all right well I saw kinds of kindness which was a very unique experience this is a movie that the first thing you have to know going in is this is an anthology movie meaning there are three different stories that go on throughout the course of this film but what's interesting is unlike how most of these movies work having different actors play each character each story has the same actors now just playing new characters which is a difficult thing to pull off cuz if you just see Jesse plem doing uh you know a role in one story you now have to completely buy him as a completely different actor so the acting had to be on point in this in this film and it certainly was the cast list is an impressive cast list of Jesse plens and uh Emma Stone being the two leads who were absolute powerhouses in this movie I see Jesse plens is getting a lot of love online but do not forget about Emma Stone either she was you know fantastic she kind didn't quite have you know plumm was the lead in the first two stories and then kind of a side character in The thirds so it makes sense that he's getting more of the attention but I thought Emma Stone was fantastic and Jesse plumming in general I I don't know exactly how to describe it but when a second story started you see him like I think he's just sitting at the table eating cereal or something like that but like just the way he was doing it you're immediately like this is a different guy like you just and there was a couple of like they did some like hair styling stuff also to help with that but like not much it really was just the performance and you're just immediately like yeah that's a that's a new person right there just due to the subtleties of you know their his performance and again it wasn't just him I mentioned Emma Stone but also you got Mar margar qua uh you have hongcha who criminally underutilized in this movie just like she's criminally underutilized in every movie I was happy to see her get some uh significant uh camera time though she she she's great I I want to see her more stuff cuz she's really good William defo of of course uh always fantastic William defo probably the one guy who was kind of just William defo in each of the stories but there even were some uh there were some differences the characters were very well written and I think that you felt the differences between these uh you know you you still felt the difference between his characters even if he's kind of just William defo I will get into spoilers at the end of this video but I'm going to keep it relatively spoiler-free as of right now cuz I want to give some general thoughts about the movie although uh you know I am going to describe the plot of the three stories so if that's something that you know uh maybe you don't want to hear you could you know just just warning you ahead of time but I think what you has to be mentioned about this kind of movie is of course this is the yor ghost Almos movie the guy who is coming off of poor things which was probably his most like s just like uh critically and commercially commercially successful movie it's certainly the one that I feel like most people uh that aren't huge movie fans that might be the first time they've heard of one of his films but what's worth mentioning is that the writing partner for this one uh eamus uh Phil philipo is maybe how you say his name he is someone who is very much you look at the more surreal the most surreal stories that laimos has taken on or has uh you know come up with himself have been with this writing partner the lobster killing of a sacred deer dog tooth typically the more weird it gets it's because of this Duo so it's actually not that shocking that we saw a pretty big departure from poor things poor things is a movie that certainly has aspects you can read into and you can get you know uh get out of in more deeper meanings but it's also a film that very much just works on a surface level this is just full-on surrealism if you're familiar with yor Go's filmography the lobster is probably the best comparison I would make a film that I really enjoyed I I need to give that a rewatch because uh I just feel like that's one that you got to see multiple times just like this one is probably one I'm going to want to watch multiple times I'm going to describe the plots although I'm going to be pretty vague just because part of the strength of this movie is how it gives information and I'll use an example with the first story which is that you have Jesse plens who uh works for William defoe's character and there's uh a interesting exchange between the two of them where William defo essentially asked Jesse plums to get you know he's drive your car park at a certain or it was uh drive your car fast into another car that that's what you have to do and that was kind of a weird uh thing that uh that you would ask but instead of Jesse Plum's you know instead of what how most of us would react which is what are you saying that's crazy he is like not wanting to do it but it's not like he's like what are you talking about it's very like a subtle like but uh I'm not sure if that's something I want to do which kind of lets us know the interesting world that has all of a sudden been created where a request like this isn't considering shocking but still not something that he wants to do that is the first story is the kind of the relationship between those two the second story has a uh again it's it's very much almost like a mystery the way this one is uh set up although of course goes in very unique ways which is that Jesse plens is married to Emma Stone Emma Stone is uh Missing for a while and then all of a sudden she comes back but seems slightly off and he's not exactly sure why the third and final story is that emone and Jesse plens appear to be in this weird sex cult thing uh and they're also looking for their Jesus type uh essentially that those are the three stories and it's also worth mentioning this is a bit of a marathon this one is I believe 2 hours and 45 minutes uh you're you're there for a while and so for a very surreal movie again the fact that there's three different stories does uh I think play to its favor is that you don't I I don't think it