game tonight on the national radio side on Westwood One our conversation with him brought to you by the members and contractors of local a25 Operating Engineers El a25 building our future and I wanted to know from Kurt with Aaron roders making his return to the lineup what is the most important thing that a quarterback in Aaron's case should be guarding against especially after a long layoff I mean he's played so much football that that I'm not sure I'm sitting here going oh you got to guard against anything I'm sure he's going to be amped up um you know even though he's played a lot of football and won a lot of MVPs and done everything you can do in this league I know he feels the expectation that is on him and this Jets organization especially after how last season played out so that's probably the biggest thing is is just controlling your emotions again it's been a while the expectations obviously there's a big moment against you know what many might argue is the best team in the NFC so there's a lot writing on the first impressions and how they play tonight so just coming out being able to manage those emotions early and then just get back to being uh who he's always been and uh and I think he'll be just fine yeah Kur Greg butle when when I watched some of the games this past weekend uh it really looked so so inefficient a lot of plays uh how much of that would you would you say is because really none of the starters played much in the preseason yeah it was ugly um maybe the worst quarterback play I've seen throughout a weekend since I started analyzing in the NFL I was uh you know frustrated just watching it and you know you tried to put your finger on exactly why I mean the thing is we had 13 quarterbacks starting that were 27 years old or younger uh including three rookies so you know maybe that plays a part in it uh you talk about preseason I know when I was in the league I played every year in the preseason and every year was a little bit different because I knew when I was ready I like I wanted to play I wanted to to feel um you know the pressure I wanted to get hit I wanted to get acclimated with the speed and um you know sometimes it took a game and a half sometimes it took through the third preseason game but I always knew when I was ready and and I liked that part of it and so there to me has to be some some type of correlation uh to think that every one of these guys and not just quarterbacks but all the guys that don't play that all of these guys that haven't played any football you know between the lines uh you know with the adrenaline all of that stuff they haven't played any football when they come into week one it has to have some kind of effect um you know and especially when you see a lot of these guys that we know are really good not playing as well early in the year I do believe there has to be some correlation I don't know what that correlation is I don't know how much time most guys need we've seen plenty of guys that have not played in the preseason at all that have been just fine um but I do have to believe there's something to you know game type situations not just practicing against another team but game type situations that adrenalised all of that coming out at halftime you know the fatigue uh for a lot of these guys of of leaning on a somebody else and physically having to make tackles that it has to uh have some kind of effect and uh I you know I just I don't like it I don't like the the way that you know the season played out the SE the the week played out this week in terms of inefficiency and and bad football um but I I suppose you know you have to wrestle with what's better you know is it better to come out a little bit slow and hit your stride down the stretch or is it better to play these guys in preseason and take uh you know the unnecessary risk of of maybe one of them getting hurt talking with Kurt Warner he's brought to you by the members and contractors of lagging behind a little bit now you return Aaron Rodgers you bring in three new starters on your offensive line incorporate a weapon like Mike Williams from the Chargers what do you think the Outlook has in store for this football team I believe everybody has talked about it through the off season is that you know you have an older quarterback you've got some older guys that you brought in on the offensive line that a big part of it will be Health but you know outside of that if this team stays healthy with what they look like on paper um you know knowing that their defense is going to be good because they're more youthful over there and they've got a lot of guys that have done it and they've been together um you have to believe the Outlook is really really good um I just if Aaron Rodgers is Aaron roders with the pieces that they have here I fully expect them to contend in the AFC uh to without a doubt be a playoff team possibly win the division um and contend with the best teams in the league and and I don't know how you can see it any different uh when you just look at the Players if the players are who they've been throughout their career I think it's going to be an exciting year for for the Jets and I'm excited to see that tested out tonight and and see where they're at I think all Jet fans would Echo that sentiment as well Kurt thanks so much for a couple of minutes season and we don't know how long that's going to continue as well given all the rust and I will tell you that I think the biggest surprise at quarterback was deshun Watson in Cleveland I mean it looked like he hadn't played the position ever now I maybe they had some issues with your offensive line but that their defense looked like they were on the field all game which they were so you have a Cleveland defense that's really good and they get shellacked and and that's all because that offense was three and out they turned the ball over they didn't do well and that's that's just goes into it feeds right into my point and that is you want to have a great defense you've got to get them off the field then you can be a great defense you can be a good defense and lose 30 to1 because your offense hasn't done a thing well somebody who knows something about defense that would be the head coach of the Jets Robert Sal in fact before he became the Jets head coach