Joey Bosa On Jesse Minter’s Defense | LA Chargers

what are your thoughts on the defensive game uh it's great um picking it up quick uh not playing Sam which helps I don't have to worry about too many of the dropping schemes right now um but yeah I'm really enjoying it I think uh coach Jesse is doing a great job explaining everything um I think he's a really smart guy he he obviously has a really good plan in place um we'll obviously see how it how it plays out down the road but um I just I'm really loving how everything's going so far I think um the staff is just great uh I mean I really look forward actually to going to meetings and and hearing what what Coach Harbaugh has to say every day um it's always something something interesting with him um so yeah it's it's been a great start um you you know one of the greatest players play the game and all that how much pressure do you put on you yeah yeah uh how much pressure do you put on yourself when you come out on that field when every Play Everybody expects you to make a um yeah I think I've always been my my own toughest critic which helps um you know sometimes I can be overly critical of myself um even today as an example I got a little frustrated with with how I'm russan but it's it's every year um you come here it's first few days you're Rusty and you got to kind of get back in the swing of everything with a pass rush timing and and your moves and your hands and all that but um it it's easy when you know you have a great staff around you you have a a lot of great guys and you have that extra motivation to just not only uh perform well for yourself but also not let you let uh the man beside you down and and want to perform well for them so it's obviously really early and I like how I'm feeling physically first of all is is pretty much the the most important thing right now um coaches are taking really good care of us they have a really good plan to make sure we ramp up the right way and and hit our stride at the right time but um I'm I'm pretty confident in myself that that my best years are still ahead of me um I think I I I still have a few more few more years of my physical prime left so I I think that combined with you know my experience and and all the things I've been through can uh really help me you know hopefully reach that next level which I think I've had some great years but I I think um I've definitely left some there's always a slight dip I think through throughout my years that I think I can uh improve on and um I know stats are important and all that but I think if I just continue working the way I am all that will will handle itself mention drop coverage was that did you ask the coaching no I feel good about it because I didn't ask so they're just like oh you don't want them to learn Sam I'm like okay not going to fight fight on it no but there we we just haven't put some of the plays in yet and nickel and stuff I'm still going to have to drop but it's it's all intentional and part of a bigger plan to uh put the guys in the right position and obviously I'm totally good with with doing anything they ask me um I think the main thing that they want from our Edge guys is to you know go forward and get to the passer and if dropping and helping in coverage will will benefit that then uh we're all we're all happy to do it you prev training camp has sort of been a Duo during those special teams period working on your moves and stuff it seems like you had a third now in Bud the for the brain dress like what what's it been like having a third person thereally in those moments yeah IAL I mean I was talking to Bud today just about how great our room is we uh I mean me and KH aren't here probably we'd have Bud and Tulia starters so we're pretty much playing out there with four starters and then that's not mentioning all all the great backups we have behind them whether it's Chris Drew all the new guys um I think we have a stacked room and we all compliment Each Other Well I think Bud's a very different rusher than I am I'm a different rusher than khil is so we could all pick each other's brains and and learn things from each other I mean Bud's been doing it for 10 years already and um he obviously learn a lot throughout that time so he's a huge addition I think to the team Joey when it comes to tul Le just what areas have you seen him grow from you know where he was at last year yeah um I mean he came in doing all the right things I've said it a bunch of times that he uh he really impressed me as a rookie um coming in knowing known The Playbook front to back perfectly hardly ever making any any mistakes and even last year when he was on the field we felt uh totally confident in him to do the right thing and not only execute the plays but also make plays and make uh really impactful plays um he's a he's a great player and he's just getting better physically mentally and I think he loves to learn and he's not afraid to ask questions and learn from the older guys like me C and Bud so um sky's the limit for him um uh yeah I think he's like I said he's a starter quality out there as a backup so having two guys like that where you can sub them in and feel like there's no drop off in in uh skill uh it's a huge it's huge for us are are you motivated by the how and took Les come back this year you talk about um do any of those factors extra location for you this season yeah I mean there's few ways you could think about it um obviously it's been tough tough for the team tough um tough for me going through some of these injuries especially last year I mean both years with the groin and then last year a million little things that kind of added up and you know it's really stressful but um you could really look at it as a positive