really drags too much I did kind of get sleepy during the third story but I think that might have just been I was tired it was you know I had a full work day and then went the the movie right after so uh you know I was still enjoying the movie and like really wanting to make sure I didn't uh fall asleep or anything cuz I wanted to see what was happening but that that is part of my experience with the film this is definitely a movie that has has turned some people off again if you're expecting poor things or you know even something more grounded than that you are probably going to be disappointed this is a movie that does not really work on a surface level of just the like traditional story narratives pretty much all of these stories end with more of a um you know metaphor than like an actual just like solid ending but if you you know watch this channel enough uh which you know I don't know how many people have but if you're someone who's been a fan of of this channel for a bit you know that this is the kind of stuff I love I was a huge fan of Bo is afraid that was my favorite movie of last year I like surrealism this is something that's interesting to me and I do like being able to think about movies and think about what they mean and spend more time than just the 2 hours and 45 minutes that I spent in the theater I am still coming up with theories that I'm going to share with you as soon as I get my rating this is not a movie for everybody this was a movie for me I'm giving this a n out of 10 I I I I quite frankly love this movie I had a great time uh watching it and dissecting it and sometimes there's just there's movies that you're like yeah this is something that I don't know how many people I could recommend this to I will say I watched this with my fiance and she also very much enjoyed it so although she kind of likes this kind of stuff too she also enjoyed Bose AF Frid so uh that might be a litness test if B was afraid is one you walked out of halfway through maybe this isn't for you but that rhymed unintentionally um but if this is something that maybe you uh if that's something that's you know uh that you really enjoyed I would recommend checking this out I think it's a very unique experience so yeah that is my rating that is my spoiler-free review let's get into some analysis now so all right let's get into spoilers here as uh so you're watching any further this is either you've seen the movie or just don't care about spoilers and like to hear thoughts about movie that maybe you're not going to see or whatever um so I kind of wanted to give my analysis on what this film means what this film is going for cuz I can see why some people might walk out of the theater theater frustrated if they you know didn't really pick up on any of the deeper meanings and are kind of like why did I just watch that sure there was some really entertaining Parts some some funny parts all that stuff but like you know what was I seeing here I my interpretation of this is there was one moment in the movie where the word kind was actually used like Jesse plem said thank you you're very kind it was in the first story when Jesse plem purposely injured himself to get Emma Stone to help him that was uh essentially he manipulated Emma Stone uh by and when he did it he said you're being very kind and to me that is almost the missing statement of this movie it's about power dynamics in my opinion this is my interpretation which a lot of people actually have different interpretations so that I'm given mine um one that part in the movie happened though to me this is saying hey that's what the title of the movie is it's kinds of kindness these are different types of being kind but a lot of times when you're a a manipulator or when there are power dynamics at Play It's the victim that is being kind essentially that they are doing nice things and uh I think the dog example is a very good example of that we saw a lot of dogs throughout this movie it was a clear Point like dogs were a theme throughout it and I mean a dog is something that is undeniably very kind dogs have this undying you know kindness I have a dog I love my dog because of how often she is just happy to see me and very kind but part of why dogs act that way is because they are conditioned to think that they have to be nice to the humans around them so they continue to get food and if they don't they will die that is like a thing that that's part of why they do that there is an undeniable power Dynamic at Play between me and my dog I love my dog I'm not you know using that power dynamic in a manipulative way but you know you could if you wanted to and I think that's the uh that's to me again the mission statement of this film and you go through each story and they all exhibit that the first story which seems to be everyone's favorite story and I probably agree uh although I I think I actually have been really warming up on the second one but the first story is probably the most like straightforward W story there there's the least I think serialism in this one not to say there isn't surrealism cuz again you have like uh like all of a sudden William defo and Jessie plemons are kind of in love but like in what way it's I mean it seems like in a sexual way but like again in what way uh like like because it's that's not a relationship that exists in the real world the way they're speaking to each other but to me this is using the serialism of a relationship to kind of you talk about the you typical relationship that you have with your boss and the fact that if your boss says you have to do something it if you don't do it there is a massive decline in in your life like you can lose your significant other uh uh if you get fired from your job like you know because of the stress that that can bring while the uh example of hey maybe you have to kill someone uh your boss wants you to kill someone if not they won't like you is a bit of an extreme certainly is it though cuz like that is kind of a thing that can happen right like you can you know say I I mean look let's you know the Flint M Michigan situation of like the fact that they're purposely put pumping the drinking you know uh poor drinking water into that