hi everyone and welcome back to Dynamic Digital World it has been I would say about 3 months probably since the last episode we had um with going back to school and then just a load of things happening I have not had any time on my hand to record an episode until today I am so glad to be back recording my website's been completely red signed so you'll actually find almost the exact word for word script as the news story for what I'm going over today which is the WWDC 2021 keynote some awesome and I do mean awesome new features however there is unfortunately something that we will have to talk about after those cor new features for Apple which is not good and just today we've also as most you have experienced it had a massive web outage that actually took down my website for a c my website for a couple of hours um yeah that was a bit worrying i' gone to double check something on the site and then next thing I know the site of Point load so to say I was concerned is probably an understatement so with that of way this world my name is Luke and let's get started [Music] hi everyone we are back 3 months later thank you for actually coming back to the podcast it has been a very long time uh Apple just wwdt keynote and as usual we have heard about all of their newest updates coming to platforms later this year but we are going to have to talk about something slightly later on in the episode that's not so great for Apple but personally I've seen a lot of people either Rush pass or completely ignore I haven't really seen many people diving into what Apple was saying too much um but it kind of insulting as a developer who's considering putting their app on App platform to see how they feel about you and they showed this very clearly at the end of their keynote so let's get started with iOS 15 but before we do quick note um this story is available on Dynamic digital world.co site however I don't have watch privacy iCloud or Health features on there yet um that's because I had to basically prioritize which notes I wanted to type up really quickly to get this out so tonight or over the next couple of hours I'll just be adding on a few more updates with the watch us update and all of the other updates that need to be added um I wish i' had done it sooner it just unfortunately the way it's had to happen so let's get started with iOS 15 uh first thing is focus so focus is designed to allow users to basically set up profiles and then in each profile you allow us now to send in notifications and block hovers and then you can also set a separate home screen layout for each one so you can have a general purpose home screen layout that you want most of the time and then maybe when you go to work you want a different one so in this Focus profile you can set a specific home screen layout to appear when you set it uh very helpful if for example your home one has lots of your TV apps on it and stuff but then when you're at work you want some more business focused widgets to be appearing um personally I think that's quite cool to see uh shared with review so Apple have announced that some of their apps um I know photos and apple music are confirmed will include a specific shed for use action so say you're someone send you photos or someone send you an album or playlist those will go to if it's photos the shared review section in the photos app or if it's an album or playlist then it will go into the sh revie SE Apple music and it will all be nicely bunched together so you never have to worry if you say miss it in a text message and then it's been scrolled really far down to the bottom and you can't remember where it went it will be right there when you're app notification summary notification summary basically allows you to block apps from just sending you loads of notification throughout the day and you can select some apps that only send you notifications at for example 12:00 and 6:00 and what it will do is it will store every notification up until that point and it'll group them all together in a neat notification summary at those specific times so then what that will do is it will prioritize your normal conversations above it but still allow you to see what matters to you it's useful if you you got one of those actually just send to a million notifications that you want to see all of them but you don't want to see them all the time when they come in every 10 minutes so all of these features are also available in iPad OS 15 this is a very iPad Focus update in terms of my mobile device this year I stay and focus is available in Mac OS mon iPad OS 15 this is did a fairly big update so first two things app library is now on the iPad if you're an iPhone user or you saw what they announced last year you'll know the appli is basically an AppDrawer but for iOS uh is been R up to complete feature parity with Theos app Library so you can either access it by swiping uh left or swiping to your next page on the last page of your home screen or if you're in another app you can swipe up to reveal the dock same as always and app library is generally on the far right side in fact is always on the far right side as far as I can tell moved so you press on the outplay Bri and it will bring it all up for you uh then there's also widgets on the home screen so there's a biggest size of widgets but for the most part again bringing you up to feature parity with iOS users completely customize your home screen layout Beyond just the normal icons you can have widgets anywhere so for example on mine I have the weather in I had the weather I have Apple TV I have my calendar and then I also have a small technology section which shows me related technology news which I'm very interested in so I don't actually have any apps on my home screen whatsoever I just kind leave them in the app library or some in the doc but for the most part I'm fine with just for widgets new multitasking this is what I would honestly call the biggest update I had multitasking since they introduced split screen and slide over so firstly there is a new menu at the top of the screen so when you click on it it will then bring up