hi I'm rich Rodriguez head football coach at West Virginia University and I'm pleased to be able to show you a little bit about our offensive of philosophy and a little bit about what we do in our offensive Run game uh this tape is going to deal with in particular our spread offense Run game with our inside runs [Music] [Applause] [Music] you know basically we have five basic offensive philosophy things that we try to cover with our entire football team regarding our schemes all right the first thing is we're going to try to stretch to feel both horizontally and vertically what I mean by that is we want to spread people out from sideline to sideline with our formations now we use about 25 different formations but in reality only four or five of our base formations um but we like to give multiple formations to try to stretch the field both horizontally and vertically and uh we'll see you'll see that as we demonstrate both uh in our Run game and in our passing game how we do that the second thing that we believe in and what we we kind of hold our hat to is we want to run with the numbers use the best angles and use the wide side of the field if possible and what we mean by numbers angles and grass means if they have a three-man side and a fourman side we're going to run it to a three-man side you know if we have a fourman side and a fiveman side we have a certain formation we're going to run to the fourman side so we want to run with the numbers the same thing is true in the past game obviously if they've got eight men in the Box you know the numbers are better to throw the ball on the perimeter so we're going to throw the football so that's what we mean about numbers angles means we'd rather run it to where we have easier angles to block in other words we'd rather run it to a one and a five technique as opposed to run it to a three and a five you know it's easier to block down on a one sometimes it is to reach on a three technique so we like the angles where we're blocking down and have a better angle for our young men to uh to be able to hold hold and sustain their block the third uh part of that faction is the grass what we mean by the grass is if everything is equal to the short side or to the wide side of the field we'd rather run it to the wide side of the field simply because we have more grass and more room to run you know usually you don't have everything equal but if we had to pick a priority it would be numbers are the most important thing run with the numbers where there's less people angles would be the second most important important thing and third thing is grass if everything is equal then let's go ahead and go to the wide side of field because it got more room all right the next thing of philosophies we talk about the numbers again run with the numbers throw the numbers and we try to hold to this as much as possible you know a lot of teams will stem and move and try to fudge with your numbers if they know you got eight in a box you're going to throw it every time and things of that nature you know what we try to do in our Run game and you'll see this later on in the tape is that we'll even sometimes run against the number numbers and we've been pretty pleased that we have be able to do that with success but our base philosophy is if they got too many guys in the Box we got to throw it or run it on the perimeter that's what that means the LA another phase of our offense is we try to do is control the tempo well we're a no huddle team and sometimes our no huddle is a very fast pace sometimes it's a slower control pace and sometimes it's in between what we have found out by controlling the tempo on offense we've been able eliminate some people from substitution in certain situations we've been able to make conditioning a factor and we've also been able to eliminate some certain disguises and Stems that the defense will do against us we want to have people line up and what we see is what we get by controlling the temple on offense and using no huddle not just a regular no huddle but sometimes a very fast no huddle are we're able to accomplish some of those things the other thing we talk about and you'll see a good bit on this tape is is our ability to use the shotgun to get an extra Blocker on just about every run we have in particular the inside runs all right we do not block the backside defensive end or the backside Defender and the quarterback in a sense is blocking him by reading him before the handoff and the shotgun gives us that ability as coach tricket and Coach McGee on another tape will explain to you about because a quarterback has time and distance before he has to hand it off to determine where that end is going to crash or whether he's going to box the quarterback in so using the shotgun obviously helps us and has advantages in a passing game because of vision timing and things of that nature but in particular it's helped us more throughout the years in the in the Run game because the ability of the quarterback to read the defensive end and determine whether to hand it off or he needs to keep it on a naked bootleg so those are some of the things we try to do with our offensive philosophy we try to adhere to with that [Music] moving on and what we want to talk about is is a couple things in our spread offense is the inside Run game so we're going to talk about all the particulars of our Zone play which for us this past year uh finish and second in the country and offense our number one running play is the Zone our second play that we run out of our spread offense that has had great success is our inside trap you know without going all particulars of the scheme the Zone play for us is a catchall because we feel in our Zone Play No Matter What formation we run it out of if we're going to run it out four wide receivers that being the quarterback and this being the what we call the super back or the one back uh when we run out of a spread