How Houston ISD is faring amid school closures due to devastating storm

Their schools are still not ready because of last week's storms. One of the hardest hit campuses is Sinclair Elementary School in the northwest side of town. Rachel Turner's there live with us this morning to show us the recovery efforts. Rachel. >> and Sophia, good morning. This is one of 54 campuses that will be closed today because of that storm damage and want to show you what it looks like this morning. You can see several trees that work toppled on top of looks like playground equipment. And we know that some of the trees also fell on top. The portable classrooms. Now, let me show you what it looked like over the weekend. Crews have made major improvements to this area. They've been working around the clock to repair the damage. Superintendent Mike Miles gave us a tour of the campus were trees fell on top of portable classrooms and damaged other buildings. Hisd is working with CenterPoint Energy and local officials to get students back in the classroom. He also spoke about plans to transfer students from the hardest hit schools to another campus. >> If we don't have power where where we're going to look at the situation, if it's easy to move for the kids at one school to another, they will do that. Most likely if a school does not have power will probably have to close that school. I think it's safe to say, though. >> Some kids probably 100 kids. We'll have to be transported. Parents will have to take them to a different building, a different school. Our school close to sit here. we'll find a school that has space. >> And on top of the school trying to get back on track. I want to show you the neighborhood that's right across the street. You can see damage to roofs. You can see trees still on the ground. So people in this community are also waiting until the power is restored. However, kids who go to this school who will need breakfast and lunch starting at 7 o'clock this morning, the school is going to be providing breakfast and lunch will be served at 11 o'clock for students who need it.
