional family drama I mean she's got a CPS worker after she uh has the children acting weird and maybe possessed she's got a a lot of regular world problems that are surrounding her and it's how she's dealing with those that uh occupy the majority of the movie it's not really till the end that we get into the situation with the demons per what you want to say about the the story itself for well uniquely this I couldn't help but think about an old movie named Abby that was released in 74 it was a meshing of black sportti movies that were popular at the time and of course the Exorcist would had just which had just came out uh they put out a movie came named Abby were in the woman gets possessed and kind of reminded me of this one it's just that that movie is so hard to see I've never seen it so I'd be wondering if it would be holding up or have competition with this movie not able to get a copy of it no I I think you can watch it on one of the streaming channels but the the transfer is just horrible you can barely make out what's going on it's called Abby Abby with Carol speed and the dude that played blackula oh I didn't know I don't know his name he's The Exorcist So I know his face but not his name but anyway uh it remind me of that but I it it was a good premise although my my wife laughed at me when I said I thought it was a little bit profane I mean does every scene need to have cursing and MF this and that's just me though okay so o overall I like this film how about you um I I think it was surprisingly original in several ways um the whole I mean we're jumping to the end here but the whole idea of belief in Christ actually defeating a demon I've never seen that in the movie uh they work around it they say oh you know somebody made a sacrifice this way or that way but it's never really direct Jesus saved your ass and I like that part of it I really did I like that too I like that and um you'll see where there is another uh mysterious woman that just sits out in front of the Jacksons eony and her her family 2300 Jackson well I forgot they made a song about that uh but yeah she sitting out in front of her house and turns out that this lady that just sits there she is an apostle I think she's a Jane or something was her name and she gives the backstory to ebony about that house that it is indeed a portal to hell that she'd experience um a a similar situation with the family that lived there in uh previous years before that ended tragically so that was interesting to me from the perspective that it it was the more the house thing reminded me of the amville whor which this takes from a little bit oh yeah I don't I don't think there's a possession movie out there that doesn't borrow a lot from I think it's Unique that they centralize it to a particular location usually the house let's say doesn't have to be haunted for there to be a demon there that the demon just shows up but I kind of enjoyed that it was unique that it took it from the perspective of the house okay and so getting to my likes um I liked Glenn Close Glenn Close got a little ratchet in her she is playing against tight this is something that you this is you've never seen Glen Close like this is not the woman from uh the world according to GARP or the natural she's doing her own thing she really certainly is with the the fake nail the acrylic nails the hair the makeup the Jew the chunky jewelry um but she looks good she looks good I thought it was an interesting casting Choice yeah and she did a really good job I could I could really believe that she had a biracial daughter and she acts that way but that was interesting to see her like that one of my favorite parts of the movie the movie does include um some minor characters um Miss Lawrence is on there I think Miss Lawrence got his uh I don't know what his pronouns are but he got his start with um meie I think on the Real Housewives of Atlanta It's not Charles your lunch is r no not that not that one even though I'm expecting for uh for him to pop up in anything and then timbe Tim B has a minor role is ebony's um boss uh he you might know him he's like a YouTube um social media comedian so it was fun to see him and I loved Miss Lawrence's interaction with with uh Andre D's character because they're best friends but they talk a lot of crap to each other so that was one of the things I liked about the film um again I'm going to mention the fact that I like that the subject matter that being covered as far as like that that familial dynamic between Glen Close and uh and Andre day's character a white mother who raised a biracial daughter wasn't a perfect mother or whatever but just basically how that Dynamic plays out from day to day because there's a particular scene in there where ebony calls out berda her mom about um the way she perceived her front in uh in front of another white person on her you know she said something to the effect that oh yeah black people are good enough to listen to their music and you know you you you know have sex with black men but you're just another white person that when it comes down to it you're black until it's not convenient to be black and I thought was interesting I kind of wish there was a movie Just based on that dynamic in general without the horror aspect think that would have come out by now either Tyler Perry or Lee Daniels or somebody would have made something like that I know it's just kind of interesting that that's not that and that tells me that's just something that that's a wide open landscape for exploration and art be like almost like making a movie about colorism right right yeah and they've done that with school days so at least we can say that that's that's something that that's been done but that's an interesting dynamic um working off the top of my head here that um I I I liked um the performances obviously I loved Monique