three options at the top and depending on the app you're in there may also be what's known from Shelf at the bottom I'll get onto the Shelf in a bit let's start with the top part so the part of the top is what you'll see on all apps even if they don't actually have a multitasking view so you have full screen app so taking up the whole display half screen so it moves it to the right hand side of the screen and then you select another app for the left hand side or slide overview so it moves the app you're currently in in slide over and brings another app up behind it then at the bottom of the screen in apps about support multi- window so Safari Chrome other two I can remember um you have the Shelf at the bottom so if you have multiple windows for a specific app open then what you can do is as you as you would expect really just swap switch between them with the to of a button um if one of them is heading split vew with another app that will also be held in the shelf so you never have to worry about losing your split views and easy swapping between your split view app and your nonsplit view you can create as many windows as the apps will allow so for example right now I for some reason decided I needed four safari windows um yeah so it's quite helpful actually just to kind of have that option there and you can also swipe up and hold to get to the app switcher as always and then what you can do is you can hold on to one of your app so let's say notes for example and if I were to hover it over where Safari is then it will create a split view with Safari and note so this can all now be done in the out switcher instead of doing it uh kind of by dragging up doc every time I want to do an app searching around in the app Library if I know I got two that have been open recently I can do it very quickly of course you can swipe up from a do and drag any app also works with apps in app Li now so it's not as big of issue but just nice to kind of have the options for different ways to do it uh then there's slightly new notes experience um having played around with it I realized it's not as big as I thought it were going to be um just quick change to Shared notes if you are mentioned in a shared note then you'll get notification saying you've been mentioned and just so you know hey you need to take a look at this and then also quick notes are available for iPad iPad OS 15 and Macos monter um basically just allow you to bring a quick note up over any app that you want and it can also see what app is being used and that can even work with third party app sorry about that there my computer decided that it wants to go to sleep because I'm in Windows right now uh then there's also Swift playground so Swift playgrounds has actually had an awesomely massive update I'm actually so happy to see this in twift playground I almost feel need to change the name to just X code for iPad now but I guess Future parody isn't there enough for it you can use Swift playground to develop apps for iPad OS and iOS and also test apps for iPad OS and iOS you can also distribute those apps on the App Store straight from your iPad and the projects can be modified on X code for Macos as well so you know that's a pretty big change to suddenly see that your iPad is now as you know you can basically just do all your development work on your iPad that's awesome to see I am loving that idea now Macos mon Terry this has actually not got any Super major updates to be honest um some nice things to see but they didn't show everything that they've actually announced here I got the uh kind of slide overviews here of everything they have announced so firstly you've got universal control so you can control your iPad with your Mac keyboard and mouse and you can also control another Mac ma with the same keyboard and mouse so let's say for example you've got a MacBook Pro an iMac and an iPad what you can do is as long as you have ah I believe it's Handover Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on you can set them next to each other or near each other and you can drag the mouse on your Mac over to let's say the iPad on the right in this example you could drag your mouse over to the right hand side and you then go into your iPad screen but instead of like a c car where it basically just expands your max display size what it would actually allow you to do is it's basically I'm trying to pick of the best way to describe this it's basically just controlling your iPad as if you had a keyboard and mouse attached directly to your iPad that's actually fairly easy to describe and then you can drag and drop files from your iPad onto your Mac IM Mac and then you can do exactly the same thing with your MacBook Pro just everything that's in your MacBook Pro is done in your MacBook Pro it doesn't extend your Mac display or anything FaceTime oh FaceTime has had a very nice update actually this good to see so four kind of key features for FaceTime just really quickly FaceTime now has a new share play feature it allows you to enjoy content at the same time over FaceTime without losing sync so for example say you wanted to watch a movie on Disney plus all of your friends will be in sync with at the same time so there won't be one of you slightly further ahead or slightly further behind and apple is opening up the AI for share play to all developers and they partner with certain developers such as Disney plus such as I believe it's Hulu uh Paramount to kind of get this on a r now there's been no mention of Netflix or Spotify in there yet but that kind of makes sense based on the battles going on right now uh FaceTime is also coming to Android and Windows via the web finally we're at least G to have a way to use FaceTime even if it's not very intuitive it just nice to Ste with being announced um users will be able to send a link to their friends on Android and Windows they can then click on that link and it will open up FaceTime in their browser now they won't have access to certain features just du to the fact it's running in the browser and apple still wants to make Apple devices the main way to use FaceTime of course