[Music] there's this funny thing that happens when women age we become damn near invisible but it's useful because nobody sees us coming I've never thought at my age I'd be playing such a wonderful role and to play such a complex character uh a woman who um seems forgotten and invisible but isn't and in fact uses that what's considered a liability uh in our day and age to her advantage and to pull the wool over everyone's eyes I think Matlock is a coming to self-realization no matter what age you're at I think it's about relationships and how we interact with each other other and how that changes us as a result of that and I think it's just it's pure comedy in heart yes it is completely reimagined so you don't have to know the show to love our show I don't think audiences know uh uh what a true sort of fresh look of a reboot is until you see it through the mind and eyes of Jenny IR she really is Matty I think uh she has so many things going on in her brain and it feels like she's been spying on all of our brains cuz some of the things that in our characters we can really relate to but if you have watched the old mattlock I think that you'd appreciate some of the the little bits that we put in there absolutely little Winks yeah to the old fans yeah she uses her lifetime of experience and wisdom to really connect with people and that helps her solve cases instead of you know uh Googling everything but I also love that at the very end just just when you think Matlock has only fooled the people in her life you realize she's also fooled the audience the theme of this is that you know or one of the themes is that you can never stop being a student in life and that's the same for Maddie Kathy bates's character when she's 75 years old she's actually really learning a lot from us and then of course the reverse is that we learn a lot from her and so we continue to have clashes of oh I see how you're working your way up in the world what am I going to sacrifice in my personality and in my morals to make it happen for myself and those questions are happening all the time in the show Olympia is things she is the daughter of a marine a mother of twins a wife to Julian and a rain maker at the top law firm in Manhattan Jacobson Mo she fights for justice and she spent many years working in corporate litigation and she did not feel like it touched her soul or anyone else's necessary and so she went out and she started finding people who could not afford a lawyer like Olympia Lawrence but she took them on as pro bono so that she can do good but also make a lot of money through other civil actions around their cases but uh she has a bit of a messy life and so in order to balance personal and professional she has this wall up she doesn't trust easy she doesn't let people in and meline Matlock pops in and somehow finds the crack in the castle wall and so over you know the season you'll start to see their relationship and evolved and you know they are definitely not friends but they're also not just colleagues Jason is Julian maybe more vulnerable than we think when we first meet him I think so I think Julian uh I think he covers up a lot of his vulnerability with anger with defensiveness um I think at the core of it he has a a deep Central wound in his life and his relationship with his father I think he feels like he has a lot to prove since his dad is the head of the firm I think he has the uh feeling that everybody around him thinks he got the job because of that and not because he's worked really hard and they don't actually know the relationship with his dad yeah it's it's I mean all of these characters are so beautifully written and three-dimensional and you'll have a judgment about a character and then you'll see another side to them in a different episode and see them in a whole new light and they're complicated and messy and it's wonderful it's fun to play I've heard messy a couple times now what about this relationship let's talk about extremely a little messy it's a little mess yes yeah I think just like um a lot of people in the real world who are married but both the wife and the husband are ambitious and they have goals yet they want a family yet who stays home who gets to shoe for the Stars like who's responsible for what hours and why and so I believe that the two of us Olympia and Julian they came up the ranks together I think that's where they they developed their love story but then how do you maintain that when you're both shooting to the top and you have to also be present for your family Billy is the person in the office that would love to work in Harmony and and he absolutely loves the law as well and so his passion about the law really really comes through and he is the sort of cheerleader for this new employee who's joining our team and um little by little the sort of positive charismatic cracks start to show and um you know in this fast and furious world of just trying to make your way to the top especially through a law firm it can really break a person and so Billy kind of goes through that sort of um that sort of Journey as well and I feel like Sarah is like I'm ready for it bring me straight to the top and Billy is like I will go there in an honest way but then he kind of realizes maybe I should go to Sarah's school and start working the way Sarah does um and so that's kind of his journey right away you would think oh Sarah's kind of one of those sharks she is like the typical like younger part of the generation too that is super hungry will do whatever it takes at all cost but she does kind of unravel over the course of the Season as you start to see that her way is not the only way so I feel like it's more of an identity crisis versus her going to the dark side but stay tuned for more you never know that's my face that's it just sheer shock the fact that just I don't know you hear our names David Del Rio Leo Lewis with Kathy Bates it's it's uh you know what is life really I don't know it's kind of like a bunch of Pinch Me moments over and over again and I also think the more that I get to know Kathy and we get to know her as well she has just proven how loving she is despite being so incredibly professional and serious about her work too I mean she's just the best there is she's an icon she's incredible I was very scared um why were you scared just because she's so incredibly talented and so your your impostor syndrome kicks right in and you go she's gonna do one scene with me and go wait a second this guy doesn't know what he's doing right no it's that kind of thing for me it's definitely like a Cinderella moment uh I still feel that now and when I got the call that I booked this part Kathy called me and I burst into tears naturally I didn't start pursuing acting till I was 28 years old and now I'm face to face with Kathy Bates and I earned it I had to do a chemistry read with her and she just she chose me and she has this way of just making you feel um like an equal and she still really puts in the passion and the attention as if she just got cast in for the first time it's it's unbelievable to witness yeah and she is quite collaborative too given all the experience she has had I think that's what making what makes working with her so easily she really does care about hearing what we also have to say too when it comes to adding things to a scene it's really true what they say if you give love you get love and there's a lot of love on our show this really is a pinnacle goal for me and to have this at the end of my career is an Incredible Gift how many seasons could you go um let's say I maybe five we'll see how long God gives me [Music]