he was the same San Night Football with Robert Salah for the first time this year in the coach's report how excited are you to get this going oh I think I'm about speak for everyone we're all excited um it's uh week one always comes with a lot of anticipation but um but we're all excited how excited are you especially for Aaron Rogers to be able to get back out there and play football uh very excited but you know what um as excited as we are for him I'm excited for all the other guys to get an opportunity to go play with him you know and uh um you know the football Gods uh cheated us a little bit last year but uh but at the same time uh we have a great opportunity this year and uh and I think I again I speak for everyone that I think we're all looking forward to it yeah they didn't just cheat you a little bit they cheat they cheated you a lot they cheated all of us but interested as well rearview mirror now to talk about how you treated training camp because he said one of the toughest camps he's been through and you clearly had a strategy increased reps he mentioned this team was kind of callist coming out of training camp and you didn't play anybody for the most part veteran wise in the preseason games but the joint practices increased reps good on good in in Training Camps so what was your philosophy with that and what do you think it accomplished for you you know um you you you can look at it many different ways and like I said this probably more of a hypothesis in science based but um I feel like the the less these guys have worked the more susceptible they've gotten to injury uh you know you're looking at load management not just in football but all of sport and uh where I'm looking at it like it's I feel like we're detraining our guys especially in a contact board so the idea was to just play more football um let's let's H uh take off the bubble wrap take off the kids gloves and let's just go play football as much as we can and and hopefully that uh but with the with being smart to the idea that we're not going to just drive them into the dirt um but we played a lot more football this training camp and uh and because of it I think we're more prepared than we've ever been how about your offensive line to that point because when an offensive line really has it going they look like A Chorus Line right like you can watch them on tape and their feet look like the Rockets right they are just in sync and everyone moves in synchronicity with one another these guys have played a lot of football and you've got a left tackle that's going to walk backwards into the Hall of Fame the minute that his career is over having said that though some new pieces to the left and right of one another so that group in the chemistry that they've got already and that you're hoping they'll develop as the season goes on yeah I think it's the first time since uh we've been here where our o line has been able to work so much during training camp together um a ton of reps uh uh with the starting five and that hasn't been the case in our first three years so that's that that's been really beneficial but uh you know it's um it's a really cool group um like I said we got a heck of a lot more reps than we have in the past and because of it I you know the old line looks good and uh now we'll see what it looks like on Monday um or in this uh in this first one but um but I know that it's going to get better and better as the year goes on defensively as well some new faces and some cool stories right like we always I'm sure on Cut Down day that's going to be a tough time for you where you have to deliver bad news to some players but you've got some guys on your defensive line that you got to tell the great news to that they get to live the dream and um you know some of those players could play roles tonight in this game that are important for you as well so we know who the stars are but but maybe educ the fans a little bit about some of the guys you've got on this defense that you're excited to see what they become this year yeah um there's a bunch of guys you know you you like to see ta starting on the back end uh Tony Adams take another step Chuck Clark coming back after his ACL so uh him getting an opportunity to play ball again and you know the linebackers all look uh just like they've always have and our Corners look fantastic and then on the D line you know you've got a few undrafted free agents that uh that somehow made the team and um and credit to them cuz I didn't think it would be possible when when uh when they first showed up around rookie mini camp but uh you know Javon kinlaw's looking for uh for new life and and uh and the way s and quinnon work and will McDonald's looking to take another step and Tech McKinley is looking for a Revival so there's and then Germaine is is looking to build off of last year so um a lot of guys a lot of cool stories but um and now they get the opportunity to go go put it uh put it to work yeah Germaine Johnson was one guy I wanted to mention as well he seems like he might be the least talked about guy in New York City that might really be on the verge of taking a step to start him as an athlete because you know the year he had last year the work it seems like he's put in how much his teammates really seem to like him and the role that he's probably going to play on your defense yeah he's um you know there's nothing flash you about his game you know he's just a a [Music] hardworking uh powerful human being that that does his job and does it very very well and um you know so I think I think he kind of flies under the radar uh because he's not it's not like it just pops off the tape but when the game's over you're like man that guy was freaking all over the place you know so um you know he's only going to get better um he's still young he's still learning and uh and really looking forward to seeing the step he takes this year all right let's get to the matchup tonight obviously a very difficult one you're a defensive coach with your na I feel like from a defensive standpoint both sides are probably presented kind of with the same challenge or like they're probably sitting there going who Aaron roders there's Breece Hall coming out of the backfield you got Garrett Wilson and some Shifty slot receivers add