can't really blame him for that um so yeah along with that new links for Windows and Android they're also gaining the ability for us to schedule meetings using links so you can schedule a meeting at certain time much like you can in zoom and there's also a new grid view layout and spal audio so a great to you we've all seen it in Zoom or teams or whatever we used it lays everyone out in a very specific grid pattern so you can see as many people's faces on as the screen can fit uh spatial audio just makes it VI audio sound like com from where the person's head is on your screen just makes it feel a bit more realistic I guess I haven't tried it out so I'll looking forward to trying out at some point soon so that's kind of all of the new features that apple have announced at WWDC I personally am really looking forward to giving all AG go seeing what they're like what it's like to use X Y and Z how well does it work uh that iPad multitasking update I've been using it on my iPad air2 which by the way is somehow still supported uh Apple thank you I believe it's now 7 years that my iPad has been supported for I just just a small thank you to them actually for that because you know what they may not support developers that much but they do support their users and I have to thank them for that now speaking of developers we're going to cut here because I know not everyone wants to listen to the next part on developers um fair enough if you're not too interested feel free to stop now and thank you for listening as far as you have I am back I am working on some more improvements just so it sound is a bit nicer but for now I'm just glad to be back to making podcast episodes so please keep listening if you want to hear about how how Apple's been treating their developers and how I think they could change it slightly going be a brief five minute segment a proper in-depth analysis of this will be on Apple analysis but feel free to carry on listening pass the next transition [Music] okay so just a quick reminder for those of you who aren't super interested in hearing about things to do developers and stuff really go purely for Developers or more specifically how Apple treats their developers uh Apple so for developers especially maybe consumers as well but I know definitely for the developers out there including myself after the recent Apple versus epic trial it really became clear how Apple views developers um The View AR is being lucky to to be getting any money from any apps but we spend our time creating and putting on their platform basically they say that they you know even if they didn't do any work they still deserve some source of rental fee and we still have to pay something even if it wasn't through the App Store so that's kind of how it came out in the triail and today they really did show their arrogance towards kind of what how they feel developers are and it was in a very subtle way that lots of people might not notice I didn't noce it immediately it took me a couple seconds to realize it but during WWDC Apple basically said that they paid developers I can't remember the exact figure because it honestly went out of my head but they basically say that they paid developers as and they made it sound as if they were just taking money out of their pockets and giving it to developers and saying here this is your money this is your pay for putting your up on our platform like they made it sound like that but the thing is that's really not how it happens and apple saying it in that way really does show exactly how Apple USS of their developers and specifically AB developers make which is Apple believes that they don't need them Apple showed very clearly in that one statement that they don't think they need developers and that developers are lucky to get developers are lucky to be to put apps on their platform and finally that developers are lucky to get any money from apps that they put on the platform at all they made that attitude very clear in a single sentence Apple a small tip a few words can do an awful lot and those few words just showed exactly how you feel about your developer community and how you view them as being important to your platform now let's break this down a bit because not everyone's going to fully understand how this kind of all feeds into this so during the Epic versus Apple trial Apple basically said that even if developers didn't have to pay a 30% fee on in app transactions they would still have to pay money through some other sort of way I have a problem with this every time I've gone to look at it at least unless I'm missing something developers already do pay something else on the Apple developer Pro program website if we go over to it here it charges you $100 us a year to be in the app to be in the program now that's $100 a year I mean that's unless we changed it recently but I don't believe they have um let's see how it [Music] works yeah so for costed $99 per membership Year all developers have to pay Apple $100 a year [Music] and then they say that if we didn't get our 30% fee developers would still have to pay us [Music] more that personally just insults me cuz I don't earn $100 a year I don't have that I'm a teenager and I want to develop app and I want to put them on Apple's platform Google they make it a simple 12 I can't remember how much it is now they make it a oneoff payment and you're fre to best store Microsoft to get onto the Microsoft store a simple payment you're free to our store Apple charge you $100 us a year to be on the Apple App Store that's strike one strike two is then them saying listen you going to pay us $100 a year but you we're also going to charge you an extra 30% on any purches you make now yes it's 15% up to the first I can't remember I think it's something like I can't remember I think it was $1 million or something I can't remember exactly how it worked but there's a slight difference now it's a bit more flexible in a way so % up to a certain amount but the problem is that's a one off cut off once you cross that line you then don't go back down every year like you would with normal taxes you