hello and welcome thanks for joining us we've got baseball on the show it's the Philadelphia Phillies taking on the St Louis Cardinals John shamie and Chris Singleton with you so the philadelph Phillies have taken the first two games of this series and today they'll go for the sweep they played well Chris and they're looking for more of the same in this one yeah they've been the side shaking hands on the field after each game so far played solid baseball to earn those wins as you said but every game offers up its own unique challenges so we'll see what those are today but there's always a little extra motivation when you have an opportunity to sweep a series all right we'll be back to get this one started after this just about ready to roll pitching in our game today Kyle Gibson he's his ups and downs in his career as his ra is just over four but this is a guy that's not afraid he's going to take the ball he's going to go out there and give it his best Trey Turner stands in now and watches strike one hammered and now maybe extra bases now he'll turn for second and he's there with a lead off double couldn't have timed it up any better than that you connect and it jums off your like that you're thinking double at the very least great swing on it man he wasn'ted at Allon Mar in now takes ball one off the [Applause] plate right side hard hit Crawford throws the first in time one out in the top of the first that is and time now for the Phillies lineup we could be in for a power showcase today with the wind blowing out a lot of lift and separate Chris well we know hitters are in this era definitely trying to hit the ball in the air regardless of the conditions but I think even a little more so there's margin for error if you can get the ball up in the air so you know you'll see at times I'm sure with two strikes what looks like a half swing that can get out of the ball Ark with a hitter who's got decent bom kicks and foul ball there Turner stands at third with one gone in the inning the 02 swings and misses is on the fast ball up in the zone for the strike down and now it's Alec bone enters this one with four extra base hits already in the series in the air right field and that'll fall for a base hit and they strike first as they take a one nothing lead well clearly he was ready to hit right there with the way Defenders track down balls these days I mean both from the infield and in the Outfield there really aren't a lot of base hits on balls hit like that but there's always a little back behind the first and second Bas to drop a long Dart in there and he found way this is Bryson's stop looking to stay hot he had five hits in the game last night that's down and in swings through that one I got one ball one strike one run across in the frame so far and we're just getting started here in the top of the first [Applause] popped up middle of the diamond sizes this one up brings it in for the third out so one run in the Inning on this base hit it's now one nothing major league baseball is on the show back here in St Louis and today's starting pitcher Ranger Suarez yeah zra last year was a little worse than average so definitely be looking for better results this season you know one of the keys is just being able to have a consistent delivery and be able to repeat that delivery so you can hit the spots that you want have a higher chance of being successful Michael now at the plate as he swings through strike one in the air right field sizing this one up he makes the grab and up to hit is Wilson conteras a swing and a miss and that strike one this is a great Dynamic right here Speedy runner at first thinking about taking second catcher stop over to turn for one what a double play that was inning over and welcome back to ballpark Kyle schwarber comes up to hit here the pitch swing and a miss one Gibson a former Allstar he features a sinker a cutter a slur a change up and he works in a for [Applause] seamer and there's one down we take a look at the three- pitch sequence here pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate once your head 02 as a pitcher you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that H going to be trying to protect in battle right there clearly he was in swing mode but all you can do is hope to foul that off and that one is lifted in the air two away and up to the plate is JT real M swing and a miss strike one oh and one two out bace is empty in the air out to Center that one gets down for a [Applause] hit Johan roax stands in for the Phillies three for 10 in the series so far right back to him on the mound tosses to First and that is that back in St Louis as the Cardinals come up to hit here in the last of the second bottom of the inning and stepping in for the Cardinals Alec burlson up the middle Turner lead off man retired here in the second here's Nolan arado ripped to short sends it across the first two up two down so digging in Lars Nar right through there for a [Applause] strike on the ground out to short Turner with the throw to first and it's a one two3 inning back here in St Louis and now the short stop Trey Turner Gibson back to work that one fouled off Turner multitime Allstar a member of the 1,00 hit Club a former first round pick back in 2014 righty delivers struck him out he says I don't care about draft rounds take a seat Brandon Marsh