Mike Williams in well you're probably looking at them going Christian mcaffrey and iuk and you know I gotta worry about Debo and KD up the seam and right I mean there's a lot of weapons both ways on this field how hard is this going to be for both defenses tonight and and specifically yours with all those weapons they have to defend yeah they're they're absolutely loaded um still trying to figure out how they pay all those guys but uh even with the rookie quarterback it's still fascinating but um but no they're um they are talented they're talented on the o line their quarterback I know he's he's young but he's Uber talented and then their skill guys are are phenomenal but um but I think we're pretty freaking good too you know especially on defense and uh and then offensively I I don't think people know who we are yet but uh hopefully by the end of the year uh everyone will yep and for your offense some challenges looking at their defense obviously Bosa right coming off one Edge and Floyd off the other and they I mean they they've got some really good players so when you look at that group and what you have to worry most about protecting Aaron but also getting your guys free yeah they're their their D line is is uh has been so good for so long well coached with cerak being over there and uh but uh Fred Warner is you know he's he's as good as any Mike linebacker there is in football and um and he's been doing it for a long time and he does it at a very very high level with tons of energy and um you know so he's he that defense um you know it's it's extremely talented they're well coached and uh they're they're a problem the matchup you know between he and Christian mcaffry that we won't get to see tonight because mcaffrey is inactive this is you know an opportunity for Bree Hall to go out there and be the star of the show and to utilize his talents compared to last off season Bree Hall not rehabbing an injury like he had to last year of course you know what I would do if if Bree Hall has nine receptions out of the not seeing Marty sitting there but this is our chance of course with Marty listening as a team Ambassador now Jet fans you'll see him around the stadium he will still be a part very much of the Jets organization certainly at home on game days and at times on the road with us as well we miss him tonight but we're happy we're still going to see him I look over to my right now and I see Anthony Beck appreciate it I mean you said it Marty's a legend to fill those shoes it's an honor and hopefully I'm as good-look as he is as you look over to your right throughout the season I'm going to try my looking part of the jet radio team I come in second in a second two-horse race once again how excited though are we to kick off this jet season unwrap what feels like a Christmas present for Jet fans under the tree with Aaron roders back at quarterback knowing how anticipated this year is yeah I mean this is money to see him out there warming up uh throwing passes around to see Bree Hall really the offensive line I just saw Tyron Smith lead the charge out of the Huddle I mean he looks the part he's always looked the part on TV but now you see him in person he's your left tackle it makes me feel good I know it makes Aaron Rogers feel really good as well so again just the excitement of just seeing what this team's going to look like and it's going to start tonight when arguably you know Wilson but who is the two who is going to step up and be that guy that takes some of the pressure off Garrett takes some of the pressure off the tight ends of running backs Alan Lazard to me and Mike Williams are two guys to me that I want to have my eye watching in this football game Mike Williams got himself back got off pup couple weeks ago what will he look like everything that's been set out of practice is he's ready to go he looks great I want to see that first ball him go up make a big catch and with Alan Lazard back again this year working with Aaron Rogers how different does that look where now he's back with the guy that he had his best season with in Green Bay if you're Aaron Rodgers are you almost hoping for that first hit early just get some contact get it out of the way and maybe shake off the I wore the red jersey all the way through training camp get some contact and play football again I don't know about the first play but I think at some point maybe not the first play but at least early yeah no you're right I mean listen it's going to happen I mean this is a premier pass rush defense the 49ers bring to the table but again this is a great matchup versus a revamped offensive line it should be fun to watch and I'm looking forward to seeing how they protect and man up versus the 49ers front we've got the new Dynamic kickoff rules Jake Moody kicking it from the 35 yd line all of the blockers and receiving blockers as well and coverage men within about 5 yards of one another at the plus 40 andus 35 yd line and the Jets will drop rookie running back and they do it really well look to see that being added to this Jets offense ball on the left hash two tight end set left slot right Lazard and Garrett Wilson sweep to the right and hit at the line of scrimmage and now falling across the 35 is Bree Hall he picks up about two and a half more Fred Warner makes the stop so it will be third down and about three and a half for the Jets just across their own 36 close to their own 37 yd line so maybe this is the first chance we will see for Aaron roders to put one up as the crowd making a lot of noise here at Levi Stadium and Santa Clara third down and three and a half the Jets just shy of their own 37 yd line Xavier Gibson checks in the game trips to the left Gibson Lazard and Conlin to the near side right Garrett Wilson shotgun set for Rogers in motion splitting out wide left conkin back to throw Rogers looks left throws left through the hands of Lazard and incomplete it looked like he lost his footing a bit as he tried to come out of his route and break right to left and couldn't readjust to make the catch so the Jets will have to kick it away yeah it was basically you talked about the trips to the left side and it's basically a five yard out route they call it a stick Aaron Rogers puts it right on him there was a slight stick but that's a