area and eventually caused it to not have safe drinking water period uh like people had to sign off on that that probably knew what was going on right so again not to get too political here but that is something that uh you could you could look to there is that power Dynamic the second is one I actually have a decent amount to say on this is one that I've heard I think people have the most mixed thoughts on I think the setup is so strong of a traditional setup of like oh you know person comes back and they are you know looking a little bit off uh you know they seem a little bit off like the shoe doesn't quite fit which is just a kind of a perfect way to like you know to show that cuz like it's totally could be someone just kind of you know losing their mind like oh my God the shoe doesn't fit or maybe just her shoe doesn't fit really well like it it you know maybe her feet did get swollen on the island right like that's that's a perfect example of that and it could be a great like Thriller like if you just did a traditional Thriller of this type of story it could totally work but of course that's not what uh what the creators behind this film are interested in to me this one was about and and there's clearly several things this is about including like mental health uh but I think uh one that's kind of getting underlooked is like women in relationships to men which is something yor ghost has been very fascinated in over the course of you know his film making career including just his last picture poor things which is very much about that which you know you you you think about that the way that that whole story unfolds which is you hear multiple times early on Jesse Plum's talking about how wow I wonder how skinny Emma Stone is you or he he he mentioned before he Emma Stone even comes back from the island I bet she's very skinny right now once he sees her he's like you're you're very skinny to me this is a very surrealist way to tell a story about a man who is expecting a woman to do everything that he wants her to do well in the story there's kind of like a real world example of why is he's doing that is he has a some sort of disorder that was never explicitly said but he's taking medication for but I think that this is again something that some woman can feel in certain relationships of no matter what you do you you know you you can't win the you know husband ask you to make some food with your uh you know and cut a cut a thumb off and put it on the plate and when you do that he says why did you do this that's a weird thing to to do that's obviously not something I hope anyone has ever actually had to deal with but I do think that's something that uh it's metaphorically is something some women can feel like uh they get in to the point where when they kill themselves uh you see Jesse plem still is in love with the idea of the perfect significant other instead of his actual significant other I don't know that's just how kind of how I viewed that story how my interpretation of it um it's one that works for me I feel I could have explained it a little bit better perhaps but uh seen the movie A few days ago now so maybe not all the details are quite as clear as if I recorded this right after but hopefully that made uh some sense to you so that that's kind of how I viewed that the the third story again I feel you can kind of much more easily see where this is at least an idea of what this is coming from here of you know the water sex cold feels like it's uh in many ways a uh you know talking about religion and how yes like religion can still be a uh you know a power dynamic as well and doing what you can to appease a you know religious leaders Sometimes some arbitrary rules that can be broken due to no fault of your own such as in this uh scene you know in this section Emma Stone's character gets uh raped in it and you you know uh have that moment but then it's she can't be in her religious cult anymore because well now she's had sex with someone else and like she specifically gets blamed for this again it's a little bit left unclear how much she realized that she was raped versus like how much she remembers from this but uh definitely we as an audience know that that's what happened which again might seem outrageous but there are certain um you know very hardcore not all Christians are like this of course but there are certain very hardcore Christians who will say like like no you're not getting into heaven if you have premarital sex including if you get raped like that is something that I say Christians but just religious people in general uh some of the more hardcore ones will believe that so yeah those were kind of my like broader topic thoughts I had of this film I think you could honestly get really into the weeds with some of the smaller things as well there was a lot of like little details and and not everything I wasn't watching this movie you know one thing I would say is I wasn't like oh I wonder what this means I wonder what this means was kind of just watching it to watch it and then sort of after the fact piecing together my thoughts I think that's probably the best way to to experience it I think maybe you know uh thinking about it a little bit could work it's definitely one I'm going to going to check out again it's one that I really enjoyed kind of just again as a almost a thought exercise in a sense it's one that challenges you to essentially dream about these crazy worlds that they've made up and and that's what I liked about the lobster that's what I liked about this one um it's probably my favorite oros lot the most movie actually which is definitely going to be a hot take but I I I really quite enjoyed it so yeah I guess those are my thoughts on this movie let me know in the comments below do you agree or disagree with everything I said maybe you have your uh own uh you know thoughts on it maybe you think all of my theories are stupid which they might be but they're what I came up with so they you know they they're what I got out of the movie which means that I guess they work for me uh so yeah let me know your thoughts in the comments below always love hearing from yall and of course as always thanks for watching