team we're easily be able to identify where the Defenders are at and and for us if we see a free safety in the middle of the field we know we're going to have numbers to run a Zone play or run a trap play now we tell our quarterbacks and our coaching staff that we read everything from the safety down even for our Run game so if we see a free safety in the middle of the field right we know they're going to get some type of 3D with six in a box it could be a a manfree it could be three deep it could be some kind of matchup coverage but we're basically going to see with a free safety middle of the field six in a box we feel we have numbers to run with six in a box even if we're spread in our normal spread formations because we don't have just five blockers 1 2 3 four five we count the quarterback as I mentioned in gun as a sixth blocker so if we're going to run the zone to the left and again we'll talk about the schemes in particular little bit later we're not worried about blocking the backside end because the quarterback will read him so the quarterback's eyes is on the backside end if the end would happen to crash well the quarterback would simply keep the ball and run on a naked uh bootleg if the end is up the field and he boxes the quarterback in in a sense he's eliminating himself from the play that leaves them five Defenders and we've got five blockers so we have numbers as long as you have a middle safety in the field we're going to have numbers to run the football if the safety's on the hash the first thing we look for to see if there's another safety on the other hash which generally there is in that case that leaves five in a box all with five in a box we know we only have to block four cuz we're again we're not going to block the backside in whether it's a Zone play or trap play we're not going to block the backside in by doing that now we have them outnumbered 1 2 3 4 5 to four all right now we should have a big play even if they play a quarters look where the safties are involved in run support our philosophy is the safety has to make a tackle coming downhill and our backs at least going to have an opportunity to make five or six yards to get the second level and make the safeties make the tackle so we don't see this as much because we've had success in Run game but we know two safeties deep we're going to have numbers to run single safety deep we still got numbers to run if they bring them all down and put everybody in the Box both safeties all right now we have to do something on the perimeter run or we got to throw the football so that's why we read everything from the safety down once we see a middle safety then it kind of not only does it tell us the coverage most of the time but also tells us how many people they have in the Box what we determine as the box is anything from The Tackle two to three yards outside the both tackles and about six to seven yards deep that for us is what we consider in the box if they outnumbers us with seven guys in the box then we have to go to a perimeter run or a throw some kind of quick game passing game what have you if there's six guys in the Box all right no matter what run we have trap zone what have you we feel we have numbers to run we should be okay so the safties help determine us who's in a box and then we we adjust accordingly one of the most important things when you run or spread offense uh in particularly an offense like ours uh that Prides itself on a spread running game is the is the location of your formation and how you space your wide receivers out for us in the Run game in particular when we use what we call RAM and line formation three wides with a tight end RX receiver our s is 5 yards from the sidelines U You by using five yards we have enough room for him in case we want to throw a quick out or something to him to the perimeter but he's spread out enough that the corner has to be honest to play out over top of him our wide receiver to the field which we call a z and we line him up on the bottom of the numbers all right just about every play uh in particular if we Sprint out a run he's at Bob numbers sometimes if we're going to throw the football uh down the field we'll move him in a little bit but generally his base alignment is the bottom of the numbers which is about seven yards from the sidelines our slot receiver the wide receiver to the strong side basically splits the difference between the outside receiver and the tight in our alignment stances they're all they're all the guards are down in the three-point stance our tackles are in a two-point stance unless they're covered by a tight end if a tight end is next to a tackle then he's down in a three-point stance as well we feel that gives us our guards and our guys that are down in a power type of set it gives our openend tackle uh a comfortable set in case he gets a speed rusher off the edge if we happen to go um with a four wide receiver set then our H what we call our H receiver basically splits the difference between the near tackle and the outside receiver uh spacing is very important for us and again one of our philosophies is spread the field both horizontally and vertically and by spreading the field horizontally with our formations we get get what we want as far as recognizing the defenses our rules and our basic rules for our slot receivers is they should never be any closer than five or six yards between the nearest offensive player so if we happen to go a trips formation we put our y right here and our H right there in the trips formation we're going to have five or six yards between the Y and the tackle five or six yards between the H and the Y five or six yards between the Z and the H so our spacing is good that way no not one guy can cover two we want them to have to match guy head up on every one of our offensive players you know as a general rule in our philosophy sometimes running the trips open is better than us