Bears’ Matt Eberflus gives injury update on Rome Odunze, discusses Caleb Williams adjustments

okay so I had our team meeting this morning and uh just outlin the keys to victory for this week and uh obviously we're just getting started on that um did the game plan the last couple days with the coaches and start to implement that game plan for first and second down today uh with the uh offense and defense we got a padded practice today so it's going to be real physical uh got to be really physical in the kicking game these guys are really good in the kicking game in terms of the cover teams um so we got to be really good that way and uh so to go back a little bit uh obviously very proud of Tyreek um and really that's I'd say that's a unit uh really award for the for that particular week being the NFC defensive player of the week uh so he's excellent uh by him and in the whole group uh Rome will still be uh dayto day so I know that that will be a question that's that's what I have for you right now and uh Keenan Allen as heel we're going to let him rest up for the day and see where it is tomorrow uh so that's where he is uh going forward but again we're excited about Sunday night football going down to Houston uh but it all starts on the grass today with a good Wednesday so with that I'll take questions is R gonna practice or no no no he will not he will not practice today so we're gonna like I said day to day he will be out today it pretty bad how forunate you feel it's not bad yeah you know when you have that type of somebody fall on your leg like that and you have that type of deal it's always uh fortunate that it's not that serious and uh very lucky that way very for forunate uh so we're blessed that way Matt and seeing the type of season that CJ stad had last year one of the best that we've ever seen from a rookie quarterback how do you use that potentially as benchmarks for the type of progress you hope to see from Caleb yeah we I just know you know I don't like comparing players because everybody's journey is different and uh you know everybody moves through that uh their own way uh so it's again it's matters where you finish up at you know at the end of the day but I will say this that CJ did have a heck of a year uh with the yardage and the and man in the game and the explosive passes um you know I know he's got some really good guys around him which is really good to have with some new additions this year with another receiver and a running back and but uh yeah excellent year uh again commend him and the him and the coaches and everybody on that staff when you guys studied uh I'm sure you studied the Texans last year before drafting quarterback this year what did they do this put him in a position to have maybe the greatest season ever by yeah I mean uh just they were it was coached well you know I think he he was coached well to stay in the pocket uh I think that he naturally keeps his eyes down the field and doesn't look at rush which happens to a lot of young quarterbacks so he's able to do that like I said he had a lot of good skill around him you know uh you know tank did a heck of a job when he was in there before he got injured and then Collins is obviously one of the most explosive you know best receivers in the league you know so um yeah just just about that why would you why would you guys able to R the ball more effectively on Sunday that you've had a chance to go through the film talk to the coaches what what was off yeah you can decipher stats uh and move those things as you know how you want them uh but we really feel that we we were solid there uh I know we had some negative runs the 19 yard sack and all those things that take away uh from the the true number uh but again the number is the number and that's the way I live but uh again I thought the efficiency was solid uh certainly we had better efficiency in the past and we're looking forward forward uh to getting that this week into this game you said you wanted to see how Caleb would respond to what happened on Sunday and the days coming after it what has he been like the last couple of days and where do you want to see that jump from week one to week he's been really good uh since we watched the plays you know him and I watch the plays you know on on Monday morning he comes into my office and really good there it's really good you know with the players you know owning up to everything and you know taking responsibility for performance and for an accountability that's what you need from leaders on the football team not just him and then moving forward moving forward to uh to coming in this morning and figuring out what we're doing how we're doing it you know and having conversations with him and I think that uh he's in a good spot for Rome have you ruled out a week to week thing is that uh specifically day to-day or is he still being evaluated there yeah like I said it's day to-day it's dayto day so you know so it's we're in a good spot it's nothing serious and we're in a good spot for it you account for the the Texans Rush going into Sunday what impresses you the most about Hunter and Anderson and then individually and then collectively what they do yeah all the good rushers you know obviously had god-given ability and both those guys have that uh they have their own way of rushing uh but what they do is they have a great motor and and they have great power at the top of the rush you know so they can level back they can bow rush you know they have their way is getting around the quarterback they can bore around the edge um and they work well with the defense of tackle next to them you know they do a really good job of four equals one they they operate out of a four-man rush and they do a really good job working off each other what was your evaluation of the offensive line how did you think they did I thought it was solid I thought it was solid I I think that you know obvious see we want you know better run numbers you know um I do think they protected solid at times um again we saw a couple ones where they where they didn't um again we're working on those things being more solid and firm in the pocket uh but again it was week one and the biggest improvement from week uh week one to week two is probably the biggest Improvement that you have Coach to that point to that point you with your defense background know better than most people once you see Team things on tape where you get a few of the leaks that you saw on the interior offensive line defenses are more likely to kind of do things kind of replicate those leag how do you get out in front of you know things that you think may come as