steps to the plate swing and a miss hold one the [Music] count that misses going to count one and two one ball two St on the ground to short win first two batters retired here in the top of the third here's Bryce Harper good Sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for ball on the ground nice ground out out front with the swing and that is strike one oh and two now stays alive and that's off the Inside Edge it's a ball in two [Applause] strikes swanging a highfly ball in the air left field nuke bar drop step going back and that one is out of here a laser to left and they tack on to their lead it's two nothing fans expect Bryce Harper to do something special every time he comes to the dish and he didn't disappoint [Applause] there at this level you got to be good sometimes you got to be a little lucky that was a pretty nasty pit Sinker on the outside corner but he did a great job of covering it and he hit the ball out of the P so two away with nobody on and now it's the cleanup spot for the Phillies Alec B first pitch not [Applause] close and the righty deals live Drive makes the grab and that'll end the inning the Phillies get one by way of the long ball and it's two zip you're watching Philly baseball on the show Northeast back here at Bush Stadium at the plate Ivon Herrera and there's a foul ball you know these Cardinals as you probably noticed haven't been shy at the plate at all in fact they've probably been too aggressive at times I'm specifically talking about the first pitch these batters are swinging more than 80% of the time which is fine if you're scoring runs but that hasn't been the case today count one and0 the wine of the pitch swing and a miss nice change up I got a ball one strike that to right no trouble here puts it away for the out and there's two away Brandon Crawford in the box with two gone and takes a look at a called strike that one finds the zone and the count is 0 and two head connect on the curve ball struck him out Redbirds and we're back John shami with Chris Singleton and set to lead off the Bryson stop pitch round ball left side arado to First in time one up one down Kyle schwarber stands in for the Phillies and first offering is fouled off one down base is empty foul [Music] ball ground ball right side Crawford two quick outs here in the top of the four two outs Bas is empty here's Nicholas castanos and it's fou away two down nobody on top half of inning number four oh that hit him not in time great effort but it's an infield hit two outs runner at first and now it is JT real m one for one with a single so far and he grounds one to the right side and it's through for a hit so that's two straight two out heads Johan Roos the next to hit he's over for one he swings and hits a Fly ball center field burlson settles under it and makes the catch back here in St Louis and the batter will be the short stop Mason wi fouled off he was [Applause] late pass ball for a strike [Applause] swings and misses struck him out well they get the strike out there and what kind of stood out to me was that they weren't shying away from contact every single pitch was in the strike zone and that tells me they wanted to attack him and it paid off can batting with one down takes the strike swing at a lineer foul off to the [Applause] right the2 knocks that one away and will do it again field two and a foul ball he stays alive and he'll bals that off to the left and do it again the pitch cuts and misses it's a strikeout TK with one two and three to start this inning but no trouble so far sure he'd love to strike out the side here big a little statement but you got to be he steps on the bag St Louis goes and welcome back to the ballpark here's Trey Turner and a pitch and first offering is fou off well you can't really adjust your game plan for that last pitch guy hasn't thrown it very much you got to focus on the stuff that he's throwing up there most of the time swing in a miss and two B that was pretty gross right there down on strikes one away here in the fifth Brandon Marsh digs in now [Applause] [Music] and first off ring is fouled off one down base is empty on the ground right side to First and the first two set down to the top of the fif here's Harper now well he didn't recognize change up earlier enough got out in front a little bit rolled over on it and beat it into the ground and he was nowhere near that one for strike one misses the zone and he gets him to chase no ball two stri two down nobody on swing and a miss struck him out three up three we head to the bottom of the fifth now up the Cardinals number four hitter Alec burlson that one finds the zone and that is strike one fast ball for a strike [Applause] the why to kick the pitch the punch out there and that's the first out in the bottom of the fif here's Nolan arado 0 for one he grounded out and his first it back that's in there that's strike one Nolan arado at the plate arado guy who delivers Big Time power at the dish and will probably go down as one of the greatest defensive third basem of all time [Applause] Bas is empty one away last half of inning number five called strike three and a fast up in the zone no that's not the best two- strike fastball I've seen but certainly got away with the location there you know sometimes as a hitter when you're down in the count you're so focused on a pitcher