than running a double set really depends on how teams play us defensively You by going sometimes by going to a trip set whether it's trips open or with a tight end trips it forces a defense to pull or adjust toward the trip side and give us numbers to the weak side and one of the first things we look for again just putting X's up here if they've got four on one side three on the other we're going to run to the three- man side so go getting into a trips formation whether trips open again or tight end trips over all right we can sometimes dictate to them that they have to put more people over here to the trip side one of the other things we we talk about and when we look at is when we go to a trips formation all right we want to see if our ex receiver who's usually one of our better receivers is left one-on-one with a cornerback if he's left one-on-one over here with a cornerback there's two things we like to do one is a perimeter or speed option run to that side or two is a quick game or some type of quick passing game over to our x and by doing that we usually force people to play a Willie linebacker or a flat Defender over here when they do that now generally gives us numbers to run back over here to the strong side so by running a Trip's formation sometimes we can dictate we have numbers to the strong side as well if our X can be effective and oneon-one over here again on the Zone if we run it out of the shotgun from an open side we're going to read the end whether it's a trap for his own play as I mentioned earlier that gives us an extra Defender if we want to block the end and go under Center we'll put a tight end in the game to the back side by putting a tight end in the game the backside the tight end will now blocked in the quarterback will hand off and he'll nak it away from it so and this is for us to change multiple formations if we want to go under Center there are certain times if if if you're struggling with a shotgun snap if the conditions are wet and you can't snap it very well or to just give them a different look they had to prepare for we'll still run the Zone we'll still run the Trap we'll still run some of our inside runs out of different formations with a tight end to the backside and he in a sense is the guy that blocks the backside in and we'll still run the same schemes uh the way we did earlier out of the shotgun and a quarterback will always naked or bootleg away from the zone or away from the trap next on the tape Coach Rick tricket who is our assistant head coach and our offensive line coach uh will explain our inside running plays our Zone play which has been our most effective play in our trap play which again we run both under Center and in a shotgun all right thank you coach Rodriguez uh my name is Rick tricket I'm the assistant head coach offensive line coach here at West Virginia and uh we're going to talk a little bit about the Zone play try to give you some coaching points on our Zone play and uh and uh and then our trap later on all right our Zone play basically we start with it out of a rip and Liz formation out of our four wide formation and I'm going to block it for you and I'm going to go over an odd front then I'm going to go over an even front and I'm going to show you our keys and what we're looking for obviously against odd defense you have your overhang things which can create a problem they want to play them in or they get in that gray area right there where they're trying to Sugar you in and out and create situation where you know you have a mismatch and they have one more man and you can block if we read that and that becomes a problem then we'll fake The Zone throw our quick screen out here to the back if he's up here on the line we've got the Zone plate called we'll throw our quick screen to the back and hit it and get it and just uh let them try to recover from that but if everything's equal and this backer is out in coverage and we feel good about him being out there our running back is back here he's going to come across on the Zone play take the hand off he is going to stretch at two good steps he's going to take good two good steps past the quarterback and he's going to press the line of scrimmage pressing the heels of that tackle he's going to press the heels of that tackle up front we're using what we call a stretch Technique we do a stretch step we stretch step and the tackle's coming off blocking the outside breast to armpit of that five technique tackle we've got a five technique tackle the running back is reading one to two so we're stretching working outside breast armpit this guard is also going to use a stretch technique stretch step come up that stretch step if you can see it here is more or less it's just a stretch right here it's just a flat lateral step that drops back so we're using a stretch step coming reading that if one is out the guard will continue on to work for the outside breast armpit of that line backer if one Slants in obviously if one Slants in then the guard hooks it up and the tackle continues on to work the outside breast armpit of the linebacker so if one would go in then the ball is going outside the wide receiver has to make the block the ball goes outside if one works out the ball's coming inside all right the linebacker one's out guards up on the linebacker if I have two hooked if I have two hooked the ball is in the B Gap the ball will hit and run the B Gap if we come out and one is out and I'm stretching and coming off and two's running hard I hooked up but two's running real hard stretching it right there and the ball is going to press the heels of the tackle and the ball now is going to go behind two it's going to go behind two the backside guard is using the stretch reading the near knee of that nose guard that near knee goes away then the guard's climbing for the playside number if we've got an odd front we work 18inch cut off back here on the backside five technique