Here is with his guest, Mary Trump, together to break down the latest on Trump and what may come next In Springfield. They're eating the dogs, the people that came in, they're eating the cats, they're eating, they're eating the pets of the people that live there. ABC News did reach out to the city manager there. Uh, he told us there had been no credible reports of specific claims of pets being harmed, injured, or abused by individuals within the immigrant community. All this, well, I've seen people on television. Let me just say here. This is the, The people on television say, my dog was taken and used for foods. I Think you talk about extreme. I'm, I'm, you know, I'm sure as a psychologist, you're familiar with this whole idea of authoritarian personalities and that arguably, according to Altmeyer anyway, 20% roughly of any, uh, population, any national population have authoritarian tendencies. Most are authoritarian followers, occasionally get authoritarian leaders. Um, what is, what, uh, a I'm, I'm curious your, your thoughts on that and b, what, how does that inform our politics and the role in our politics that your uncle has played and that the Republican Party has been playing over the last, arguably the last 40 years? As, as you know, starting with Nixon's Law and Order thing, as they've been taking more and more and more, uh, progressively more authoritarian positions, particularly with regard to, uh, you know, people of color, It's, it's entirely correct that approximately 20% of any population has authoritarian personality or authoritarian liens. And as you said, uh, that does not mean that you are, uh, want to become an authoritarian leader. It means that as a, you're more comfortable being a follower. You prefer, uh, the status quo. Change scares you. You like ho homogeneity. Um, but it's not a political, it doesn't mean you're more reactionary than anything else. So what I think has happened though is that the Republicans have gotten quite good at co-opting such people, and the Democrats haven't figured out how to, And I'm gonna actually do something really unusual, and I'm gonna invite you to attend one of Donald Trump's rallies. 'cause it's a really interesting thing to watch. And what you will also notice is that people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom. First, let me respond as to the rallies, please. She said people start leaving. People don't go to her rallies. There's no reason to go. And the people that do go, she's busing them in and paying them to be there and then showing them in a different light. So she can't talk about that. People don't leave my rallies. One of the most diabolical things Donald did was divide us, uh, during, at a time we most needed to be united. Now, authoritarian personalities like to be the us in an us versus them scenario. A kind, empathetic, smart leader would have been able to bring those people into the camp, so to speak, by saying, it's US America against this. Donald's on the other head because he needs division. He thrives on division, made it us maggot support, you know, Donald supporters that make America great again, crowd against people of color, people in blue states, Democrats. Uh, so, you know, it's not at all just because 20% of the population is authoritarian, is that not, they're not hopelessly, uh, entrenched in right-wing politics. We just need to figure out how to talk to them more effectively. What would be your suggestion to Democrats about how to talk to those Americans that, that 20% of Americans who really just want, you know, strong daddy or mommy in charge? Yeah, I, you know, that, that, that, that's a lot harder to do now, uh, because one that the Donald made it so clear that there, the only way for them to be considered viable was to support him wholeheartedly. We have Fox News, Fox News, uh, spreading his propaganda, spreading their own pop propaganda. Now, look, uh, make no mistake about it. Trump had a bad night. Uh, he rose the debate repeatedly when she baited him, um, something I'm sure his advisors had begged him not to do. Um, you know, in the first debate when Biden attacked him, he just kept his cool and kept going. Um, in this, in this debate, he rose to a debate. He, and we heard so many of the old grievances that, that we'd long thought that Trump had learned were not winners politically Mm-Hmm. And now they all were, you know, talking about how he didn't lose the election and all that. I mean, so I, my sense is that she came out of this in pretty good shape. Now, how long this will last and, and is, is, uh, is anybody's guess, but, um, for, for tonight at least, this was pretty much her night. You're saying She had A good night. I'm saying she certainly did. Um, we have this situation in which they're responding more to conspiracy theories, no matter how insane. These are the kind of elements of a national health insurance important to the American people. Governor Reagan, again, typically is against such a proposal. Governor, There you go again. When I hear your new ideas, I'm reminded of that ad. Where's the beef? You know, Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you know, Jack Kennedy In Springfield. They're eating the dogs. The people that came in, they're eating the cats. Wow. Wow. Wow, wow, wow, wow, Wow. He, he said it like he meant it. Like that's they're eating the dogs. Dogs. No. Did he really mean it that Ed your Kennedy, he thinks that's True because he watches it on Fox News. There isn't the dogs, Doesn't he know better? It's not a quick fix. I think the first most obvious thing Democrats need to do is make American, the Mayor, American people's lives better, and they need to act like they're in charge because they are. But the clock is ticking. Time is running out. You know, um, you, you were talking earlier about the incredible statistics, uh, regarding, or sorry, the data regarding what a small minority has veto power over the rest of us. Um, America is not a democracy. That's one of the reasons why the electoral college is another. And the filibuster is an, is the one that, that you refer to. I mean, the Democrats, if they want to make sure one, that American America, the American people's lives are better, and two, that America remains, or at least continues to have the potential to become a democracy. They need to do the most basic thing and get rid of the filibuster. And then we can, we'll see what happens. But, you know, until such time as, as they do that, I'm deeply afraid that we will never get to the point where we can start to educate people in a way that that is helpful to them. They've destroyed the economy, and all you have to do is look at a poll. The polls say 80 and 85, and even 90%, that the Trump economy was great, that their economy was terrible. Donald Trump has no plan for you. And when you look at his economic plan, it's all about tax breaks for the richest people. I am offering what I describe as an opportunity economy. She's Biden, you know, she's trying to get away from Biden. I don't know the gentleman. She says, clearly, I am not Joe Biden, and I am certainly not Donald Trump.