pain in the BL well going to pause on that thought as that back here in St Louis all set for the start of the inning so digging in now for Philadelphia Alec bone and the first pitch misses for ball one bone in his fourth year 27 years old and he's been on a good run at the plate hitting over 300 in his last 10 games and that one fouled [Applause] off next offer in there for a strike that strike two that's that slurp right there threw it extremely well talk about just a ton of break so tough to get that Barrel to and another ball in the air out towards left Center Newar puts it away one away Bryson stop getting ready to [Applause] hit Line Drive face hit so man aboard now with one away and digging in for Philadelphia Kyle schwarber runner on the goal it's a pitch out low throw and he can't take it out well with that kind of elite arm he has behind the plate man it's a pretty big deal when you can swipe a bag against this dude maybe more than anything it prevents teams from just testing him thinking that they can even steal the base but right here successfully mooved that runner up to scoring position good job and here it comes in the air right field should have this one brings it in grounder tags it second and now a wide throw to third Nick castanos at the plate now one for two [Applause] just [Applause] [Applause] missed stop on third with two out bounced out to short wind fires over to First and castios is out back here at bus Stadium ready to go for the last half of the inning and now it's Ivon Herrero and that's in there at the knees for a strike and that one wrapped [Applause] foul and down on strikes he goes and one away committed to that breaking ball just a little too much and couldn't pull the back back in time once you get it going it can be so tough to stop the momentum with that Barrel good pitch had and that one pulled foul one down base is empty bouns it back with two strikes the wi of the pitch bounce to the right stop tosses to First and they get goldi for the out and that'll bring up Brandon Crawford immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter on the ground tosses to First and Crawford is set down number 64 on the pitch out of the pen here he last pitch two days ago real M at the play for the third time as he comes up empty there smash to Center back and you can forget it home run a gigantic blast his second home run of the series and they add a run it's three nothing that one just sounded different yeah it might have been the loudest moment yet man my ears are ringing I can feel that swing from the booth if you hit the ball that far you know we're going to the numbers let's go back to the nerd herd at stack cast that was impressive yeah wow I mean they don't hit him much farther than that boo everything's got to come together to hit a ball like that and he really showed us something right there here's the center fielder Johan Roos and first offering is fouled off always exciting to see a leadoff home run in an inning kind of gets the offense fired up and you start to expect a big inning that one is absolutely belted that's down one hops off the wall oh he throws it away and he's into second with nobody out Tre Turner now struck out on just three pitches last time slides but it gets by him around third here's the throw to the plate safe that's now three hits in a row for the offense really good swing right there he got a pitch that he knew he could handle allowed himself to stay back just a t bit longer and he hit the ball on the [Applause] screws pitch on here joh King and they it was time to bring on a left-handed relever from the p with the Lefty hit coming up I think it's a good move I know I never like when opposing team did that to me and that one lifted in the air center field he Dives but he can't make the catch and they get it in quickly first and third now with nobody out hitting is really easy for some guys one thing that I can see already his Bat stays in the Zone on plane for an extended period of time and guys like that they have a high contact rate and they have more because of that bat being on plane and even when you don't get it great it's still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder quickly to Second for one and a run scores on the double play for me that's one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield the firstan has to get inside create a throwing Lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play and then from there completing it back to First really good job all the way around and next will be the cleanup hitter Alec bom that one down the line and foul ball already three runs across in the frame here in the third and final game of the series bounce to the left side fires across the diamond and that is that so remaining of the game defensively Austin Hayes he'll be the new left fielder after entering the game as a pinch hitter wi in the Box again takes a strike [Applause] [Applause] kicks and fires hard on the ground to first he handles it himself and the lead off hitter set down to open the seven now batting Michael canani he swings and fouls one off one out B empty late that time and it's strike two count foul ball it stays nothing in [Applause] two one down base is empty lifted in the air right field castanos gets under it calls it in two maybe caught that one off the end just a