depending on where the wheel backer is if the wheel backer is on the line of scrimmage will lock it down if the wheel linebacker would be stacked and we work what we call sift technique we're coming through if he's out we'll continue on and try to get the Overflow on the linebacker so basically against odd front here if he pinches we're hooking it up off on the backer balls outside if one stretches and runs with the outside breast armpit one's running one's out balls inside if two's hooked balls in the B Gap if two's running the ball's coming back behind two that kind of gives you a little bit of idea how we're working the basic things off the odd front now if we get an odd front like Virginia plays and they're playing two Gap technique has head up and they're two gapping us all the way across the board and Virginia did a pretty good job of it we may have a tight end in the ball game all right if they're too gapping and I'm going to still take my stretch step work outside breast armpit now this guard's job right now if that guy stays head up and doesn't move this guard's job is to make him a five technique if that guy's playing that tackle square up he comes off he's playing that tackle Square to Square and that back does doesn't have a read that guard's job is to shove that five technique out and make him shove the four technique out excuse me and make him a five technique and then continue on and lock up on the backer if the four Slants down inside hard then it's just like it was before then the tackle off onto the backer we're hooking it up the back's coming across catches hand off two steps pressing the heels of the tackle that that's if we have a nine technique with the tight end he's on his own he has a nine technique manto man all right we want this running back to get that read as quick as possible he has to make me right that running back has to make this offensive tackle right so we want him to get a read real quick we want that five out or we want that five in right there and then then we work the same back here we're stretching it ripping it stretching reading near knee if I've got two hooked Ball's coming inside if two's running hard Ball's coming behind two we'll work to cut off backside on the 18in cut off now when we're in the shotgun and if we want to read this guy and they're playing it they're playing that whe backer and we know we're reading it at that week in the game plan when we're in the gun then this tackle will just stretch come through and work for that whe backer if he closes hard he's chasing it down then the quarterback will pull the ball and we'll run the naked or run the quarterback keep off of it but if it's a 50 front an odd front and the backer on the line then I'm going to lock it down and stay on another thing against odd front if you come up and you work your game plan you've got a head up six technique got a two Gap head up they're two gapping backers are a little bit depth you can read it and the tight end now gives me a six call the tight end now is telling me this guy's excuse me tightened up he's not a nine technique anymore he's tightened up he's come to a six technique or or something's up usually the saf is working down a little bit the free may be cheated over they may be coming with a full slant back bring it uh to the weak side if we get this we make a call we can be in the one back under or in the gun till the tail back is stretching cross over on his second step start rolling it downhill pressing the heels of the tackle the quarterback's going to bring the ball back to him on the Zone if I get a six call from that tight end now we make a call where we're bringing it all three man Zone to the front side now the tight end's tight end with he's going to work outside breast armpit The Tackle is going to stretch that end closes I'm hooking outside number the guard's going to stretch pick up the four the tight end will work off to get to the backer and now one's in one's in balls outside the back has to read that he has to read that and the outside backer coming inside the ball bounce we had that in the bowl game happened to us a couple times there and the kids did a good job of picking it up we've got the the scoop on the backside locking it down so that's our three-man Zone on side if we get a head up four with a six technique tackle again go back for coaching point if we get a head up four with a nine technique defensive outside backer the zone is working between these two guys the tight end's off on his own he's man he's man make sure you coach that tight end to really stretch and still also work the outside breast the armpit and try to get this nine technique to widen we didn't do a real good job of that in the bowl game we took a stretch step and what we were doing we were stretch stepping and we were trying to turn that nine technique out from inside out we were trying to turn him out from inside out he hung ered down played hard was squeezing the hole we had a good hole we was coming across we had a good hole in here we had this thing hooked up but he kept squeezing it down we couldn't get the ball through so make sure you teach that guy to stretch work the outside breast get him run he has contained make him play contain open your hole up so because nine times out of 10 if you've got a good offenseive tackle and they want to two Gap you you should have that reached if you're playing people that run the odd stack defense they'll come and run the odd stack like our people are running this Center cannot use it we're still going stretch work outside breast armpit stretch the B Gap working one to two plant this Center cannot use the normal technique that he used against odd front this Center cannot stretch rip and do his normal scoop that you would against the 50 defense with the backer backside we have changed this technique this T this Center has to do what we call a zip technique he has to snap the ball and