ball that that Alan Lazard must catch and that was a problem area last year with Alan Lazar but again it's a good start two good runs you got to make that completion so you can move the chains Jacob coing back deep to receive the punt of Thomas morstead who gets away a high spiraling kick that chases cowing and a fair catch all the way back inside his own 10 yd line back to about the eight terrific punt to start for Thomas morstad no return and a 55 yd punt so that will set up Brock pie and the 49ers offense at their own eight yd line and here comes the Jets starting defense for the first time and they will have Javon kinlaw as the newest member of the interior of the defensive line alongside quinnon Williams and he is a large human and he should be a welcome addition to the jet defensive line with Quinn and Williams to his right Michael Clemens and Germaine Johnson the defensive end CJ Mosley Quincy Williams in the middle of that CET defense as well as jamen Sherwood out there on first down a handoff right up the gut and there is Jamie and Sherwood making his presence felt on the first snap of the game as he was there to meet Jordan Mason in the hole maybe a gain of two yards on first down for Mason again no Christian McCaffrey so the Jets start with their base three linebackers on the field DJ Reed s Gardner on corners and Chuck Clark Tony Adams the safeties Michael Carter the second second is the nickel when called upon Ashton Davis is out there right now as well as pie lines up in the shotgun second down and eight 49ers at their own 10 yd line back to throw is pie looks right swing pass right caught up the right sideline by George KD close to a first down as he's brought down at the 49ers 11 yd line couple of yards shy Quincy Williams flowed over to make the stop so third down and two for San Francisco at their own 16 yd line and an easy quick out to the tight end side to KD and I think the biggest thing when you're defending a guy like KD is yeah he's going to get his catches his targets but make sure you tackle him once the ball is in his hands that's a nice job by S Gardner and like you said Williams on the outside to bring him down so the jet starting defense presented by the New Jersey Lottery has forced third down and two on this opening possession again no mcaffrey so Jordan Mason to the left of pie in the shotgun pie takes the snap drops back under some pressure floats one deep sideline to the near side incomplete Carter terrific position on Debo Samuel and the Jets have forced a three and out quinnon Williams with some middle pressure it looked like Anthony he got Brock pie a little bit off of his spot and that certainly helped maybe an Aon throw and now the Jets might get some field position yeah absolutely quinnon Williams right in the face you want pressure for any quarterback in the league right up the middle he brings it it makes Brock pie throw the ball a awkwardly Debo saniels goes for a corner route but he's going against one of the best if not the best slot cover nickel guy in the game Michael Carter who was rewarded with a hefty contract a few weeks ago so now Mitch wishnowski to punt it away from about the 5 yd line Xavier Gibson clows to his right Fields it at the jet 26 makes there's the magic we saw between those two all too briefly last year in the pre-season but they pick up 16 yards and a jet first down and that's the work they put in in the off season Garrett Wilson's lined up in the slot on the left side kind of shakes the defender on manto man coverage and Fades to the outside he throws the ball a little bit behind him because he wants Garrett to come back and make the catch bodies the ball in makes a big play 35 consecutive games with at least one catch for Garrett Wilson near Midfield play action Rogers back to throw over the middle hits Breeze Hall mtin he's immediately brought down again by Fred Warner The Tackle machine in the middle of that Niners defense six straight years with at least 100 tackles for Fred Warner so it's a gain of three maybe four just across Midfield second and six for the Jets 8 and2 minutes to go in the first quarter and the Jets Trail three nothing so they Mark him down at the 49ers 49 yd line and it will be second down and seven Hall to Rogers right Lazard and Gibson tight right wide left Wilson Aaron Rogers takes the snap hand off free Hall up the middle no gain into the arms of Alik Collins he may have lost a half yard so it's going to set up third down again third down and at least seven if not eight it's two plays Now by Malik Collins getting in the back field kind of swimming ABT on the inside he's not known for his Run Stop ability more of a run stopper excuse me a pass rusher coming up big so far he has to be blocked on that backside empty backfield five wide Breeze Hall the widest out to the left as a receiver Aaron roders in the shotgun final instructions to his offensive line play clock at seven gets down to five play clock at three he lifts one leg takes the snap drops back slant over the middle again it's Garrett Wilson he's got the first down to the 35 yd line of San Francisco a bullet sidearm Aaron roders on time again to Garrett Wilson another third down conversion and the Jets in business at the ners 35 yeah ners are in zone he's got a linebacker on top of them in the slide on the left side gett Wilson just goes around pulls it inside hard hard and the ball is out the timing the throw everything's there for a big play for 14 yards moving the sticks again Rogers and the shotgun tight left Lazard and Gibson who now motions across the ball screen left caught by Bree Hall at the 35 gets a block he's loose all the way down to about the 20 yd line before he's brought down they'll Mark him down at the 22 Fred Warner made the stop but that's a gain of 13 and a good job by Tyler Conklin out on the edge to help block for the breeze Hall screen absolutely body on a body on the outside a quick throw almost a quick swing pass you see the athleticism of the center titman as well getting out in space you got head hat on hat and when that's a that's a problem if you get a ball in space with breall making few players missing another first down for the Jets 620 to go in the opening quarter four for four on this drive Aaron Rogers and a couple of beautiful