I think I've covered that though soundtrack Andra has a a a beautiful haunting version of I think which is a a spiritual song a gospel song called I I know tomorrow I think is the name of the song um because she's also a singer I hadn't listened to any her music but but she's a singer me she was really good in this role so the acting was solid all across uh uh the kids did good the kids did a really good job yeah with movies like this you know it depends on those kids acting right and being able to you know pull it off yeah I didn't even think about that but I guess they they had to do that you know that yeah so yeah so what were your what were your dislikes uh a little too over the top but hey that's almost the standard speed for an exorcism movie um the profaneness I don't want to be stick in the mud and come off likeo yeah your granddaddy or whatever but old man's screaming at Clouds I guess the kids say but too much too much cursing they could have done those scenes without as much cursing um and because they're dealing with these Concrete Hard real world drama situations it's kind of depressing I I was kind of depressed in the movie it's like and then they're going to get uh an exorcist involved or an ex uh a possession I should say involved that's even worse but those three would be my main reasons for not liking the mov so the oh and that reminds me the Deliverance that term the title comes from the fact that when the Apostle comes in and uh tries to save the day you'll see that didn't work out so well when you see the movie uh uh she said something to the effect that you know uh ebony asked her is she's is she an exorcist she like no I'm not an Exorcist I what I do is called a a Deliverance because she makes the the argument that you know if you're if you have faith and you know you're you're a follower of Christ and you know his the belief in him and his power can work through you and you can exercise the demon that way well the key point of any movie involving an exorcism is the exorcism scene what do you think about that uh I've never seen a demon that has such a nasty mouth y'all I mean the things that the demon says to eony is just vile that's a hateful demon it's definitely one that uh knows information it shouldn't have and that type of thing that usually makes sure that it's a real Exorcist or a real possession I should say um there's a plot point about Monique that he reveals and she's like how do you even know that so I guess he's really possessed but that acting and that over the top man like they really pull it out here yeah and one of the other things that I I liked about the exorcism scene which I thought was funny was that this apostle that comes in and claims that she she doesn't do exorcism she does deliverances and stuff that demon handed her ass to her five 10 seconds right right uh after it says some really after it said a particularly vile thing to her again I'm not going to repeat it here it's just too much I can smell you yeah let's just leave it that there uh yeah she came in like Billy badass like she was going to that that demon kicked her ass and then the demon had the nerve to one to say I told y'all uh to stop with me I've never heard a demon say that before it's all your fault that sound like something I I should point out again that this movie is based on a true story uh the lady's name the lady that Andre plays her name is Latoya am apparently uh she you know the the events that's depicted in this movie happened to this family now there's always that claim there like with some things like Conjuring and amville right but the thing with this one is that I was doing some research on it and uh there were actual people there's a scene there's a pivotal scene when you see the movie in a hospital room right I'm not going to give it away um but people saw that the and so there were government agents medical people uh and this was a pretty popular case even though I didn't know about it at the time they had had like a segment on uh Inside Edition uh she was on there oh really M and she and there's a documentary about it if you want to check it out uh again Latoya amens is the real life lady's name um and spoiler material of course uh the one good thing that I got out of the in Spiel which details that this was a real event and happened in real life there's a side note there at the end where it says they demolished the house they live lived in in 2016 so if the possession was coming from the house it's gone that's good but overall it's a good movie uh to watch over the weekend if you like horror movies if you like Lee Danel Daniels if you like Monique uh it's it's it's pretty solid you know about I say it's a step or two above a t a tub movie or on the same level as like a lifetime uh yeah movie yeah would you give it a six I 10 we don't well I guess I um I give it a four and a half 10 yeah even though this channel wasn't based on ratings yeah true yeah but hey I guess we can do that because this isn't tick this isn't ticket stream it stream it this is we we watched right we just watched that's why I'm going to name the second going to be cut out she gave it a four and a half I'll give it a five and a half you liked it that much yeah it's a little bit above medium we're getting a lot of medium these days from Hollywood and the movie wasn't too long either that was a yes I noticed that the first second I started watching the movie I I had the timeline up on uh um Netflix and I said oh thank God it's not a two and a half hour movie okay so uh we hope you get the chance to check it out if you're interested uh be sure to like comment and subscribe and we'd like to know what you thought of the Deliverance so until next and tell you tell tell us whether you think we should rate movies on these videos leave a comment about that okay until next time guys bye byebye