zip it on side one two three so if you can see me there on a demonstration that Center wants to take and he wants a snap he wants a shuffle one two three and square that thing right there to get over in this Gap to mirror that Mike linebacker the backside guard an 18in split he's got a stretch and he's got to cut that nose guard he's got to cut that nose guard we got to stretch get the backside backer headed towards the middle linebacker and now once that Center gets over here as in this position where we want him we can pick up all the cross blitzes that they run we can pick up the back of fires that they run and puts us a lot more Square on the line of scrimmage and and puts us on these people gives us a chance to lock it down and pick up all the games that they're going to play in there if they want to stay in the odd stack and I try to do this right here and I do this right here I've got a gap right there that I can't cover that linebacker is going to come over here and they're going to cheat him they're going to blow him through the outside shoulder of that guard that guard's working up to pick up the backside backer that Center's there and you're going to get blew up in the hole so this Center has to be able to snap and zip that thing over and cover this front side a gap and help pick that up and that's one thing we've learned by going against our defense for two years that you have to do that technique with the center to get over there cuz basically it's a 33 defense and all they're really trying to do is to end up back in that that's what they're basically trying to do they're trying to run one guy through here to get him to be a three technique or two technique player you got the five there run that middle backer and get him over here and end up in a 40 Man front so that's that's some of the things that you need to do up front to help yourself cover yourself on that zone play with the with the odd stack defense again our running back is coming across on his path taking the hand off taking two good steps past the quarterback chasing the heels of the tackle pressing the line of scrimmage his read again is one to two one to two on this in the even front this tackle is going to stretch and work the outside breast the arm pit of that tackle now a little foot note up here on the side a lot of of times that guy may be a lot wider in in a 40 look he may be angled he may be down however they want to play it we're going to take that tackle and we're going to stretch that thing now The Wider he is I'm going to have to do a little bit more of a drop step to get my angle to get that guy so the wider he is the deeper the drop so the wider he is I'm going have to take a drop step and come now I'm coming for the outside breast armpit but that tackle was using a heavy inside hand hand I'm using a heavy inside hand what I'm talking about is I'm coming off I'm going to still try to get my head on his outside breast armpit and I'm locking up but I'm locking up inside him with my left hand if I'm the right tackle I'm drop stepping I'm locking up my left hand and if he runs up field then I'm going to take him and torque him outside and get the thing if he wants to run up field then I'm going to take him and torque him outside and put him where he wants to go a lot of times this guy once he sees me drop and stretch he'll want to come inside on the inside slant they may have a call where they've come got him coming inside on the inside slant when he's doing that if I drop to go he comes in I'm going to catch him hook up lock up and try to keep him from penetrating the line of scrimmage the best I can cuz if he's slanting inside and I can hook it up then one's in the ball ought to be outside anyway if the back makes me right so that's a little bit of a tech Technique we use the tackle will be up in the two-point stance like this if he has no tight end beside him he'll take a step drop step drop step come working outside breast armpit if the guy widens we're going to hook up take our hands press him out if the guy starts to slant in we're going to try to redirect hook him up try to get down the middle of him inside hand and keep him off the line of scrimmage all right here it's just your typical we're going to take a little stretch step we t a tboard step right foot we're going to make contact left foot left shoulder so that guard is right there he's going to right foot Jack him up get him up it's his job to get this guy jacked up to center now with our Lin we have our linan off the ball we're lined up pretty deep on the center so now the center being up further than the guards he's going to have to snap the football and take a pretty good drop step he's going to take a pretty good drop step to get his angle to run in underneath that guard and try to help him on the double with the one technique so the center's going to drop step come we're going to go right foot left foot Jack him up and then once we get him lit up it's a guard's job whoever's lined up he's lined up on the guard it's a guard's job to get him up then once I feel my Center come then I'm off on a skape move to to get that back so basically what that guard will do is he's going to step short step Here Right Foot Right Foot left foot and Jack him up I want to hit same foot same shoulder boom Jack him up same foot same shoulder when I feel my Center com and hook up then I'm off on a skate move that guard will kind of come off right now on a skate move space that the linebacker flowing in the backs doing a good job of stretching the line of scrimmage here and not heading downfield too quick if he's coming cross two good Steps A lot of times that linebacker will hang that allows me to come off shuffle stay in square as long as I can hook up and try to take the linebacker outside because again the back's reading if one's out the ball's going into B Gap if two's hooked up the ball will stick right there now if the