third down throws I formation Rucker the fullback Bree Hall the tail back straight ahead handoff to Bree Hall makes a man miss at the line and dives into the Red Zone bobbed and weaved and picked up about three and a half maybe four it'll be second down and six inside the 19 yd line of San Francisco got Rucker playing a little fullback that time in an ey true eye formation doing a little Bend back to the right side and the one thing about Bree Hall he rarely gets hit behind the back field even with a little push there he's able to still get yards uh on four yards on that run Garrett Wilson tight left Lazard and Gibson to the near side right cing the tight end in line to the right hand side now Gibson goes in motion right to left shotgun for Rogers back to throw looks over the middle scans the field throws one left incomplete and Ed for Lazard he was tied up with charvarius ward in coverage so again it is a third down the jet offensive line though gave Aaron Rogers plenty of time to throw there Anthony that was encouraging from a pass protection standpoint it was and you see Aaron Rogers was kind of ansy with it back there realizing that an internal clock was kind of going off but he had time that's going to boat well when he goes back and watches the film on the sideline and says hey I got my guys they got my back now it can be a little more accurate on those throws if it if it comes to a few seconds having to hold that ball Lazard tight left Conlin Williams and Wilson to the right third down and six slant right caught Garrett Wilson down to the 11 yd line it looks to be good enough for another first down that's three times on this drive on third down Aaron roders has been able to convert on third down and guess who does it again yeah g Wilson man trips to the right side Garrett Wilson's all the way outside two inside receivers cleared out Garrett Wilson runs a now route which means he goes immediately inside and listen you get the ball to your best players on third down gets it to Garrett Wilson moves the chains again another conversion for theet this is Braden McGregor he's in the game playing a little bit of end for the Jets right now getting some early action for him as a young player in a big game gets trying to use the depth they've got on that defensive line as Deo Samuel motions right to left two tight ends both set right hand off Jordan Mason Powers his way off left tackle for a first down to the jet 46 yd line Tony Adams another stop for New York and now the Jets Will Roll their defensive lineman Michael Clemens Quinn and Williams and it looks like is that Javon kinlaw on up Jaylen Holmes all checking in the game jam and Sherwood comes back in so we're seeing the Jets Anthony using their depth and rolling a lot of different front seven Defenders yeah keep them frh fresh they they feel like they got a really good defensive line and a lot of good players and you know BR McGregor has earned the right to be on the football field he's going to get some time tonight eye formation pry under Center first and 10 at the jet 45 toss sweep to the right to Mason at the 45 40 had his legs cut out from under him but picked up it looks like about 5 and a half to six yards Quincy Williams came over to make the stop it'll be second down at four yeah you know they chipped the tight end on the the outside there with Michael Clemens on the edge Clemens has the edge and he has to make sure he secures that he's gets picked again because they pulled another tight end to block them allowing Mason to get on the outside that's what the 49ers want to do they want to get to the perimeter it's going to be important for the edge players to be good contained players as this game goes on Jaan Jennings motions right to left py under Center at the jet 39 yd line another hand off to Mason starts to the right and cuts it back gets to the 30 yd line of the jet before he's brought down Tony Adams again in on the tackle with Sherwood also coming up to help on the stop was Chuck Clark but it's a gain of eight more and a Niners first down so this has all been work on the ground by San Francisco to the jet 30 yeah and that's something the 49ers are going to stick with it regardless of Christian mcaffrey playing or not now when you cut back to the backside it's buyer beware for the running back two missed tackles by from some short tackles by the Jets s then Mosley you got to bring them down in the back field you cannot let them get momentum in the Run game to create first downs Hy in the shotgun as to his right a toss to the right as at the 30yd line finds a crease down the sideline inside the 20 inside the 15 finally bumped out by Adams in the Red Zone but there's a flag down back at the line of scrimmage CJ Mosley down on one knee I think he believes he was [Applause] held and Colton mckivitz right tackle guilty of that hole that's a big call that'll make it first and 20 yeah I watch that play go down Cole mivit tackles Moy I Mosley excuse me on the edge there brings him down that's the reason why the play gets so well outside Mosley's in a great position to make the tackle very easy call pushes him back and again Mosley might get caught on a Miss tackle once in a while I promise you he's going to come back and make an even bigger play and that one right there just a hard guy to block that's the first accepted penalty as CJ Mosley actually now walking off the field with the jet trainers so that hold and that tackle hopefully it just knocked the wind out of CJ Mosley he takes the helmet off I'm not sure they're even bringing him to the injury tent we'll see but CJ Mosley out of the game right now so it is a Sherwood Quincy Williams combo at linebacker with the Jets nickel group on the field and the ners behind the chains after a nyd penalty so first and 19 as Isaac gendo is now to the right of pie in the shotgun Mosley will go to the tent use check in motion cie back to throw looks left slant left incomplete DJ Reed with a hand around Debo Samuel to knock it away it'll be second down in 19 one thing that these secondary players in particular the corners do really well is when you run slant routes they drive through the ball and knock it out it's a great job DJ Reed not pulling and grabbing being in a good position knocking and swiping the ball