Bryce Young, Bijan Robinson need better production in Year 2 | Pro Football Talk | NFL on NBC

all right let's do a little fill in the blank the second-year player who needs to show something this season is who miles you know I when I saw this on the rundown I I went back to uh the 2023 draft and this was actually a really easy answer because it's the first overall pick Bryce young I mean what what did we see from Bryce young that made us believe that oh man he's gonna be really viable Pro last year and there I think are a lot of reasons for that the coaching the scheme that they tried to Implement which was not was something where I mean you can read all kinds of stuff through Carolina about this that they were not all on the same page right so that certainly set Bryce young back but now with Dave can Canales you you have to be able to show something where man you're going to be worth that number one overall pick and you're gonna be worth the trade that they did to get up to number one overall and I I don't know what exactly it's going to look like I mean G did a really nice job with Baker Mayfield last year so if there's hope it rest than that but man you got to see something from Bryce young this year for me it's bejan Robinson just because there was so much hype he was the first running back taken there was the ID he's a can't miss Superstar they never used him as much as they should have there was that weird game where he was sick but they didn't disclose it he hardly had any touches against the Buccaneers the Falcons all got in trouble for it I just feel like it's not about him as much as it's about the circumstance he wasn't fully utilized last year will he be fully utilized by the new coaching staff in 2024 but I think regardless of what's to blame for last year we all expect more from bejan Robinson in 2024 because we didn't get it in 23 yeah exactly and that's something that Zack Robinson their new offensive coordinator who came with rahee morrris from the LA Rams has certainly got to do a good job of how do we utilize this guy because he should be one of the better skilled players in the National Football League right and that that offense should be good it should be good you got Drake London you got Kyle pittz you got Robinson you got a quarterback and Kirk Cousins who's a veteran and knows how to distribute the ball if that offense isn't good something's wrong all right next topic and this comes in the aftermath of the commanders trading former first round pick receiver out of Penn State Jan Dotson to the Philadelphia Eagles the Eagles give up a 2025 third round pick and a couple of 2025 seventh rounders they get back doson and a fifth rounder trading a player to a division rival is blank risky I mean it's a little risky here for Washington and obviously they've got a new front office new coaching staff but whenever you're saying this guy is not somebody that we need anymore and you trade him to a place where you're going to see him two times a year despite whether you think he's good or not you know he's going to have an opportunity to show you what you're missing so that one I think is a little bit risky from the Washington standpoint especially because I think we all feel like the eagles are going to be pretty good I mean the talent that they've got playing with two guys like Devonte Smith and AJ Brown is going to give doson opportunities we'll see if he can take advantage of them trading a player to a division rival is a bigger issue than it should be but and this is a long parenthetical that I'm going to put on the back end of it but but sometimes it's a trojan horse sometimes and I think back to Easter Sunday 2010 donov McNab traded from the Eagles to Washington Andy reing company knew what he was doing and Harry Roseman was working there at the time and to the extent the commanders think they're pulling off a reverse Trojan Horse with Jan Dawson I think Roseman extra careful with this because he doesn't want it to be basically what they did to Washington with McNab so it can blow up in your face you better be damn sure that the guy is cooked before you trade him in the division we were talking the other day about how stubborn the Packers were about not trading Brett Favre in the division cuz my position is they should have just done an auction of the contract with the Bears the Lions and the Vikings and driven the price up and gotten more than they got from the Jets why are you scared you're done with the guy you think it's over why are you afraid of facing him twice a year because he still May he's it may come back to haunt you that's that's the concern this could come back to haunt the commanders this could come back ha the commanders it could especially you know I mean he's a former first round pick so he's still under contract for the next couple years and plus potentially the option after that so I mean they they've been looking for a consistent third receiver with Philadelphia and like I said when you're playing alongside AJ Brown you're playing alongside Devonte Smith two guys that I would consider Elite at the receiver position that's gonna allow you some sort of opportunities because they can't cover everybody right so I I think this is going to be an interesting trade this is another lesson that was learned by The Eagles long ago as well sometimes a receiver just needs a new start a new team a new beginning to unlock his talent Chris Carter all he does is catch touchdowns now there were other issues going on with Carter the Eagles dump him the Eagles give him the wakeup call and he goes on to have a Hall of Fame career in Minnesota so maybe Johan doson needed this kick in the ass to access a higher level of ability and skill that we've seen yeah ideally ideally I'm only trading that guy in the division if I am 100% sure he's done or if what I'm getting from the team in the division is dramatically more than what I would get out of the division but generally speaking I would look to trade a guy out of the division unless I think it's a trojan horse hi it's Mike Florio thanks for watching PFT on YouTube hit subscribe for the latest news and Analysis from pro football talk