stay above that line so that is again just another thing that I personally find really arrogant the second you make a million in one or just a tiny bit over that amount you then have to be ready to swallow another 15 to lose another 15% of your profit I'm glad that they're lowering it for both developers who can't afford it but at the same time the fact that it doesn't reset every year like Google does is still majorly con majorly concerning for a developer because you have to be watching that line very carefully every day and be ready to absorb the cost of losing another 15% of your Revenue that that's part one that's back from The Trial now the second part is what Apple have said today so Apple say today that they have paid developers technically you could say that's almost correct the money does come out of an Apple account and go into a developer account S of it's very complicated within our purchases but basically the way it works is the user makes a transaction using apples in that payment system because that's the only way for them to make payments not because companies don't choose to put something else in there because they're not allowed to unless they use a web app which is a stupid work around but it's one that they have to use if they want to work around it so they pay it through Apple's in app purchase system Apple then takes a 30% cut of that money and then fors the rest of it onto developers or 15% depending on who you are basically they take a cut and then they send the rest of it to you now that may sound okay cool what's the problem with that in theory there nothing wrong with that model that's how it's works for years from when is was stored on physical store shelves fine but the problem is the way Apple words it in their conference Apple has paid developers the word paid suggested coming out of Apple's account and they're losing money by paying for developers and that it's up to them whether the developers should get their money or not the thing is it's not well it is but it really isn't at the end of the day the amount of money developer gets comes from the user that chose to make that microtransaction or in out plus or whatever you want to call it Apple saying that they paid developers shows in very very clear way how Apple feels towards the money that developers get they've shown in one statement that as far as they're concerned they could have 100% they are and developers are just lucky that Apple has chosen not to enforce that I personally strongly disagree with that and don't believe in that at all I think if anything Apple's lucky to be allowed to 30% cut that they are in what is a very closed off ecosystem and I personally think that it should be more for developers or developers should have the option of completely side stepping in that purchases but that's a debate for another day have apple I going leave leave you with a bit of De a bit of advice right now a couple of you have basically just said in that one statement you're the ones paying developers but the money that goes into your account for that Split Second is sent by another user you don't lose money from it it's not you know you only gain money from that transaction you don't lose anything from giving me as a developer for money you get your 30% of money which I don't get and I have to make my price and my prices I can't make my price more expensive but I still get the same amount as I would on another platform that doesn't have this issue I lose that first I'm not allowed to increase my [Music] pricing so I lose out on that the only one losing money is the developer the one gaining everything is the third thing and I've ended up taking about five minutes to explain each point now is back at the trial Apple said that they don't know how much the App Store generates in profit but that they assume it is [Music] profitable now this is something that I find both hard to believe but also not very hard to believe actually um but I believe Apple's done this on purpose see they don't look at the App Store individually they look at Services as a whole now the downside for Apple to do that within their company is that they don't know specifically where they're making a loss but the upside for them is that people outside of the company have no idea idea whether they're making hundreds of millions in profit or not they have no we have no way of knowing specifically from the App Store how much profit Apple actually make a year but the fact that they said openly in trail we don't look at the numbers of how much the AL St [Music] makes is very very actually naive of them to just to come out and say because lots of you have been able to work out rough estimates exactly how much Apple make just by looking at data as Apple to do that we don't look at it that way actually implies [Music] incompetence and quite frankly they're not doing themselves any favors cuz all cuz to the public it just sees as okay so they just look at things as a whole they don't z r on specific sections but as a developer I can I think they've weighed the cost of knowing exactly how much profit or loss they make against letting developers know how much money they could actually afford to give to them and de side of it's not worth giving developers and Republic the opportunity to see how much money Apple can afford to give them whil barely making a dent in their pockets as a developer that's what I personally see when I hear a statement like that so yeah that's basically my thoughts on how Apple streets fa developers they see it as though we are lucky to get any money from the outut we create and place on their store that give their devices value without further party app lots more people will swap over to the Android and I think it would be a losing battle personally but anyway that's enough for today genuinely the software updates I'm really looking forward to seeing them all coming out and everything awesome features I love iPad 15 but I just wish Apple would have at least focused on it being a developer conference anyway thank you for listening my name is Luke and this is D out digital world [Music]