away once it hits Debo Samuels perfect timing on the edge you hear the crowd billan because they think he was there early and he may be a tad bit but in slow motion it's it's easier to see but in real time that's a good play by Reed pie in the shotgun second down and 19 at the jet 39 yd line Samuel in motion out to the left pie back to throw looking downfield fires one over the middle and in stride at the jet 20 yd line Jawan Jennings spinning for a first down in the red zone at the jet 18 Tony Adams made the stop a gain of 22 Joan Jennings doesn't catch a lot of balls during the season you kind of lose him in the defense but he is a formidable receiver known for more of his blocking but he basically runs a basic route from left to right it's a 10 yard in Brock pie looks off his stars and comes back in the middle in the zone coverage a big void for him to throw that football in a big game slot left solo right Samuel back in the game Jordan Mason is the lone setback back under Center is pie in the Red Zone first and 10 at the 17 of the Jets handoff Mason running right at the 15 at the 10 has a crease at the goal line he's in for a touchdown flag throw we'll have to check the penalty marker it might be against San Francisco it looks like it is take the touchdown off the board here's going to be a holding call out on the edge number one off and it goes against Debo Samuel who was part of the group blocking to clear the lane for Jordan Mason the one thing we talked about was Containment Jets have to be a little bit firmer on the edge that side again that was Michael clemens's side but s Garder getting blocked by Debo Samuels his hands look like they're inside but he's grabbing and pulling s kind of kind of opens his arms up to try to get off and Samuels does not let go and it's an easy call for the official on the right side of the field it is a spot foul and it was well downfield so they'll put the ball at the 16 yd line and make it first and nine wide left goes auk slot left use Che Debo Samuel lines up in the back field to the right of pie in the shotgun KD motions left cie back to throw screen pass left caught by Samuel running left DJ Reed comes up cuts his legs out from under him at the 15 yd line another flag is thrown and we'll have to check check this penalty [Applause] marker could be a holding again on the edge it was a kind of a receiver swing screen with Debo coming out of the back field number 44 off so they've got Kyle yusek with offensive pass interference the third penalty on San Francisco on this drive that will move them back outside the Red Zone with 8 minutes to go before halftime and make it first and 19 yeah use check engages with the defender on the Jets before the ball comes out of the quarterback's hands that's a no no when you're talking about running those kind of screens so again didn't time up really well for the 49ers on the swing pass and they get another penalty [Applause] so it looks like the Jets I'm not sure if they picked the flag up but it is now second and six at the jet 13 yd line they may have picked the flag up after discussion so it is now second and six at the jet 13 yd line Mason theone set back wide receiver to either side handoff Mason running left cuts it up field at the 10 at the five backs his way down to about the three yd line maybe the two where it'll be first and goal so the one disturbing part of this is and Anthony in spite of the penalties when the Niners have wanted to run the ball they have run the ball effectively against the jet defense on this drive they have and they're really attacking the edge I mean 90% of the runs by the 49ers are going off tackle and there obviously they're always going to get big yards when you go behind big Trent Williams Jermaine Johnson doing a good job of engaging being physical but he's got to shed and get off those blocks hard to do easier to say when they're talking about Trent Williams on the edge first and goal at about the two Mason theone set back two tight end stack Right In Motion goes Samuel Jet Sweep bio Samuel runs right Dives at the goal line is he in yes that's a San Francisco touchdown and the 49ers take the lead with 654 to go in the first half physical drive here there's a lot of run plays and again the edge coming up Debo Samuels is a stopping the Run uh if they're in a base uh with the a single tight end and uh potentially two tight ends in there to stop the run Hy and the shotgun KD in motion he's back to throw looks left throws Kyle yusek runs on the field and Jaan Jennings runs off the field than an official should run in stand over the football look over at the jet sideline and say do you want a substitute to the Jets all of a sudden were kind of scrambling around wondering who's supposed to cover who because a tight end ran on the field and a wide receiver left and the Jets should be allowed to respond with their personnel group and the officials never stood over the ball so first game for them too Bob guess that was not well done as far as I can tell by the officials now after the timeout perie back to throw on Third and three looks right slant right Deo Samuel makes the catch dragged down inside the jet 30 by DJ Reed at the New York 27 yd line but it is another first down another third down conversion for San Francisco with a minute to go in the half they keep the drive alive a gain of 16 man tough look on the right side him and KD were kind of stacked up and they did a little switch release and kind of picked each other's Defender and Debo came across the middle with nobody on him DJ Reed coming in trying to tackle from behind chasing at after kind of getting picked on the edge there by KD 40 seconds to go on the remember San Francisco also starts the third quarter with the ball and they have a 13-7 lead herie in the shotgun Jordan Mason back into his left KD in motion he's back to throw looks over the middle fires one Jan Jennings up the left scam makes the catch inside the 15 down to about the 13 yd line for another first down and a timeout called quickly from the sideline by Kyle Shanahan 24 seconds on the clock that is the second timeout called by San Francisco so they're down to one remaining and now they're in the Red Zone another in Breaking route by Jennings basically a replica last time he got