little bit couldn't quite Barrel it up enough to really drive it right Drive B hit and that extends the inning so now it's the Four Hole hitter Alec burlon that one finds the Zone strike one well they've kept him pretty quiet in this series still doesn't have a knock I know you want to get that first knock out of the way maybe more will come trouble here puts it away for the out and we're back we to the eight so they're making a move for a bat Off the Bench Edo Sosa with his speed he could really make some things happen leading [Applause] all and the pitch hammered on the line at the left base hit so a runner aboard to start the inning Kyle schwarber stands in for the Phillies oh for three a fly out a ground out and a strike out and that one hammered way back there and brings it in at the wall right so digging in now for Philadelphia Nick casos one for three ripped to Third and caught nothing you can do about those as a hitter even though you know that they still drive you absolutely crazy JT real mtil steps in he's already homered here in this one line drive and that should be extra bases Sosa round second on his way to third coming home he scores and it's now a six run lead and his hot hitting continu they kept him in the yard that time but all he's doing now is passing the Baton and everything seems to get started around this guy so two down and now the center fielder Johan roas Goldie he takes it himself to the and that'll do it so they pick up a run on two hits no errors in a man left arado leading things off and takes a strike breaking ball is in for a strike and quickly it is nothing in two this one popped up foul ground first Bas side Harper snags it and a quick out number one up next for the cardal the left field and up next for St Louis LS Nar and first off ring is fouled off the Phils up big in this one here the bottom half of the eighth inning right through there for a [Applause] strike swing and a miss struck him out picks up strikeout number seven two out SP is empty at the batter now Ivon Herrera first pitch and that's in for a strike and it's swinging to miss [Applause] two two outs keeps the back going with a foul ball [Applause] two down nobody on fights that one away and the count remains o and two good battle here about to be the eighth pitch of the at swings and misses and good work there as he gets a one we're back it's the top of the n and there's a new pitcher on the M Andrew pitri and big defit on the score he almost has to just put that out of his mind every OU matters forever could be extra bases makes the turn and heads for second not stopping he's going for three the relay throw not in time he's safe put some good swings on the B that's his second extra hit in this one anytime you rip a line drive you feel really good about what you did at the plate you trusted your hands you let the ball travel and you took the barrel straight to it that's great work Hayes the batter now as he swings and misses for strike [Applause] one towards first Goldie that's out number one and a run comes into score now Harper to the pl he's already homered in this game krige goes 6'1 230 lbs and they traded for him earlier this year that misses the zone and that's ball one and a foul ball the Phillies up big in this one here at the top of the night [Applause] one down base is empty ripped to third the throw to first Harper retired here's the third baseman Alec bone first off and it just [Music] misses at the belt and fires swing and a miss and now it's even one and one no fair right there I mean that slider didn't move till the very last moment incredibly difficult to pick that up just kind of have to tip your cap on that pitch next offering misses down and away line drive base hit right field Joey gets on base and keeps it going well patience and discipline paid off right there as he got into an advantage count showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way didn't get jumpy didn't try to pull the ball let it get deep took the barrel right to it and then extend it through the swing for the line drive base hit [Applause] the other way and it goes just foul two outs one ball this one in the dirt and an excellent job keeping it right [Applause] there spoils the two strike pitch and another bounc to Third on to Crawford and that is that back here in St Louis last chance for the home team now up for St Louis Paul goldshmid swanging a in and it's and one a little out front there as he swings through itall right next offering [Applause] upstairs just missed looks like he's picked up right where he left off here's Brandon Crawford immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed hitter I mean his pitch efficiency ability to get ahead and count at times to contact let the defense work behind him that's why he's still in the game here in the ninth inning hay puts it away for the out that's out number two swing and that ball smashed on the line and he's got it ball game and the Phillies get a shut out on the mound terrific job in this game he scattered two hits and pretty dominant efficient with his pitch count got himself all the way to the finish line and finished what he started this one ends seven nothing and team picks up the win and picks up a sweep for Chris Singleton and our entire outstanding crew here at MLB the Show I'm John Shi thanks for joining us for