the defense to try and take advantage of what this on yeah you're always working on that right you're always working on that it could be in your one of your protection teams it could be on your offensive line it could be in your run defense whatever that is you always got to stay ahead of it you know and you stay ahead of it with fundamentals first um then adjusting your scheme you got to be able to adjust and adapt you know during the course of the game but also certainly week to week you know and adjust where you're moving your protection to and uh I just think it's part of that and we're all doing that as coaches in the NFL first game results can be somewhat deceptive because of the opponent in first game and stuff but from your defense what did you see from your defense Beyond just the effort and the aggressiveness what but what did you see from your defense that you feel production-wise is universal that will be sustainable that will be kind of a definition of what your defense will do week to week I think it's about being consistent you know I think we were a little bit off on the Run fits to start um in that game you know we had to run a 26 I believe and then 14 yards U so we were a little off on a couple of those um and just being where you're supposed to be when you're supposed to be there and uh just being physical and it comes down to what we do on the grass I always say that but it's so true um and then being able to adjust ingame you know to be able to make sure that you're if you got an issue you got to be able to fix it you know pretty fast and that's what I'm most proud of the guys they they were able to adjust play really good technique in the second half and the end part of that first half and uh be able to stop what we what we needed to stop and then make big plays down the stretch I think that was a big big part of the game what's a good example of like an adjustment you made or something you did that really fixed it obviously you know after the punt the punt black things really change what what's a good example of some of an adjustment you made defensively that and I'm talking directly to De o Ryan right now that's a joke yeah okay um uh but you know but no uh seriously I I just think that uh like it comes down to you make your adjustments you have contingency plans uh in your game plan that you can go to um if something's you know the first plan's not going the way you wanted it to and we just uh simply went to that that's all we did what's the responsibility Matt for being the other corner so for Tyreek playing with Jaylen an all pro guy who might not get targeted a lot by quarterbacks what does that that type of load that Tyre has to shoulder and obviously it comes with him being defensive player of the week this week how have you seen him handle that responsibility and rise to that challenge yeah he he loves competition uh he's a he's very competitive uh he's a very physical Cor um he loves to compete you know and you can see that how Fier he is out on the field um he just he welcomes that he you know it gives him joy to be able to go out there and compete you can see that every day um I like the way he tackles I like the way he hits I like the way he plays and uh that's why he's here he's a guy that loves football and uh to me it's like just an honor to be able to coach him you know and work with him because I do like that his his inside he got he's got a he's got a fire that burns hot and I like that what kind of responsibility is that though for a player who knows they're going to be targeted a lot more probably because it's smarter not to Target someone like jayen I I mean he just like I said just he's up for the challenge he like he likes it and uh you know again there's when you're a corner in this league you you know you get beat sometimes and it's got to be water off a duck's back and moving on to the next thing because the next play they're they're going that way that direction again so it's just uh you got to move on your get more snaps in the game was that just kind of an oversight was that part of the plan SE him only less than 50% so I mean yeah I mean yes oversight not part of the plan I don't I don't know about all that I would say that it's uh you know situationally you know there's a we had 11 personnel where he was in and then when G was in so it was the way the rotation happened you know certainly do we want to get Cole involved in the game plan uh more in terms of catches and you know point of attack blocking and all those things yes yes we do uh but again we're uh looking for a formula for Success um on offense and again that's going to take a little bit of time in terms of uh Distributing the ball to the skill uh more evenly and uh we're working to do that this week Matt what's what's the concern level with Keenan I know I mean he was a full go on Friday and you tweak the the heel on Sunday what's your concern about going forward yeah I mean I think it's just about rest you know and then hopefully the rest helps and again I can't say it definitively right now but I know that right now they're telling me hey he's going to rest this day then we're going to see where he is going to feel tomorrow uh to be able to do uh do some practice for all the questions we had about your pass uh with with Taylor what enabled him to have a really good you talk about DT specifically yeah just his get off I mean you saw the get off I mean he had a really good get off on the ball that's beating him to the punch uh that's you know making the uh offensive tackle Panic you know and be able to get out of his set and I think that's what he did you know and again he had the one against the rookie and I think he had a couple more pressures you know dwok had four pressures so we had a lot of good pressures on the quarterback that affected the game um and it certainly I was impressed by him coming in so fast and be able to work with the other players and know what to do um and then do it fast and that was most impressive to me with the uncertainty with both Rome and Keenan what's the ripple effect for the receivers this week and specifically what's your message to Tyler Scott as he tries to come back from yeah just opportunity you know opportunity you're looking for an opportunity a crack in the door um you know with because it was it's a strong receiving group that we that we have this year and again we still got to prove it but uh I would say that uh opportunity you know when that crack door opens man you take your opportunity and run with it congrats you finished the video if you want to build on that success download the NBC Sports Chicago app