open on a 10 yard in it was his first zone defense now on this play he's covered by DJ Reed and able to get subtle separation just enough for Brock pie to throw that ball in before the defender Reed can make a play so first and 10 at the 13 yd line the Jets would love to hold to a field goal here only allowed three before halftime and again with San Francisco starting the third quarter with the ball they'll try and flip the script defensively at halftime Debo Samuel wide left three receivers spread right Mason to the left of p in the shotgun now twin receivers as KD motions right to left C takes the snap drops back tunnel screen left caught by Debo Samuel and the Jets rally and bring him down for a loss Michael Clemens Quinn and Williams they were both there and they quickly rallied to bring down Debo Samuel and that forces San Francisco to spend their final time out so now 17 seconds on the clock they're out of timeouts and they're back at about the 14 yd line so any tackle the Jets make in the field of play here Anthony that the half might expire they probably have to look to either go to the sideline or go to the end zone with any pass they throw here 100% I mean they if they catch it in uh they could spike it really quick if they feel like they got something there but again just arranging that and getting on top of that you know a guy like Brock py could probably handle those things but man what an athletic play by quinnon Williams running outside from the interior line to Taco Samuels on the outside on that receiver screen just impressive shotgun for pie empty backfield Bunch set right takes the snap drops back looks right floats one back right corner of the end zone for auk lays out and complete through his hands Michael Carter the second was there in coverage 12 seconds to go in the half and now it is third down and 10 at the 13 yd line and S Gardner it looks like is back in that's two drops now by a again 13 seconds threee again the ball is perfectly thrown and Michael Carter's in great coverage he turns around but when he turns around the ball is just coming over his head so it doesn't time out time up right and it falls right in the Bread Basket to Brandon auk and he drops it 13 seconds to go in the half no time outs for San Francisco they're at the jet 13 yd line shotgun for pie and now a timeout called by Robert Salah first charge timeout Jets a 32 timeout now a tackle in the field of play would absolutely end the half so now if you're the Jets you know Yep this either has to go to the sideline or has to go to the end zone because there's no chance you'd have enough time to spike it or fire drill your field goal unit out there with only 13 seconds on the clock so there's very right there and you're a coach there's very specific areas of the field where you know the ball now has to go yeah absolutely I mean you know anything obviously the throw has to go into the end zone you think about the corner route they just threw safe throws as well you just don't want to force to throw in because they know obviously the coverage of the Jets and the type of players they have in their secondary it's very dangerous to do those things but with s Gardner now back in the game you got Man Press across the board basically a two-man with two safeties Hy takes the snap and drops back under some pressure flushed out of the pocket rolls right throws back right corner of the end zone and really just throws it away and so the Jets will hold for a field goal attempt with 8 seconds to go in the half Will McDonald provided the pressure that flushed pie out of the pocket and he made sure to just get the ball out of the back of the end zone and that will bring Jake Moody out for his third field goal attempt here in the first half he is two for two this one 31 yds from the left hash to try and stretch the lead to 16 to7 out of the hold of Mitch wishnowski the punter the snap clean the placement down the kick is on the way and it is good and San Francisco opens up a 16 to7 lead with 4 seconds to go in the [Music] half well the Jets want to tighten things up I'm sure defensively at halftime they've only allowed one touchdown but they probably are not happy with how they've allowed the 49ers to control time of possession and run the ball yeah running the ball has been the obvious right now 104 yards on the ground most of those are by Jordan Mason and most of it has come on the edge so again they made an adjustment they they got their their five defensive players on on the line of scrimmage but that's versus base personel now you got to deal with now Debo saniels comes in they got different alignments different assignments so again they're making the 49ers earn it on every drive but the 49ers are doing a nice job of just putting together longer and longer drives in every possession here as they gone into the first half where the Jets who kind of started out hot have kind of declined offensively and retaining some of those Series where they have more than three four plays in in in a particular uh possession and you wonder in the second half maybe the Jets might throw more on early downs and try and free things up a little bit more for Bree Hall yeah I think so I mean Aaron Rogers obv he came out cooking right I think he was Seven of Nine the first two series Wilson's done a nice job catching the football so I think you're right that that would be a a great option to change it up and try to get some more chunk plays booming kick through the back of the end zone for Moody so the touch back out to the 30 yd line but only 4 seconds on the clock so the Jets I'm sure will simply take a knee try to regroup at halftime down 16 to7 but their touchdown drive that was 70 yds in 7 minutes and 7 Seconds longer than any offensive Drive they had all of last season was extremely encouraging and certainly shows what they're capable of Aaron Rogers under was uh offensive tackle in the quarterback's face other than that the Jets are are poised they're in the game the question is is can they make the the the changes defensively to going into the second half and Christian mcaffry not playing tonight for the 49ers but Jordan Mason has certainly picked up the slack 11 carry 74 yards he's become the Workhorse for them so far tonight on the flip side with the Jets