linebacker if I step here and the linebacker plugs quick I got to come off and try to get in the middle of him working to the outside breast armpit and the ball will go out that way so the the ball's going to cut off the linebacker accordingly all right if we stretch it and hook up one's out one's out Ball's coming back in we're hooked up right here but two's pressing as hard I mean he's pushing the guard he's pushing the center and two's over here and the and the B gap's Closing and two's running hard then the cor the running back will now take the ball and cut back behind two we've got a slip back here where we're stretching ripping it going towards the middle linebacker to intersect I'm up in the two-point stance I stretch come through and this is a cut block right here this is a cut block I like to stretch and run it I want to get on this guy try to I coach him to get at least even I don't you'll get in the habit they'll want to get right here if you tell them make cut and they're going to start throwing before they get to the man and they'll not this is a better athlete than what you've got going after him so I want him to to get even and then we can cut but these are cut blocks backside again the quarterback will read the end if the end closes hard and chasing we will pull the ball if the end plays it up field for the naked we hand the football off right there wide outs are blocking on the perimeter and that's a must we make our white outs block if they don't want to block they don't get a play all right if we come back and we got one reached and one's out Ball's coming back into the B Gap we're hooked up on Two And two's fighting like heck coming across that guard's face and pushing it right there now the ball will wind behind two and make the play Same technique by a tackle but WID The Wider is the deeper the drop working outside breast armpit using the same techniques we talked about a while ago one's out we're hooking up taking one out back comes across take the hand off stretch two good steps past the center press the heels of the tackle reading one the guard now the only thing this guard has to do he has to stretch and tear the outside half of that guard off that's all we're telling that guard to do we want to take a stretch step and you just come and tear the outside half of this golf you rip him and take him you don't have to worry about anything the center again is going to take a good drop step run his angle if the two pinches if the three technique or the two number two read pinches the center will hook him up and the guard will continue on and lock up on the backer because if one's out and twoos in the ball is going into B Gap the ball will go into the B Gap all right if one's out and we reach and two's out we hooked up and two's out or two's uh two's running like heck then the back's going to get the ball and he's going to cut it behind two he's going to cut it behind two now if he cuts it behind two where they get in trouble on defense a lot of time that guy will run like heck and that linebacker will still play out and that guard comes and I get that linebacker pinned out they they they're relying on these guys backside that happened in the game four course this past year a team was running this front and we kept getting this block right here we kept getting that cut off block right there and our backs came and they jump cut that thing and brought it back inside our backs jump cut brought that ball back inside these two these three were out of the game they were not a factor so now they're telling this backside linebacker you got to make the play where our tackle did a real good job of stretching and falling and the linebacker was in the hole to make the play but but we just followed him down and nailed him and took him that way and our back took the ball back here I think we ran for 560 something yards that day because we just we just kept taking the ball 540 some yards we just kept taking the ball and we kept getting this one technique cut off they had no defense if one is out and I hook up and two starts running two starts running on that reach he's not getting reached we're up and we nail the backer then the balls got to cut behind cut behind the guard on the two block again the most important block on the play is this backside cut off by the one technique he has the be most important block and that way especially in high school I'm going to sell these kids the point of attack we're running this play but you are the most important guy you and you have to make those two blocks for us to have a play if they play their defense right right even though they played it right on the front side if the back's tied in with me and read trust these reads and brings it back now we become the most two most important blocks in the scheme cutting off the one cutting off the backer and opening up the backside AAP if we line up right here we go a one technique a three technique here a gap backer B Gap backer and now we just bring that seven technique in on that tie in and put the safety out here okay we still want to run it it changes nothing for me over here on the offensive side it's just like the tight end one there now the seven technique may be a little wider I am now down down in a three-point stance if I don't have a tight end lined up beside me I'm up so our four guys out of our five will be down if I have a tight end line up beside me if we put two tights in the ball game then they move him to seven and I'm down so that's how we we were going to our formations so our kids up front they don't have to really learn the formations I'm a tackle I have a tight end lined up beside me I'm down I'm a tackle I have a tight end no tight end lined up beside me I'm up in the two point the middle three are down all the time third and 18 were down we will let them up every now and then the two-minute offense if they want to but they feel so much comfortable down