where mileage wise I really didn't take too big of a beating over the last two years my groin is fully recovered feeling better probably than it ever has my hips and everything feeling great um so yeah I try to look at it like that that um didn't really take too much of a beating over the last two years which kind of adds up a lot especially going into year nine so I feel confident um about how I'm feeling physically and um I guess yeah I think I've been not forgotten uh not around here but maybe some people have forgotten kind of uh the player I can be and you know I've always enjoyed proving people wrong whoever that is um obviously that's not you know the main driver but you know I have felt a bit more of uh you know motivation this offseason to really get back and and make a big impact said crazy stuff there any out to you um it's it's CRA it's crazy may not be the right word I think he just has a really interesting perspective on a lot of things um Scott Matt lock has been jotting down all of his LOL moments is how he wrote it on the paper which there's a lot of them he's uh he's just a funny guy and he he has a great perspective on life and football so it's just really interesting uh coming in the meetings and we're like what's he going to say today what whatever it is it's and it's not nonsense it's all uh really relevant to what we're all going through and and to our goals and and everything like that so he's uh he's a he's a great coach and I just I really couldn't be happier to have him here thank you Joey you and your brother Nick had such a you know great relationship how much do you guys kind of motivate each other and push each other to take your games to the next level yeah uh every day when we're working the offseason it's I can't really take a day off cuz you go out there no matter how I'm feeling he's freaking ready to go um um always to the line at the drill and I'm like can we take an extra 15 seconds here or whatever but um no it's it's hard to do it alone and to have somebody not not just somebody but somebody who's uh that Elite of a player to lean on and and learn from um and to motivate you know it's not a lot of raah bra this we we go out we put our heads down and we get to work every day and um yeah it's been it's been that way for for a lot of years now and um I'm I'm really grateful to have somebody like that to be able to work with how much do you um actually Gauge before ask um yeah I think the main thing right now is is taking care of our bodies and and like I said the coaches are ramping us up in the right way and making sure that we're feeling good not only for camp but when game one comes around and not only game one but you know you want to start peing you want to play well obviously early in the season every game's important but you want to you know really hit your stride later in the season and when you're heading in the playoffs um uh what was the question well you I'm only asking because you mentioned earlier that you this time you can't you start yeah what can you how can you judge yeah I think um I could hard hard on myself like I was saying but when the pads come on and you're able to work power and all the different things parts of your game it's it's a whole different game out there I think right now it's it's really about the uh the mental side of things really getting the Playbook down making sure you're 100% mentally um on top of the plays and everything and when the pads come on obviously that's when people prove themselves and you really find out the kind of players that you have and you're able to compete at a at a fuller speed so um yeah I think that's the main goal for this week we don't going to pads until Monday so I think going out there obviously running fast uh doing everything right but really being on it mentally Jo you've been with this team for a bit you've gone through a few different kind of coaching regimes if you will uh you seem really excited about Jim Harbaugh and the coaching staff talking about being excited to come into meetings and things what are the things that maybe excite you the most about this regime or how has the first few months of this compared to what you've gone through in the past yeah I mean I'm super excited obviously and every year I'm excited um the beginning of every year there's a lot of Hope and excitement going into going into each season and you never know how it's going to play out but when you get a guy like Coach Harbaugh that has been there and won at a bunch of places you know that he's not you know testing it out for the first time he has a he has a strategy that he knows that works and I think it's easy to buy in when when you have a guy like that um I mean winning a national championship going to the Super Bowl you know wherever wherever he's been he's been really really successful so to have a guy that comes in he he lays the plan out for you and uh there's no guessing it's uh it feels nice impr of the new facility it's un believable still finding my way around uh yeah I mean we've come a long way from Murphy Canyon back in San Diego me and jul were talking about it in the sauna yesterday um come a long way from there Qualcomm um playing in a soccer stadium which I still still loved it was it was a lot of fun there but yeah I mean this is when you think of the NFL this is kind of what you imagine and it's it's just great that everybody is here to take care of us and make sure that we have all the resources that we need and um you know we could I think at the at Hogue we could have been just as just as successful but definitely doesn't hurt having all these all these things that uh I think it just boosts morale and it makes you excited to pull up to the building every day