all eyes on Aaron roders how was he going to fair in his first game of the season seven of 11 64 yards put together a nice scoring drive there late in the first quarter a 12pl 70 yard Drive eight up over seven minutes culminating on a Bree hle three- yard run but other than that not a lot from this Jets offense no and and again you you you can't you can't have a penalty uh hurts you you can't you can't have a mistake uh a Mis block by uh an offensive lineman on third down and it's always happened on third down for them although uh they're not bad they're 50% on third down which is a lot better than uh anybody anticipated uh from last year but right now the Jets are still in this football game and we'll see how they they they Faire and what changes they make for the end but was said to be not anything related medically as to why he wasn't in the game went low on a tackle in the first quarter of this game maybe it has something to do with that but no definitive report that he's injured yeah I I I have no idea it certainly looked like he uh he got a stinger on the shoulder and maybe you know he's waiting for his arm to get unn numb but really that's not really an injury it's it's part of the game and I don't know how they rank that or whatever it may be but he he did show up uh I think on the last series and uh got back into the game so maybe maybe that's it's past that other than that I wouldn't know why he he was out of the game 49ers have run 14 more plays than the Jets on offense they've outgained the Jets 210 to 83 on offense Jets have shown that when they throw the ball down the field at least on that one scoring Drive Aaron roders was six of seven on that touchdown drive for 61 yards attacking the 49ers perimeter Garrett Wilson his favorite Target Garrett four catches for 46 yards seems to have gotten away from that a little bit since well I I I think of course one little mistake on the offensive line you know you're going to you're going to have those mistakes all of a sudden you're going to punt the ball uh the the punting by the Jets has been great they've they've allowed three field goals in the first half uh and so they they've kept the mistakes down to a minimum especially when it comes to scoring so we'll see what what changes the Jets make in the second half defensively and offensively and we will rejoin you Mason the lone setback on first down takes the handoff runs right and he is wrapped up at the line of scrimmage driven back by Germaine Johnson no gain on first down that's a positive sign for the straight ahead handoff Mason running right grabbed by kinlaw and brought down after a gain of a couple to the jet 46 so 11 1/2 minutes to go in the third quarter San Francisco has really dominated time of possession since the end of the first quarter and they have the 16 to7 lead starting the third quarter with the ball and you think about where do the 49ers want to be they want to be in third and short as many times as possible four yards or less because Kyle Shanahan can really sprinkle in the west coast system has so many four to five yard passing plays that are so hard to defend especially when you tighten your wide receivers down it's almost impossible for the defense if they get in those situations Cur under Center Jet Sweep motion for Ronny Bell he's straight back to throw got to find a way in tight coverage to knock a ball down make it pop out you're almost relying on them to make a drop or something in these short third and second down situ ages and again like you said third and two a lot of plays they can call here with multiple formations twin receivers to either side a handoff out at the spread set right up the middle goes Jordan Mason easily picking up the first down Solomon Thomas makes the stop but it's inside the jet 35 down to the New York 32 yd line so on Third and two an up thee gut run for Jordan Mason picks up eight yards spread out the tight ends the receivers they bring the tight end across and you know what what hey it may not be a pass you're so worried about it all of a sudden that action pulls guys out and it gives a nice hole for a short run to get a first down Mason offset right py under Center once again two receivers stacked right pie takes the snap Flags down might be a false start looks like it is false start number 68 offense 5yd penalty remains first down T McKinley quickly pointing at the right tackle Colton mckivitz and he was right so now it's first and 15 for San Francisco at the jet 37 and the 49ers have had a few penalties on first down in the past they've been able to overcome the five or 10 yards that they get pushed back this is a unique situation now the jet defense have to find a way to make it stop control time to crease into the end zone touchdown and the 49ers Midway through the third quarter extend their lead yeah way too easy it's a it's a run left they wrap the tight end from the right side the DNA with Aaron Rogers quarterback of what this offense eventually can become and I guess it is fair to think that with Aaron Rogers out for all of last season with a guy like Mike Williams just coming back with some of these pieces on the offensive line still kind of learning each other that this jet offense probably going to be a work in progress early in the season as well yeah and listen b there's a lot of expectation for this team I mean not just within the fan base but just nationally I mean everybody's talking about the Jets and what that's going to look like was Aaron Rogers going to come out here and just totally light it up there was going to be rust and you can see clearly that he gained momentum throughout this game but I thought early on he was on point I mean the first series of the game you go back they got an easy 5-yard pickup for first down the ball gets dropped it kills the drive and they had the fumble uh the fumble by breea so those things early a game you cannot do that and that really set the tone for giving the 49ers who again did come out the gates swinging early but by the time they got their third or fourth fifth series Bob they started to crank it up and get momentum and the Jets are going to let Tyrod Taylor finish this game out with 4 minutes and 20 seconds to go as the backup quarterback gets out there and he'll hand one off the hall