most of the time they stay down all right if we get this look right here then this is no nothing more different than it the tight end is just going to block out on the safety and now the same thing it's probably a little bit wider CU it's a seven technique I'm going to take a deep drop again working outside breast armpit on two working outside breast armpit on two everybody else in here right foot left foot Jack him up Center drop take him over off to the backer working the slip back here with the cut so it changed nothing for me of what it was in ripping lies it changed nothing if you took that tight end and strong safety out of the game that's RI and Liz for me that's just exactly how we blocked the Ripp and Liz if I put the tight end back in there with the seven technique and the safety the tight end got the safety everything stays the same for me so that's how we make our tight end adjustments on this front now what you will run into and we'll probably see this early the most eight man front teams we going to line that guy up a lot of times you have a three technique with it and we get that two Gap slant guy right there and they're going to either cheat the safety in if they do that a lot of times they'll fudge that linebacker you just have to look at film we're lucky enough to have it where we we can break all the this stunt down every time and hunt it up and try to find a key there that helps us pick up something that they're doing that lets us know that's coming again if we feel that this stunt is coming we do not change a tight end he's still out there but we will make a call in here between us three that I think this stunts coming I think the two Gap stunts coming out of one I think it's coming out of one so if it's coming out of one we know right now the ball is going to hit right there the ball is going to hit right there what happens is if you stay man on this thing if this tackle stretches to work outside breast the armpit and that guy pinches and he wheels back your guard's going to get picked your guard's going to get picked off because the center's going to end up here but this two Gap slander is going to pick that and your linebacker is going to be running free the linebacker will be running free so we make a call to let that guard know hey I think it's on I think the pinch is on I'm making a call to that guard now that guard will take a good hard stretch he'll take a good hard stretch open up and that pinches now that guard is going to hook this up the guard's going to hook this up the tackle is going to take his drop work outside breast armpit as soon as he reads at number one coming inside he's going to squeeze it off tight come up and he'll pick up the linebacker so now we've got one hooked up here with the guard we've got two hooked up with the center we got the back playside backer hooked up with the tight end and this is a beautiful sight when that back takes that thing goes in there untouched you may came come up and your kids not sure most of them want to cover their butts anyway and that tackle is not sure but he thinks it's coming and he makes the call whatever your call is I'm not going to tell you my call but he makes the call to bring the guard over he makes a call to bring the guard over he thinks the Slants on and we're working the three man thing and all of a sudden the tackle drops that reaches outside breast armpit and it's not the end plays there and I've got him hooked now this guard is kind of going to be in a little bit of shaky land there especially if there three techniques coming off the football penetrate so as soon as that guard stretches and reads that it's not coming then he needs to hook this thing back up pretty quick he needs to hook his thing back up and get square and try to work back off on the linebacker you probably have to spend a little bit more time on that then you do with the pinch and picking that up because this will happen to you a good bit if a kid gets antsy out there and thinks the things coming thinks the Slants coming makes the call and it's not again the wi out's blocking on the corner Corner if we're back here cutting it working it the back's got to be that if the corners are real real deep then you can come in here and crack on the safety if the safeties are down and they playing the safety down a lot come in here and crack on the safety and get him the tighter that safety there's not very much there's not hardly any more push crack right now you're lucky if you can go right now and get on him right now if they keep wanting to bite then you got to put your play action pass in where you fake that pull it off set it take it on through the middle that'll tighten them up a little bit there all right now we're going to get into our trap play and again I will block it against the odd odd stack an even front for you and we always run the trap out of the shotgun even if we're too tight a set or whatever we like to run it out of the gun if we get an odd front especially people playing wide fives on us or we get a clean release into the inside backer we take a verer release we work what we call apacks we're working to the inside number of that linebacker with our head on the inside number the traditional double team Center going to snap Jack him up head on the backside number stretch working the hip off to the backside linebacker pressing it driving the double team Center's alert for the backside run through if we got a pure odd look up here let's say they dropped the backer back however they want to place if they dro the backer back then we're locking down here pulling and trapping into the line of scrimmage tra to five technique the back right now is taken off on a 45° angle downhill at the playside cheek of the of the center so if it's over here on the right side of our trap the back will take off at a 45° downhill step 45° angle downhill Step at the cheek of the play sides cheek of the center the quarterback will take it and step with his play side foot forward and hand the ball to the running back the back wants to hit it and find that Apex if I've got this guy Apex we want to break off if the Apex is Flowing he wants to break off there if I've got him hooked up he wants to head north and south with it blocking outside here on the parameter now we got the ver release and try to get onto that linebacker hoping he has contained we're going to inside foot drive now we've got the what we call good split but we're going to tboard and run this thing Square we're going to run that track Square for that middle backer we're going to stretch come inside and pick off this backer we're going to pull trap into the line of scrimmage to get to five technique back's headed there quarterback will read this if the end closes hard we're pulling it taking the ball outside let's just say we're in Ace a lot of times those ends you getting four wides and you play eight-man front you play a team that runs a eight man front and his tackle goes inside the Apex the linebacker he goes inside the Apex the linebacker and they're bringing them ends off we've played a couple people that this backside end's made that play that backside end will make that play so our cure for that if that's a problem we can do two things we can either read it we'll read it and pull it or we'll go two tights in the a set now we get the two tights in the ball game and make this seven technique play and now we block back we influence block out work that out to the safety pulling trap Apex and cut that backside end off and it lets us get clean into the hole finding the Apex on the linebacker the biggest coaching point the center this is easy drop step back head via the neck guard pull and trap into the line of scrimmage quick Show Pass influence block out inside Apex the inside number that linebacker which he's got a clean shot the playside tackle that has the three technique down guy is a guy has to hump it now this guy he's got the toughest block he's got to come he's got a Olay we we we'll do an Olay technique we'll come off if that guy's there we'll actually swim it like a defensive line we'll reach grab back of the high end swim it around however we got to do to get in here to get Apex on that Lineback to get the Apex on that linebacker which makes it tough and a lot of people know that you want to trap the three technique so what they do to help that linebacker out is they'll really widen that three technique over there to that side snug it down a little bit here put that linebacker really make him an AAP player if we get that guy play us real real wide real real wide then we'll make a call where now we're going to stretch and reach block that three we'll reach block that three now we'll block out on these two we'll block back now we'll wrap and trap the backer hit the seam stick it Apex back here if they want to widen that three we'll let them play into our hands we'll do that wrap it around now we trap the backer and once we trap the backer then we hit it and get it and still stick it up in there and go with it so they can pick their poison they may get us early once or twice if that backer's wide and giving us problems in there then we we're we're going to we're going to fold hold it and hard reach at three technique and get him [Music] running all right some coaching points that we want to go over once you've already read saw the tape and and you know you want to go out and coaches with your players is the steps I'm going to take the footwork I'm going to take to combo this one technique off to that backer first of all if I'm the guard and I'm down in my stance and the guy on one technique I want to take just a short power step right here we call it a tboard step I'm stepping up and then I want to drive straight back into this guy with my left foot left shoulder and it's my job to get this guy up I want to Jack him up so I go left right jack him up left forearm flipper get him up keeping my outside hand free and once I feel the center come off and I'll go over the center steps here in a minute once I feel the center come off onto the one technique then I want to skate shoulder square and hook up on the linebacker if I'm the center and I'm uncovered or got a weak shade on me I know the guards behind me the one technique's there I'm going to snap the football and take a deep drop and then run my track on this angle to get my head acrossed and try to take this one technique off the guard I want to take the one technique off the guard help the guard pop off and get so that Center steps he's going to snap drop step open that hip come now crossed working running the angle if I'm the guard and I have a three technique on the bottom diagram and I have a three technique then I'm going to be here all I'm doing all I'm responsible for now is taking that stretch step coming and tearing the outside half of this guy off if he stays and I get him reached the back's going to make me right I'm working outside hands strong pressing and going if I'm the guard and I stretch and the three technique Slants I squeeze it off tight get my shoulders Back Square and find the linebacker working the him to get my head on his playside number that's why the center if he got a three technique we teach him to always expect the pinch that's the first guy that can get to you so the center is going to snap drop three techniques pinching I'm working my head across him trying to take him and turn him down inside and hook him up right there and put the guard onto the backer those are a couple little coing points that we felt like may help you when you go to teaching it with the inside zone or outside Zone on the stretch play I appreciate your attention and watching this tape uh talking about the West Virginia spread offense in inside run plays The Zone and the trap [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] oh [Music]
